Shakespeare s Play Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s Film O
Throughout the course of time, societies views have been persuaded by contextual influences, yet
the core human values have remained unaffected. Through the texts by composers William
Shakespeare and Tim Blake nelson and their texts Othello and the late 20th century contemporary
film O, the key values of trust, honesty and loyalty are explored with contextual influences being
reflected. The values are explored with the use of thematic development of the key issues jealousy
and appearance vs reality and the use of dramatic devices in Othelloand cinematic techniques in O.
Shakespeare s accurate representation explored these values in an Elizabethan context where the
values of loyalty, honour and fidelity were apparent. In contrast, Tim Blake nelsons film express
similar views and attitudes to a more teenage orientated audience and these values are replaced with
modern contextual values such as popular culture, peer pressure and popularity.
Jealousy plays a major role in Othello as it is the driving force which leads to the plays events
being carried out. The theme of jealousy is prevalent through characterization and the dishonoring
of the values of trust and loyalty. The character if Iago is the main who endures jealousy and
dishonours trust and loyalty which in the end he uses as a method to lead Othello to his downfall.
Iago dishonours Othello s trust by stating My lord, you know I love you but this contrasts with
Iago line I follow him to serve my turn upon him .

Using Porter s Generic Strategies
Using Porter s generic strategies, identify examples of organisations following strategies of
differentiation, low cost or low price, and stuck in the middle or hybrid. How successful are
these strategies? An organisation bases its strategy according to its environment, and if
implemented right will be successful. Firms can target their products by a broad target, thereby
covering most of the marketplace, or they can focus on a narrow target in the market (Lynch,
2003). Michael Porter created a generic strategies framework in order for an organisation to gain
a competitive advantage in their industry. Porter considers three generic strategies in his
framework that an organisation can undertake to gain this advantage. He believes that an
organisation falls into either cost leadership (lower cost) or differentiation and once applied in a
broad or narrow scope, as discussed by Lynch, creates focus (Figure 1). Furthermore, some
organisations undertake in more that one of these strategies and if unsuccessful is called the stuck
in the middle strategy. However, if the organisation combines elements of differentiation and
elements of low cost successfully, this becomes and hybrid option and is becoming increasingly
popular amongst firms in the modern day. Figure 1 Source: Porter (1985) The first part of Porter s
framework includes the differentiation strategy across a broad target. The generic of differentiation
strategy involves creating a market position that is perceived

Goodyear Aquatred Case
Goodyear s Aquatred Case
Goodyear, around the late 1980s was developing a tire that would set them apart from the
competition. Unfortunately they were stuck in a time when replacing tires was not high on peoples
list of pleasantries, which will be explained in greater detail. Goodyear developed what they called
the Aquatred tire which was supposed to give greater traction during wet weather and a superior
quality that would have the same traction after much use as some tires did when they were brand
new. However, they faced a few problems along the way. The price for this new tire was going to
be quite expensive. The industry at this time was not looking for a high performance tire so much,
but rather something with a guarantee and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to determine which option to choose, Goodyear weighed the advantages and
disadvantages of each. The advantage of having a premium tire is being able to charge more,
thus generating higher profits. On the other hand, consumer perception at the time was that
buying tires is a grudge purchase and they were not willing to pay the extra money for features
they didn t want. Goodyear s tires had always been marketed toward the average consumer who
wanted a good tire at a good price. The possibility of losing those loyal customers was high. The
second option of which distribution channel to go through also has its advantages and
disadvantages. The advantage of moving to a large wholesaler, rather than just independent tire
dealers, was greater exposure and possibly higher profits. However, Goodyear s past revenue
mainly came from loyal independent dealers, and it could be devastating to business if Goodyear
lost that loyal base. In addition to the cost, independent tire dealers didn t feel Aquatred s premium
features warranted the high cost or that it would appeal to their customers.
In the end Goodyear tried to do too much and forgot their market and what made them so great in
the first place. It is shown that in the 80s and early 90s Goodyear was in commanding lead of their
competitors in the segment they were targeting. I believe that if they were going to launch the tire,
then broadening their channels to a

The American Dream Of An Unbiased Judicial, Executive, And...
Many Americans have the good fortune to be brought up believing that they can trust their
governmental system. Unfortunately, the American Dream of an unbiased judicial, executive, and
legislative branch cannot be equally accessed by all Americans. Some parents find it is necessary
to dispel the myth of the American Dream for their children, to protect their young minds from
future mental strife and in some cases to protect their bodies from future physical harm. This is a
reality in our country today. In the increasingly tense political and social environment corruption
festers and bad politics reign. While the situation may seem hopeless, it is important to realize that
the struggle to ensure equal rights for all has been a cause that countless people have been
committed to throughout the history of our country. They have dreamt and continue to dream of a
better future, one in which race and economic status do not define a child s potential. People have
been fighting for equal treatment since nearly the founding of the nation first to end slavery, then
to stop the legal and social practice of segregation. While discovering its point of origin is unlikely,
it is possible to examine the time frame which saw the struggle for equality fully developed into the
Civil Rights Movement. The movement reached its peak in the 1950s and 1960s with significant
figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin, and Thurgood Marshal. Contemporary with the
development of the Civil

Bernie Madoff s Unethical Behavior
Bernie Madoff is a perfect example of how unethical behavior can turn into corruption. Madoff, a
former investment and stockbroker, was formally introduced to the world as the sole operator in
the largest Ponzi scheme on record. Madoff turned his financial management company into a
colossal Ponzi scheme that swindled billions, from thousands of his investors. According to federal
investigators, Madoff s Ponzi scheme began as early as the 1980 s and continued to operate under
sheer deception and utter lies. Madoff s powerful presence, narcissism, voracity and unethical
behavior had him pleading guilty to eleven federal offenses, including: wire fraud, securities fraud,
money laundering, mail fraud, false statements, lying under oath, larceny,... Show more content on

In this case, it appears that Madoff had many friends and family members who were involved in
the fraud. Speculate about how likely it is that Madoff s own sons, who were employees of the
firm, knew nothing of the fraud as they stated.
Madoff s sons were highly suspected of being aware of the fraud, but they both adamantly denied
this, and charges were never brought because one son killed himself while the other died of
cancer. A federal investigation was on the cusp of charging the son who died of cancer with tax
evasion resulting from the Ponzi scheme before his death this year it was reported.
4.Explain the ethical issues that are associated with running a family owned business. Are these
issues present within Madoff s firm?
Ethical issues associated with running a family owned business, is a lack of checks and
balances, because of familial ties. In Bernie Madoffs case, many of the primary people in the
business were family members such as his chief compliance officer, which is supposed to
reassure investors that everything is as it should be. Madoff s chief compliance officer was his
niece, Shana Madoff. In addition, she had married a former employee of the US Securities and
Exchange Commission who had a role the investigation of Madoff in 1999. The husband may have

MERCURY ATHLETIC FOOTWEAR
Problem statement:
West Coast Fashions, Inc a large business of men s and women s apparel decided to dispose of
one of their segments; Mercury Athletic. John Liedtke, head of the business development for
Active Gear, Inc saw it has a possible opportunity for them to acquire it. The footwear industry is
very competitive, with low growth and stable profit margins. AGI is very profitable but it is
smaller than its competitors, which is becoming a disadvantage. Therefore, Liedtke believes that if
they takeover Mercury will double AGI s revenue, increase it s leverage with contract manufactures
and expand its presence with key retailers and distributions. Liedtke is evaluating the company in
order to find out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to look at it because it is a measure that investors can use to evaluate the financial
health of the company. However Liedkte being more conservative he says that the combined
businesses could achieve and EBIT of 9 % and when looking at the projections for Mercury from
2007 2011 we can see a growth in earnings. So then what are the cash flows if Liedtke thinks the
combined businesses will have a revenue growth of 2% in year 2011 considering we discounting
back to 2006. We need to calculate the Free Cash Flow (FCF) in order to determine if the Net
profit Value is positive or negative. Knowing that we will know if the acquisition should be
undertaken. When looking at the excel sheet we can see that the NVP using the discount rate
given by the case 7.65 % with a growth rate of 3 % gives us an NVP= $ 275,399.78. Therefore
the NVP s value compares the value of the investment made today to the same value of the amount
in the future. So that is the amount AGI needs to pay up front. The free cash flows are made from
the financial statement given in the case and were determined using the FCF method; EBIT (1 Tax

