Essay on Robert Jensens Patriotism
Many people believe that they are patriotic people. But, what truly makes one patriotic? In "Saying
Goodbye to Patriotism" Robert Jensen critiques the effects of patriotism on today's modern society,
the United States, and globalization after the attacks on 9/11. Jensen defines patriotism in his talk
delivered to the Peace Action National Congress as "love and loyal or zealous support of one's own
country." (Jensen 741) But, that is not the only definition of patriotism. One may love living in the
United States so does that make them patriotic? Patriotism is probably one of the hardest words to
define in today's society.
Jensen presents two alternative definitions of patriotism in his speech. The first one suggests that
patriotism is to...show more content...
If the leaders of the country just keep creating policies and the majority of the citizens just accept
them as they are, then this country really isn't that big of a democracy as one may think it is.
In Jensen's talk, he also gives a quote of Emma Goldman's that states, "Patriotism assumes that our
globe is divided into little spots, each one surrounded by an iron gate. Those who had the fortune of
being born on some particular spot, consider themselves better, nobler, grander, and more intelligent
than the living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that
chosen spot to fight, kill, and die in the attempt to impose his superiority upon all others." This
sounds a lot more like what patriotism is today. War is something that has always existed and even
in this modern day in age, it is still considered the best way to resolve conflict. Jensen feels war in
Afghanistan is barbaric because of the fact that people seem to think that their lives are more
valuable than Afghanistan citizens and if innocent Afghans have to die then so be it to achieve the
goals of the United States. But, are the goals of the United States truly patriotic? What are the real
goals of the United States as it embarks on a new war on Iraq? From an Afghani American's
standpoint Tamim Ansary compares modern day Afghanistan to Nazi Germany and he does a pretty
good comparison when he states; "When you think Taliban, think Nazis. When you think bin

Service Shows More than Patriotism The healthcare reform debate has been on the minds of
many Americans in recent years. Democrats have worked to put Obamacare in place in 2009 and
want to fix issues using the existing platform. Many Republicans are currently working to repeal
and replace Obamacare with Trumpcare. The healthcare debate has come to a standstill in
Congress as deep party lines persist. In August 2017, following the fights over the universal
healthcare debate, TCA Regional News reported that Democrat Amy McGrath is running for
Congress in the state of Kentucky against Republican Andy Barr in 2018 (Yeager). McGrath felt
led to run due to Barr's support of repealing the Affordable Care Act and due to the lessons she
learned at...show more content...
This is another image used to demonstrate the American army's protection and promote patriotism.
The value of patriotism is seen throughout military and American flag images in the advertisement.
The value of nontraditional gender roles is subtly seen through the auditory and visual illustrations
in the advertisement. Amy McGrath explains that in a previous experience of hers, her local
Congressman wrote to her that he believed that women should not be allowed to serve in combat as
the image of the letter appears on screen with the parts mentioned highlighted. McGrath explains
that she persisted and joined the Naval Academy anyway. This appeals to nontraditional gender
roles because it persuades the viewers that McGrath is different because she is a woman who broke
the mold in a male–dominated area. McGrath is also seen with having short hair and wearing a dark
bomber jacket, white button–up, and loose pants. McGrath is noticeably not wearing much make–up
and has simple earrings and a wedding band. By wearing non–feminine clothes, McGrath appeals to
value of nontraditional gender roles. McGrath is shown to walking with her husband and young
children down a grassy hill. McGrath is seen in a bright pink shirt and khaki dress pants while
holding her husband's hand. Her husband is wearing a blue button–up shirt and dark dress pants
while holding their toddler. Twin preschooler boys, dressed in the same blue polo and khaki shorts,
run and play in front of their parents.

