Evaluation question 1
1. Evaluation question 1
in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
2. Audience
preview
The first shot seen is of a preview screen on a green background, showing the target audience of all audiences. This is
similar to the preview screen of the āKingsman" film trailer, as I have used a green background with white font. I also used
similar website links such as 'www.viab.co.uk' which helps my trailer be subtly different to āKingsman" and be more
relevant to the UK as this is where I would showcase my film trailer.
In order for my trailer to be different to other trailers, I have changed some of the words and created fictional names, such
as the association that produces the trailer and the website links at the bottom. I did this again to relate my trailer to the
UK, which is where I will show it - I called the association the 'visual image association of Britain' and the website links end
in '-co.uk', which helps my trailer to be different and suit my target location.
I also used a darker shade of green for the background to ensure it was not too bright and matched the genre of the
trailer, action.
3. Production
company
For the production company, I chose to create a logo similar to the 20th century fox logo. I used the 20th century fox because they produce
films in the same genre to my film trailer, such as Deadpool and Kingsman as they are action comedy films. I also aimed to recreate the
logo in terms of visual look because I used a low angle of the text and a drop shadow to highlight the text, which helps the viewer know
what the name is, and so they can refer to similar films from the company.
However there are some differences: I added the text to a wall to make it clearer and changed the font and colour to a silver and brown
palette to represent the action genre ā silver connotes metal and strength, and the background suggests underground locations and spy
activity.
Also, by using the effects in Photoshop I was able to make the lettering appear like two arrows with a cross in the middle. The logo reads
āsuper X filmsā, with the X removed which makes the logo different and harder to read, which meets the tone of mystery in the trailer,
and the arrows facing each other suggests a battle between sides and a fight in the middle with the parts of the cross.
4. Characters and
relationships
The main character in my trailer is a strong male, and his sidekick is a teenage boy. This is similar to the protagonists in the
TV programme āUncleā. The characters are similar because Andy and Errol in āUncleā often have miss-communication
problems and Errol can be manipulative and annoying to his uncle. This is similar to my characters as I have used the
teenager to act as a juvenile character, who sometimes uses his powers for his own benefit and other times be nice to the
main character.
My protagonist is also similar to James Bond because they are both portrayed as strong and individual male characters,
who have exciting jobs and gadgets/weapons.
I have also chosen to include a male villain who is Russian, and a female sidekick who is kidnapped by the villain. This is
stereotypical of action films as the villain is often foreign in British films and women are portrayed as weaker.
5. Location
There are several locations used in my trailer, such as the protagonistās house, a pub and the villainās base. This is a common feature of
action films as they use different locations to add excitement and tension as the viewer doesnāt know what will happen to the characters
in the location. I have chosen to use a pub location as a location, which is similar to the trailer for āCentral Intelligenceā. This is because
pubs are a social and casual place where people of different ages and genders can meet, and the viewer can most likely associate with the
situations as they are young adults who visit pubs.
I aimed to use different props and lighting to add mystery and a āshow without tellingā factor so the viewer can identify the location easily
without losing idea of the storyline.
In the villainās base, I also tried to use close up shots in order to keep parts of the storyline secret and add excitement/tension.
In order to make my trailer different to other action trailers, I used various countryside locations and mise en scene to add a local and
British feel to the film trailer.
6. Props
With any action film, props are important as they are used to battle. In my trailer, I used a silver toy gun, which helps add a
realistic feel to the trailer. This is similar to the shot in the āKingsmanā trailer, where the characters are shown a selection
of guns. This also represents the action genre as the characters use the guns to their advantage and shoot the villains.
I have also used cars as another prop in my trailer because cars, especially sports cars, are used in chase scenes to add
excitement and tension to the overall film.
In my trailer, I used a ford, which appears like a sports car and is fast, and a 4x4 car, which is big and strong. This suggests
that the character driving the car is powerful and able to defeat the villain.
Another prop I used was a pipe bomb, made from a cylinder container. This was used by the villain to add tension and
realism when paired with the ticking sound effect.
7. Camera shots
I have used a variety of interesting camera shots in my trailer, such as close ups, low angles and two shots, to add excitement and
character power. For example, I chose to use a low angle shot of the villain which is different and adds power to him and adds tension to
his actions. I also used a low angle of the protagonist, which adds conflict because the two characters appear strong and so the film isnāt
given away.
This is similar to other action films, such as ā22 Jump Streetā as the low angle of the main characters suggests they are dominant and in
control, paired with the gun props they are holding.
I also decided to use various close up shots, such as in the beginning, to show the emotion of anger in the protagonistās face and help the
viewer to follow the storyline.
I have used two shots of the hero characters, similar to ā22 Jump Streetā which helps show the relationship between them as strong so
they are able to work together well to defeat the villain. In some shots, I chose to have the characters separated, which adds a sense of
miss-communication between them and suggests a weakness to add tension.
8. Costume
The costumes I chose are similar to the costumes in the āSpectreā trailer, as both main characters wear a dark puffer
jacket, short hair and a small amount of facial hair. This conforms with the action genre as the main characters are men
and are seen in smart clothes that are also practical and comfortable.
I also chose to use a small amount of facial hair because it adds an individual personality to the protagonist as he values his
appearance to appeal to the female characters.
I have also chosen for a hoodie for the teenage sidekick because it represents youth and rebellious behaviour, which
suggests the teenager is evil when he uses his super powers, but ultimately he subverts stereotypes and uses his powers to
defeat the villain.
The villain is seen with a long, black cloak and a lipped hat. This helps cover some of his identity, which adds mystery and
excitement for the viewer, and also black connotes evil and violence.
9. Intertitles
My credits and intertitles are similar to the action comedy trailer for āCentral Intelligenceā, as I have used a similar design
for the title and text on screen. For example, I have used āfrom the director of...ā which is also used in the existing trailer,
used to help the viewer identify the film from other films the director has made.
To make my trailer unique, I used a different font and colour. I used a bold and large font which not only makes it easy to
read so the viewer can follow the trailer, but also it suggests the action is big and exciting, which reflects block buster
action films. I also chose the colours red and orange because it connotes heat and blood, which suggests danger and adds
excitement.
10. Special effects
The special effects I have used in this trailer represent the action film genre well because I have used explosions and CGI,
similar to the āDeadpoolā trailer which adds excitement and tension for the viewer as they may not know what happens
after the explosion.
I have also used special effects in order to replicate the super powers of the teenage character and appear realistic, which
adds a unique aspect to my trailer, as it is the teenager who has the powers.
Similar to the āKingsmanā trailer, I have tried to add a gun wall in the trailer, with various weapons such as pistols and
machine guns, to add a sense of power to the protagonist as men are stereotypically seen using guns and explosives.
