Research Paper On Vikings
Scandinavians (Vikings) had first settled in southern Scandinavia, but then they started to seek and
explore just as every other nation in history. They had started to divide into separate factions and
were loosely structured, but they still had enough in common to work together and expand. They
stretched from their southern Scandinavia to England, a bunch of really tiny islands, tips of Europes
mainland, Iceland, Greenland, and landed in Newfoundland (which they called Vinland). They had
skirted around other islands and peninsulas similar to Greenland, but didn t settle there. What is
fascinating is the fact that they had landed in North America about 5 centuries before Columbus.
They had used an early version of their most recognized longboats.... Show more content on

The ships were massive and wait for it... long. They were slim, durable, and flexible. This
allowed the ships to steer through fjords, streams, and the ocean. They only thing they lacked (of
which they added later) was a mast and sail. (Only in the 15th century did Europeans create a ship
that surpassed the longboat.) Vikings, known for their raiding and pillage, were driven to these
acts by overpopulation and poverty. A contrasting image of their big and brute reputation, they
were made up of landless sons, social outcasts, and political refugees. Their later divisions spread
even further. Their beginning expeditions were small and mostly unrecognized, but as people
started to recognize them (not collectively) they were dubbed an assortment of names and were
even hired as mercenaries by Byzantian Greeks. They remained mostly in the northern north of the
equator, but they were still expansive people considering. They fell to their expansion, assimilation,

Whereas, other competitors are specialized in production of variety of products, in sports
industry. The competitors provide products such as basketball, football, cross training, outdoor
activities, women s fitness, etc. Whereas Mercury Shoes lacks these areas of products and as a
result lacks customers. Along with its main brands, Mercury Shoes must become specialize in
introducing other brands, too. So that company will enjoy more market share and slowly will
capture the entire sports related industry. Mercury Shoes must introduce special brands for women
s fitness as women spend maximum of their household income for shopping as a result company
will be in a position to earn more profits. Also, the company should introduce brands for all
possible sports equipments which are necessary for athletes. Skilled Labor The quality, skilled and
innovative labor is an important criterion for a successful sports business to compete in the
international market. Though, Mercury Shoes is having skilled labor in its production and
designing team but it is lacking with regular market updates compared to its giant competitors. To
be on a number one position, Mercury Shoes needs very intelligent, skilled, talented and excellent
employees in the organization. And to update them regularly, Mercury Shoes needs to undertake

Justin Apeiros Research Paper
As Justin, Apeiros was a very short and rather weak looking girl. She had very short and brown
hair that she keeps very straight by combing it carefully. This is because she wants her outer
image to not appear as if she is a messy girl but rather a well kept girl who cares about her looks.
She has smooth, pale skin that only has a few glaring spots on it in general. She generally keeps
her body in a very healthy, clean looking state. She makes sure to trim her bangs so they never
get in the way of her eyes or are too noticeable in general. She never wears makeup, as she feels
like it would be pointless to add onto her body. She wants to still appear tough and bruiting while
still never going too far in girlishness or toughness. As the military

Congested Roadways
Background The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes on road
vehicles such as motorcycles, cars, trucks and buses as mobile sources of air pollution (How
Mobile Sources, 2016). Additionally, the EPA has stated that individuals who live in proximity to
major roads appear to have an increased incidence and severity of health problems (How Mobile
Sources, 2016). These statements by the EPA formed the basis of my research regarding
Philadelphia s most congested roadways. In June of 2013, The Inquirer s Emily Babay published an
article titled The 13 Worst Commutes Around Philadelphia . Babay referenced a study published by

In the interest of time, only 4 of the 13 roadwyas listed in The Inquirer s article The 13 Worst
Commutes Around Philadelphia were studied during the course of this experiment. The 3
roadways analyzed in this study were selected because the commutes with the most congestion
were primarily confined within the city limits of Philadelphia. Other routes listed in The
Inquirer s article ran through Philadelphia and branched out to surrounding counties. The
roadways with high levels of congestion included in this study were I 676 from I 95 to I 76, I
76 from I 676 to Belmont Avenue, and I 95 from the Betsy Ross Bridge to I 676. After
identifying 3 roadways with high levels of congestion, 8 living spaces (4 apartments and 4 parks)
less than half a mile from these routes were selected and defined as red locations. Additionally,
eight living spaces (4 apartments and 4 parks) directly located along roadways with normal
congestion were selected as controls and defined as green locations. For the purpose of this
experiment, roadways with normal levels of congestion were defined as any route that was not
included in TRIP s survey of the most congested roadways in Philadelphia. For the purpose of this

Artificial sweeteners can be found in almost all diet sodas according to Food in Sight. Some sodas
that use artificial sweeteners are diet Coke and diet Mountain Dew. Artificial sweeteners are not

`` Peace, And Its Nobleness And Holiness And Honor
June Jordan, a Caribbean American poet and activist, once explained that poetry in and of itself
is a political act, because it involves telling the truth. During World War I, statesmen and
politicians propagated the war efforts, asking the men and boys to join the cause and potentially
sacrifice their lives for their country. Back in England, war was looked at in the most idealistic
light. War was glory. War was honor. War was noble. War was good, and it was right for man to
fight. Early in the war, some poets portrayed that rather romanticized version of war. Rupert
Brooke spoke about the war s cleansing abilities in his poem Peace and its nobleness and holiness
and honor in The Dead. But many poets chose to send another message to... Show more content on

