The Pros And Cons Of Exoneration Case
The purpose of this article by Garrett (2011) was investigated the problems with invalid
and/or unreliable forensic evidence that lead to wrongful convictions by investigating
exoneration case, in which faulty forensic evidence was presented. This is important to
the fields of law and psychology because forensic evidenceis still used in many cases,
despite not being the most reliable evidence. In exoneration cases using serology, 58%
included invalid testimony, of these 51 cases included an error where the serology
evidence was inconclusive because it matched the victim. Another common error is
analyst erroneously dividing frequencies in half. Microscopic hair comparison was used
in 75% of the exonerees cases and in 60 of these cases, it... Show more content on

In a 1978 study, participants oriented their questions based on if they expected their
partner to be an introvert or an extrovert. In a study where participants were shown a
mock crime file featuring circumstantial evidence, participants who searched for
additional evidence, they interpreted the additional information in a way to confirm
their hypothesis. Motivation goals influence reasoning. There are two kinds of
motivation goals: accuracy goals and directional goals. Directional goals can guide
perception. In a 2006 study where participants were shown a stimuli that could either
be seen as a 13 or a B and then assigned to drink orange juice or another beverage, 72%
of those who were told letter would assign them to orange juice condition saw a B and
61% who were told the number would assign them saw a 13. Suspect confession impact
the way that forensic analyst interpret evidence. In a 2012 study, when participants were
told the defendant confessed, they rated the writing sample on the bank note and the
Miranda waiver to be more similar. Confessions can affect the questions that are asked
by polygraph examiners but they can also affect the way the polygraph is read. When a
suspect has confessed, the examiner is more likely to score the polygraph as deceptive.
Fingerprint analysis is also very subjective, with the estimated reliability of experts
falling between .33 and .8 and the estimated biasability being determined to be .41 and

The Goal, By Dr. Eliyahu M. A Brief
The Goal: Rough Draft The Goal, by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt, is a fictional management
oriented novel that demonstrates Goldratt s, Theory of Constraints via resolving the
personal and professional problems of the story s main character. The story is about a
plant manager named Alex Rogo, as he is six months into his first plant manager position
at a UniCo manufacturing plant. The plant is located in Barrington, Massachusetts,
where Alex grew up. Throughout the book, Alex discovers several concepts, theories and
definitions, with the help of his mysterious mentor, Jonah, by which he can evaluate the
problems in his life and then implement the necessary changes in order to improve or
diminish his professional and personal issues. The first chapter gets the reader
acquainted with Mr. Alex Rogo and his apparent problems with his production plant. This
is shown through a confrontation between Mr. Rogo and his boss Mr. Bill Peach, the
Division Vice President. Bill informs Alex that production of his plant has significantly
been reduced in the six months that Alex has been working, and an important customer
has an order that is several weeks overdue. Bill instructs Alex that he must get that order
shipped before anything else. Bill also says that if the plant does not show substantial
improvement within the next three months, he will close the plant. Since moving back to
his hometown six months ago, it seems adjustment isn t going well for his family. It s

Progressive s Ethical Insurance Fraud Case
Joe Lewis and fellow lawyer Jack Green founded Progressive, after they worked on an
unethical insurance fraud case. From the beginning, they offered innovative ideas, as
they sought to serve their customers, especially high risk individuals who could not
obtain deals elsewhere. Progressive s main focus was to become a leader in the
automotive insurance industry, and in 2006 they were the third largest company in the
automobile insurance industry. However, as premiums declined in 2005 and 2006, and
the market grew stagnant, Progressive had to figure out how to retain and gain market
share. Progressive s stated mission was to reduce the human trauma and economic costs
of automobile accidents. STATED AND IMPLIED OBJECTIVES Profit: Progressive
wanted to be positioned at the higher end of the market so that they could maintain their
historically high margins on their products. In order to ensure high quality products,
Progressive wanted to find a balance between maintaining adequate control over their
policies and allowing customers to customize their individual policies. ... Show more

To achieve this objective, Progressive used detailed data to price the high risk drivers
and conduct further research on customers with unfavorable background records. They
had the specific objective of increasing premiums at a rate of at least 15% each year.
Citizenship: Progressive attempted to hire the best and pay the most, and valued
creative, resilient employees who could handle stressful situations. They envisioned
using their brand to allow customers to feel safe and cared for, in spite of the

Further, U.S. consumers face stubbornly high unemployment and slow economic
growth. In the weakened economy, Kraft had to drive their sales volume with more
advertising and a greater range of products and prices, in what they called a good,
better, best strategy. (Martinne Geller). (February 10, 2009). The economic
environment has not improved and that creates a burning platform for Kraft, our
customers and our industry. Kraft shares were down 22 cents, or 0.5 percent, at
$44.48 in late morning trade. The broader market, as measured by the S P 500 index,
was down more than 2 percent, a day. Kraft said net income rose to $470 million, or 79
cents per share, from $417 million, or 70 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue
increased 3 percent to $4.61 billion. Most of the increase came from volume gains and
selling a more expensive mix of products, with a smaller contribution from price
increases. (Martinne Geller). (February 10, 2009). The company affirmed its 2013
outlook, calling for earnings of $2.60 per share and revenue growth in line with the
rest of the North American food and beverage market. Kraft s revenue in the current
fourth quarter would be flat to down due to a comparison with the years earlier period
when retailers increased orders in advance of a price increase. Kraft would eventually
lose sales of some of its products that it pruned from its portfolio. (Martinne Geller).

Platform Bed Research Paper
A platform bed with storage has become more and more popular because it combines the
convenience and affordability of a futon with a standard mattress and bed frame. A
platform bed is a study in minimalism, sometimes without a headboard or footboard.
In addition to their sleek looks, another big advantage is the extra storage space you
get when you don t have to use a box spring for support. Everybody needs more storage
space. Doesn t seem to matter whether you live in a 400 square foot studio or a 4000
square foot house, there is always more stuff than space to put it in. When you are
shopping for a platform bed, the first thing you need to consider is the size of the mattress
you are going to put on it. This will determine size of your bed. Once you have that
down, the next step is to decide on the type of platform bed you ... Show more content on

They can be made of either wood or meta, or sometimes both. Some less expensive
platform beds are made of a composite material which will not last nearly as long as
metal or wood construction. Many beds have additional storage along the headboard. Of
course, some beds don t come with headboard.
Your bed can be a queen platform bed with storage, king platform bed with storage,
twin platform bed with storage, full platform bed with storage and can be really any
size you like and any color from white, to brown to black and it can be the centerpiece
of your bedroom. Models with sleek hard wood finishes in exotic colors make the bed
into a piece of highly attractive furniture.
For a child s room, a popular choice is the captain s roommate bed. It s basically a
platform bed on top of a set of drawers, or drawers and open storage spaces. Some come
with a headboard that has even more storage. They come in colorful colors with designs
that your children will like. They re perfect for small spaces or rooms with little closet
Adolescent Relationships 10 Things I Hate About You Essay
Over the course of adolescence, people interact with one another, forming relationships,
whether they are healthy or unhealthy. There is a large correlation between the self
esteem of the two people, and the state of their relationship. The lower one s self esteem
in a relationship is, the unhealthier their relationship is likely to be. Conversely, a healthy
or unhealthy relationship can also raise or lower one s self esteem. In the 1999 film 10
Things I Hate About You, the relationship between Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona is
an example of how a healthy relationship can raise one s self esteem, while the
relationship between Bianca Stratford and Chastity Church shows how a low self esteem
can lead to an unhealthy relationship.

