Evaluation activity one
1. Evaluation activity one
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions or real media products ?
2. Title of film
• The title ‘Steeze’ is suggestive of a street
name enhancing the urban genre of the
character and film. Using a character
name I feel makes it immediate that the
film opening is introducing life and the
personality and narrative of this character.
The title works in effect as representing all
that is urban within the character of
steeze.
The font ‘ a dam mess’
I feel due to it’s messy fun form is
appropriate to the content of the
opening
From this screen grab and seeing
the film on youtube I feel the title
should be slightly more central
The scene that we have used to put the
title in works well together as you can
see graffiti and writing within the
background giving the effect that the
title has flowed into the scene
3. Setting/ Locations
• Reflecting back on
the locations and
settings I feel that
If we had prepared
ourselves better
for the filming we
could of found and
used a location
that was more
powerful and
challenges the
conventional
locations of skater
urban drama films
The locations that we did use
I feel do convey the urban
landscape
And succesful as they make it
clear to the audience that
this is an urban drama film
4. Costumes and props
• Our choices regarding costumes
and props were to work with
something that was urban and
connoted the values and
attitudes/ role of a young urban
male
• We wanted to use props/
costumes that the audience
would be able to indentify with
as property of a young urban
male.
5. • The character is depicted
wearing mainly black, I felt
that if the character was to
wear to much colour this
would destract and the lack
of colour and use of black
connotes a darkness,
depression, mystery,
authority, and strength .
• The use of the balaclava was
a way in which we could
enhance mystery about the
character but also bring in
this connotation of crime and
deviance without acting
Connotations of black
Power Formaility
Death
Grief
Evil
Mystery
Fear
Unknown
6. Camera work and editing
• Examples of camera
angles we have
used/ effects
Camera angles/ camera
movements we would of used
• Close ups
•Extreme close up
•Long shot
•Medium shot
•High angle shot
Panning
Bird’s eye view shot
Eye level shot
Tilt
7. Title font and style
• The style and font of the title I
feel is suited to this urban
drama. The font is youthful,
urban and not neccecarily
directed at a males audience
completley. It was the most
appropriate and successful as it
is not overly urban or to
distracting from the feel of the
opening.
However if we were not working under time constraints I would of liked to explore the
potential of the title by working with effect to bring it into the scene for example in the
opening sequences of the skater films I had analysed some of them used very appealing
effects that would of captivated their target audience such as, giving the effect the title was
sprayed on with spray paint.
8. Story/ genre
The genre, ‘Urban drama’ I feel is clear
within the opening sequence
It is made clear though the conventions of
urban dramas which we have adopted
within the opening such as,
Classes
Focusing on individuals
Abuse
General suffering/ hardship
Dreams/ aspirations/ sports/ passions
Smoking
Connotation of crime- balaclava
9. Introduction of characters
• As the introducton does not have any dialogue
the use of stills photography within the
opening works in enhancing the narrative and
persona of the main character Steeze.
10. Special effects
• Within our opening we did
not use any special effect as
we did want it to have a
realistic edge and we did not
wish to take away from the
gritty story line. The special
effects we tried to replace
with the use of stills and
moving image entwining
them.
However I feel we
could of explored the
potential of using
special effects on the
way in which the titles
appear