The General s introductory cry of Good morning; good morning! upon meeting his troops
illustrates an amiable and positive view of war (1). Moving along the warfront, one soldier,
Harry, remarks to fellow soldier, Jack, that their general is a cheery old card (5). The
camaraderie, however, is short lived, and these two boys exhibit the human cost of war and of
the general s lack of regard for them, for he did for them both by his plan of attack (7). A week
later, the soldiers [the general] smiled at are most of em dead (3). The succinctness and simplicity
of the poem echoes the ease with which men died in war. So too, Wilfred Owen, renowned war
poet and contemporary and mentee of Siegfried Sassoon, replicates his mentor s view on the
prolific lose of life in war, asking in his poem, Anthem of Doomed Youth, What passing bells for
these who die as cattle? (1).
To dispel the propagated glory and honor associated with death in war, in Exposure, Wilfred Owen
explores death by the elements, a common and less glorious way men died in battle. Owen
famously stated, My subject is War, and the pity of War. One such pity that he depicts in his poetry
is the dismal death of soldiers by the cold and frost rather than the expected magnificent death of
soldiers in man to man combat. In Exposure, Owen utilizes the voice of soldiers dying from the
cold. Our brains ache, in the merciless iced east winds that knive us, the soldiers

English 101 Analysis of Northrop Grumman and Raytheon The purpose of this company analysis
is to discover why one company would be better to invest in over the other. The analysis is based
on two competing companies within the same industry. While these two companies compare in
products and services, they do not relate in overall size. To assist in making an educating decision,
many areas of each company were looked at. A comprehensive financial ratioanalysis was
completed for each company, as well as an evaluation of their strengths, weaknesses and future
opportunities. While it is important to consider how a company manages its finances, it is equally
important to consider its future prospects as well. Below you will find a brief description of each
company, and an evaluation of their performance. All of this information will be concluded with
which company may be the better investment prospect. Raytheon is a company that specializes in
defense, homeland security and other government markets globally. They are also one of the

Conflicts over Religion
How did religious conflicts influence colonization?
Another chief source of conflict was religion. The Protestant Reformation challenged the authority
of the Roman Catholic Church, and Catholics and Protestants struggled for religious, economic, and
political power. Alliances changed when new rulers assumed power; for instance, a country that
was officially Protestant one day could become Catholic the next. Likewise, countries that were
allies one day could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Catholics and Protestants used any means possible to conquer and convert each other, including
laws, taxes, threats, torture, imprisonment, and war. Jews in Europe were typically tolerated but
forced to live in ghettos, isolated from Christian communities. Anyone who dissented from the
established religion had a good reason to leave. To members of a persecuted group who wanted to
live in a community of like minded people, the New World must have been very tempting.
Roanoke: First English Colony in North America
The story of Roanoke, the first English colony in North America, shows some of the ways in which
political, economic, and religious competition affected colonization. In 1585, Queen Elizabeth I of
England agreed to support the Dutch against the Spanish. She gave a charter of land to an English
noble, Sir Walter Raleigh, to establish a colony. This colony would supply the English warships that
would fight the Spanish.
However, the plan failed when colonists discovered the warships could not navigate the Roanoke
harbor s shallow waters. The expedition left more than 100 settlers to establish the colony. England
left these colonists alone for three years while it fought against Spain. When a supply ship finally
arrived, the Roanoke Colony was deserted. To this day, nobody knows what happened to the

Alain De Botton
In his TED talk, A kinder, gentler philosophy of success , Alain de Botton focuses on the
different ways that society views and accepts successes and failures. One model that de Botton
discusses is one where an individual takes their successes and failures to be upon themselves. He
mentions that individuals who take responsibility for their failures, as much as they do their
successes, are more likely to have low self esteem and career anxiety. With this lack of confidence
and added stress, de Botton concludes that it is difficult to find one s kinder, gentler . . . success
because an individual will fear the judgment that will surround their mistakes and the resulting
negative effect on their reputation which are all due to the mistakes that stem from their own
fault. With his argument, de Botton persuades his audience to veer away from believing that one
s mistakes are entirely of their own doing, and he introduces another way of thinking in lieu of it
de Botton states that with an individual s idea of success, one should be aware of their limits and
admit what it s [success] is losing out on. He vies for this kinder, gentler philosophy of success so

Bo Jackson Accomplishments
The famous athlete Bo Jackson is most well known for his share of talents in the MLB and NFL.
Many recognize him due to his more than unique athletic abilities. During his early childhood and
throughout his life, Bo had jaw dropping strength that no one could compare to. He could do
backflips in thigh high water, and could dunk a stick through a basketballhoop like Michael Jordan.
Bo Jackson is no stranger when it comes to strength abilities. Throughout his life he was praised
for having prodigious talents that almost seemed unreal. As a child he would throw crabapples at
screen doors with such a force that they would break through. He could dunk a stick through a

was tackled by Brian Bosworth during an NFL football game that changed his life for ever. His

growth in your hip. Even though he was discouraged, he received a hip replacement and eventually
returned to Pro baseball. Bo endured a lot during this injury and persevered through it by

greatest athletes of all time. An epic hero isn t cocky or boastful. Bo never once saw his talents as
advantages rather than gifts. He broke tons of records, and made a name for himself but never
bragged. He broke records in highschool and had colleges drool over him. He excelled in pro sports
as well. Even though he was widely recognized for being extraordinary he was never put into the

Compare Northern Renaissance Art To The Landscape Art Of...
I am going to compare Northern Renaissance art to the landscape art of the Chinese. Northern
Renaissance worked with realistic detail and focused on symbolic imagery more than on the
replication of nature. Landscape painting was popular in the Northern Renaissance era using
landscape as the subject of art. This is comparable to the landscape paintings of the Chinese. Their
paintings were meant to be read from bottom to top and often had a high point of view. These
paintings were full of ambiguity and indirect meaning. Their landscape paintings featured
mountains in the middle and background with water dominating the foreground. If any figures
were included, they were small and insignificant.

