Unborn
1. The Unborn, released in 2009.
Supernatural Horror.
The previews shows the transformation in her life
from the diurnal to the nocturnal world, and how
she had everyone in her life but the ‘ghost’ takes
them away from her. Which gives the impression
that things can’t get better.
The Trailer
•2 minutes and 7 seconds
•Over a 100 different shots throughout the
sequence, that helps get through the
storyline whilst creating pace and suspense.
•We go from a range of scenes about 3
seconds per shot but as the end draws they
pass the screen within a second.
The trailer shows the main build up of events
to the storyline. Introduces the protagonist
and antagonist. It shows problems they all
have to face and what the outcome; doesn’t
show a resolution to create tension for the
viewer.
2. An establishing shot at the starts show a big old house, which is conventional to
the horror, an isolated building is used and what seems like a mental institute
is also key to the trailer as it helps set the scene and overall feel of the genre.
Characters are stereotypical to the horror genre. Main character Casey portrays an
everyday average woman, stereotypical costumes throughout show this is
conventional to the genre as the protagonist is usually someone of the everyday
average lifestyle. Other characters like the Rabbi fit in with this as they are a
stereotypical in horrors through not just costumes but the character itself. Along
with the disruption itself who’s character fits in with it’s demonic features and
abilities.
3. There aren’t really any main props in the trailer that stand out but mise en scene is
used throughout to create the horror feel. Props like the gurney, the lights and the
camera indicate the exorcism which is significant within the genre.

The trailer is successful as it helps emphasise the genre but also
the sub-genre of supernatural. The fast pace editing linking in
with the sound works well as it helps build up tension and makes
the trailer look more professional.
I looked into ‘The Unvited’ which is similar to The
Unborn in terms of the same look for the trailer like
mise-en-scene, sound, editing and titling proving
that the Supernatural genre is popular.