Essay: Patriotism
Patriotism is generally defined as loyalty and love for one's country. However, patriotism's definition
varies depending on how "loyalty" and "country" are themselves defined. For example, Stephen
Decatur's toast indicates a definition that allows for some types of political dissent. When Decatur
stated, "Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our
country, right or wrong," the naval officer meant that dissention with regards to foreign policy can
be injurious to national pride, identity, and military strategy. Hence, "in her intercourse with foreign
nations may she always be in the right." Yet, Decatur leaves open the possibility for political dissent
with regards to domestic policies. If he were alive in the 20th century, for example, Decatur might
have supported the Vietnam War while also supporting the Civil Rights movement.
However, patriotism can also involve political dissent with regards to foreign policy. A country that
was built on principles of freedom of expression necessitates a type of patriotism that welcomes
anti–war protests and protests against foreign policies that may be considered injurious to the public
welfare. From Vietnam to Iraq, the United States military campaigns have raised questions about
what constitutes patriotism, and what does not. During the Bush Administration, questions about
patriotism became more fervent. As Gitlin points out, patriotism has been too often and too closely

Patriotism In America
Patriotism. How could you even begin to define it? Is it the fireworks on the Fourth of July? Is it
the glory of watching our national team win a medal in the Olympics? Is it an immigrant finally
being able to call America their home? Patriotism is defined as the attachment or sense of pride that
one feels about what they would decide as their homeland. According to many Americans, it's a
feeling we all share as citizens. Everyone has their own definition of what that pride or attachment
consists of. We live within a democratic government; created for the people, by the people. Most
would expect our type of government and patriotism to come hand–in–hand. Our people must feel a
deep pride for their country when they are the ones who elect who should represent them to the
world, right? We choose who we think would be best at running our country for 4 years until we
have the chance to keep the same person or elect someone else. The people of America are the
reason those politicians have power; the people of America can be the ones who take it from them.
We attempt to choose the best because of our pride in our country and the hope to make or keep it
great. There are many instances, however, that would conflict with this thought of being so loyal to
our own government officials....show more content...
There have been many instances, especially recently, where citizens have argued against what the
government has proposed and fought over what the our founding fathers would have truly wanted
for America. The same people who voted for our government officials are now disagreeing with
them. They prefer the ideals that our country was founded on; 'Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of
Happiness' as is stated in our constitution. These citizens sometimes feel as if their rights are being
attacked because of certain popular beliefs and quickly remind others of how our country is to be

Reflection About Patriotism
The colors red, white, and blue have become a staple of freedom within this country, ensuring the
colors consume every room they enter and earn a loud chant of boastful pride. A large portion of
my family, namely the older people, are more right–leaning than they are left. With their opinions
growing more prominent as the 2016 election peaked, I gained insight in how my family
functions. Both the older and newer generations began to express feelings, and for some it was
unexpected. While some Americans can be loyal to their community, want to help others with
their simplest of problems, and ensure that every individual has an amazing life, there will
always be those who take things to an extreme and sadly; those people are the ones who speak the
loudest. There's this strong sense of patriotism and pride in America that mimics devotion or
worshipping of the country. When people go to a public sporting event, or even a public school,
the National Anthem is played and people are expected to stand up and sing along with it, as a
form of expressing pride in the country. Houses proudly display the American flag on a flagpole in
their yard all over, and it is almost impossible to drive in a subdivision or street without seeing one.
While it seems patriotic to most it can seem borderline nationalistic to other countries. Once America
breaches the border on patriotism and nationalism, the country is facing a large issue with how it
displays pride in its country. Without getting