Differences And Similarities Between Vinny And Joe-Boy
Have you ever had a friend who was mean to you and argued with you? Vinny and Joe Boy are
both characters in a story called The Ravine . They are best friends who live in Hawaii and go to a
ravine to cliff jump and swim. There was a boy who died there two weeks and one day before they
arrived. Joe Boy and Vinny are different in many ways and they are similar in some ways.
Vinny is weak because he couldn t stand up to his friends and say no. One example from the text
is, Vinny smashed his lips. He was so weak. Couldn t even say no. But if he d said, I can t go,
my mother won t like it. they would ve laughed him right off the island. No, he had to go. No
choice. Vinny is weak and can t stand up to his friends. In the same way, Vinny is compassionate
because he feels scared for Starlene. On page 7, it says She has no fear, Vinny thought, no fear at
all. Pleasepleaseplease,Starlene. I don t want to see you die. He feels very nervous about Starlene
jumping off the 50 foot ledge. On the other hand, Vinny is worried about Starlene jumping and
getting hurt. The author wrote, Vinny s stomach tingled just watching her. He couldn t imagine
what it must be like to be up there, especially if you were afraid of heights, like he was. Vinny is
scared of heights and can t stand watching Starlene jump.

If this is the case, playing Tomb Raider as a female gamer, mindset it rather hard to hold that
mind set. The developers really focused on accentuating her features that distinguishes a
biological female from a male. Lara s boobs were overly developed, her waist was too thin to
actually support her body and whenever she would jump Lara would sexually moan than create
a noise that was more suited to her actions. There should have been more to Lara than her body.
As their audience changed, their ideas of how Lara needed to be perceived, change. Lara began
to be more than a body. Lara s hot pants have become trousers, her crop top to a vest. Her breasts
have shrunk to a more realistic size... states Archie Bland. Lara was a character with a story.
Over time, her looks were less important and her characterization actually began to shine
through. As the gamers were seeing the changes, many of them were wanting to sympathize as
you saw how rough of an up bringing she had. Tomb Raider s executive producer Ron

Fossil Fuel Power Station
A fossil fuel power station is a type of power station that burns fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas
or petroleum (oil) to produce electricity. Central station fossil fuel power plants are designed on a
large scale for continuous operation. In many countries, such plants provide most of the electrical
energy used.
Fossil fuel power stations have rotating machinery to convert the heat energy of combustioninto
mechanical energy, which then operates an electrical generator. The prime mover may be a steam
turbine, a gas turbine or, in small plants, a reciprocating internal combustionengine. All plants use
the energy extracted from expanding gas steam or combustion gases. A very few MHD generators
have been built which directly convert the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unloading one of these trains takes anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half. Older unloaders
may still use manually operated bottom dump rail cars and a shaker attached to dump the coal.
Generating stations adjacent to a mine may receive coal by conveyor belt or massive diesel
electric drive trucks.
A collier (cargo ship carrying coal) may hold 40,000 long tons of coal and takes several days to
unload. Some colliers carry their own conveying equipment to unload their own bunkers; others
depend on equipment at the plant. Colliers are large, seaworthy, self powered ships. For
transporting coal in calmer waters, such as rivers and lakes, flat bottomed vessels called barges are
often used. Barges are usually unpowered and must be moved by tugboats or towboats.
For start up or auxiliary purposes, the plant may use fuel oil as well. Fuel oil can be delivered to
plants by pipeline, tanker, tank car or truck. Oil is stored in vertical cylindrical steel tanks with
capacities as high as 90,000 barrels (14,000 m3) worth. The heavier no. 5 bunker and no. 6 fuels
are typically steam heated before pumping in cold climates.
Plants fueled by natural gas are usually built adjacent to gas transport pipelines or have dedicated
gas pipelines extended to them.

The Aeneid By Virgil Is An Epic War Poetry
The Aeneid by Virgil is an epic war poetry written in the 19 B.C.E based on the Trojan War. The
poem narrates a story of a Trojan who visited Italy where he came the Romans ancestor. In the
context of the poem, gods have much quoted manipulating; plotting and working against humans
they abhor (Virgil Ferry, n.d.). Despite the god s cunning behaviors, their actions end up putting
destiny back on its proper course. Gods, future, and fate are essential aspects of Greek epic poetry

Juno is the first god to intervene in the Trojan War. When she heard rumors that her favorite city
Carthage was about to be destroyed by the Trojans, she persuades Aeolus god of the wind to put a
storm to destroy Aeneas and his fleet who are on their way to Italy ( The Internet Classics Archive |
The Aeneid by Virgil , 2017). Those who want to proceed on to Italy are about to start the
journey when Venus, fearing that Juno will again cause trouble, asks the sea god Neptune to give
assurance of a safe journey for her son. Neptune does as Venus has requested in exchange for one
human life, which turns out to of Aeneas s ship s pilot, Palinurus, who falls overboard but can
swim to land, only to be killed by thugs.
Fortunately, Neptune god of the sea restrains the storm saving Aeneas and seven of his ships who
then take refuge in Libya an African port. I found that scene similar to Homer s Odyssey where
Poseidon the sea god sends a storm to destroy Odysseus on his way home because he despised him
just like Juno in the Aeneid, another god rescues similar Odysseus. Such scenes demonstrate the
life altering effect that the gods have on the humans even though they lack the supreme power to
change human fate. Gods in the Trojan War manipulate the humans like puppets to fulfill their
purposes and interests.

