Evaluating Internet Sources

  • 2. Assess your source How did you find the page? What is the site’s domain? What are the credentials on the page? Is the page current and easy to navigate? Does the page contain advertising? Is the information accurate and objective? Does the author discuss personal viewpoints or bias?
  • 5. Provenance When? Where? By whom and for whom? What is the author’s agenda? What does it tell us? What does it omit?
  • 6. Subjectivity and Objectivity Subjective - a source which persuades; a personal viewpoint and may be biased e.g. a blog or article Objective - a source which informs; balanced and reliable research evidence Look at the ‘About Us’ section for background information
  • 7. Construct your research jigsaw Each source provides an incomplete picture; one piece of the jigsaw Ensure that accurate content is linked to your key research terms Reference key sources; if they have not been quoted they do not need to be referenced

Was it found using a search engine? unlike using library searches accuracy and quality of information will vary greatly Recommended by a lecturer or academic source? this is an indicator of reliability Cited in another credible source such as a report, Journal or credible website? Was it a link from another reputable site? What is the site’s domain? .org - an advocacy website, such as for a not for profit organisation or charity e.g. Barnardos .com - a business or commercial site .gov.uk - a government site .ac.uk - a higher education institution or research institute .net - a site from a network organisation or service provider .edu - US educational institutions Credentials - anyone can pose as an authority online Does the author state their name? Do they have an affiliation with an institution? Is there a real-world address, email address and phone number? Is the page current? Is it actively maintained by the author? Check the page for a date of creation and update Are the links included current and functional? Is the page easy to use and well presented, can you use tabs to navigate to the information you need? Is the site searchable? Does it provide a Home button and site map or index? There are no standards in terms of the accuracy of what is available on the Internet.