Chastity has a low self esteem, as shown in their conversation during the exposition of
the film. When they are discussing Bianca s Prada backpack and their Sketchers, Bianca
is discussing how she likes her sketchers, but loves her Prada backpack. Chastity,
stopping, replies that she loves her sketchers, obviously a bit offended by the subliminal
insult Bianca sent her. However, this only lasts a moment before Chastity plasters a fake
smile on her face and moves on. This scene showed how Chastity s self esteem was low
enough for her to hide the fact that she was hurt and insulted, but also showed the
unhealthy relationship the two friends had because instead of talking about how Chastity
felt and sharing their emotions, they ignored it and moved on. The large problem in this
relationship occurs when Bianca finds out that Joey took Chastity to prom the moment
he found out that he wasn t going to be able to go with her. When Bianca confronts
Chastity, they don t settle the problem in any healthy manners. Instead, Chastity bluntly
informs Bianca that Joey was merely aiming to nail her that night and insults her, likely
cutting off whatever sort of unhealthy screwed up relationship they d had.
In the 1999 motion picture 10 Things I Hate About You, Several interesting adolescent
relationships are portrayed, showing the correlation between self esteem and healthy
relationships. While the healthy relationship
A Balanced Literacy Program Is a Necessity for a Child s...
A balanced literacy program is a necessity for a child s education. The program should
include multiple instructional activities being consistently implemented in the classroom.
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) determined,
37% of fourth graders read below basic level and much higher in minority groups.
(INSERT CITATION) More than 60% of African American and Latino children are
below grade level. A variety of instructional activities are needed to teach children to read
effectively. Each of the activities play a necessary role, but can not stand alone when
teaching children to read. These activities include: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency,
vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. (CITE INFORMATION)
Effective teachers use balanced literacy instruction in their classroom, teachers see the
results in their children s ability to effectively read. In a study conducted by the National
Reading Research Center supervisors were asked to select their highly effective teachers
to be surveyed about their literacy programs in their classrooms. The 89 teachers reported
integrating explicit skills instruction and opportunities to read and write whole, authentic
texts (INSERT CITATION). The teachers consistently reported using authentic lessons.
The lessons were modeled, guided explanations; follow up mini lessons, and assessments.
Lessons were taught using a variety of instructional methods including: whole group,
small groups, and
Political Climate In Public Administration
In 1932, in response to the economic depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt,
promised the people a new deal. The new deal was intended to provide much needed
relief, recovery, and reform to the American people, by seeking to stabilize the economy
and provide jobs to those who were suffering. It forced a change in the structure of
American governmentand pushed it to play a bigger role in the financing of social
programs. This new reform changed how government functioned at the state and federal
levels and introduced new ideas of centralization, management, planning, efficiency
measurement, and new forms of social programs. It was during this time, that
management in the U.S., was recognized as its own discipline and introduced the
political approach to public administration.
Political Climate of the 1930s 1950s, an Overview of Public Administration Theories of
Chester Bernard, Luther Gulick, and Robert K. Morton
Introduction
The purpose of this essay is to explore and compare the theoretical perspectives of
theorists Charles E. Lindblom, Chester Bernard and Luther Gulick, and their impact on
the creation and approach to the science of administration. In the early years, influences
from authors Woodrow Wilson, Frank Goodnow, L D White, and F.W. Willoughby, and
their philosophies of public administration helped to reaffirm the need to separate the
political functions and administrative functions of the government. However, following
WWII, the opposition to
The Pros And Cons Of The United States Government
The United States government needs a strong base and a government that will protect its
people. The people will not survive if there are not officials. Anti federalists wanted each
state to have its own local government which in turn makes the states less unified. If each
state has different laws and there is no centralized government than there is no similarity
between the states other than being on the same continent. The states have to remain
united and have a strong central government so that all Americans have the same rights
and laws that they are governed by. Federalists were people who believed America
should have a strong central government in order to properly govern the people and to
make a regulated economy. A very important line... Show more content on

The country very well could have fallen apart by now and the people would not have a
law to live by. If the anti federalists had gotten their way there would be chaos. The
United States continues to grow but the country only works if it remains united and
follows one supreme voice and law.Government is what holds the people together and
unites them through all the many differences that the people bring. The fabric of
American empire ought to rest on the solid bases of THE CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE.
The streams of national power ought to flow from that pure, original fountain of all
legitimate authority. The people are what make the United States government so
impressive, because without the people there would be no government. People like
Alexander Hamilton who helped create the American economy were crucial in the
prosperity of America. America is a melting pot of all sorts of civilizations that are united
through a very hard working and intelligent government.
Federalists and Anti federalists are very different breeds of people. Federalists wanted a
central government while anti federalists wanted the people to be seperated and
governed by their own states or towns. America needed to have a government that all
states followed because of its size and the growth is would harbor. While both groups of
people brought America where it is today, the Federalists

we change our children through medication. Parents of children whose behavior is

Subjective check lists used to diagnosis ADD and ADHD within the school system is
frighteningly similar to the checklists used to determining Gifted and Talented
children. Family physicians themselves are under a great deal of pressure from
teachers and social workers to prescribe medications such as Ritalin for children who
are demonstrating bad behavior or having a difficult time of learning. Even though
teachers and social workers are trained to notice and help correct issues, they are most
likely not educated on how the drug industry works or the appropriate procedure
regarding drug therapy. It is an extremely frightening lethal mixture of ignorance and
misplaced trust which remains among social workers and teachers. Usually parents
who are receiving assistance through the government receive additional funding for
children who have been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. Many low socio economic
families or single parents often find it very difficult to refuse the added income and
additional assistance such as free babysitting if their child is labeled and diagnosed
with a disorder. Hearing that your child has ADD or ADHD is common place in today
s society. Parents and society as a whole often does not realize that they are labeling
them with a mental disorder which is listed in the DSM IV. DSM IV, is the diagnosis