Mood In The Raven
The Raven is the most famous of Poe s poems, notable for its melodic and dramatic qualities. The
meter of the poem is mostly trochaic octameter, with eight stressed unstressed two syllable feet per
lines. Combined with the predominating ABCBBB end rhyme scheme and the frequent use of
internal rhyme, the trochaic octameter and the refrain of nothing more and nevermore give the
poem a musical lilt when read aloud. Poe also emphasizes the O sound in words such as Lenore
and nevermore in order to underline the melancholy and lonely sound of the poem and to establish
the overall atmosphere. Finally, the repetition of nevermore gives a circular sense to the poem and
contributes to what Poe termed the unity of effect, where each word and line adds to the larger
meaning of the poem.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He thinks occasionally of Lenore but is generally able to control his emotions, although the effort
required to do so tires him and makes his words equally slow and outwardly pacified. However,
over the course of the narrative, the protagonist becomes more and more agitated both in mind and
in action, a progression that he demonstrates through his rationalizations and eventually through his
increasingly exclamation ridden monologue. In every stanza near the end, however, his
exclamations are punctuated by the calm desolation of the sentence Quoth the Raven, Nevermore,
reflecting the despair of his

Aeneas Definition Of Justice Essay
Plato, in the Republic, seeks to define justice while showing how justice is worthwhile and good in
itself. To him, justice is mainly centered around the idea of fulfilling appropriate roles. He
describes what justice is like in both the city and the individual, and appeals to human psychology
through this analogy. In Book IV, Plato completes this analogy by introducing justice
within the
individual. He claims that justice in the city parallels justice in the individual. Justice for the
individual, according to Plato, is about the fulfillment of appropriate roles and the relationships
among them. The question is if Aeneaslived a justly life or was he unjust. The focus I will have

Plato s definition again reuttered says, Justice as an individual is about the fulfillment of
appropriate roles and the relationships among them. Aeneas easily fulfills his role and more.
Aeneas could have given up and not gone through and abandoned his people from the beginning
when he was in sorrow that his people died but again it shows here that he in modern
terminology, sucked it up . In Book I it says, So, ran the speech. Burdened and sick at heart, He
feigned hope in his look, and inwardly contained his anguish. (Aeneid I). This quote showed that
even though Aeneas was saddened by the falling of his people that he had to hold it in and keep
strong to continue to guide and comfort his people in this time of disbelief and discomfort. There
is clear evidence that Aeneas was just in his actions but there are reasons that he could be
considered unjust but the evidence is substantially weaker in comparison to him being

Fah Loan Facts
10 Facts and Myths of FHA Loans
Like many other phenomena, loans guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration have had
their fair share of myths and facts. Some of the most common myths and facts of FHA loans are
briefly discussed below.
1.It is impossible to get FHA insured loans if you don t have good credit MYTH
FHA is the most lenient loan program available. FHA will insure a loan for a borrower with a mid
FICO score of 580 and still be eligible for 3.5% down payment. However, borrowers with credit
scores lower than 500 can still qualify. They must have at least 10% to use as a down payment.
2.Loans insured by FHA are particularly designed for the poor MYTH
The term poor is relative, and the concept that FHA insured loans ... Show more content on

The FHA, however, removed these hurdles for homebuyers who want to buy foreclosed houses.
6.A minimum credit score of 620 is needed to get an FHA insured loan MYTH
This is a pure misconception as the FHA is designed to help borrowers who have passed through a
legit economic hardship and can substantiate the claim. This means that loans are given to
borrowers that have a FICO score that is less than 620 and can afford the small down payments.
7.It is required that you get a Loan Officer to get an FHA insured loan FACT
Most loan officers cannot do business with the Federal Housing Administration. It is therefore
required that you find an accredited agency that is knowledgeable about the underwriting
department at the FHA. This makes the process easier and more effective as such agencies know
how to go about writing the almighty letter of economic hardship that justifies you getting the loan.
The letter determines whether you will be accepted or not as it needs to be written in a certain way.
8.People with bad credit do not get penalized by FHA insured loans

Essay On Scavenger
At the start of this book, it has been twenty years since the world fell apart . For one of the two
main characters, Peyton, the time Before is something she has never experienced only learned
about from stories. Freshly eighteen, she becomes the leader of The Mill, her home. The Mill is
home to a group called the Settlers, which Peyton s father was in charge of before his death.
The other main character is Nixie, a tiny female who belongs to the group called The Scavengers.
The Scavenger, unlike the Settlers, move from place to place and are not afraid to do whatever it
takes to get the supplies they need to survive: lie, steal, kill. Everything is fair game. Nixie has a
special gift, though, which makes her invaluable to her people. She is a dowser, someone who can

Was it a nuclear war? Did the government collapse? There were too many open ends that left for

The Social Issue of Homelessness
Homelessness has always been a major social issue for cities across the nation but in recent years
it is reached astonishing proportions. In this essay I will try to summarize ten recently published
articles and each of the authors view of homelessness. First I will discuss some of their opinions of
the causes of the recent increase of homelessness and who or what is to blame. Next we will look
into just a few of the effects of homelessness, both to the homeless and those around them. After
that we will explore possible solutions that have been tried or proposed.

It is best described by Connie Paige of The Boston Globe where in her article titled
Homelessness hits record high she says, The double whammy of the high cost of fuel and food
can put families at risk for homelessness that otherwise might not be . Those who live from
paycheck to paycheck just didn t have the extra money in their budget to accommodate a price
increase on almost every daily staple they have. Nan Roman of the National Alliance to End
Homelessness said higher food and fuel prices hitting families with no cushion . When these
families can t afford the daily basics, they take from another part of the budget. Those who had no
cushion soon find themselves out of money for their bills and many ultimately end up homeless.
Job loss is another large contributor to the increase in homelessness. I think that James Temple
of SF Gate in his article titled Striving to serve growing homeless population , describes this best
when he said The chronically homeless stand alongside the newly desperate, people whose take
home pay didn t last, who didn t get the hours they d hoped for, who unexpectedly lost homes or
jobs . Massive job losses are changing homeless culture. According to the Ken Homa, Goodwill