India s A Growing Economic System
For this research report, I want to further the understanding of the Indian attitude, external
opportunities and threats of entrepreneurship, and how the International world and India is
progressing with entrepreneurs. I have an interest in being in working internationally, after gaining
more experience in the corporate/sales area of a company, which is one of the reasons I chose to
explore this topic on an international level. This paper will cover some basics of entrepreneurship
in India.
In India they have a growing economic system. Global Edge states that in 2011, India s estimated

Although India has some of the biggest billionaires living there, more than 30% 50% of the
people in India live below the poverty line on about 50 cents a day. It is a high poverty rate, the
highest among all the BRIC countries. In India this problem is growing and becoming more
unbalanced. This is an issue because of the caste system in India. This castes system makes it
extremely difficult for one to change social classes. Women also have a problem when trying to
break into the workplace, because it is something that is seen as taboo. I recall in a TED TALK
that was shown in a class of mine, it showed how women and lower class citizens of India were
learning about IT and how they were being taught simple key logging types of work in hopes of
the availability of the jobs will help balance the distribution of income through the lower classes.
The key sectors of the company in India are listed as agriculture (17.4%), industry (25.8%), and
services (56.9%). Many belonging to the lower class in India are farmers and they spend quite
some time selling their produce which proves to be a difficult tasks since many rural areas do not
have the means to provide efficient transportation (i.e. underdeveloped roads). Because of this,
many of their produce go bad/expire before they make it to the market. The main agricultural
products that are produced in India are rice, wheat, oilseed, cotton, jute, tea, sugarcane, lentils,

The Namesake Chapter Summaries

story changes hands and is told from multiple peoples point of view as the book continues. The
main people who narrate the story are Gogol, Mrs. Ganguli, Mr. Ganguli, and Moushumi. The
book which covers a significant time gap or about thirty years starts off with Mrs. Ganguli
pregnant with Gogol. Gogol was names so after the Russian author Nikolai Gogol. He is named so
because his father Ashoke had been reading a book written by Gogol years prior while on a train
ride that we find out ended up crashing. Ashoke had survived the train accident by dropping the
page of the book he had been reading which rescue workers had found. Per traditional values their

Comparsion of the Thematic of Violence in Earlier and...
Compare and contrast the thematic of violence in earlier and later Heaney
Heaney s poetry grants sectarian killing in Northern Ireland a historical respectability which is not
usually granted in day to day journalism (Morrison, 68)
Seamus Heaney was born in Derry, Northern Ireland. Derry was a bitterly divided city that soon
became to the fore of the troubles . In the 1970 s Northern Ireland s sectarian divisions hit a new
level of extreme and t the troubles became violent and dangerous in the early 1970 s. With the
change of situation in the North there also came a change in Heaney s writing. His poems seemed
to grow more sociological and political as he delved into the troubled psychology of his homelands
problems. In 1972 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whereas others criticised Heaney for having an unbalanced view of the troubles. Readership was
not affected as we know by Heaney s sales and rewards but reviewers who might represent these
readerships have differed widely in their responses to what the Swedish Academy praised as
Heaney s analysis of the violence in Northern Ireland .
Seamus Deane in his works, observes that although political echoes are audible in Death of a
Naturalist and in Door into the Dark, there is no consciousness of politics as such, and certainly
no political consciousness until Wintering Out and North (Deane, 783). Wintering Out is
divided in to two sections and is the most poetically complexed of Heaney s works to date at that
time. The book is a vital publication to examine when referring to the theme of violence as it is
in this issue we see the emergence of a different style of poem. The title of the poem is even
portraying that of a bleak and dark mode. The title Wintering Out also alludes the reader to the
famous opening line of Richard III, Now is the winter of our discontent ... As we know Richard
III is based on a corrupt state, with murder and violence. Perhaps Heaney was leading the reader
from the beginning to the dark political mode of his new work as reference to a somewhat corrupt
state which has been plagued by an unsolved murder sets the pessimistic for a lot of the poems in
Part One. (O Donoghue, 22)

Questions on Contract Performance Data, Patents, and...
Contract Performance Data, Patents, and Copyrights Discuss at least one (1) aspect of contract
performance that is likely to cause difficulties in your current or future position. Describe a strategy
for overcoming this difficulty. Material delivery problems can present challenges to successful
contract performance, particularly if the customer experiences long delays, is required to halt
production, and/or misses important deadlines (Working and Material Shortages, 2006).
Repercussions for poor contract performance include requests for a per day down time payment or
legal action if there are penalty clauses within the contract for non delivery or late delivery. In
addition, problems of destroy the potential for referrals for new business and clients and limit
prospects for a long term relationship with the customer. In order to safeguard against these
challenge, proper planning and a constraint analysis of project resources is required (Worker and
Material Shortages, 2006). It is important to fully understand the contract language and all penalty
clauses at the onset of the project. Contractors should have an intimate knowledge of and
communication within their own supply chain. A materials shipment tracking software can help
with planning and maintaining transparency with inventory. Further, it is critical to develop a
contingency plan for supply shortages. This may include identifying alternate suppliers or suitable
replacement materials in the event of an emergency. It

Francisco before settling in Dallas. Despite her lack of English language skills, she was able to

Insidious Flowers Attract the Greatest Beauty
John Steinbeck s East of Eden tells the story of the lives of many people, each chapter focusing on
a different person or group. The proponents of the novel trail along the characters and displays a
contrast between them. The characters struggle between evil and good not only with themselves,
but with each other. In his story, East of Eden, Steinbeck places Cathy s demonic and deceiving
personality together with Adam s pure hearted temperament to demonstrate contradictions in nature.
Steinbeck uses the calm, fresh setting of Salinas Valleyto create a distinctive atmosphere. The novel
follows the characters and their families in North America. The beginning of the novel consists of
an atmosphere in which both Adam Trask and Cathy Ames live in. They both live on the east
coast and explore its tenebrous tangibility. Adam lives a life of fear and pain in the east: first in the
gruesome and bloody war, and then with his brother Charles. While this is detrimental to Adam, the
gloominess and susceptibility of the east coast is perfect for Cathy. She learns that there she can

Introduction
Smooth muscle contraction occurs when calcium is present in the smooth muscle cell and binds onto
calmodulin to activate myosin light chain kinase (Wilson et al., 2002). Phosphorylation of myosin
light chains result in myosin ATPase activity thus cross bridge cycling occurs causing the muscle to
contract (Horowitz et al., 1996). There are two known models of excitation and contraction in
smooth muscle, electromechanical coupling (EMC) and pharmomechanical coupling ... Show more

Next, to determine if contraction via the EMC pathway requires extracellular or intracellular
calcium, the second type of stimulus was used and the tissue was stimulated using calcium free K+
depolarising solution. The bathing solution in this experiment was calcium free solution to make
sure all extracellular calcium was eliminated, as without calcium, the EMC pathway is expected to
produce no response.
The second experiment sought to determine whether calcium entry is via L type calcium channels,
therefore, verapamil (10 5 M) was used to block these channels. The tissue was then stimulated
using 0.2ml of Ach (10 5 M) and K+ depolarising solution.
Results
When the tissue was immersed in calcium free solution and stimulated with Ach via the PMC
pathway, a small contraction (1.15g) was observed compared to the baseline contraction trace
(6.37g). Contraction recovered when the bathing solution was changed back to normal Krebs
(5.63g). For the next stimulus, K+ depolarising solution, the baseline control produced a force of
6.17g in normal Krebs solution. When calcium free K+ depolarising solution was used to stimulate
the tissue in calcium free solution, via the EMC pathway, the tissue barely contracted at 0.09g. In
the second experiment, verapamil was added to the bathing solution. When the tissue was
stimulated by Ach in the presence of verapamil, it