My Profession Of Counseling Psychology
As a child first it was I was going to be a police officer and no one could tell me
otherwise, then it was I m going to be second grade teacher but by mid junior high
going into high school there were no more changes my mind was set on being a
psychologist. It was my eleventh grade that I knew which one specifically I wanted to
be, a counseling psychologist and my grandma always telling me that people is my job
suit. My value, strengths and interests all rely on building relationships and caring for
others and their feelings. As a result, when I fulfill these needs I feel so greatly
accomplished and beyond satisfied.
Everyone should have values they stand for one hundred percent. My values are
relationships, independence, and support. Achievement and recognition fall into my
academic values meaning I like to use my best abilities and see results vastly, however,
in my profession of counseling psychology you have to work towards something to
make progress or see your patient put effort. With that being said, I wouldn t really
need recognition I would feel I accomplished my job if we make progress and my
patient don t come out as they came. Relationships and support are two big factors I
will need to build a relationship with my patient on trust and if they feel my support in
order for us to communicate properly. When looking into a practice I plan to look for
good working conditions suiting my personal work style and working independently, and
security. These values go, hand
Behind The Formaldehyde Curtain
Having read three essays over the last five days, I can now sincerely say that the way
an essay is written is as important as its topic, when we think about its effect on the
audience. That s actually why I didn t like Behind the Formaldehyde Curtain even
though it was enlightening me about a pretty interesting topic. The writer chose the give
the information step by step, and it was quite boring reading twelve pages of
concatenated data along with some quotes. Also the sentence: The hands should be
cupped slightly for a more lifelike, relaxed appearance (Brady) made me think about
death, in all the cultures, it is showed as if dying is a good thing rather than bad. Why do

Judy Brady also used repetitions in Why I Want a Wife such as: I want a wife who
will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean
(Brady), to make her ideas more effective, whereas Jessica Mitford used quotes from
experts such as: Mr. John H. Eckels, president of the Eckels College of Mortuary
Science, thus describes the first part of the embalming procedure: In the hands of a
skilled practitioner, this work may be done in a comparatively short time (Mitford) and
Jonathan Swift uses facts such as: The number of souls in this kingdom being usually
reckoned one million and a half, of these I calculate there may be about two hundred
thousand couple whose wives 35 are breeders (Swift). I believe that using repetitions
was the most effective one because it helped creating a dramatic punch while giving the
message to the audience. It also occurred to me that all three of the novels aroused
interest during the time they were written, probably because the writers opposed the
common senses on the topic, instead they presented their ideas from a different point of
Essay about Industrial Revolution Led to Labor Unions
As America became more industrial more people left their farms and small towns to
work in the city so they could pay their expenses, whatever they may be. This led to the
minimal pay of workers while the owners became wealthy leading to a functional
economy. Most would receive little money while the rest lived a life of luxury. Since
more factories were opening children, women, and immigrants could now find jobs,
which led to more production which gave more money to the owners of the factories.
Americans feared that industrialists were changing freemen into wage slaves. By 1920,
nearly 20 percent of all manufacturing workers were women, and 13 percent of all
textile workers were younger than 16 years old. In 1900, it was estimated that... Show

The first strike was during the 1870 s in a coal region of Pennsylvania. The conditions
were harsh in the mines and there were few if any safety precautions. A group of Irish
miners organized a union in which they called Molly Maguires. Pinkerton agents were
sent in by the mine owners to control the Molly Maguires, this event led to the
formation of other strike groups. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 was America s
first nationwide strike. The strike was a result of a 10 percent pay deduction by four
of the largest railroads. Nearly 100,000 workers were idled and approximately two
thirds of the railroad mileage across the Unites States was shut down with over 14
states and ten railroads involved (AP Study Notes: Rise of Unions). President Hayes
eventually sent troops to coral the strikers but they were so unorganized that they
eventually stopped and went back to work. The Pullman Strike was an effect to the

while keeping the rent and housing prices the same. Many of the workers joined the
American Railroad Union. Debs, socialists that followed Karl Marx s classless society,
backed up the workers which resulted in them being jailed. The strike is an example of
a secondary labor boycott. The workers cut off the town from food and goods. President
Cleveland ordered troops to break up the strike. The federal courts issued an injunction

The Death Of A Close Family Member Change
How do you think you would deal with death? Would the death of a close family
member change you in any way? How do we know how to accept that loss, and go on
with our own life as if nothing had happened? As a young girl when I started growing
into my teen years. I never once worried about the what if s in life. I was too busy
enjoying life with all the new things it had in store for me, as I was becoming a
teenager. I felt like nothing could harm me, or the familyI loved. To me my family was
invincible. The bad things we would hear about in life like death, or an illness only
happened to those around us. I never really wondered why, but I felt my family and
myself were always safe. I went from day to day not realizing the impact that the death
of a loved one would have on the remaining family members. According to my friends,
I was the spoiled girl next door. They considered me as the only friend they had that
lived a worry free happy go lucky life. Although I did miss my father at times, he was
not home very much, it seemed like he was always at work. My parents made sure I
had everything I needed or wanted, for the most part I was happy. I had no idea that
my life as I knew it was about to change. It all started one Wednesday evening. I had
noticed that my dad was home extra early from work. I could see the troubled look on
his face as him and my mother went into the den and shut the door. I did not give it much
thought at the time. I swept what curiosity I
Becoming A Successful After Secondary Education
It is a dream for most parents to have the opportunity to watch their children full time
without having to worry about working full time, just to pay off their student debt. In the
United states, out of all of the mothers, only 29 percent of mothers are full time stay at
home mothers (D Vera Cohn, Gretchen Livingston, Wang). Cohn, Livingston and Wang
study demographic and ethnic trends for a living (Cohn, Livingston, Wendy Wang).
Sadly, in contrast to the 29 percent of stay at home mother, my friend Holly Haney,
works countless hours every day and has to pay a large sum of her check to student debt. I
wish I would have been more educated on student loans. Even though it was the cool
thing to do back then, it certainly isn t anymore (Holly Haney). Like Holly, I am also
learning that in order for me to become successful after secondary education, I need to
be more educated on the dangers of having student debt , so that my future wife will be
part of the 29 percent of full time stay at home mothers. By looking over the previous
years, even though much has been said about student debt, very little attention has been
paid on the causes and effects of having student debt. There are many important things to
know about student debt, such as what types of loans are available for students and the
advantages and disadvantages of some student loans. I will show what students have done
to get them in financial trouble and some possible solutions that our country can take to
Analyzing Van Gogh s Wheatfield With Crows
In this piece, John Berger discusses the implications of reproducing images and the
changes this brings to the meaning and value of the work. As art became readily
reproduced, people began to alter paintings, photographs, and other medium s into new
pieces with new meanings. These altered forms of art, often provide insight or
commentary into context and meaning of the original pieces. One alteration that Berger
mentions, is the addition of text to an image, for example Wheatfield with Crows by Van
Gogh. Looking at the paintingalone, it appears to be a serene landscape with birds
soaring across the skies. Alone, nothing would cause you to question the face value of
this piece, however when the words This is the last picture that Van Gogh painted
before he killed himself. are printed beneath it, it changes the whole experience of
viewing the image. Suddenly you notice that Van Gogh s short, aggressive brushstrokes
give this painting a tumultuous almost violent feeling. The pathway that leads through
the wheat field has no destination, it goes nowhere. We see that the crows roam the
skies in a disorganized fashion, it is as if nothing in this painting has a purpose or a
plan, everything simply is in chaos. We might ask why crows? Could those birds (so
often associated with death and mortality) flying towards us in the painting, signify Van
Gogh s feeling that the crows, and what they represent, were coming for him?
Honoring Hurricane Katrina
Honoring the Tragedy of Hurricane Katrina
August 29, 2005 may be just another date to most of the American population but for
New Orleans it is a date that weighs heavy on the hearts of the residents. Every year
when this date comes around, residents are reminded of the lost ones they didn t get to
say goodbye too, the pets that were lost, homes that were damaged and lost, families that
were shattered and broken apart due to this tragic event. Thousands of lives were taken
during this time, not including the hundreds of thousands of homes that were lost. Many
people sat on the roofs of their homes trapped inside of unbearable hot attics, or canoeing
through disease waters trying to stay alive until emergency response teams could reach
them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People who view this should feel the agony that the city felt at this time, though they
may not fully grasp the heartache this tragedy brought New Orleans, they can
understand what Katrina did to the city of New Orleans. Emergency responders

