Question 1 will sack media studies
1. Question 1
In what ways do your media
products develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
Will sack
2. Teaser Trailer
• Whilst comparing my teaser trailer I will be looking at.
-The Exorcist
-The Last Exorcism
-The exorcism of Emily rose
which will allow me to show how my trailer challenges
the forms and conventions of media products
3. We didn’t use the
green title screens
in our production
because other
trailers similar to
our own did not
have this feature.
Also these are are
commonly used by
American
production
companies and
ours was a small
British one.
4. Both film trailers
we looked at open
with an
establishing shot
which set the
mood and scene.
As to no to be too
boring and
predictable we
opened our trailer
immediately
showing the main
character in
conversation
because it
introduces the
audience to the
main part of our
trailer.
5. Both film trailers we looked at open with an establishing
shot which set the mood and scene. As to not be too boring
and predictable we opened our trailer immediately showing
the main character in conversation.
6. We had planned on filming some of our trailer in a
nearby church but had trouble getting filming
permissions but we managed to used a setup
living room and bedroom to film in which worked
well, probably better than a church scenery. We
used filters and altered the sound of the clips in
order to achieves an old, echo to give more of a
church feel and to make the priest seem like he
was in a church. Many exorsism films feature a
church at some point to intruduce the priest to the
trailer or film.
7. • We designed our trailer to not have a
narration because we wanted to give the
effect that the conversations being held
were first person to give the audience a
more personal feel. This allows the movie
not to be given away by the trailer, we
found that our trailer could be understood
without the need of a voiceover.
8. • In the trailer we decided to not link it to
other films due to that it was our first
production. We would have like to have
included ‘from the makers of…’ a this
would have attracted a wider audience
especially those who enjoyed the previous
or associated productions.
9. We used a typewriter effect where each letter appears at once, followed by another which we used for
the trailer. We used this over the whole duration of the trailer in order to achieve fluid and consistent
continuity. We took this form the Last exorcism because it make it look like a report is being written
about the exorcism as the trailer goes on. The name of the font used is called ‘Norwood High’ and it
seemed to go well with our theme, this font has also been used in our poster and magazine and
means that they can all be linked together as the productions branding.
10. • We took major
inspiration for our
shots from the
last exorcism. In a
few of their shots
in the trailer they
flashed from red
on occasion which
puts a dark twist
on a normal
looking clip and is
a good way to
move from
scenes. We used
this teqneque in
oours in order to
show the rage
and anger from
the possessed
character. The
red also
symbolizes a
demonic power.
11. • We used a
high contrast
effect from
time to time
because it
show a non
human,
almost god
like feel to
the clip. We
wanted to
show this
visually. The
effect was
inspired from
the last
exorcism.
12. This specific show of
the possessed
character shaking his
head was taken from
The Exorcism 1973
because it is often
what you see in
exorcism clips and is
used in most other
exorcism trailers. To
make it appear
inhuman we used
clip markers and
increased the speed
to 30fps which made
the footage jump but
because our camera
was mounted on a
tripod it meant only
the character
appeared to be
moving erratically.
13. • This shot
shows the
point of view
form the
policeman's
perspective
and also
shows that the
priest and
policeman
shows the
control and
authority they
have on the
possessed and
makes them
appear more
powerfull. This
technique has
also been
used in The
Exorcist 1973
14. Special effects
• We didn’t use any special effects in our production to
make our character look more possessed like all blacked
out eyes for example. This was due to not being a high
budget production. We changed the frames per second
to 30 and set markers throughout the clip to give the
impression the character is moving non humanly fast
and possessed. This is more popular in older trailers and
films because they did not have access to the
technology, this hasn’t been used recently because there
are more effective ways to make the character appear
possessed. Not having any special effects in a exorcism
trailer or film has not been done before and makes our
production unique from others.
15.
16. Priests point of view
• This shot show the exorcism from the police officers
point of view. The shot includes the bible which the
preist, our biblical figure is holding. In almost all exorcism
films you se the priest shouting specific chapters from
the bible in a hope to release the demon. We chose to
only have the bible in the shot because we thought it
would make a stronger impact than having the priest in
the shot as well. We used an iconic symbol ofexorsism
which is the holy water which is thrown upon the
character. This has been used in many other exorcism
films so seems obviose to include this in ours to enhance
the shot.
