Eudora Welty was born in 1909 in Jackson, Mississippi to Christian and Chestina Welty. She grew up in Jackson and was an avid reader from a young age, frequently visiting the local Andrew Carnegie library. Carnegie libraries were funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who donated money for over 2,500 libraries between 1883-1929 with requirements for communities to provide land and maintenance. Welty went on to become a renowned author, writing short stories and novels that explored life in Mississippi and the American South. She died in 2001 at the age of 92.
