EUROPEAN CLIMATES AND VEGETATION
 The Earth has different climate zones.
 Europe is located in the Northern
hemisphere.
 Europe spans two of the Earth climate
zones.
 It has a temperate climate and a cold
climate.

EUROPEAN TEMPERATE CLIMATES
European temperate climates
are classified into the
following types:
Oceanic climate
Mediterranean climate
Continental climate

EUROPEAN TEMPERATE CLIMATES
Oceanic or Atlantic climate
(in Western Europe):
 Temperatures are mild in summer.
 Precipitation is abundant and regular.
 This climate has four seasons.
 There are meadows and deciduous forests.
 Great Britain is a country with an oceanic
climate.

EUROPEAN TEMPERATE CLIMATES
 Mediterranean climate (around the
Mediterranean Sea):
 Temperatures are high in summer and mild in
winter.
 Precipitation is not abundant. In Summer months,
there is very little rain.
 There are Mediterranean forests with evergreen
trees.
 This climate is characteristic of the Mediterranean
coast and some interior areas in the South of Europe.

EUROPEAN TEMPERATE CLIMATES
Continental climate:
 Temperatures are high in summer, but
very low in winter.
 Precipitation is higher in summer.
 There are steppes and taiga.
 This climate is characteristic of areas in
Central and Eastern Europe.

EUROPEAN COLD CLIMATES
There are two types
of cold climates:
Polar climate.
Mountain or Alpine climate.

EUROPEAN COLD CLIMATES
Polar climate:
 Polar climates are the coldest on the Earth.
 Temperatures vary between –50 ° C in Winter
and 15 ° C in Summer.
 Precipitation is scarce.
 There is little vegetation in this climate:
tundra (mosses, lichens and small shrubs).
 This climate is found in the North of the
Scandinavian countries and Russia.

EUROPEAN COLD CLIMATES
Mountain or Alpine climate:
 The temperatures are very low in Winter and
cool in Summer.
 Precipitation is abundant. It snows a lot.
 Vegetation: forests.
 This is found at the top of the highest points
of the continent.