Design Experiment
Design Experiment: Enzyme Inhibitors.
Research question: What is the effect of adding lead nitrate solution on the activity of amylase
enzyme?
Aim: To test the effect of adding nitrate solution on the activity of amylase.
Background Information:
Inhibitors are molecules which repress or prevent another molecule from engaging in a reaction.
They are substances that attach themselves onto an enzyme and reduce or prevent the enzyme s
ability to catalyse reactions. Competitive Inhibitors are inhibitors that occupy the active site of an
enzyme or the binding Site of a receptor and prevent the normal substrate or ligand from binding.
An active site is a region on the surface of an enzyme to which substrates bind and which catalyzes

This is because a greater mass of lead nitrate reduces the ability of the amylase to breakdown
starch into maltose. Therefore lead nitrate acts as a non competitive inhibitor reducing the enzyme
s ability to catalyse the reaction. Lead nitrate is non competitive because it affects the enzyme s
activity even though it is present in small quantities. The hypothesis were proven since the lead
nitrate changes the shape of the active site of the enzyme and prevents some starch molecules
from binding to the active site for catalysts. According to the results obtained from the experiment,
my hypothesis is accepted and is correct. My hypothesis was, There is an inverse relationship
between the mass of lead nitrate and the ability of amylase to convert starch into maltose. Despite
the results obtained were correct and proved that the experiment was a success a few variables
emerged during the performance of the experiment that if improved could result to a more accurate
result. We didn t have enough time to do this experiment over and over again so we didn t have
enough results to compare. Another important factor that may have influenced in our experiment
was the quantity taken of the lead nitrate. We didn t have any colorimeter so our result might not be

Objectivism respectively and mostly through those two characters: Howard Roark and Peter
Keating. In her writing she has described Howard Roark as the hero in the story. His struggle to
succeed as an architect on his own develops the essence of the novel s conflict. Roark s
personality serves as a standard by which to judge the other characters; they are either like Roark or
they would allow others in one form or another, to manipulate them. Ayn Randportrays Roark as a
selfish man, in a positive sense meaning that Roark will not accept anyone influencing his life. He
is true to his values, to his convictions, to his thinking, to his mind, and to his

Enron Corporation and Andersen, Llp Analyzing the Fall of...
The case of Enron Corporation and Andersen, LLP can be noted as one of the most infamous fraud
scandals in US history. Investors lost millions of dollars and ruined the public s trust. Enron was
once the seventh largest public company in the United States and Andersen LLP was the world s
largest and most respected business organizations. Enrons stock prices soared to approximately
$100 to less than $10 in 2001. How did these two big giants fall into oblivion and what could have
been done to avoid the disaster of these companies?
Enron Corporation was formed as the result of the July 1985 merger of Houston National Gas and
InterNorth of Omaha, Nebraska. Their headquarters were located in Houston, TX. In its earlier

To make matters worse, when Andersen found problems in the financial statements, they didn t
make corrections due to a conflict of interest. The concern was that if Andersen brought these
problems to light, Enron would walk away and cost Andersen millions of dollars in the long run.
Andersen contemplated dropping Enron as a client, but did not follow through with it. Because the
audit and consulting was done at the same firm, it clouded Andersen s judgment. Andersen
employees in Houston began shredding documents and therefore brought obstruction of justice
charges that destroyed the firm.
There were many issues in this case but one of the main issues that stood out was the fact that
Andersen there was a conflict of interest because Andersen was the auditor and consultant for
Enron. There are positive attributes when auditing and consulting at the same time for a client such
as building a relationship with the client and promotes business; allows the auditor to become
familiar with the clients business environment, and reduces the overall cost of the client. However,
when a firm audits and consults for their client, the audit/consulting firm works so closely to the
client that it makes ethical decisions very difficult to make and the auditors lose objectivity and
become partial due to the conflict of interest.

Film Techniques Used to Emphasize Themes in V for Vendetta
Film techniques used to emphasize themes in V for Vendetta
In the film V for Vendetta, the director, James McTeigue uses symbolism, costume and dialogue to
emphasise the idea of everybody having a right to individuality, and the right and duty to resist
forced conformism.
James McTeigue uses symbolism in the film V for Vendetta to juxtapose the idea of individuality
and the resistance of forced conformity. The first important symbol used in the film is V s mask.
This symbol is shown in all of the scenes V appears in and again in the very last scene. In this
scene thousands of citizens gather wearing the masks and remove them. Masks often symbolize a
character hiding their identity. This final scene when the citizens remove their... Show more content

At the beginning of the film, Evey dresses to blend in with the crowds; she wears light colours,
nothing that stands out. However towards the end of the film, V helps Evey to lose her fear and
discover who she is. He shaves her head. After this point in the film Evey begins to wear darker
coloured clothing such as blacks and greys, and wears her bald head with pride. She does not
cover it with wigs or hats. This is similar to the costume changes shown in the film the Matrix,
which James McTeigue helped direct. While in the Matrix the characters wear darker clothes,
these colours show a change in attitude and the characters desires to resist being controlled and
forced into conformity by the Machines. This change in costume is similar to that of V for
Vendetta, which shows Evey s new found confidence in her identity, and her willingness to resist
conforming to the totalitarian society she lives in. In doing this, the director urges viewers to try
to find their own individuality and resist the conformism in their own lives. He uses this film to
warn viewers of the dangers of not resisting forced conformism, through the lack of change in
costume in the other characters. In 2011 an article was posted on Enotes which reads V s legacy
for change is embodied in Evey, which is reflective of how individuals

My Personal Goals
Persistence is the cornerstone to my character and it fuels my passion towards reaching my

research I have found that bilingual people and those who play instrument not only live longer but

The most significant obstacle to my academic success has been to free myself from societal

this is not easily changed. I am an African American male and I was born in Philadelphia and
raised by a single father in Bartram Village, a low income housing project, which is notorious for
being a haven for drug and gang activity. I was fortunate to have a father who taught me that
what I received from life would be based upon the choices I made. That piece of advice has guided

What Does Vasudeva Teach Siddhartha
It s the Final Countdown
Thesis: Vasudeva, Young Siddartha, and Govinda all help Siddartha achieve enlightenment because
they taught him the Four Noble Truths.
Vasudeva, the Ferryman, taught Siddartha about the Fourth Noble Truth, the eightfold path.
Though Vasudeva does not directly teach each individual aspect of the eightfold path, it can be
argued that since the eightfold path is visualized as a wheel Vasudeva teachings are all connected
to each aspect. An important characteristic of Vasudeva is that he is a listener, he rarely talks. His
listening skills show Siddartha Right Speech because it is about speaking when needed and paying
attention to the other person. From Vasudeva, Siddharthalearned to listen to the voices of the river.
Usually he would hear many voices from the river, but with the help of Vasudeva he learns that All

Persuasive Essay On Gun Control Laws
of sixty two mass shootings done by Mother Jones, about forty nine of the weapons were bought
legally! Twelve of were obtained through illegal methods, and the last one was unknown
(Follman). Whether mentally fit or not, loose gun control laws allow those untrustworthy to buy
guns and possible commit heinous acts. The addition of strict gun control laws can reduce deaths
and crimes rates by firearms drastically, as gun ownership decreases and new regulation can
prevent horrific accidents from happening. Canada serves as a perfect representation of the benefit
of strict gun control laws and how they help improve crime and death due to firearms in America.
Canada has two main laws concerning firearms, the Firearms Acts and the Criminal Codes. The
Firearms Acts pertain to the right to possess firearms, the means of transportation, and offenses due
to violations of the act. This act specifies the rules of permits, such as where one can keep the gun,
what happens to the gun in certain situations (like the death of an owner), and more. The Criminal
Codes pertain more towards the three categories of firearms, non restricted, restricted, and
prohibited firearms. The Criminal Codes go in depth of what guns belong in what class and much
more (Ahmad). The United Stateshowever does have laws pertaining to guns, such as Brady
Handgun Violence Prevention Actand Gun Control Act. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention
Act mandates federal background checks of those who purchase firearms, although Canada has
more of a focus on mental health and addiction ( Brady Law ). Similar to the Firearms Acts and
Criminal Codes, the Gun Control Acts cover a similar basis of the idea of regulating firearms (
Gun Control Act ). While Canada and the U.S have similar laws for firearms, Canada has more
stricter and beneficial laws, and the evidence shows how that has effects on firearmdeaths,