Essay On Being A Patriot
Being a Patriot is something that a person is not born with, but is an option that we all can write
in our present and even our future. Throughout the many years that I've attended Miramar High
School, the definition of being a Patriot never came with a list classifications that discriminated
anyone from being admired, honored, and even receiving the label of being a role model to
many. Regardless of the admiration that a Patriot receives, a true Patriot doesn't wallow in their
admiration, but uses it to encourage their character to become a positive influence and fight for
the righteous way. While reminiscing about the many people who I claim to be Patriots, I'll have
to state that the two main character traits to be a Patriot would have to be responsibility and
tolerance. When you reflect upon the many Patriots throughout life, without aspiration in their
minds and a purpose in their heart, the idea of leaving their home would seem to hold no value to
them, which is why responsibility is one of the key components to becoming a Patriot in the eyes
of many. It's no lie that the world that we live in, is not perfect. From the people who discriminate
for the color of our skin to the ones who judge us because of the wealth class that we were born in,
a Patriot never lets the negative problems of...show more content...
Without it, the many problems that we try to solve can get more powerful in a negative manner
than in a positive one. That is why many Patriots will think about the most ethical and most
effective way of solving the problem rather than finding the effortless way out. We look into this
world and we realize that we can't have our eyes closed to achieve all of our goals, but we can't let
everyone walk all over us, just because they claim to have more knowledge than us. As a Patriot,
I'm tolerant, especially in this world full of people who has more words to speak than

Is it an immigrant finally being able to call America their home? Patriotism is defined as the attachment or sense of pride that one feels about what they would decide as their homeland. According to many Americans, it's a feeling we all share as citizens. Everyone has their own definition of what that pride or attachment consists of. We live within a democratic government; created for the people, by the people. Most would expect our type of government and patriotism to come hand–in–hand. Our people must feel a deep pride for their country when they are the ones who elect who should represent them to the world, right? We choose who we think would be best at running our country for 4 years until we have the chance to keep the same person or elect someone else. The people of America are the reason those politicians have power; the people of America can be the ones who take it from them. We attempt to choose the best because of our pride in our country and the hope to make or keep it great. There are many instances, however, that would conflict with this thought of being so loyal to our own government officials....show more content... There have been many instances, especially recently, where citizens have argued against what the government has proposed and fought over what the our founding fathers would have truly wanted for America. The same people who voted for our government officials are now disagreeing with them. They prefer the ideals that our country was founded on; 'Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness' as is stated in our constitution. • 5. Reflection About Patriotism The colors red, white, and blue have become a staple of freedom within this country, ensuring the colors consume every room they enter and earn a loud chant of boastful pride. A large portion of my family, namely the older people, are more right–leaning than they are left. With their opinions growing more prominent as the 2016 election peaked, I gained insight in how my family functions. Both the older and newer generations began to express feelings, and for some it was unexpected. While some Americans can be loyal to their community, want to help others with their simplest of problems, and ensure that every individual has an amazing life, there will always be those who take things to an extreme and sadly; those people are the ones who speak the loudest. Houses proudly display the American flag on a flagpole in their yard all over, and it is almost impossible to drive in a subdivision or street without seeing one. While it seems patriotic to most it can seem borderline nationalistic to other countries. • 6. Essay On Being A Patriot Being a Patriot is something that a person is not born with, but is an option that we all can write in our present and even our future. Throughout the many years that I've attended Miramar High School, the definition of being a Patriot never came with a list classifications that discriminated anyone from being admired, honored, and even receiving the label of being a role model to many. Regardless of the admiration that a Patriot receives, a true Patriot doesn't wallow in their admiration, but uses it to encourage their character to become a positive influence and fight for the righteous way. While reminiscing about the many people who I claim to be Patriots, I'll have to state that the two main character traits to be a Patriot would have to be responsibility and tolerance. When you reflect upon the many Patriots throughout life, without aspiration in their minds and a purpose in their heart, the idea of leaving their home would seem to hold no value to them, which is why responsibility is one of the key components to becoming a Patriot in the eyes of many. It's no lie that the world that we live in, is not perfect. From the people who discriminate for the color of our skin to the ones who judge us because of the wealth class that we were born in, a Patriot never lets the negative problems of...show more content... Without it, the many problems that we try to solve can get more powerful in a negative manner than in a positive one. That is why many Patriots will think about the most ethical and most effective way of solving the problem rather than finding the effortless way out. We look into this world and we realize that we can't have our eyes closed to achieve all of our goals, but we can't let everyone walk all over us, just because they claim to have more knowledge than us. As a Patriot, I'm tolerant, especially in this world full of people who has more words to speak than Get more content on HelpWriting.net