firefighter or EMS worker visiting from another state can understand how hard it must
of have been for these responders saving other families not knowing where there
families were. Mothers rocking their babies to sleep, maybe a mother walking with her
family to see this monument will hold her children tight and feel the agony mothers
during this time felt. Feeling the reality that the people who had to sleep in sleeping
bags on the unsanitary floor of the superdome felt. Shedding a tear for the people who
never got to re unite with their families and for the lives lost during this tragic event. This
monument is meant for people to stand at for quite some time and honor the lives that
were lost, and the heartbreaking tragedy that struck the city so many people
Wearing The Pants Analysis
To be completely honest, the topic of this article prevents unneccisary information that
neither expands, nor presents a dominant opinion on the subject of relationship
dominance. It is commonly said today that a woman wears the pants in a family, but that
statement stems from a reverse situation. Wearing the pants relates to a male position and
the definition associated with it stems with the belief that men are the dominant sex. In a
time of striving equality, it is seen as normal, an aspiration even for a womanto be the
head or dominant figure in her family. The article used quotes from other sources to say
that a relationship that had some level of dominance was more healthy, more productive
even (pertaining to children), but that seems
Traditional Approaches To Political Science
Traditional Approaches to political science
The traditional approaches to political science were widely prevalent till the outbreak of

politics which emphasized the study of the state and government. Therefore, traditional
approaches are primarily concerned with the study of organization and activities of the
state.
Characteristics of traditional approaches:
They are largely normative.
Emphasize on the study of political structure.
Made little attempt to relate theory and research.
These approaches believe that studies in political science can never be scientific.

The origin of legal approach can be traced back to the 19th century when the study of
politics also included topics like law and legal systems. For instance political scientists
studying the legalities of the Supreme Court of the United States is predominantly legal
in nature. The political scientists studying the legal approach does not restrict himself to
exploring the legal system as such but goes one step further and also focuses on the
legal and constitutional aspects of political decisions. The legal approach treats political
science as a separate branch of study because they study in detail the legal aspects of the
political system.(Tokani 2002)
Characteristics of traditional approaches:
The traditional approaches, however bear the following characteristics;
1.There is an emphasize on the study of formal institutions and the neglects of political
process.
2.It is focused on the western political European political system and thus, the none
western political system are neglected. It is therefore, cultural
Past Tense In The Great Gatsby
The past tense can affect someone very much, and it makes it hard for a person to
move on for their present and future. It can be really significant for them, they keep on
bringing the past back in their lives, and do everything to bring it back. In this case, is
presented by Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby. Scott Fitzgerald constantly makes Gatsby to bring
his pastwith Daisy Buchanan, and for her is the reason why Jay Gatsby became a
wealthy person. Jay Gatsby, came from a North Dakota. His family were farmers. He
joined the army. While he was in the army, he met Daisy and thought that Daisy was the
most beautiful woman he had ever seen in his life. For him she was really valuable and
special because he wasn t the only one who loved her, many men
Essay on The Need to Treat Obsesity in the United States
The prevalence of obesity related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes and heart
diseases in the US emphasizes the need for concerted efforts to prevent and treat
obesity1 3. A decrease in п‚і5% of body weight significantly reduces cardiovascular risk
in humans4 which proves the urgency of weight management. A combination of drug
and lifestyle intervention is ideal for obesity management5 8. Unfortunately, the current
anti obesity medications that inhibit food intake or absorption are partly effective9,10.
Thus, an alternate approach is to target energy metabolism11 19 due to the fact that
obesity results when energy storage in the adipose tissueexceeds its expenditure20.
However, due to the complexity of adipose tissue21, the fundamental... Show more