Why is it important to vote? The reason it s important to vote is because it shows the president
integrity, and we need a leader for our country because there would be total chaos and people
would be getting hurt. There would be no one to stop the stuff that would be going on, and no
one could declare and control people from buying guns if they are a felon. A president needs to

World War I and the Home Front Essay
America s involvement in World War I not only impacted the war front but also the people left on
the home front. When America entered World War I in 1917 the government enforced many
measures on its citizens, many of which violated constitutional rights. The biggest measure inflicted
on the American population was censorship. The formation of the Committee on Public
Information (CPI) and the passing of the Espionage Act and Sedition Amendment stole American s
freedom of speech, created an anti German sentiment, and led to deportation during the post war
Red Scare.
After America entered the war, President Woodrow Wilsonrecruited George Creel to head the CPI,

Americans became afraid of and disdainful towards anything German. Affairs associated with
Germans or Germany ceased such as German bands, German courses in schools, and renaming
German associated words such as German measles to liberty measles. Many German Americans
felt loyal to America but still had ties to Germany. With intolerance towards all things German,
German Americans became cautious and discreet in their speech and actions. Ambassador James
W. Gerard warned, but now that we are in the war there are only two sides, and the time has come
when every citizen must declare himself American or traitor!
Government censorship continued with the passing of the Espionage Act in 1917 and the Sedition
Amendment in 1918. The Espionage Act and Sedition Amendment condemned any antiwar activity
or desecrating of the government, Constitution, flag, or military. The American public could not
have an opinion, unless that opinion supported the war and government. Even Wilson stated, Woe

The Massachusetts Bay Colony And Virginia
Kassandra Payette
Mocarski
Academic U.S. History
29 September 2015
The Massachusetts Bay colony and Virginia had a sundry amount of differences as well as
similarities. Each of these colonies was founded upon different ways of living. Digging deeper,
there are many more differences about these colonies than there are similarities. Although both
colonies eventually experienced the help of the natives, each colony set separate rules and laws for
themselves. Virginiais more geographically spread out and more focused on obtaining gold for
personal profit, whereas Massachusetts is more of a united, small farmed colony that focused more
on the efforts for religious freedom.
John Rolfe was an English settler who based the voyage to America simply on the growth of
tobacco. Rolfe s crew, along with many other young men, traveled to Virginia in 1609 to search
for gold. When the ship reached on the shore, all that was seen was sandy beaches and swampy
marshes. Neither of which helped with the growth of the major cash crop. Even after the valiant
attempts to scrounge for gold, there was no success. With the large amount of crops that Virginia
grew, the colony needed to expand west into new land for more room to grow crops. At this time
Virginia was an underdeveloped colony that needed settlers to come live and work. Virginia
introduced the ever growing indentured servitude. Most of the indentured servants were possibly
single men of the lower class. The ship s list of emigrants

Chapter Two: Literature Review Chapter Introduction This chapter presents a review of the
relevant peer reviewed and scholarly literature concerning the emergence of the so called third
sector in many industrialized countries in recent years, the manner in which these trend have
created the social enterprise movement and how these initiative are playing out in a real world
organization in Zambia. A summary of the research and important findings are presented in the
chapter s conclusion. Background and Overview In recent years, there has been an
extraordinary growth of the so called third sector in virtually all industrialized countries in the
world and this growth is having an increasingly profound effect on helping impoverished peoples
overcome the wide range of social and economic forces that are frequently arrayed against them.
For instance, according to Borzaga and Defourney (2001), This sector is involved in the
regulation of economic life when, for example, associations or social co operatives are the
partners of public authorities in the task of helping back into work poorly qualified unemployed
people, who are at risk of permanent exclusion from the labor market (p. 1). The non profit, or
third sector, has assumed new relevance and importance for many people who have been
marginalized and do not have access to other resources for economic development (Yuan, 2005;
Kim, 2011). Social Enterprise For instance, some ocial enterprise is a simple

My Favorite Teacher In High School
Third Grade. Most people remember learning multiplication, getting more homework, and a very
slight increase in responsibility. What s my most vivid memory? The time my teacher was
rushed to the hospital during the school day. My homeroom teacher, Mrs. Hauge is still one of
the nicest teachers I ve had today. She taught the cluster classroom, which is when all the kids

Basically, she was my favorite teacher all through elementary school. While her trip to the
hospital was a traumatic experience for the whole class, it really shaped me as an individual.
Mrs. Hauge is an older teacher. She wears glasses attached to a beaded necklace, and her faded

would go to the front of the third grade hallway with reindeer ears and bells, and sing holiday
songs like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Jingle Bells. Every year after I was in her class,
I returned to the third grade wing on that day to sing songs with her in the morning before school
starts, as did a lot of her other past students. One day in November, I had an exciting day. And not

Conspiracy Theories Are An Integral Part Of Society
Conspiracy theories are an integral part of society to answer the world s unexplained questions.
It is a theory that explains an event or set of circumstances as the result of a secret plot by
usually powerful conspirators (Merriam Webster). There are various ways to categorize these
theories. According to Jesse Walker, there are five kinds: The enemy outside, the enemy within,
the enemy above, the enemy below, and benevolent conspiracies (p. __). On the other hand
Michael Barkun believes there are three types: event conspiracy, systematic conspiracy, and super
conspiracy (p. 6). The conspiracy theory at hand revolves around Purdue Pharmaceuticals (Purdue
Pharma), and their release of opioids. Opium is a plant that was used from 1804 to now. In 1972
Contin was put on the market at a controlled drug release system (Purdue Pharma L.P.). In 1984
MS Contin was put on the market as an extended release formula of morphine, and in 1996
OxyContin was put on the market as an extended release formula of Oxycodone (Van Zee). These
drugs were released in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. According to the Center for
Addiction and Mental Health these drugs are commonly used for pain and recreational use (__).
Purdue Pharmaceuticals did not notify doctors and patients of the drug s addictive properties, thus
creating the opioid addiction epidemic in America. Due to them concealing the truth, a six hundred

Dreaming the Dream in The Great Gatsby, and Of Mice and Men
The American Dream has long been thought the pinnacle idea of American society. The idea that
anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or financial status, could rise from the depths and become
anything they wanted to be with no more than hard work and determination has attracted people
from all around the world. Two writers from America s past, however, have a different opinion on
the once great American Dream. F. Scott Fitzgeraldand John Steinbeckhave given the public their

and Men, respectively. One novel placed during the Great Depressionand the other during the

In a different, yet similar way, Steinbeck also uses irony to illustrate the American Dream. He too
shows the problems of the Dream with his use of the literary device. Before George answered,
Candy dropped his head and looked down at the hay. He knew. George said softly, I think I
knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we d never do her. He usta like to hear about it so
much I got to thinking maybe we would. (Steinbeck, 94) After so much work and pain, George
and Candy realize that their dream has been a lost cause. While kind, Lennie s mistakes have
ended their goal of purchasing their own land and having a better life. George still has a chance of
attaining his goal, but it has been severely injured. In the honest efforts of George, Lennie, and
Candy, Steinbeck presents some form of flaw in the American Dream with his use of the brutal
irony that is the downfall of the trio s dream. Both authors have an apparent detestation towards
what the American Dream has become in their time, and irony proves to be an outstanding
apparatus to capture their thoughts.
The settings of both novels also help the reader observe the authors perspective of the faltering
American Dream. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck places the events of his novel in California

Preface
The Impact of Information Technology on the Workforce of the Future
To determine the impact of information technology on the workforce of the future, I conducted a
study using an historical perspective on the use of information technology in the workplace and by
the workforce.
This study also considered recent trends in workforce management such as telecommuting,
globalization, outsourcing, and off shoring activities. The results of this study revealed that
technological advances in office equipment over the past thirty years have enabled organizations to
improve operating efficiencies, improve communications, reduce costs, increase their global

Computers loaded with word processing, spreadsheet analysis and presentation software programs
have become standard fixtures on each employee s desk. Some of the workforce became mobile,
conducting business outside of the traditional office settings through the use of Personal Digital
Assistants (PDAs), cellular phones and laptop computers. The initial users of mobile technology
were salespeople and executive management; however, easier access to the Internet allowed more
employees to become telecommuters, who conducted work related activities either from their
homes or from some other remote location.
Technological advances in electronic communication may continue to decrease the need for
traditional office setting while increasing the number of telecommuters. Electronic capabilities will
also continue to affect outsourcing, off shoring and globalization efforts by many organizations.
Collaboration technologies, currently being enhanced by Microsoft and IBM, may enable
companies to conduct virtual meetings in the near future. In a virtual meeting, employees from
remote locations conduct real time meetings from their own computers using peer to peer software.
Participants can see one another on computer screens, share computer space and make changes to
product designs or contract documents via a virtual whiteboard.

