This book reflects the shift in interest to supply chain. We have included a chapter on MRP, but
have not included scheduling in the book. Further we have included chapters on strategic sourcing
and logistics in the book. Detailed internal

operations topics related to facility layout have been deemphasized and materials on job design
and work measurement are not included. The book is divided into 14 concise chapters. Our
intent was to design a book that could be used cover to cover in an introductory Operations and
Supply Chain Management course. In developing each chapter we considered how students
would view the material. All chapters are approximately the same in length. Our attempt is to
balance managerial concepts and analysis. This balance does not work out perfectly as some
topics are intrinsically more managerial and others more analytical . Each chapter includes

material that should work well pedagogically in a number of ways. For those who want to
emphasize analysis, problems are developed in each chapter and solved problems included at the
end of each chapter. The short cases at the end of each chapter all require some analysis and
usually have some managerial issues that can be discussed as well. The

Immigrating from one country to another is a challenge that many people face. For some, it
may be a positive change but for others, it is the opposite. The cause for immigrating depends on
the environment and the circumstances that will cause some people to feel they must leave
their country to solve their lives. In doing so, however, they leave everything behind to begin a
new journey that may not be the way they want it to be. The two short stories A Father by
Bharati Mukherjee and My Son the Fanatic by Hanif Kureishi, deal with this issue in the present.
These two stories give a clear perspective on the challenges immigrants might face that is
conflicting with their culture and traditional values. While the characters in both these stories
have different viewpoints, they have similar conflicts with them being generational, religious,
and cultural conflicts. In the first story A Father has immigrated from India to the US. Mr.
Bhowmick is a traditional and a religious person who believes in God and follows his religion
sternly. For example, he recited prayers in Sanskrit to Kali, the patron goddess of his family, the
goddess of wrath and vengeance (Mukherjee 837). At one point his wife nagged that he wasn t

Christianity is the world s largest religion. Two of the five centers are located in Turkey: Istanbul

Cognitive dissonance can formally be defined as feeling of discomfort resulting from inconsistent
attitudes, thoughts and behaviors, ( Communication 90). We will have a feeling of discomfort if
new informations doesn t fit with what we already know and we will take many steps to reduce it (
Communication 90). We do this mainly because we seek psychological consistencies and that
feeling of discomfort can lead us to changing our attitudes and behaviors ( Communication 93). For
example, when we try and keep dissonance from happening we will either ignore the different views
that are presented, change either our views or the other person s views depending on the situation,
or trying to reassure ourselves after making a big decision ( Communication 92). Dissonance also
comes in different forms of impact. We will take into account how severe the situation is before
making a final decision, or the magnitude of the situation ( Communication 94). The magnitude is
how much dissonance is felt ( Communication 94). We take the account of magnitude in by looking
at importance, ratio, and rationale of the situation ( Communication 94 95). Importance is how
significant we see the situation to be (95). The last two parts are ratio, the dissonant cognitions
compared to the consonant cognitions, and rationale which is what we decide the reason behind the
dissonance is ( Communication 95). With the cognitive dissonance theory there are different ways
in which we can perceive information and that help us reduce dissonance ( Communication 96). The
four perception types are selective exposure, selective attention, selective interpretation, and

In my essay I plan to argue that Thomas Kuhn was incorrect when he presented his theory that no
paradigm is better than any other paradigm and how he believed that people who occupy different
paradigms are in different universes, in his book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. I believe
that there is no valid deductive or inductive support for incommensurability, there are examples
against it throughout the history of sciencethat do not exhibit the discontinuity and replacement of
paradigms, as Kuhn s incommensurability thesis predicts, but rather continuity and
supplementation. If this is correct, then there are no compelling epistemic reasons to believe that
Kuhn s incommensurability thesis is true or probable. The argument that the point of the same
kind terms changes or ceases from one theoretical context to another, it does not fundamentally
mean that these two abstract frameworks are taxonomically or methodologically
incommensurable. Kuhn s theory takes a relativist stance and uses it to make all theories and

What does it mean to be pious? In Plato s Dialogues and the Book of Job, the search for the
explanation can be attempted from the readings about Socrates and Job. The two are very
different. One, searches for a definition and questions the meaning of piety, whereas the other, Job,
one of the most pious men in biblical history, sets by example the meaning of piety by suffering

In Plato s Apology, Socrates is accused of impiety and later sentenced to an execution for reasons
that are injust. As a man who has lived his life as an honest and just man, he searches for the
definition of piety, in order to understand the accusation made against him. He turns to Euthyphro, a
wise man who is present at the court, who gives Socrates his explanation as to what it means to be
pious. However, to Socrates, each of the definitions he gives are opinionated and ambiguous and as
a result Socrates is left unfulfilled, with many still unanswered questions in the end.
The first definition of piety that Euthyphro offers to Socrates is that the pious is to do what I am
doing now to prosecute the wrong doer...not to prosecute is impious (6, e). Euthyphro is present
as a witness against his own father who is accused of murder. Socrates appreciates that he believes
so strongly in justice that he would hold his own family member accountable, but is displeased
with this meaning, simply because it is only an explanation and not a true meaning. Socrates wants
to know what pious means in and of itself, not an example or an act of being pious.
Euthyphro s second definition is linked to the gods. He explains that Pious is what all the gods
love, and the opposite, what all the gods hate, is impious (9, e), meaning that piety is determined
by the gods. Socrates finds this to be false, due to the fact that in order for the gods to decide
what is pious, they would all have to agree. However, each god has his/her own opinion about what
is honorable or just and what is not. Therefore, a decision is difficult to reach and Socrates