Accordingly, AMPK, PGC1пЃЎпЂ and their thermogenic target, the uncoupling protein
1 (UCP1) are dramatically upregulated in K1 KO adipose tissues. Moreover, IP6K1
generated IP7 inhibits AMPK activity in vitro. Based on these preliminary results, our
working hypothesis is that IP6K1 regulates energy metabolism by inhibiting the AMPK
PGC1пЃЎ pathway. To test this, we will measure core body temperature; пЃў oxidation
and browning in adipose depots of K1 KO mice fed a high fat diet or exposed to cold
stress. We will measure пЃў oxidation and mitochondrial respiration in K1 KO
adipocytes and in inducible IP6K1 knock down adipocyte cell lines. Utilizing enzyme
assays and hydrogen deuterium exchange (HDX) studies, we will determine the
molecular mechanism by which IP6K1/IP7 inhibits AMPK. Furthermore, we will
monitor the AMPK stimulator; 5 Aminoimidazole 4 carboxamide ribonucleotide
(AICAR) mediated пЃў oxidation and insulin sensitivity in K1 KO mice. Successful
completion of this aim will establish IP6K1 as a novel regulator of energy expenditure.
Aim 2: Identify functions of IP6K1 in lipolysis. K1 KO mice exhibit enhanced fasting
induced weight loss. They also display enhanced basal lipolysis and downregulation of
the lipolytic modulator perilipin1 (PLIN1) in the adipose tissues. IP6K1 possesses a
lipase motif by which it binds and stabilizes PLIN1. PKA (Protein kinase A)
phosphorylates IP6K1 especially during пЃў adrenergic receptor (пЃў AR)
Cyclohexane Lab
Laboratory 8: Distribution Constant of Iodine Between Cyclohexane and Water
Objective: The objective of the experiment was to determine the distribution coefficient
(the equilibrium concentration ratio) of iodine between the immiscible solvents water
and cyclohexane. This experiment was a study of equilibrium. The distribution
coefficient will be derived from the data obtained by performing a chemical analysis for
iodine in the water layer.
Procedure: First, approximately 120 mL of aqueous iodine and 75 mL of sodium
thiosulfate was obtained. A buret was rinsed with several 2 3 mL portions of sodium
thiosulfate solution and then the buret was filled with the solution. Next, 10.0 mL of
iodine solution was measured in a graduated cylinder and transferred to a 250 mL
Erlenmeyer flask. A graduated cylinder... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A few crystals of potassium iodide was added to the flask and then swirled to dissolve
the solid potassium iodide. The volume of the liquid in the buret was read. The liquid
in the buret was titrated with the thiosulfate solution until the brown color of iodine
had disappeared. Afterward, 1 mL of starch solution and then thiosulfate solution was
added until the blue color of the starch iodine complex disappeared. The volume of the
liquid in the buret was read again. Also, a large test tube was cleaned and dried. 50 mL
of iodine solution was carefully measured with a 25 mL graduated cylinder. Next, 5.0
mL of cyclohexane was measured and added to the graduated cylinder. The test tube
was stoppered with a rubber stopper. The mixture was shook for one minute at first,
then for about five minutes. The process was repeated, where the 50 mL of iodine
solution in a 25 mL graduated cylinder was obtained, and then a second 50 mL of
iodine solution and 8.0 mL of cyclohexane was added. Next, the cyclohexane layer was
removed with a Pasteur pipet from the first test tube into a beaker. In addition, 25.0 mL
of the water layer was poured into a clean,
Compare And Contrast Gattaca And Brave New World
Life extensions are critically dependent on futuristic medical advancements. However, a
strong noble compass is needed to ensure scientific advancements do not cross moral
ethics of life. Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, and the movie Gattaca,
directed by Andrew Niccol, propose technologically advanced societies that challenge
ethical and moral views. Although Brave New Worldand Gattaca relate in genetic
discrimination, they differ in technology s powers and limits, as well as the resiliency
of the human spirit. Both works emphasize genetic discrimination as a major part of
their society. Brave New World uses technology to create a utopian society free from
non conformity. Furthermore, it places individuals into separate levels of social class
based on the perceived needs of the World State. These different classes provide a
specific purpose. The protagonist, John, lives in the Savage Reservation outside of the
World State. The Reservation is a dystopia, as it has a degenerated environment and
individuals with no self control. John is relegated to the bottom of the social class due
to his genetic identity and living style. If one s different, one s bound to be lonely
(Huxley 145). Like John, Vincent in Gattaca also receives prejudice from the utopian
society for his genetic composition. He is considered invalid due to his heart condition.
Like Brave New World, Gattaca is a utopian environment created by technological
advancements to limit possible error.
Prostitution Is The World s Oldest Profession
Prostitution is known as the world s oldest profession. It has been in practice since the
beginning of time; whether it be legally or illegally. Prostitutes typically women are
either accepted or shunned depending on the society they live in (Jenkins). At a point in
time in Southern India, the Devadasi culture required girls to become prostitutes when
they reached their puberty years in order to gather dowry money until it was outlawed in
1988 (Kelly). Despite the potential risks that prostitutionhas, it is still advocated in the
twenty first century. In the United States, prostitution is illegal everywhere other than ten
counties in Nevada. The most infamous brothel, called The Mustang Ranch, resides in
Sparks, Nevada (Nevada s). Prostitution may reduce poverty; however, due to the
increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases, abuse against women, and human
trafficking, The Mustang Ranch should be shut down and prostitution must be outlawed
in those ten counties. The Mustang Ranch first opened its doors in 1951, even though
prostitution was not legal in Nevada until about twenty years later. Joe Conforte, The
Father of Legalized Prostitution, took over the brothel in 1967 with his wife, Sally
Burgess. Although he built a positive image for himself by feeding the hungry and
offering free sessions to veterans, he was convicted of tax fraud in 1971, so The
Mustang Brothel was seized and sold to the IRS in 1990 (A History). Then, Lance
Gilman purchased the brothel
Positive Effects Of Urbanization And Its Effects On The...
Evans Oppong Dr. Nagle ENG 111 30 August 2017 Effects of Urbanization on the
Environment Recent data has shown that the world s total population is doubling;
however, the world s urban population is tripling. In the early 1800s, only 2 percent of
the world s population lived in urban areas (Urbanization; an environmental force to
reckon with). This is a sharp contrast to what we have today. The promise of ample job
opportunities, higher wages, and a better standard of living have been the main luring
factors for attracting people into cities. Today about 50 percent of the world s
population lives in urban areas. It is estimated that by 2050 about 60 70 percent of the
world s population will be living in urban areas (Urbanization; an environmental force to
reckon with). This growth trend of the urban populace is troubling since it has
tremendous bad effects on our environment which in turn has bad effects on our health
and well being. Transformation of some parts of the land surface for urban utilizations is
a standout amongst the most irreversible human effects on the worldwide biosphere. It
accelerates the loss of exceptionally productive farmlands, increases energy demands,
affects climate change, and pollutes the land, air and water bodies. These effects of swift
urban expansion go far beyond the urban areas to the surrounding remote areas. With the
rapid urban expansion, comes the demand for more housing. This has resulted in the
conversion of a lot of lands
Feminism In English Literature
I will board a train and allow it to lead into a horizon I will not recognize .
The academic discipline of women s writing as a discreet area of literary studies is
based on the experiences, day to day happenings, historically been shaped by their gender.
These texts emerge from and intervene in conditions which are usually different from
those produced by men. Women novelists have incorporated the recurring female
experiences in their writings and it has affected the cultural and language patterns of
Indian literature. They have stylized pattern in the whole context of Indian writing. Initial
writings of Indian context gave priorities to male experience. It later changed to a style
where women wrote about their perceptions and experiences within a domestic
household. In the 18th century, there was a decline in woman writing. The reformist
movement and women s active participation against the British rule in the 19th century
paved way for a rebirth in the women s literature in India. Over the years, the world of
feminist ideologies showed influences in the English literature in India.
Indian women are conditioned to a blind dependence on men and in a sense the whole
purpose of a woman s life is to live for him and not following her own ambitions. She
has to ensure the love of man for her existence. Women in a global basis can be seen
suffering and submitted to patriarchal power. According to Simone de Beauvoir, a
woman is a womb, an ovary, she is a female this word is
Types Of Memory And Memory Essay
Have you ever had an eventful story of your childhood that you seem to always retell
every time you meet someone new? That is because you are able to access the memory
of the event in your mind that was stored in your long term memory. There are three
different types of memory each one having a different purpose. First being the long term
memorywhich stores memory s for long periods of time. Next is short term memory also
known as working memorywhich only last for an estimated 15 30 seconds. Finally is
sensory memory which is the ability to remember sensory information. Throughout time
it has been constantly said that women have better memory than men. In order to gain a
better understanding between the difference of genderand memory multiple tests have
been conducted. With regard to memory this study is focused primarily but not limited
to short term memory. Short term memory meaning the capacity to store a minimal
amount of information for a short period of time. Conductive to this study the research
covers a large array of different tests in order to determine which gender has the
superior memory. These multiple test includes but isn t limited to test discerning faces
of people of different and same races, telling apart different shapes, words, and figures,
as well as determine object location through memory. Each group was tested based off of
their memory and their ability to recall what they were shown. Thus given the results of
these multiple studies we are able to
Zeus In Greek Mythology
Zeus Zeus is the head God of Greek Mythology. He is also known as the God of the
storm cloud. He is related to Athena, Hades, and Poseidon. His characteristics are
strong and very very powerful. He is most of the time represented by the oak tree and
his sacred animal is the eagle. He s the most common known Greek God. (Hamilton 27)
After the glorious victory of the Olympian gods over the Titans, Gaea, the Mother Earth ,
became very angry with Zeus, the King of the Olympian Gods, because she felt that he
had treated her sons, the Titans, unfairly.Gaea therefore unified with Tartarus (the symbol
of the depths of the Underworld) to create a devastating monster which was meant to
destroy Zeus and take his place. They gave the monster the name
Comparing Upton Sinclair s Life And Accomplishments
Born in 1878, Upton Sinclair came into the world with high prospects; his mother was
from a wealthy family, and his father carried the respected name Sinclair. A hero of the
War of 1812, Sinclair s great grandfather had accumulated prestige. However, the Civil
War along with Upton s father s alcoholism left the Sinclairs with little to their famous
name. As a result, the family often moved from boarding house to boarding house,
unable to pay the rent. Priscilla, Sinclair s mother, was a polar opposite of her husband.
She condemned all self indulgences; even coffee, naming it a stimulant. Sinclair
followed her example and never touched a drop of alcohol and practiced restraint in his