Never Go Back Stereotypes
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) has all the staples of a clichГ© action film. Car chases with
gunfire, check. Villains killing in the name of profit, check. Witty one liners before epic scenes,
check. It has the plot sequence of a cookie cutter action film and like so many other action
movies, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is clearly gender biased. Jack Reacher, the main
protagonist, is an ex military loner played by Tom Cruise. Suddenly, Army Major Susan Turner
(of course, the lead man s love interest) is arrested for treason. Reacher comes to the rescue,
uncovers a conspiracy with a military contractor, and saves Army Major Susan Turner. Even on
the surface, it is a movie that has overtones of sexism, a message that reads: even a highly
successful woman requires a man. Delve deeper, action movies for generations have ingrained
restrictive roles for women to society. In 2016, only 27 percent of the dialogue came from women

Role Of Economics On Political Change
I also used interpolation to impute missing data for many of my independent variables.
Interpolation can reduce the ability of an independent variable to explain a dependent variable
by reducing the movement of the dependent variable (Allison 2001). Interpolation is comparable
to replacing the actual data with a trend. You don t expect the trend to explain short term
movements in the dependent variable as well as the actual data. Future Research The findings
of this study produce puzzling conclusions. Moving forward, researchers should look at the role
of economics on political change in the South at a more local level. A mixed methods approach
is most appropriate for this future research because it would allow for interviews with local
party leaders to guide the statistical analyses. Also, most people are citizens of a community and
less so citizens of a state, so those people should be better able to notice the economic change on a
community level instead of a state level. One particular problem with doing research at the county
level is that often data is not available at the county level. Some of these issues are solved using
multilevel modeling, but a statistical fix does not cure the absence of data. One of the interesting
findings of this project concerned the role of turnout in affecting party strength. There are several
ways forward. For example, it is possible that turnout drove changes outside of the South. This
seems unlikely because the South had such anemic

Color In Federico Garcia Lorca
In this play, the writer, Federico Garcia Lorca has used colour to symbolize a lot of things.
Colours hold as much importance in ones life as fire and water. Colours have a pivotal role in
this play as well. The use of colour has made it very easy for the writer to explain what the exact
situation was. Also it has been used to show the idea of foreshadowing to the audience. For
example the use of the colour black exposed to the viewers the idea of the deaths of Leonardo and
the Bridegroom particularly.
In Act 1, Scene 1, in the Bridegroom s house, the introduction states that the room was painted in
shades of yellow. Its gives a pleasant environment to the place as it is the colour of gold and
wheat which are considered as the signs of prosperity and wealth. However, the colour yellow is
also the sign on a traffic light portraying caution, and is then ironically contrasted with the deaths
that had taken place previously in the house. Also, as we see the mother s hate and anger towards
the Felix family as she believed the murders got executed, yellow also is associated with betrayal
and egoism. She has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

stabbed in the leg, and is assumed to be in Leonardo s horse, which also makes the audience think

further scenes he has been killed. The colour pink is also ironically used in the scene as pink is the
colour of love, but Leonardo does not love his wife but he loves the bride. Furthermore, he shows
how love was faked in the society at that time. Pink also represents tranquility, however it is again a

The Importance Of Language-Based Communication
The categorisation of humans into various gender related groups is something spanning across time
and cultures. Possible causes of such divisions include grammatical forms of communication, a
prospect investigated by structuralism. A variety of approaches concerned with the classification of
language in the mind (Jenkins, 1992), it demonstrates just how the power of spoken and written
word creates detachments between men and women. Key thinkers including Claude LГ©vi Strauss
and Ferdinand de Saussureare credited with introducing and popularising the movement and
evidence provided by Bourdieu, Louie Low and Abu Lughod shows the utilisation of verbal
communication in contrasting areas. These ethnographies display structuralismvia the linguistic
communications they detail, with their contexts holding great importance as they inform meaning
(Schirato Yell, 2000). Interpretations of the organisation of a Kabyle house, the significance of wen
wu in Eastern Asia and hushed conversations between Bedouin women all relate to the divisive
nature of language in societies. The intention of this report is to determine the degree to which
language based communication establishes the genderbased groups individuals belong to, using
structuralism to explain my reasoning.
A popular topic in anthropological circles since Giambattista Vico published The New Science in
1725, in which structuralism is described as a key mental component of the instinctively poetic

Edith Wharton s Roman Fever
The majority of people in society today believe in free will and that they can choose what happens
in their own life. Others acknowledge an unknown force that shapes their lives, which they have no
control over. This conflict can be explained by the Determinism theory. Determinism is a
philosophy described as human beings having no free willand therefore, cannot control their own
actions and should not be held accountable. This philosophy is seen in Edith Wharton s short story
Roman Fever by her characters Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley as they argue about a letter and an affair
in the duration of the story. Wharton s main characters are on opposing sides of the philosophy of
determinism, with Mrs. Slade representing determinism and Mrs. Ansley representing free will,
respectively and each effectively showing Wharton s disagreement to determinism.
In Roman Fever , Mrs. Slade represented determinism in the duration of the story through her
jealousy and similar emotions. Her thoughts and actions in the story towards her lifelong friend
has traces of jealousy and bewilderment throughout the story. For example when reminiscing on
the days of their youth in Rome, she realized that, There was no one of whom she had less right
to think unkindly than of Grace Ansley. Would she never cure herself of envying her! (Wharton
6). Mrs. Slade talks about how her life is boring and now that her husband has passed away, her
life is even more dreary. She envious of the type of daughter

How Iphone Is The Size Of Its Screen
Over the course of three years, the most meaningful change to the iPhone has been the size of its
screen. A phone with a bigger screen was all the consumer really wanted and if Apple wasn t
willing to provide them with that then Samsung would. After years of sticking with a 3.5 inch
display and watching Android competitors slowly increase their screen size while also increasing
their sales, Apple finally gave in to the obvious trend with the larger 4.7 inch iPhone6 and huge 5.5
inch iPhone 6 Plus. However, as predicted, once Apple released their bigger screened iPhone 6
and 6 Plus, Samsung s sales began to decrease. Now that Apple has an iPhone with a big screen
and skyrocketing sales there appears to be no obvious reason to make it better, but just like every
year as technology changes and improves there is always a demand on Apple to release their
new upgraded phone, this year s version being the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Apple s tagline for
the iPhone 6S is the only thing that s changed is everything , stating that the brand knows the
phone bears a striking resemblance to its 2014 model despite the loads of changes made under
the cover (Beavis 1). The reason behind the similar appearance is due to it being an S year for the
iPhone, which means the basic physical design of the phone, has stayed the same while there has
been a substantial revision to the internals making them faster. S iPhones may lack the pizzazz of a
completely new design, but the iPhone 6S with its

Capital Budgeting Of Florida Department Of Education
Capital Budgeting in Florida Department of Education
Introduction
Capital planning and budgeting is a very vital piece in the Public Budgeting System process. It is an
essential implement in the financial management practice and is effective in both public and
private organizations. It is the method which consists of the determination and the evaluation of the

Sitting Bull and the Paradox of Lakota Nationhood
A Hunkpapa Lakota chief named Sitting Bull and the history of the Lakota nationhood was the
chosen subject of Gary C. Anderson to write a biography on. Although most of the history about
Sitting Bull took place back in the eighteen hundreds, Anderson did not come out with his book tell
around 1995. Addison Wesley Educational Publishers published the book in 1996. The book
follows the history of Sitting Bulland the native Indians fight with the white man over land.
The first chapter goes back in history and sets up the story and setting. It was the eighteenth century
and the Americans were beginning to invade the lands west of the Mississippi River. This caused

