My research involves the synthesizing polyamine starting from readily available
building blocks namely ethylene and carbon monoxide and then using that to
capture carbon dioxide, an undesirable greenhouse gas which contributes to global
warming, from industrial processes. Currently, liquid amines are used industrially
and while they are quite effective, they are costly, toxic, are not very recyclable,
and degrade quickly. The novel use of a polymer as a material for this purpose could
solve many of these issues.
I chose three articles to review to get a better understanding of the current work
being done in the field. The first, Absorbent Materials for Carbon Dioxide Capture
from Large Anthropogenic Point Sources by Christopher Jones gives an overview of
materials currently being used to capture carbon dioxide what I am attempting to do
with polyamine. The second, Steam Stripping for Regeneration of Supported Amine
Based CO2 Adsorbents, also by Jones, is a communications that discusses
regeneration of the amine once it has been used for carbon dioxide capture. The third
by Maschmeyer entitled The Reductive Amination of Aldehydes and Ketones and the
Hydrogenation of Nitriles: Mechanistic Aspects and Selectivity Control relates to the
reaction I am doing (reductive amination of a polyketone). Furthermore, a review

several literary devices to reach this goal of creating an effective criticism. More
specifically, D.H. Lawrence uses the literary devices of hyperbole, syntax, and
allusion to craft an effective criticism of Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter.
The author creates an effective criticism of Hawthorne s work through his use of
hyperbole throughout his essay. For example, Laurence criticizes how Hester Prynne
is put upon [a] scaffold and worship[ed] (Lawrence). Through this extreme statement,
An example of this is when he references James Fenimore Cooper s work
Deerslayer when he discusses how Deerslayer refused to be seduced by Judith
Hutter (Lawrence). By alluding to Cooper s work, Lawrence references how the
character Deerslayer resists Judith Hutter s seduction. Through this, he makes the
criticism of another path that Hawthorne could have taken. Instead of simply giving
in to Hester s seduction, the author makes the point that Dimmesdale could have
resisted Hester s attempts of seduction. This would have driven the story and would
have created a more realistic situation for the reverend. Another allusion the author
makes is when he says Abel! Abel! Abel! Admirable! (Lawrence). Through this
biblical reference, he criticizes Hester is portrayed to be an innocent victim by
comparing her to Abel, the son of Adam and Eve and the murder victim of his
brother Cain. Consequently, Laurence criticizes that Hester is too much of a victim
and that this trait dehumanizes her character and creates a sort of innocent and moral

Walker s Everyday Use takes place in a village in southern United States. The
mother and her daughter, Maggie, unexpectedly met her other daughter, Dee, who
left home for a long time. When Dee returned, it was not to visit her mother and
sister, but to ask for some family s ancestral items such as two special quilts.
Eventually, the mother saw through Dee s vanity and refused to give them to her.
After Dee went away, the mother and Maggie went back to the peaceful life they

I visited my local video and music store and after an interview with the manager I
suggested there might be a better and more efficient way to manage their records.
The better way would be to be to use a computerized system through the use of excel.
My main task would be to create a new system which would be much better than their
current system at organising records and storing records.
The main reason for me choosing a video, and music shop was that these days
people would rather spend a certain amount of money on buying a certain video so
that they can watch it at their will instead of having to pay a certain amount of

be fully computerized and would allow the store to make backup copies very easily.
The rental records could be easily checked as they could be viewed in alphabetical