Sinclair s poetic imagery concerning the dead animals was to represent the fate of the
workers, and instead made the reader sick to their stomach (Wilson). This
misinterpretation, however, was powerful force which demanded an immediate change.
The Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act passed in 1906, and led to the
development of the federal Food and Drug Administration (Upton Sinclair s The Jungle).
With the publication of The Jungle, Sinclair became internationally famous and even
more involved in social issues. He went on to muckrake the steel and glass making
industry as well as continuing to lobby for meatpacking
The Disadvantages Of Living At Home
While attending your college classes, some of your classmates may live in a dorm on
campus, while others may commute from home. Yes, we are all trying to achieve the
same goal, a diploma, but it is the struggles that lead up to earning that piece of paper that
we must take into consideration. Cost, opportunities, and distractions all should be
considered, and that is why commuting from home would be the smartest choice when
attending college. When discussing cost, it can be a huge difference maker whether
you are choosing to live at home or on campus. When you choose to live on campus,
you have to experience dorm life, pay room and board, and live off of cheap food.
Coming from a student who currently lives at home while attending college, I save so
much more moneythan some of my friends who live on campus. An advantage of living
at home is that I am capable of paying off my student loans as I go through school
because tuition is much cheaper and you get to work as well. You can work whether
you live on campus or at home, but you get to save more money while living at home
because you have less tuition and expenses. Not having to worry about all of the student
loan debtafter college takes a lot of stress off of me. While living at home, I also have
been able to buy my own car and make payments on it monthly. I will be able to have it
paid off before some people my age are given the opportunity to purchase one. The
money you save while living at home is most definitely

animals, in the ocean there are no self sustaining captive populations, Animals were
needed from the wild to maintain genetic survival skills. Bottlenose dolphins, orcas and
beluga whales are the only some of who have been bred with bit of success, but even
these do not have self sustaining populations, so that we have to help them otherwise, we
may not be able to see them again.
Conclusion:
Captive breeding has effect the Society in a big way. Most of the animals in the world,

Why I Want To Be A Co-Op
I sit here staring at the screen of my computer trying to determine which programs to
apply for and if I will apply to college or university. Deciding my future is so difficult.
A few months ago you would have never caught me even considering college. I had
also never considered recreation and leisure. It was not until I began my co op in July
2016 that I finally began to consider recreation and leisure as an option. When I first
decided to do the co op program as a recreation assistant at a retirement home, I thought
it would be an easy two credits, a way out of getting a summer job and something fun to
do in July during the summer holidays. While my first reasons to participate in the co op
program were correct, my co op experience was much more than that. I loved the
relationships I created with the residentsand the activities I participated in. My
experience had my mind thinking this could be a future career for me. Further, when I
began to consider recreation and leisure, I had only considered it from a university
perspective. That was until my third week at GuelphLake Commons when I spent a day

I had never really considered college; I guess I just figured I would go to university;
however, Josh made some really good points. It is a waste of money to do something
so general in university for four years to end up with nothing in the end. Recreation
and leisure is available in colleges for a lot less money than in university. This may be
the perfect comparison for university and college. It is very probable that in university
it is more learning about recreation than it is participating in recreation like in college.
My head is spinning and I am very confused. Now not only do I need to determine what
I want to do in the future, but I need to decide if I want to go to college or

The weather at the time was mostly cloudy at approximately 45 degrees fahrenheit
with a relative humidity of 62 percent. Wind averaged to be about 10 miles per hour
from the northwest. The Battalion Chief arrived in less than a minute to size up that
there was heavy smoke coming from the front and rear of the attic with fire in the rear.
At 1719 Hours E123 which was Herbies Engine arrives on scene. At this time BC19
assumed incident command and spoke with one of the occupants to be informed that
everyone was out of the building. Herbie along with a firefighter (pipeman) advanced a

firefighter opened multiple doors to the rear covered porch. That firefighter did not
inform command or his commanding officer of what he had seen. This led to a
delayed discovery that the entire stairwell was engulfed in fire. A captain on the first
floor informed Herbie that there was fire in the rear covered porch and stairwell over the
radio. There was no reply by Herbie to confirm he got the message, but companies
carried on. Meanwhile, around 1723 Hours, E49 applies water in the rear attic window

the first hole in the roof. All these steps almost immediately lead to chaos for Herbie and
his firefighter. Ventilation was not being controlled and nobody knew exactly where

Howl By William Ginsberg
Howl by Allen Ginsberg: A Reflection on Institutions In the midst of radical changes in
America during the 1950s as a result of the Cold War, the Beat Generation came into
existence. America in the 1950s was an age of conformity, something the Beats were
against. Individuality was thrown out the window. The middle class emerged. In the
suburbs, every house looked the same and everyone wanted to buy what their neighbor
had and keep up with societal norms. Everyone acted the same way and shared the same
beliefs as everyone else. Society in the 1950s, were confined to institutions in which Allen
Ginsbergwrote about in the poem, Howl. In fact, he met some of his fellow beat poets at
his university and a companion whom he dedicates this poem to at a psychiatric ward.

universities, the government, and psychiatric wards created a conformist society that
stifled creativity and individuality. Ginsberg opens the poem with the line, I saw the best
minds of my generation destroyed by madness (1). The best minds he refers to were not
the elites but the outcasts such as poets, musicians, and the underprivileged. They were
against a conformist society that didn t allow them to express themselves freely. Society
rejected them and their attempts to break free from institutions. They sought many ways

In the weakened economy, Kraft had to drive their sales volume with more advertising and a greater range of products and prices, in what they called a good, better, best strategy. (Martinne Geller). Kraft shares were down 22 cents, or 0.5 percent, at $44.48 in late morning trade. The broader market, as measured by the S P 500 index, was down more than 2 percent, a day. Kraft said net income rose to $470 million, or 79 cents per share, from $417 million, or 70 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue increased 3 percent to $4.61 billion. Most of the increase came from volume gains and selling a more expensive mix of products, with a smaller contribution from price increases. (Martinne Geller). (February 10, 2009). The company affirmed its 2013 outlook, calling for earnings of $2.60 per share and revenue growth in line with the rest of the North American food and beverage market. Kraft s revenue in the current fourth quarter would be flat to down due to a comparison with the years earlier period when retailers increased orders in advance of a price increase. Kraft would eventually lose sales of some of its products that it pruned from its portfolio. (Martinne Geller). (February 10, 2009). Intangible Resources 1.

