St. Thomas Aquinas, was born near Naples, Italy, in 1225. Educated in the
Dominican Order in Paris and Cologne, he devoted his life to the knowledge of God.
He died in 1274, was canonized in 1323. In 1567 he was proclaimed a Doctor of the
Universal Church (NCE 14:13 29).
Martin Luther, was born on the 10th of November in 1483 in the Holy Roman
Empire. He was baptized as Catholic, but he became a significant figure in the
Protestant Reformation. He was a professor of theology, writer, and a monk who
dedicated himself to the Augustinian order. He died on the 18th of February in 1546
and was buried in Wittenberg.
Between the times of Aquinas birth and Luther s death was a 300 year period of
decline in the Catholic Church. While these two people lived centuries apart, they
both significantly contributed to the Catholic Church in many ways, some similar
and others very different.
Aquinas was truly a theologian rather than a philosopher even though he is often
thought as a philosopher. He never truly characterized himself as a philosopher.
Nonetheless, much of his work consists of philosophical topics, and is characterized
as philosophical most of the time. Aquinas philosophical thought has exerted
enormous influence on Christian theology preceding him, especially that of the
Roman Catholic Church.

A report published in 2008 titled Transit Co operation Research Program (TCRP)
synthesis 78 based on the survey responses provided by 94 educational institutions
revealed some facts about the transit systems in college and universities (TRB, 2008).
The most of the survey respondents were from four year universities. All of the
universities indicated that they have either self operated transit system or a public
transportation office operated transit system to serve the campus communities. The
most of the respondents agreed that the headway was less than 10 minutes for these
transit stations in the college. The report showed that 29 transit systems charged no
busfare for students and 26 transit systems charged $1.00 to $1.50 per local bus ride.
However, majority of shuttle services for on campus circulation were offered free to
ride. Another interesting fact mentioned in the report was that around 60% of the
universities utilized remote park and rideservices. The report revealed the fact that

participant observation. This was further divided into three different segments. Each
of these segments featured its own distinct observation site and involved one hour of

Because this is a comparative study, observation sites needed to have certain

controlled variables. The independent variable was the density of the larger
surrounding area, while the controlled variables were the type of public space and
the zoning of the immediate area. Taking into account who I was observing, I
chose to narrow my choices to major commercial intersections. This created a

road users possible (as cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers are all likely to converge at