Blaising Pascal s Wager Argument
Blaise Pascal was a French scientist, philosophe, and mathematician during the early 1600 s. He
made many contributions to science and math. In 1653, Pascal s conversion to Catholicism made
him more passionate about religious matters. In one of his famous works, PensГ©es (Thoughts), he
talks about a theory on the belief of godusing what is called Pascal s Wager as support. To sum up
the argument, Pascal claims that if we do a cost benefit analysis on whether to believe God or
not, it is more reasonable to get ourselves to believe that god exists, regardless of whether we have
good evidence for that belief. From this, Pascal s argument is unsound and to support this claim,
this paper will explain and evaluate Pascal s Wager argument using the... Show more content on

William K. Clifford was a British philosopher and mathematician in the late 1800 s. In 1877, he
wrote The Ethics of Belief with the main points being it is immoral to form a new belief and
believe in it if there is not enough evidence to support it or believe in something that already
exists but ignoring the logic and reason that goes behind it and consistently believing in
something even though it harms you. These can also be used for Clifford s objections to Pascal
s argument. Clifford uses an example of a ship owner who owns a ship that is in need of repairs.
But he chooses not to do anything because he believes in his ship that has made many voyages
to and back safely. So he begins to sincerely believe that the ship is perfectly fine. Although, there
is evidence that the ship is clearly not safe, the owner still lets passengers on and lets the ship set
sail. This has to do with Pascal s argument because even though you might believe in the
existence of something that might be good in the future, it is not genuine belief. Also, Pascal says
that upon the belief in god you are also granted entrance to heaven while if you do not believe in
the existence of god then you are going to hell. If this were true, Clifford would argue that there is
no sufficient evidence that proves the existence of these places therefore it is

The essential goal of Traditional Chinese medicine is to locate the exact imbalance of harmony
between Yin and Yang, locate the case of the problem and correct the problem. As the natural forces
of the body return to a normal balance the disease is then cured. Ancient interventions such as
Acupuncture, moxa, acupressure are widely used and other methods of diagnosis common in TMC
include pulse pulse diagnosis, observation, case history etc
The acupuncture points and the channels that connect them represent the anatomy of traditional
medicine. The physiology is represented by the organ functions. Acupuncture is a strong component
in China, and can be traced to their health care system for at least 2,500 years. The procedure
involves inserting hair thin steel surgical needles into specific points in the body. . When needles

The Effects of Environmental Factors on the Absorbance of...
Introduction
In this experiment, the gram negative bacterium Escherichia coli is being subjected to various
environmental factors that affect the rate of growth. These factors scrutinized were the different
types of nutrients, the intensity of aeration, or the temperature at which it was stored. The purpose
of this lab is to determine which factor affects the Escherichia coli the greatest. It is known that
these abiotic factors affect the rate of growth the greatest if they remain at the correct conditions for

We took readings every 15 minutes, until the class was over which was at the 90 minute mark.
For the temperature and aeration trials, the test tubes of Escherichia coli with tryptic soy broth
(TSB) were measured using identical procedures as the nutrient trials were tested. Before every
sample, we had to re zero the spectrophotometer with a blank test tube, and then we took the
reading from the cultured tubes. As we did for the nutrient experiments, we also took the readings
from the temperature and aeration samples every 15 minutes. The temperature test tube was
prepared by exposing it to room temperature (25В°C), another test tube in an oven (33В°C), and
the test tube in a lab oven which was slightly warmer, at 37В°C.
In the aeration samples, one flask was stationary and it was exposed to the atmosphere. The second
sample was put in a regular flask, and placed in a shaking water bath. The third sample was placed
in an irregular shaped flask, which was also placed in the quivering water bath. After treatment, all
the samples were measured on the spectrophotometer, using the same procedure as the nutrient
samples and temperature samples.

The results showed that the experimental data did not necessarily display the lowest MGT. For the
nutrient data, the MSG had a mean generation time of an hour, the MSGT had a doubling time of

The Draining Of Glacial Lake Missoula And The Formation...
THE DRAINING OF GLACIAL LAKE MISSOULA AND THE RESULTING GEOLOGICAL
FORMATIONS
RIZZO, Scott
Department of Geology, SUNY Cortland,Cortland, NY 13045
In the 1920 s, geologist J. Harlen Bretz challenged the current concept of how various geological
formations happened. At the time, geologists believed in uniformitarianism, which meant that
geologic change in the past resulted from the same slow, steady processes at work today.
But Bretz presented evidence that there was at least one exception to this rule namely the geologic
formations of the Columbia River Basin and the Channeled Scablands. He proposed that a glacier
caused an ice dam that blocked the Clark Fork River, creating Glacial Lake Missoula. He thought
that the ice dam would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later, he said the source could be a melting glacier somewhere near present day Spokane, but
couldn t say how that much ice could melt so fast. Another geologist, Joseph Pardee, however, had
already identified the source of the flood. It was Glacial Lake Missoula, in addition to a slowly
melting glacier! ВВ
There have been at least five major ice ages in the pass one billion years. The most recent was
called the Pleistocene Ice Age, which began about two million years ago. Interglacial periods
occurred where temperatures increased slightly and the glaciers would melt and retreat. During
the Pinedale glaciation, there were two ice sheets. One of them being the Cordilleran Ice Sheet.
The Cordilleran Ice Sheet was comprised of three main lobes. The Puget Lobe, Okanogan Lobe,
and the Purcell Trench Lobe. The one lobe in Northern Idaho, near present day Lake Pend
Oreille, was the Purcell Trench Lobe. When these sheets of glacial ice moved south they caused
an ice dam to occur. J.T. Pardee states that The evidence of icebergs, together with the apparent
regency of the lake and the variable height of its surface, connect this lake with the glacial
period, and readily lend themselves to the suggestion that its dam was of ice (Pardee, 1910) This
ice dam blocked the Clark Fork River which is near the boundary of Idaho and Montana. The water
from the river was blocked and began to build up and formed Glacial Lake Missoula. Water