  • 7. Adolescent Relationships 10 Things I Hate About You Essay Over the course of adolescence, people interact with one another, forming relationships, whether they are healthy or unhealthy. There is a large correlation between the self esteem of the two people, and the state of their relationship. The lower one s self esteem in a relationship is, the unhealthier their relationship is likely to be. Conversely, a healthy or unhealthy relationship can also raise or lower one s self esteem. In the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You, the relationship between Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona is an example of how a healthy relationship can raise one s self esteem, while the relationship between Bianca Stratford and Chastity Church shows how a low self esteem can lead to an unhealthy relationship. At ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chastity has a low self esteem, as shown in their conversation during the exposition of the film. When they are discussing Bianca s Prada backpack and their Sketchers, Bianca is discussing how she likes her sketchers, but loves her Prada backpack. Chastity, stopping, replies that she loves her sketchers, obviously a bit offended by the subliminal insult Bianca sent her. However, this only lasts a moment before Chastity plasters a fake smile on her face and moves on. This scene showed how Chastity s self esteem was low enough for her to hide the fact that she was hurt and insulted, but also showed the unhealthy relationship the two friends had because instead of talking about how Chastity felt and sharing their emotions, they ignored it and moved on. The large problem in this relationship occurs when Bianca finds out that Joey took Chastity to prom the moment he found out that he wasn t going to be able to go with her. When Bianca confronts Chastity, they don t settle the problem in any healthy manners. Instead, Chastity bluntly informs Bianca that Joey was merely aiming to nail her that night and insults her, likely cutting off whatever sort of unhealthy screwed up relationship they d had. In the 1999 motion picture 10 Things I Hate About You, Several interesting adolescent relationships are portrayed, showing the correlation between self esteem and healthy relationships. While the healthy relationship

The new deal was intended to provide much needed relief, recovery, and reform to the American people, by seeking to stabilize the economy and provide jobs to those who were suffering. It forced a change in the structure of American governmentand pushed it to play a bigger role in the financing of social programs. This new reform changed how government functioned at the state and federal levels and introduced new ideas of centralization, management, planning, efficiency measurement, and new forms of social programs. It was during this time, that management in the U.S., was recognized as its own discipline and introduced the political approach to public administration. Political Climate of the 1930s 1950s, an Overview of Public Administration Theories of Chester Bernard, Luther Gulick, and Robert K. Morton Introduction The purpose of this essay is to explore and compare the theoretical perspectives of theorists Charles E. Lindblom, Chester Bernard and Luther Gulick, and their impact on the creation and approach to the science of administration. In the early years, influences from authors Woodrow Wilson, Frank Goodnow, L D White, and F.W. The people will not survive if there are not officials. Anti federalists wanted each state to have its own local government which in turn makes the states less unified. If each state has different laws and there is no centralized government than there is no similarity between the states other than being on the same continent. The states have to remain united and have a strong central government so that all Americans have the same rights and laws that they are governed by. If the anti federalists had gotten their way there would be chaos. The United States continues to grow but the country only works if it remains united and follows one supreme voice and law.Government is what holds the people together and unites them through all the many differences that the people bring. The fabric of American empire ought to rest on the solid bases of THE CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE. The streams of national power ought to flow from that pure, original fountain of all legitimate authority. The people are what make the United States government so impressive, because without the people there would be no government. People like Alexander Hamilton who helped create the American economy were crucial in the prosperity of America. America is a melting pot of all sorts of civilizations that are united through a very hard working and intelligent government. Federalists and Anti federalists are very different breeds of people. Federalists wanted a central government while anti federalists wanted the people to be seperated and governed by their own states or towns. Kirk Martin, Founder of educational foundation Celebrate! Subjective check lists used to diagnosis ADD and ADHD within the school system is frighteningly similar to the checklists used to determining Gifted and Talented children. Family physicians themselves are under a great deal of pressure from teachers and social workers to prescribe medications such as Ritalin for children who are demonstrating bad behavior or having a difficult time of learning. Even though teachers and social workers are trained to notice and help correct issues, they are most likely not educated on how the drug industry works or the appropriate procedure regarding drug therapy. It is an extremely frightening lethal mixture of ignorance and misplaced trust which remains among social workers and teachers. Usually parents who are receiving assistance through the government receive additional funding for children who have been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. Many low socio economic families or single parents often find it very difficult to refuse the added income and additional assistance such as free babysitting if their child is labeled and diagnosed with a disorder. Hearing that your child has ADD or ADHD is common place in today s society. Parents and society as a whole often does not realize that they are labeling them with a mental disorder which is listed in the DSM IV. My Profession Of Counseling Psychology As a child first it was I was going to be a police officer and no one could tell me otherwise, then it was I m going to be second grade teacher but by mid junior high going into high school there were no more changes my mind was set on being a psychologist. It was my eleventh grade that I knew which one specifically I wanted to be, a counseling psychologist and my grandma always telling me that people is my job suit. My value, strengths and interests all rely on building relationships and caring for others and their feelings. As a result, when I fulfill these needs I feel so greatly accomplished and beyond satisfied. Everyone should have values they stand for one hundred percent. My values are relationships, independence, and support. Achievement and recognition fall into my academic values meaning I like to use my best abilities and see results vastly, however, in my profession of counseling psychology you have to work towards something to make progress or see your patient put effort. With that being said, I wouldn t really need recognition I would feel I accomplished my job if we make progress and my patient don t come out as they came. Relationships and support are two big factors I will need to build a relationship with my patient on trust and if they feel my support in order for us to communicate properly. When looking into a practice I plan to look for good working conditions suiting my personal work style and working independently, and security. These values go, hand

That s actually why I didn t like Behind the Formaldehyde Curtain even though it was enlightening me about a pretty interesting topic. The writer chose the give the information step by step, and it was quite boring reading twelve pages of concatenated data along with some quotes. Also the sentence: The hands should be cupped slightly for a more lifelike, relaxed appearance (Brady) made me think about death, in all the cultures, it is showed as if dying is a good thing rather than bad. Why do people try to make dead people look better than they really are?... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Judy Brady also used repetitions in Why I Want a Wife such as: I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean (Brady), to make her ideas more effective, whereas Jessica Mitford used quotes from experts such as: Mr. John H. Eckels, president of the Eckels College of Mortuary Science, thus describes the first part of the embalming procedure: In the hands of a skilled practitioner, this work may be done in a comparatively short time (Mitford) and Jonathan Swift uses facts such as: The number of souls in this kingdom being usually reckoned one million and a half, of these I calculate there may be about two hundred thousand couple whose wives 35 are breeders (Swift). I believe that using repetitions was the most effective one because it helped creating a dramatic punch while giving the message to the audience. It also occurred to me that all three of the novels aroused interest during the time they were written, probably because the writers opposed the common senses on the topic, instead they presented their ideas from a different point of