One of the most significant religious rituals performed among the Lakota s was the Sundance. They
were performed every June and everyone would come together to form one large village. The men
would dance and stare into the sun until they saw visions. Sitting Bull s first Sundance was
somewhere around his twentieth birthday.
Highly respected for his bravery and insight, Sitting Bull became one of the head chiefs of the
Lakota nation around 1868. Anderson goes on in the book to talk about the defense of the
homeland of the Lakota s from the government, by Sitting Bull and the other tribes. Sitting Bull had
no intention of selling any land and made that clear to the Americans. Land boundaries became a
large issue between the Americans and the Lakotas. Americans pushed the Indians to define the
territories so that purchases could be made.
Not only was the railroad disturbing to hunting but this also made it much easier and cheaper bring

because of the rumor of gold. The Indians went to the government to complain about the unwanted

Disadvantages Of Inflatable Kayak
A short list of common accessories would probably include such things as rod holders, tackle box
mountings and compartments, bait containers, and a wide variety of electronics such as fish
finders, GPS, cell phone holders, marine radios, air pumps for bait tanks and running lights.
Obviously, it is not advised to drill holes into an inflatable kayak! However, many enterprising DIY
riggers have found that a few plastic D rings and some duct tape will make a handy group of
mounting and attachment points on an inflatable kayak. One of the latest and greatest discoveries
among self rigging enthusiasts is that a heavy duty plastic cutting board, normally for kitchen
counter use, can be bungee corded to an inflatable kayak which then makes an excellent... Show

Their light weight not only makes taking them along on a hike a definite plus, but also makes a
nice difference in getting the kayak out of your vehicle and to the shoreline even when you are
able to drive right up to the launch. On average, an inflatable kayak will weigh about half that of
a similar sized rigid kayak. Even many tandem inflatable kayaks weight less than single rigid
kayaks. There is no need for a trailer or roof rack, since they easily will fit into the trunk of even
a compact car, or into the back seat. This ability to fit into a small space adds another big benefit,
storage of your kayak in the off season. While storing your rigid kayak in the winter months
usually means either having sufficient garage space, a storage building, or an outside rack or
cradle of some kind, a deflated kayak will usually need no more storage space than that of a
cooler. Finally there is the price consideration. Inflatable kayaks are generally about half the cost
of a similar sized rigid model. The additional savings of not having to also purchase a roof rack or
trailer has influenced many fishermen to become kayak fishermen when price is their main

Shakespeare s Use Of Metatheatre In Hamlet
Metatheatricality in William Shakespeare s Hamlet
There play within a play is a dramatic device used by Shakespeare to explore the human psyche s
ability to manoeuvre and manipulate by staging performances . Shakespeare premises the entire
drama upon the ghost s revelation of the happenings of the murder and Hamlet engages in a facade
in order to grapple with this reality. The overt presence of metatheatre especially with the enacting
of The Murder of Gonzago and in Hamlet s feigning of lunacy, endeavours to reason with and
validate Hamlet s psychological ongoings but does so with underlying irony. Shakespeare, in my
opinion, hints at the futility of such drastic pretence and enactment with the use tragic irony that
concludes the play. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From a psychological point of view, feigned madness can be grounds on which Hamlet s future
actions can be legitimised, if not at least be accounted for. To commit a murder for the purpose of
revenge, on the basis of a spirit s account would seem rather absurd but by proclaiming madness,
the entire prospect is more believable and by that extension, validates the possibility of such an
account. More importantly, Proser argues that Hamlet s barrage of incoherencies
(transparent to us, opaque to them) acts as a smoke screen for his own soliloquized plot hatching (
Proser 340 ). In a sense, the artifice of madness can assist as a deceptive tool while Hamlet struggles
internally to resolve the moral quandary of vengeance and seeks to confirm the truth behind the
King s murder. Although Polonius incorrectly attributes
Hamlet s madness to Ophelia s love, his detection that Though this be madness, yet there is method
in t (II.ii.223 224) reaffirms his lunacy as not actual craziness but a form of

Touhys, who were white skinned Americans. What makes The Blind Side such a compelling
story is the fact that it tells the true life story of a boy with little or no prospects. It is a film about
human relationships, the need to reach out to the ones less fortunate, but most importantly, it s a
film about believing in oneself and following one s convictions even when the whole world might

Social Class And Social Classes
Social classes play a vital role in dynamic of families. The definition of social class is ambiguous
and has no clearly outlined definition. However it is believed to be a combination of different
aspects such as one s life chances or resources, one s status group, or those who share similar
lifestyles and one s education level make up an individuals social class. Therefore, in an ideal set
up there would 4 social cases the upper, middle, working, and poor classes (Judge 2015) and these
are the 4 that I will be using to distinguish the difference in how parents raise their children across
social classes. One main influence that causes a polarization of social classes are parents economic
resources and education level, thus influencing the jobs parents have and the availability they may
have to invest in their child s life. However the key characteristics that influence the ways parent
raise their children are how they organize their child s daily life, the use of language around their
children, and through social interactions (Lareau 202). However the two main approaches across
social class parents take in raising their child are natural growth and concerted cultivation.
Concerted cultivation approach to parentingis when parents seek to actively enhance their children s
talents, and opinions (Cherlin 2013). Parents are generally college educated and have jobs that
allow for financial stability within the family. Typically this parenting style pertains to upper and

Essay on Michelangelo Buornarriti
Michelangelo Buonarroti was one of the greatest artists of all time. Many people all over the
world throughout history have admired his work and he is possibly the most renowned artist of all
time. Michelangelo completed many artistic pieces during his lifetime, and he did them very
beautifully and in a very inspiring way. MichelangeloBuonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 in the
city of Caprese, Italy, just outside of Florence. Michelangelo s mother died in 1481 when he was at
an early age. Because of this and the fact that his father was governor of his village, Michelangelo

In 1492, when Michelangelo was 17 years old, Lorenzo died and the school broke up. After
Lorenzo s death, Michelangelo worked mainly independently for rulers and religious leaders in
Italy. His first commission was for three marble figures for the tomb of St. Dominic in 1494.
Michelangelo left Florence and fled to Bologna before Charles VIII invaded Florence. It was
here in Bologna that Michelangelo carved an angle for the tomb. He returned to Florence for a
short time in 1495 and carved the Cupid and a St. John. On June 25 of the following year,
Cardinal Riario invited Michelangelo to Rome. It is here that Michelangelo gained recognition.
In 1497, he carved the drunken Bacchus, which is one of the two first important pieces in his
career. The next year he carved his second marble figure called The Pieta for St. Peter s
Cathedral. The Pieta was a beautifully carved and finished statue of the dead Jesus lying across
Mary s lap. Many consider it the greatest work of his early years. Michelangelo created a
sculpture so complex and difficult at the age of only 24 that many artists could never figure out
how he did it. On August 16 of 1501, he was commissioned to complete a sculpture to stand in
the Piazza Della Signora. The city of Florence gave Michelangelo a huge block of marble. It was
with this that he carved the 14 foot, 3 inch David. The David was also one of his most famous

