How effective are the
combinations of your
main product and
ancillary texts?
Rosie Barnard
Why do you need an effective
combination of work?
O An effective combination of work is
essential because what we are creating is
replicating a marketing campaign for a
film. A marketing campaigns main aim is
to promote a business, product or service.
Marketing campaigns must be effective so
that the film draws in a large audience and
therefore gets more money.
How do you create an effective
combination of work?
O The main point to focus on here is
synergy. Synergy is when combining
products creates a greater effect than
when they are on their own.
An example of synergy
OTron legacy
O Tron legacy is a great example of synergy
throughout its marketing and the film they
1. Use the same fonts throughout.
2. Used the same colours, these were
blues.
3. Had an electric blue glow around things.
4. They used daft punk sound tracks and
then they made a cameo in the film.
Synergy in my products
I used the same font
throughout my products
O I used the font “DIDOT” throughout my
three products.
I used the same colour scheme
on all three pieces
O The colours that I used were black, grey, white and
red. These are very stereotypical colours of horror
films. The black and grey are very dark colours
which are scary as it looks like the darkness which
adds mystery and a sense of the unknown. The
red had connotations of death, danger, and blood
which are all very stereotypical and fit the
conventions of horror films.
O I used these throughout all three pieces so that
they all visually look the same, even from a glance,
as one of the first things you see on advertising are
the colours.
I also used the same red colour
continually
O I copied and pasted the colour code
“870d0d” so I made sure I got the same
shade red on my trailer, poster and
magazine cover. I used this colour for text,
blood, and background colours.
I used the mask on all three
main products
O I put the white mask on my trailer, poster
and magazine cover. This mask will
become very recognizable and associated
with the film; this should create a strong
brand and marketing campaign.
I used a red glow around my
film title
O I used a red glow around the title of my film. On the teaser
trailer and the poster there is a significant red glow that is
clearly visible.
O On the magazine cover the glow is less visible because it
didn't fit with the aesthetic or the layout on the cover. The
titles throughout the trailer also have a glow around them.
Having a glow around the texts could link in with the
technology part of our film. The colour of the glow is also
significant as it makes it an eerie and scary glow, as red
has a connotations of danger, death and blood.
These are all visual qualities
that allow the audience to
associate the magazine and
poster with the teaser trailer
and therefore the film,
creating a synergized
marketing campaign.
I also used other techniques
other than visual ones to tie
my teaser trailer to my
magazine and poster for
example…
A slogan
O I put the same slogan, “He is always
watching” on both my poster and my
magazine. This not only ties them
together, but also ties them to the teaser
trailer as this makes a clear reference to
the fact the the masked man is watching
them.
In conclusion
O I hope you will agree with me when I say I think I have
created three pieces of work that when combined or on
their own replicate a very effective marketing campaign.
O I have used synergy throughout my course work on things
like fonts, colours, and effects as well as slogans and items
that appear such as the mask.
O This has been made easier because all three pieces were
created on adobe software which allowed me to use fonts
and colours universally across all my work.
O Because of the synergy it is clear that my magazine and
poster are associated with my film “THE WATCHED”. This
will mean the film is advertised and recognized by more
people which will make it more popular and draw in a bigger
audience and therefore make it a bigger box office success
and hence produce more profit.