The Islamic Civilization And Islam
One cannot have an adequate and well versed discussion about Islamic civilization without first
defining two key terms: Civilization and Islam. Associate Professor at Washington University in St.
Louis, Ahmet Karamustafa, defines civilizations as, nothing more than a particular, even unique
combination of ideas and practice that groups of human actors who are the real agents of human
history affirm as their own and use to define and develop their own sense of presence and agency
in the world (Karamustafa 103). Thus, guided by this definition, we have an understanding of
Islamic Civilization as a religious movement guided by the mandates of God. Of course, anywhere
where there is human organization and interaction, there will be politics involved. Although there
were some political aspects in the community of the Believers under the leadership of the prophet,
at the core of this movement was the belief in his prophetic authority. I will argue that Islam, despite
all the political implications it has had throughout history, is ultimately rooted in religious belief,
submission to God, and living a pious life in accordance with God s commands for achieving
eternal salvation. Furthermore, In the course of this paper, I will give a brief introduction of
Islamic civilization broken up into four parts that are integral to understanding Islamic civilization:
Politics and religion in the early community of the believers, governance after the death of the
prophet,

In this piece of writing we will be analysing adverts published by Guinness. Guinness itself has,
according to one of its adverts, been around since 1759. If this is true then this would make
Guinness one of the oldest drinks around today, except, of course, water. What really matters for us
is that Guinness has been at the forefront of advertising since the 1920s. Guinness adverts have

This again draws the reader s attention to the top and the word Guinness. This is emphasizing the
product name and, in collaboration with the picture, makes sure that the reader cannot forget
what the advert is advertising, as is the case in some more modern adverts. There is a slight pun
in the words Guinness by the sea as it depicts Guinness as a holiday resort instead of a drink. This
lightens the advert up and may make the reader laugh. This is to make the advert stick in readers
memories, as you are more likely to remember something that you laughed at than something that
you found dull and boring. Also the color helps to achieve this by being very bright.
I believe that the target audience of this advert is the young adults because it shows that drinking
Guinness is cool. In this way it appeals to snobbery and the desire to be cool and to keep up with
what is fashionable. It also challenges popular notions of gender by showing women drinking with
the men. In this way it depicts women as equal.
The second advert that we will look at is a T.V commercial from 1996. It is broken up into eight
slides. It shows women at work in what were traditionally considered as men s jobs, like working
down a mine and driving a lorry. It also shows a woman beating a man in an arm wrestle and an
empty maternity ward. This is showing that women

Gender Roles in Narnia
Regarded as one of the most beloved children books of the twentieth century, C. S. Lewis The
Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has found its way into the prolific canon of British literature
and into the hearts of both children and adults alike. Published in 1950, this tale of a frost bitten
wood, fauns, and other fantastic events is masterfully written to appeal to all ages. Set during
World War II in England, four children are sent to live with an old professor in a mansion in the
English countryside. The scenery soon changes as a retreat into a mothball infested wardrobe

Since Father Christmas is a good character whose opinion it to be trusted by the average child, it
appears that the true role for women in Narnia excludes them from battle entirely. Yet, although
this could be construed purely as a negative outlook on women, Lewis makes sure to add a more
clear criticism of men. Very soon after this incident, Mrs. Beaver urges the party to move along
and not dumbly stand there talking . . . just like men (117). It is here that another perspective, a
feminine viewpoint, is added. This proves to establish men as boorish and slothful. This, in addition
to the previous example, is a display on the popular opinion of men during Lewis time: that they are
chauvinistic and hardly helpful. Although the criticisms of men are present within the novel, the
negative treatment of women is much more prevalent. This is most obvious in the depiction of the
traditional roles of women. Much like Father Christmas is a catalyst for commentary on his own
gender, Susan Pevensie, the oldest of the Pevensie daughters, is included in the novel mainly for
an avenue for Lewis opinions of women. In the same passage in which we are introduced to Father
Christmas, Susan is given a little ivory horn (116). Holding no value as an instrument form combat,
the horn is meant for one thing: calling for help. This confirms the stereotype of women solely as

the Field of the Cloth of Gold and the Reformation of the English Church. The sole reason for
these actions is said to be love and seems to be related to the King s obsession for a male heir but
other factors were involved. Paramount among these is the influence of his family in the earlier
years of his life. Other reasons such as general insecurities and competitiveness with other royal
houses are also possible motives. To say that the major endeavours of Henry VIII during his reign
were motivated by his obsession with a male heir is not completely accurate as other, more viable,
explanations are available.

Henry s grandmother, Margaret Beaufort, like her son, had an extreme impact on the young
Henry VIII. She was an influential force at court and dominated her grandchildren s lives in
discipline, religion and education as Wilson investigates in Reformer and Tyrant . There was
little love for Henry in his earlier years as he had not been the heir until his brother died and so
in this way his love for women and sport, which would be reflected in his latter years, grew.
Henry VIII s Family was critical in the descisions made towardsthe major endeavours of his reign
although they had been dead for years.
Henry VIII s love of Anne Boleyn was supposedly the catalyst to the reformation of the English
church. Henry VIII had not loved Anne but seems to have been merely infatuated with her as in
1528 when Anne was overcome with the sweating sickness Henry fled terrified of dying without
an heir. The fact that Anne was beheaded for adultery (which constituted treason) three years after
her initial coronation on 31st May 1533 was also proof that love had not caused this major
endeavour of Henry s time. Henry was obsessed with an heir after his first wife, Catherine of Aragon
, could not produce a male but only several miscarriages, three infants who were either still born
or died immediately after birth, two infants who had died within a few weeks of birth and one girl