  • 2. Shakespeare s Play Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s Film O Throughout the course of time, societies views have been persuaded by contextual influences, yet the core human values have remained unaffected. Through the texts by composers William Shakespeare and Tim Blake nelson and their texts Othello and the late 20th century contemporary film O, the key values of trust, honesty and loyalty are explored with contextual influences being reflected. The values are explored with the use of thematic development of the key issues jealousy and appearance vs reality and the use of dramatic devices in Othelloand cinematic techniques in O. Shakespeare s accurate representation explored these values in an Elizabethan context where the values of loyalty, honour and fidelity were apparent. In contrast, Tim Blake nelsons film express similar views and attitudes to a more teenage orientated audience and these values are replaced with modern contextual values such as popular culture, peer pressure and popularity. Jealousy plays a major role in Othello as it is the driving force which leads to the plays events being carried out. The theme of jealousy is prevalent through characterization and the dishonoring of the values of trust and loyalty. The character if Iago is the main who endures jealousy and dishonours trust and loyalty which in the end he uses as a method to lead Othello to his downfall. Iago dishonours Othello s trust by stating My lord, you know I love you but this contrasts with Iago line I follow him to serve my turn upon him . ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Using Porter s Generic Strategies Using Porter s generic strategies, identify examples of organisations following strategies of differentiation, low cost or low price, and stuck in the middle or hybrid. How successful are these strategies? An organisation bases its strategy according to its environment, and if implemented right will be successful. Firms can target their products by a broad target, thereby covering most of the marketplace, or they can focus on a narrow target in the market (Lynch, 2003). Michael Porter created a generic strategies framework in order for an organisation to gain a competitive advantage in their industry. Porter considers three generic strategies in his framework that an organisation can undertake to gain this advantage. He believes that an organisation falls into either cost leadership (lower cost) or differentiation and once applied in a broad or narrow scope, as discussed by Lynch, creates focus (Figure 1). Furthermore, some organisations undertake in more that one of these strategies and if unsuccessful is called the stuck in the middle strategy. However, if the organisation combines elements of differentiation and elements of low cost successfully, this becomes and hybrid option and is becoming increasingly popular amongst firms in the modern day. Figure 1 Source: Porter (1985) The first part of Porter s framework includes the differentiation strategy across a broad target. The generic of differentiation strategy involves creating a market position that is perceived ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Goodyear Aquatred Case Goodyear s Aquatred Case Goodyear, around the late 1980s was developing a tire that would set them apart from the competition. Unfortunately they were stuck in a time when replacing tires was not high on peoples list of pleasantries, which will be explained in greater detail. Goodyear developed what they called the Aquatred tire which was supposed to give greater traction during wet weather and a superior quality that would have the same traction after much use as some tires did when they were brand new. However, they faced a few problems along the way. The price for this new tire was going to be quite expensive. The industry at this time was not looking for a high performance tire so much, but rather something with a guarantee and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to determine which option to choose, Goodyear weighed the advantages and disadvantages of each. The advantage of having a premium tire is being able to charge more, thus generating higher profits. On the other hand, consumer perception at the time was that buying tires is a grudge purchase and they were not willing to pay the extra money for features they didn t want. Goodyear s tires had always been marketed toward the average consumer who wanted a good tire at a good price. The possibility of losing those loyal customers was high. The second option of which distribution channel to go through also has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of moving to a large wholesaler, rather than just independent tire dealers, was greater exposure and possibly higher profits. However, Goodyear s past revenue mainly came from loyal independent dealers, and it could be devastating to business if Goodyear lost that loyal base. In addition to the cost, independent tire dealers didn t feel Aquatred s premium features warranted the high cost or that it would appeal to their customers. In the end Goodyear tried to do too much and forgot their market and what made them so great in the first place. It is shown that in the 80s and early 90s Goodyear was in commanding lead of their competitors in the segment they were targeting. I believe that if they were going to launch the tire, then broadening their channels to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The American Dream Of An Unbiased Judicial, Executive, And... Many Americans have the good fortune to be brought up believing that they can trust their governmental system. Unfortunately, the American Dream of an unbiased judicial, executive, and legislative branch cannot be equally accessed by all Americans. Some parents find it is necessary to dispel the myth of the American Dream for their children, to protect their young minds from future mental strife and in some cases to protect their bodies from future physical harm. This is a reality in our country today. In the increasingly tense political and social environment corruption festers and bad politics reign. While the situation may seem hopeless, it is important to realize that the struggle to ensure equal rights for all has been a cause that countless people have been committed to throughout the history of our country. They have dreamt and continue to dream of a better future, one in which race and economic status do not define a child s potential. People have been fighting for equal treatment since nearly the founding of the nation first to end slavery, then to stop the legal and social practice of segregation. While discovering its point of origin is unlikely, it is possible to examine the time frame which saw the struggle for equality fully developed into the Civil Rights Movement. The movement reached its peak in the 1950s and 1960s with significant figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin, and Thurgood Marshal. Contemporary with the development of the Civil ... • 6. Bernie Madoff s Unethical Behavior Bernie Madoff is a perfect example of how unethical behavior can turn into corruption. Madoff, a former investment and stockbroker, was formally introduced to the world as the sole operator in the largest Ponzi scheme on record. Madoff turned his financial management company into a colossal Ponzi scheme that swindled billions, from thousands of his investors. According to federal investigators, Madoff s Ponzi scheme began as early as the 1980 s and continued to operate under sheer deception and utter lies. Madoff s powerful presence, narcissism, voracity and unethical behavior had him pleading guilty to eleven federal offenses, including: wire fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, mail fraud, false statements, lying under oath, larceny,... Speculate about how likely it is that Madoff s own sons, who were employees of the firm, knew nothing of the fraud as they stated. Madoff s sons were highly suspected of being aware of the fraud, but they both adamantly denied this, and charges were never brought because one son killed himself while the other died of cancer. A federal investigation was on the cusp of charging the son who died of cancer with tax evasion resulting from the Ponzi scheme before his death this year it was reported. 4.Explain the ethical issues that are associated with running a family owned business. Are these issues present within Madoff s firm? Ethical issues associated with running a family owned business, is a lack of checks and balances, because of familial ties. In Bernie Madoffs case, many of the primary people in the business were family members such as his chief compliance officer, which is supposed to reassure investors that everything is as it should be. Madoff s chief compliance officer was his niece, Shana Madoff. In addition, she had married a former employee of the US Securities and Exchange Commission who had a role the investigation of Madoff in 1999. Mercury Athletic MERCURY ATHLETIC FOOTWEAR Problem statement: West Coast Fashions, Inc a large business of men s and women s apparel decided to dispose of one of their segments; Mercury Athletic. John Liedtke, head of the business development for Active Gear, Inc saw it has a possible opportunity for them to acquire it. The footwear industry is very competitive, with low growth and stable profit margins. AGI is very profitable but it is smaller than its competitors, which is becoming a disadvantage. Therefore, Liedtke believes that if they takeover Mercury will double AGI s revenue, increase it s leverage with contract manufactures and expand its presence with key retailers and distributions. It is important to look at it because it is a measure that investors can use to evaluate the financial health of the company. However Liedkte being more conservative he says that the combined businesses could achieve and EBIT of 9 % and when looking at the projections for Mercury from 2007 2011 we can see a growth in earnings. So then what are the cash flows if Liedtke thinks the combined businesses will have a revenue growth of 2% in year 2011 considering we discounting back to 2006. We need to calculate the Free Cash Flow (FCF) in order to determine if the Net profit Value is positive or negative. Knowing that we will know if the acquisition should be undertaken. When looking at the excel sheet we can see that the NVP using the discount rate given by the case 7.65 % with a growth rate of 3 % gives us an NVP= $ 275,399.78. Therefore the NVP s value compares the value of the investment made today to the same value of the amount in the future. So that is the amount AGI needs to pay up front. India s A Growing Economic System For this research report, I want to further the understanding of the Indian attitude, external opportunities and threats of entrepreneurship, and how the International world and India is progressing with entrepreneurs. I have an interest in being in working internationally, after gaining more experience in the corporate/sales area of a company, which is one of the reasons I chose to explore this topic on an international level. This paper will cover some basics of entrepreneurship in India. In India they have a growing economic system. Global Edge states that in 2011, India s estimated GDP was $1.843 trillion with 7.8% growth (Global Edge). Although India has some of the biggest billionaires living there, more than 30% 50% of the people in India live below the poverty line on about 50 cents a day. It is a high poverty rate, the highest among all the BRIC countries. In India this problem is growing and becoming more unbalanced. This is an issue because of the caste system in India. This castes system makes it extremely difficult for one to change social classes. Women also have a problem when trying to break into the workplace, because it is something that is seen as taboo. I recall