Essay about Industrial Revolution Led to Labor Unions As America became more industrial more people left their farms and small towns to work in the city so they could pay their expenses, whatever they may be. This led to the minimal pay of workers while the owners became wealthy leading to a functional economy. Most would receive little money while the rest lived a life of luxury. Since more factories were opening children, women, and immigrants could now find jobs, which led to more production which gave more money to the owners of the factories. Americans feared that industrialists were changing freemen into wage slaves. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 was America s first nationwide strike. The strike was a result of a 10 percent pay deduction by four of the largest railroads. Nearly 100,000 workers were idled and approximately two thirds of the railroad mileage across the Unites States was shut down with over 14 states and ten railroads involved (AP Study Notes: Rise of Unions). How do we know how to accept that loss, and go on with our own life as if nothing had happened? As a young girl when I started growing into my teen years. I never once worried about the what if s in life. I was too busy enjoying life with all the new things it had in store for me, as I was becoming a teenager. I felt like nothing could harm me, or the familyI loved. To me my family was invincible. The bad things we would hear about in life like death, or an illness only happened to those around us. Sadly, in contrast to the 29 percent of stay at home mother, my friend Holly Haney, works countless hours every day and has to pay a large sum of her check to student debt. • 18. Analyzing Van Gogh s Wheatfield With Crows In this piece, John Berger discusses the implications of reproducing images and the changes this brings to the meaning and value of the work. As art became readily reproduced, people began to alter paintings, photographs, and other medium s into new pieces with new meanings. These altered forms of art, often provide insight or commentary into context and meaning of the original pieces. One alteration that Berger mentions, is the addition of text to an image, for example Wheatfield with Crows by Van Gogh. Looking at the paintingalone, it appears to be a serene landscape with birds soaring across the skies. Alone, nothing would cause you to question the face value of this piece, however when the words This is the last picture that Van Gogh painted before he killed himself. are printed beneath it, it changes the whole experience of viewing the image. Suddenly you notice that Van Gogh s short, aggressive brushstrokes give this painting a tumultuous almost violent feeling. The pathway that leads through the wheat field has no destination, it goes nowhere. We see that the crows roam the skies in a disorganized fashion, it is as if nothing in this painting has a purpose or a plan, everything simply is in chaos. We might ask why crows? Could those birds (so often associated with death and mortality) flying towards us in the painting, signify Van Gogh s feeling that the crows, and what they represent, were coming for him?

Moreover, IP6K1 generated IP7 inhibits AMPK activity in vitro. Based on these preliminary results, our working hypothesis is that IP6K1 regulates energy metabolism by inhibiting the AMPK PGC1пЃЎ pathway. To test this, we will measure core body temperature; пЃў oxidation and browning in adipose depots of K1 KO mice fed a high fat diet or exposed to cold stress. We will measure пЃў oxidation and mitochondrial respiration in K1 KO adipocytes and in inducible IP6K1 knock down adipocyte cell lines. Furthermore, we will monitor the AMPK stimulator; 5 Aminoimidazole 4 carboxamide ribonucleotide (AICAR) mediated пЃў oxidation and insulin sensitivity in K1 KO mice. Successful completion of this aim will establish IP6K1 as a novel regulator of energy expenditure. Aim 2: Identify functions of IP6K1 in lipolysis. However, a strong noble compass is needed to ensure scientific advancements do not cross moral ethics of life. Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, and the movie Gattaca, directed by Andrew Niccol, propose technologically advanced societies that challenge ethical and moral views. Although Brave New Worldand Gattaca relate in genetic discrimination, they differ in technology s powers and limits, as well as the resiliency of the human spirit. Both works emphasize genetic discrimination as a major part of their society. Brave New World uses technology to create a utopian society free from non conformity. Furthermore, it places individuals into separate levels of social class based on the perceived needs of the World State. These different classes provide a specific purpose. The protagonist, John, lives in the Savage Reservation outside of the World State. The Reservation is a dystopia, as it has a degenerated environment and individuals with no self control. John is relegated to the bottom of the social class due to his genetic identity and living style. If one s different, one s bound to be lonely (Huxley 145). Like John, Vincent in Gattaca also receives prejudice from the utopian society for his genetic composition. He is considered invalid due to his heart condition. Prostitutes typically women are either accepted or shunned depending on the society they live in (Jenkins). At a point in time in Southern India, the Devadasi culture required girls to become prostitutes when they reached their puberty years in order to gather dowry money until it was outlawed in 1988 (Kelly). Despite the potential risks that prostitutionhas, it is still advocated in the twenty first century. In the United States, prostitution is illegal everywhere other than ten counties in Nevada. The most infamous brothel, called The Mustang Ranch, resides in Sparks, Nevada (Nevada s). Prostitution may reduce poverty; however, due to the increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases, abuse against women, and human trafficking, The Mustang Ranch should be shut down and prostitution must be outlawed in those ten counties. The Mustang Ranch first opened its doors in 1951, even though prostitution was not legal in Nevada until about twenty years later. Joe Conforte, The Father of Legalized Prostitution, took over the brothel in 1967 with his wife, Sally Burgess. Although he built a positive image for himself by feeding the hungry and offering free sessions to veterans, he was convicted of tax fraud in 1971, so The Mustang Brothel was seized and sold to the IRS in 1990 (A History). Evans Oppong Dr. Nagle ENG 111 30 August 2017 Effects of Urbanization on the Environment Recent data has shown that the world s total population is doubling; however, the world s urban population is tripling. In the early 1800s, only 2 percent of the world s population lived in urban areas (Urbanization; an environmental force to reckon with). This is a sharp contrast to what we have today. The promise of ample job opportunities, higher wages, and a better standard of living have been the main luring factors for attracting people into cities. Today about 50 percent of the world s population lives in urban areas. It is estimated that by 2050 about 60 70 percent of the world s population will be living in urban areas (Urbanization; an environmental force to reckon with). This growth trend of the urban populace is troubling since it has tremendous bad effects on our environment which in turn has bad effects on our health and well being. Transformation of some parts of the land surface for urban utilizations is a standout amongst the most irreversible human effects on the worldwide biosphere. It accelerates the loss of exceptionally productive farmlands, increases energy demands, affects climate change, and pollutes the land, air and water bodies. These effects of swift urban expansion go far beyond the urban areas to the surrounding remote areas. With the rapid urban expansion, comes the demand for more housing. Women novelists have incorporated the recurring female experiences in their writings and it has affected the cultural and language patterns of Indian literature. It later changed to a style where women wrote about their perceptions and experiences within a domestic household. In the 18th century, there was a decline in woman writing. The reformist movement and women s active participation against the British rule in the 19th century paved way for a rebirth in the women s literature in India. Over the years, the world of feminist ideologies showed influences in the English literature in India. Indian women are conditioned to a blind dependence on men and in a sense the whole purpose of a woman s life is to live for him and not following her own ambitions.