Examples Of Compromise Dbq
Compromise Essay To what extent was the United States from 1774 1865 an example of
successful compromise? Compromises are a very important part of American History. The Three
Fifths Compromise of 1787 is one of many. To whom it may concern, America was a huge
example of Compromise. To quote Kenneth C. Davis, We wouldn t be here as a country without
that... Washington D.C as a city wouldn t exist without compromise (Doc. J). The 3 ways
America was successful with Compromise from 1774 1865 were with Amendments, Slavery, and
The Constitution. To begin, Amendments are a form of successful compromise because it s a
group decision. Everyone needs to agree on the choice of correction. If the people who created the
Amendments didn t agree, we wouldn t have them today. This proves they were a success. George
Washington urged congress in his first inaugural address to propose amendments that offered a
reference for the characteristic rights of freemen and a regard for public harmony. (Doc. B) The
harmony in this quote is saying that the public should live in agreement with each other. Thomas
Jefferson, the U.S minister to France at the time, wrote James Madison that he was concerned
about the omission, of a bill of rights ... providing clearly for freedom of religion, freedom of the
press, protection against standing armies, and restrictions against monopolies(Doc. B). This... Show

Gender Orientation And Sexual Orientation
Did you know that gay men and lesbians do not choose their sexual orientation, but rather are born
with it? There has been extensive research proving that sexual orientation is caused by many
biological factors, whereas there is no solid proof that social factors after birth affect sexual
orientation (Swaab, 2007, p. 442). Sexual orientationis already programmed into the brain, with the
influence of sex hormones and genes, before a child is even born. The development of sexual
orientation is caused by sex hormones, genes, and the brain, which then cause differences in the
anatomical body (LeVay, 2011, p.271). Firstly, sex hormones that mainly influence a person s
sexual orientation are the levels of testosterone during critical periods of prenatal development
(LeVay, 2011, p. 132). If androgen insensitivity syndrome occurs in individuals with XY
chromosomes, the gene coding for the androgen receptor is mutated, causing the receptor to
either barely function, or not at all (LeVay, 2011, p. 137). This causes their body to not respond to
testosterone, so they begin to develop physically as a female. From here on, they are usually raised
as girls, and they develop an attraction to males, as well a feminine typical traits.
A condition that can occur in females is called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, which is when
there are above normal amounts of prenatal testosterone and androgens, which causes a female to
grow up with masculinized traits (LeVay, 2011, p. 134). A majority

The Pompeii Exhibition
When I attended the Pompeii exhibition, several antiquities from different sections captured my
attention. The first section allows one to experience how a Pompeii citizen would spend the day
in the city. From the lively and vibrant markets and shops to relaxing Roman baths, this city had
it all. The first object to catch my eye was a water sprout in the shape of a satyr. The water spout
was made of two main components. The first element was a circular disc made of bronze and
attached to it was the satyr. On the border of the disc laid meticulous designs that closely
resembled leaves. As for the satyr, on its head rested a wreath composed of leaves. With high
arched eyebrows, frown lines and tight lips, the satyr is a perfect representation... Show more

Made of terracotta, this statue was easily over six feet tall and it represented a male actor
impersonating a female character. The actor in question was wearing a floor length short
sleeved dress. Even if the dress lacked motifs and intricate designs, the soft creases that ran
along the entire dress brings a feminine touch to the overall image. Another factor adding a
feminine touch was the detailed hair updo. Both of these soft and delicate features contrast
greatly with the face of the character. Unlike the rest of the features, the character s face is
harsh. This had to do with the mask that the actor is wearing. With his eyes and mouth wide
open, he is projecting strong emotions. During that time period, since men were the only ones
allowed to participate in theatrical plays, they were required to wear masks to present a
character. This sculpture expresses the importance of activities and shows how far people were
willing to push boundaries just for the sake of entertainment. I was impressed by this figure as
nowadays play producers look for a certain type of person to play a certain role whereas back in
time, men only had to wear mask to portray a

Karen Seapker Cradle
And Most Slow Have I Been is a current exhibition at Lipscomb University by Karen Seapker.
The gallery features a concise body of work; approximately ten to fifteen pieces in size. Many of
her paintings depict bold, vibrant colors contrasted against dark muted ones. A recurring technique
that Seapker utilizes is creating lines that appear to be executed in one brush stroke. These
compositions are often subtly defined by these dynamic brush strokes. Seapker then creates void
like spaces by filling the remaining negative space with contrasting colors; in comparison to the
brush stroke in the foreground. Another technique used alongside the strong brush strokes is a
simulated gradient effect by applying two or more colors to her canvas and meticulously... Show

Then as I made my way around the gallery I noticed a myriad of her works contained radically
simplified or abstracted figures. Segments of a hand or a pair of legs are incorporated into the
composition delicately like puzzle pieces. Seapker s painting named Cradle demonstrates these
figurative elements. A massive hand like form dominates the center of the composition. The
calligraphic brushstrokes in this form create a powerful sense of movement. Therefore, I found
this painting quite intriguing. In the bottom left portion of Cradle there appears to be two beige
colored legs. To the right of them, a contrasting turquoise, gray pair of legs support the beige pair
in a similar manner that a chair would hold one s body. Most notably, the turquoise legs
disintegrate into a pastel pink field; on the far right. Bits of gray paint are splattered in an upward
motion on top of the pastel pink area; they are barely noticeable but enhance the impression of
movement nonetheless. The ambiguity of the figures allows the viewer to gather a more subjective
perspective on the content. Seapker s visual language suggests something unsettling within the
paintings, but I could not draw any