in a TED TALK that was shown in a class of mine, it showed how women and lower class citizens of India were learning about IT and how they were being taught simple key logging types of work in hopes of the availability of the jobs will help balance the distribution of income through the lower classes. The key sectors of the company in India are listed as agriculture (17.4%), industry (25.8%), and services (56.9%). Many belonging to the lower class in India are farmers and they spend quite some time selling their produce which proves to be a difficult tasks since many rural areas do not have the means to provide efficient transportation (i.e. underdeveloped roads). Compare and contrast the thematic of violence in earlier and later Heaney Heaney s poetry grants sectarian killing in Northern Ireland a historical respectability which is not usually granted in day to day journalism (Morrison, 68) Seamus Heaney was born in Derry, Northern Ireland. Derry was a bitterly divided city that soon became to the fore of the troubles . In the 1970 s Northern Ireland s sectarian divisions hit a new level of extreme and t the troubles became violent and dangerous in the early 1970 s. With the change of situation in the North there also came a change in Heaney s writing. Readership was not affected as we know by Heaney s sales and rewards but reviewers who might represent these readerships have differed widely in their responses to what the Swedish Academy praised as Heaney s analysis of the violence in Northern Ireland . Seamus Deane in his works, observes that although political echoes are audible in Death of a Naturalist and in Door into the Dark, there is no consciousness of politics as such, and certainly no political consciousness until Wintering Out and North (Deane, 783). Wintering Out is divided in to two sections and is the most poetically complexed of Heaney s works to date at that time. The book is a vital publication to examine when referring to the theme of violence as it is in this issue we see the emergence of a different style of poem. The title of the poem is even portraying that of a bleak and dark mode. The title Wintering Out also alludes the reader to the famous opening line of Richard III, Now is the winter of our discontent ... As we know Richard III is based on a corrupt state, with murder and violence. Perhaps Heaney was leading the reader from the beginning to the dark political mode of his new work as reference to a somewhat corrupt state which has been plagued by an unsolved murder sets the pessimistic for a lot of the poems in Part One. Contract Performance Data, Patents, and Copyrights Discuss at least one (1) aspect of contract performance that is likely to cause difficulties in your current or future position. Describe a strategy for overcoming this difficulty. Material delivery problems can present challenges to successful contract performance, particularly if the customer experiences long delays, is required to halt production, and/or misses important deadlines (Working and Material Shortages, 2006). Repercussions for poor contract performance include requests for a per day down time payment or legal action if there are penalty clauses within the contract for non delivery or late delivery. In addition, problems of destroy the potential for referrals for new business and clients and limit prospects for a long term relationship with the customer. In order to safeguard against these challenge, proper planning and a constraint analysis of project resources is required (Worker and Material Shortages, 2006). It is important to fully understand the contract language and all penalty clauses at the onset of the project. Contractors should have an intimate knowledge of and communication within their own supply chain. Pig Trachealis Smooth Muscle Pharmomechanical coupling uses Internal Calcium stores whilst Electromechanical coupling uses Extracellular Calcium Crystal Nguyen School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology, The University of Western Australia, WA, 6009 Introduction Smooth muscle contraction occurs when calcium is present in the smooth muscle cell and binds onto calmodulin to activate myosin light chain kinase (Wilson et al., 2002). Phosphorylation of myosin light chains result in myosin ATPase activity thus cross bridge cycling occurs causing the muscle to contract (Horowitz et al., 1996). The second experiment sought to determine whether calcium entry is via L type calcium channels, therefore, verapamil (10 5 M) was used to block these channels. The tissue was then stimulated using 0.2ml of Ach (10 5 M) and K+ depolarising solution. Results When the tissue was immersed in calcium free solution and stimulated with Ach via the PMC pathway, a small contraction (1.15g) was observed compared to the baseline contraction trace (6.37g). Contraction recovered when the bathing solution was changed back to normal Krebs (5.63g). For the next stimulus, K+ depolarising solution, the baseline control produced a force of 6.17g in normal Krebs solution. When calcium free K+ depolarising solution was used to stimulate the tissue in calcium free solution, via the EMC pathway, the tissue barely contracted at 0.09g. • 27. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control Laws of sixty two mass shootings done by Mother Jones, about forty nine of the weapons were bought legally! Twelve of were obtained through illegal methods, and the last one was unknown (Follman). Whether mentally fit or not, loose gun control laws allow those untrustworthy to buy guns and possible commit heinous acts. The addition of strict gun control laws can reduce deaths and crimes rates by firearms drastically, as gun ownership decreases and new regulation can prevent horrific accidents from happening. Canada serves as a perfect representation of the benefit of strict gun control laws and how they help improve crime and death due to firearms in America. Canada has two main laws concerning firearms, the Firearms Acts and the Criminal Codes. The Firearms Acts pertain to the right to possess firearms, the means of transportation, and offenses due to violations of the act. This act specifies the rules of permits, such as where one can keep the gun, what happens to the gun in certain situations (like the death of an owner), and more. The Criminal Codes pertain more towards the three categories of firearms, non restricted, restricted, and prohibited firearms. The Criminal Codes go in depth of what guns belong in what class and much more (Ahmad). The United Stateshowever does have laws pertaining to guns, such as Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Actand Gun Control Act. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act mandates federal background checks of those who purchase firearms, although Canada has more of a focus on mental health and addiction ( Brady Law ). Similar to the Firearms Acts and Criminal Codes, the Gun Control Acts cover a similar basis of the idea of regulating firearms ( Gun Control Act ). While Canada and the U.S have similar laws for firearms, Canada has more stricter and beneficial laws, and the evidence shows how that has effects on firearmdeaths, According to 2010 data available at Statistics Canada, over the past thirty years firearm related homicides have continued to decline. Each of these colonies was founded upon different ways of living. Digging deeper, there are many more differences about these colonies than there are similarities. Although both colonies eventually experienced the help of the natives, each colony set separate rules and laws for themselves. Virginiais more geographically spread out and more focused on obtaining gold for personal profit, whereas Massachusetts is more of a united, small farmed colony that focused more on the efforts for religious freedom. John Rolfe was an English settler who based the voyage to America simply on the growth of tobacco. Rolfe s crew, along with many other young men, traveled to Virginia in 1609 to search for gold. When the ship reached on the shore, all that was seen was sandy beaches and swampy marshes. Neither of which helped with the growth of the major cash crop. Even after the valiant attempts to scrounge for gold, there was no success. With the large amount of crops that Virginia grew, the colony needed to expand west into new land for more room to grow crops. A summary of the research and important findings are presented in the chapter s conclusion. The idea that anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or financial status, could rise from the depths and become anything they wanted to be with no more than hard work and determination has attracted people from all around the world. Two writers from America s past, however, have a different opinion on the once great American Dream. F. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would. (Steinbeck, 94) After so much work and pain, George and Candy realize that their dream has been a lost cause. While kind, Lennie s mistakes have ended their goal of purchasing their own land and having a better life. George still has a chance of attaining his goal, but it has been severely injured. In the honest efforts of George, Lennie, and Candy, Steinbeck presents some form of flaw in the American Dream with his use of the brutal irony that is the downfall of the trio s dream. Both authors have an apparent detestation towards what the American Dream has become in their time, and irony proves to be an outstanding apparatus to capture their thoughts. Technological advances in electronic communication may continue to decrease the need for traditional office setting while increasing the number of telecommuters. Witty one liners before epic scenes, check. It has the plot sequence of a cookie cutter action film and like so many other action movies, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is clearly gender biased. Reacher comes to the rescue, uncovers a conspiracy with a military contractor, and saves Army Major Susan Turner. Even on the surface, it is a movie that has overtones of sexism, a message that reads: even a highly successful woman requires a man. • 38. Role Of Economics On Political Change I also used interpolation to impute missing data for many of my independent variables. Interpolation can reduce the ability of an independent variable to explain a dependent variable by reducing the movement of the dependent variable (Allison 2001). Interpolation is comparable to replacing the actual data with a trend. You don t expect the trend to explain short term movements in the dependent variable as well as the actual data. Future Research The findings of this study produce puzzling conclusions. Moving forward, researchers should look at the role of economics on political change in the South at a more local level. A mixed methods approach is most appropriate for this future research because it would allow for interviews with local party leaders to guide the statistical analyses. Also, most people are citizens of a community and less so citizens of a state, so those people should be better able to notice the economic change on a community level instead of a state level. One particular problem with doing research at the county level is that often data is not available at the county level. Some of these issues are solved using multilevel modeling, but a statistical fix does not cure the absence of data. One of the interesting findings of this project concerned the role of turnout in affecting party strength. There are several ways forward. For example, it is possible that turnout drove changes outside of the South. This seems unlikely because the South had such anemic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This philosophy is seen in Edith Wharton s short story Roman Fever by her characters Mrs. Slade and Mrs. Ansley as they argue about a letter and an affair in the duration of the story.
