DIGITAL PUBLISHING
By Charlie Murphy
EXCELSIOR DIGITAL PUBLISHING
LTD.

If our publishing company, “Excelsior,” went into digital media, we would have to combine
text, images, graphics, integrate video and audio, and make interactive elements in our
products.
These different digital conventions are needed for a variety of different types of publishing,
including e-newspapers, e-magazines, e-books, DVD covers, flyers, etc.
This presentation will focus on analysing how these convention are used in e-magazines and
DVD covers.
TEXT ON DVD COVERS
On DVD covers the text is an important part that helps promote the film. Not only does it
tells us the name of the film, it also puts the name out in the public eye so that it will get
noticed. Therefore it needs to be eye catching and original and digital publishing software
can be used to make it creative in achieving its purpose.
Font
A font is a digital file that
describes the typeface. It
includes the size, weight, width
and style of a type face
The font for this DVD cover
is really big to promote their
new movie. You van see in this
poster it takes up a large
portion of the poster. There is
also very small text for the
billing block witch provides
detail if you want to take a
closer look . In addition the
actors names are placed in a
important position so that the
stars that are in the film are
highlighted to the viewers.

Typography
Typography is the design of the
letters this is important because I
the design can be adapted to
make the product look
appealing.
The style of the font in The
World's End poster has been
adapted to match the genre the
film that the poster is
advertising. The font that they
show us is in the style of an old
English newspaper.
It makes the film look like an
action adventure set in the old
times.
IMAGES ON DVD COVERS
On DVD covers the images are also very important to sell the film. It gives the target
audience a sense of what is going to be in the film. The cover will try to have a style which
will appeal directly to people interested in that genre of movie.

Images
Digital publishing software can be
used to create images.
The images for this poster are
interesting because it is showing
flames. These show the genre of the
film and suggest the film is going to
be exciting. It helps promote the
film to the target audience as it
promotes that it is an action and
adventure movie.

Subjects/Objects
On DVD covers the actors are
usually placed in a important position
and usually face the camera and this
is because the DVD cover is trying to
increase sales by showing off the
stars in the film or is trying to
promote new actors.
This film poster has Simon Pegg, a
well known comedian, at the front so
people will immediately identify that
this film will be a comedy.
TEXT AND IMAGE COMBINED

Framing
The framing for this cover is
unique because it is showing a
sign twisted. The words are
part of the images because
they are placed on a sign which
is being burned. This
combination of text and
graphics are put together in a
creative manner and would
require skills in digital software
such as Photoshop or
InDesign or Illustrator
IMAGES ON E-MAGAZINES
On DVD covers, posters and flyers there is a combination of text and image, but they tend
not to need graphics, video or audio embeds, or interactive elements. However for digital
media such as online magazines, online newspapers, and to some extent adverts , you will
find within their product all of these things.
Interactive Elements
On the webpage lots of
interactive links allow you to
navigate easier through the
webpage. Some of these links also
link to and from other webpages.
On the Kerrang! website you can
see that you can download the
bands albums and songs on your
computer or smartphone. This is
good for the Kerrang! company
because they would take a cut out
of the profit made.

Video and audio
Kerrang! Magazine for example
have lots of links to pages about
different music artists, which quite
often will have a video or podcast
of that band embedded. It will
either be a promotional music video
or a short documentary.
They also have a function where you
can stream their television channel
directly from there website. This
means the are able to avoid many of
the costs of hosting a television
channel and to gain more viewers by
being accessible online.
INTERACTIVE ELEMENTS ON
E-MAGAZINES

Graphics
Graphics are similar to images except
they are often 3D or moving images,
and encompass image processing.
These graphics are used frequently in
digital publishing media.
For example, moving graphical adverts
are embedded in the Kerrang! online
magazine. Viewers can click on these
and are redirected to the advertised
product, which would be another
source of revenue for Kerrang.
