This document summarizes a study evaluating the relationship between genetic polymorphisms in the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) gene and Laminin C1 (LAMC1) gene with the risk of developing pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The study used PCR and restriction enzymes to analyze genetic polymorphisms in the ERα and LAMC1 genes in DNA samples from 33 women with POP and 33 controls. The results found an association between ERα polymorphism and increased POP risk, but no association with LAMC1 polymorphism. The conclusion is that ERα genetic polymorphism, but not LAMC1, is involved in the risk of developing POP.
