This document summarizes a study that estimates the effective number of bits (ENOB) of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) using a histogram test technique. The study estimates code transition levels from histograms of samples from a full-scale sine wave input. Error in the code transition level estimates is determined by comparing to best-fit transition levels. ENOB is then computed based on the corrected rms error. Simulation results for 5-bit and 8-bit ADCs show the estimated ENOB for different input signals and compare favorably to prior studies.
