We have seen how the use of mimetic devices contributed to Still Alice and Turn of
Mind. In Chapter FIVE I explore the possibility of using Facebook, (a twenty first
century mode of communication), as a mimetic device to augment conventional
prose fiction. In this chapter I want to show how mimetic devices such as letters,
bank statements and reports have already been used in epistolary fiction so that I
can consider their use as models for my own work.
I touch briefly on the history of the use of mimetic devices in the epistolary novel and
go on to discuss how mimetic devices in So Much For That , House Mother
Normal and Flowers for Algernon allow us to hear different voices and create
texture. In SMFT chapters are headed with a bank statement showing how illness
drains people s savings. In HMN, each character is preceded by a clinical report
which includes their cognitive ability. FFA uses a diary or progris report to tell the

The Institute of Medicine has defined five core competencies for healthcare
professionals. These competencies are to provide patient centered care, work in inter
professional teams, employ evidence based practice, apply quality improvement, and
utilize informatics. (Finkelman, 2012, p. 214). Nurse leaders recognize that the need
to put the patient first is at the heart of patient centered care and is significant in all
aspects of nursing care. Patient centered care incorporates collaboration with the
patient and family and takes into consideration cultural diversity or issues that will
affect the patient s ability to manage and maintain their health. Keeping the lines of
communication open with our patients involves assuring that they are kept abreast of
their health management and provided with up to date education to help them utilize
measures to maintain their health. As nurses we are accountable to our patients and
need to stay current with our own education and commit to lifelong learning (Fights,
2012) to be sure we are passing on up to date and relevant information. Acquiring
certification is an important way of validating our practice and proving our
commitment to providing quality patient centered care. Fights challenges us to ask
ourselves if we are committed to lifelong learning or furthering our education.

African Americans were fighting for freedom for centuries. They were treated very
badly and they had supposedly going to have a better way of life after WWII. Keep
reading to find out how African Americans struggled for equality in voting and the

First, African Americanleaders argued that everyone should be treated equally.
They wanted black African American men to be able to vote just like the white
American men did. The whites refused to allow the blacks to vote. They threatened
and beat the blacks, the Jim Crow laws blocked them from doing anything and
everything For example, bathrooms, trains, and in busses they were forced to sit
in the back. African American activists held nonviolent protests to bring change.
Some of the more popular activist leaders were Martin Luther King, Malcolm X,
and Rosa Parks. Unlike Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, Malcolm X held
violent protests. One of the more popular marches that took place during the voting
rights act was the Selma to Montgomery. There were about 550 people marching.
The march bought a lot of public support for the Civil Rights Movement. African
Americans were given outrageous literacy tests. For example, the literacy test we
were given in class was from the State of Louisiana. It stated that the test is to be
given to anyone who cannot prove a fifth grade education. The test was given to

The relationship between a parent and child is potentially one of the most
influential in a child s life. A positive interaction often yields admiration, love or a
sense of support. A negative relationship may yield distrust, animosity or a sense of
solitude. Theodore Roethke s poem, My Papa s Waltz, describes the admiration of
his hardworking father. The speaker, a young boy, depicts roughhousing with his
father in the form of a waltz; expressing his desire to stay up and spend more time
together though their relationship is detached. Seamus Heaneys Digging, instills a
sense of respect, pride, and a slight affliction for the speaker s choice of the pen over

farmer, just arrived from a long day at work, had a drink of whisky and then began
playfully roughhousing with the boy in the kitchen while his mother frowned at the

Nolan
A person s identity relies heavily on one s memories. How can one know who they
are, if they cannot remember who they were and what they experienced to get to the
present? In Memento, director Christopher Nolan highlights the importance of
memory in forming one s identity. The movie follows a man named Leonard who is
determined to track down and kill the man who raped and murdered his wife.
Unfortunately, Leonard suffers from anterograde amnesia, meaning he can remember
everything leading up to the incident, but he is incapable of forming memories of
anything which occurred after his wife s death. Throughout his investigation, Leonard
compensates for his handicap by writing himself notes which he tattoos on his body.
But as Leonard s investigation moves forward, Leonard himself cannot. With his
wife s death as his last memory, he finds himself out of sync with the rest of the
world as his identity remains stuck in the past. In Memento, Nolan uses editing and
mise en scene to reinforce the idea that a person s identity relies heavily upon their
memories.
One of the most outstanding film techniques in Memento is its use of editing. The
scenes of the movie are sequenced in reverse chronological order, with the film
beginning at the storyline s end and ending at its beginning. In doing this, Nolan is
able to mimic an experience for the viewer which is similar to Leonard s anterograde
amnesia. Without previous context for each scene, the audience is often unable to

Most people cannot see reality as it truly is from their eyes. In Athol Fugard s
Master Harold... and the Boys, he shows the apartheid between blacks and whites
in South Africa. While some of these white people wanted to end apartheid, other
people who lived with apartheid for their whole lives do not see the wrongs with
it. These people want change, but do not know that they are the issue which is
known as a psychological barrier. In the play, Athol Fugard uses Willie who struggles

Often times, parents and school board members cause a lot of material to be taken
off the shelves, but there are some that are fighting against censorship. Warren County
school board members voted 3 2 against banning the book Flowers for Algernon .
Challenged a plethora of times this book even made it on the American Library
Association s 100 most challenged list. This book contains sexual content, drug use,
and profanity. And although these topics aren t appropriate for school, they are topics
that will not be hidden from their daily lives. Out of all five school board members,

The topic of war is predominately associated with the history of the world. However,
in English literature, the theme of war is chronicled in various ways that explain past
occurrences and retells stories that occurred in history. One vital genre within English
literature is Modernism; formed in the period of war to convey messages that focus
on the psychological aftermaths of the conflicts. Modernism is literarily defined as
the intentional philosophical divergence of the literature and arts of the olden times,
which occurred in the 20th century, with a shift towards an avant garde style and