There are supportive medicines that help with the symptoms by limiting them or reducing them.
There is a vaccine for polio that is very effective for the public. The CDC advises people to take
the vaccine to lower the chances for you to get polio. The goal for polio is that everyone will
eventually have the vaccine and the virus will be exterminated forever. Most people receive a
dose of the vaccine at the ages of 2 months, 4 month,6 18 months, and between 4 to 6 years of
age. The strategy for getting rid of polio is to give everyone the vaccination. How to prevent
polio is to avoid human contact with infected people and to avoid contact with infected food and
water. Before you go to high polio infected areas you go to the doctor and get a dose. Bed rest,
pain control, and good nutrition. The diagnosis is based on patient s history and current
condition. It is possible for polio to be eradicated completely if everyone take the vaccination, so
polio can t spread to people and eventually die out. Some of the side effects of the vaccination if

Explain The Importance Of Working Together When Working...
All practitioners and professionals working with children can complete a common assessment at
any time for a child they work with. CAF was introduced to provide practitioners with children
with an assessment tool that any frontline worker such as someone working in education, health,
children s social care and housing can use. The CAF is specific to England but the same
approach of working together is recommended in all the countries of the United Kingdom. The
aim of the CAF is to ensure assessment is timely and holistic and that children with a range of
needs do not have repeat referrals to and assessments by a number of agencies, which could cause
unacceptable delays to the child s chance of receiving services. CAF is normally completed... Show

Working together in conjunction with other agencies is clearly an important principle of
successful child protection work. Agencies need to share information, work together to protect
children and support families, in order to improve parenting to a safe standard. All practitioners
involved with children have a role. A child s key person could arrange to meet the parents and
the health visitor for example to discuss the extent to which a child is healthy, safe from harm,
learning and developing well, socialising and making positive relationships with others and not
significantly impaired by the effects of poverty. This type of meeting is called Team Around the
Child (TAC). There is a pre assessment checklist for the CAF which early years practitioners can
consult before calling such a meeting. Meetings like this and the process of drawing up a CAF are
voluntary. Early years practitioners should only proceed with the informed consent of parents. By
bringing together information from a health visitor, the early years practitioner and the parent in a
TAC, an assessment of needs can be made in areas such as development of the child, parents and
carers and family

Summary Of The Virgin Of Guadalupe
The Virgin of Guadalupe represented a melding of indigenous and Western cultures, a woman who
was both a symbol of Catholicism, but appeared to an indigenous man and spoke in Nahuatl. The
Virgin stemmed from syncretism of Catholicism with indigenous religions after Catholics realized
that they needed to accept indigenous idols and beliefs if they wanted to spread their religion in
Columbian era Mexico. However, over time, the Virgin of Guadalupe has come to represent not
only religion but something inherently Mexican due her origins are non polarizing, her being
associated with both indigenous and Western culture. Ideologically, she also came to represent the
idea of purity when contrasted with La Malinche, who Mexicans view as a representation of
betrayal. The Virgin s place in the virgin/whore dichotomy is what cements her place in history
not only as a religious symbol but also as a symbol for all of Mexico, something which
represents purity and one s pride in Mexico itself. Mexican Mosaic, quoting Carlos Fuentes,
describes this ironic view of the Virgin s place in a country with the state sponsored religion as
how one may no longer consider himself a Christian, but one cannot truly be considered a Mexican
unless one believes in the Virgin of Guadalupe (Buchenau 23). The Virgin represents an inherent
purity that all Mexicans strive to achieve. Although she is intrinsically Catholic, she appears to be
associated more with the history and culture of Mexico itself.

  • 2. Research Paper On Vikings Scandinavians (Vikings) had first settled in southern Scandinavia, but then they started to seek and explore just as every other nation in history. They had started to divide into separate factions and were loosely structured, but they still had enough in common to work together and expand. They stretched from their southern Scandinavia to England, a bunch of really tiny islands, tips of Europes mainland, Iceland, Greenland, and landed in Newfoundland (which they called Vinland). They had skirted around other islands and peninsulas similar to Greenland, but didn t settle there. What is fascinating is the fact that they had landed in North America about 5 centuries before Columbus. They had used an early version of their most recognized longboats.... They only thing they lacked (of which they added later) was a mast and sail. (Only in the 15th century did Europeans create a ship that surpassed the longboat.) Vikings, known for their raiding and pillage, were driven to these acts by overpopulation and poverty. A contrasting image of their big and brute reputation, they were made up of landless sons, social outcasts, and political refugees. Their later divisions spread even further. Their beginning expeditions were small and mostly unrecognized, but as people started to recognize them (not collectively) they were dubbed an assortment of names and were even hired as mercenaries by Byzantian Greeks. They remained mostly in the northern north of the equator, but they were still expansive people considering. They fell to their expansion, assimilation, and loss of Scandinavian ... • 7. `` Peace, And Its Nobleness And Holiness And Honor June Jordan, a Caribbean American poet and activist, once explained that poetry in and of itself is a political act, because it involves telling the truth. During World War I, statesmen and politicians propagated the war efforts, asking the men and boys to join the cause and potentially sacrifice their lives for their country. Back in England, war was looked at in the most idealistic light. War was glory. War was honor. War was noble. War was good, and it was right for man to fight. Early in the war, some poets portrayed that rather romanticized version of war. Rupert Brooke spoke about the war s cleansing abilities in his poem Peace and its nobleness and holiness and honor in The Dead. But many poets chose to send another message to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The General s introductory cry of Good morning; good morning! upon meeting his troops illustrates an amiable and positive view of war (1). Moving along the warfront, one soldier, Harry, remarks to fellow soldier, Jack, that their general is a cheery old card (5). The camaraderie, however, is short lived, and these two boys exhibit the human cost of war and of the general s lack of regard for them, for he did for them both by his plan of attack (7). A week later, the soldiers [the general] smiled at are most of em dead (3). The succinctness and simplicity of the poem echoes the ease with which men died in war. So too, Wilfred Owen, renowned war poet and contemporary and mentee of Siegfried Sassoon, replicates his mentor s view on the prolific lose of life in war, asking in his poem, Anthem of Doomed Youth, What passing bells for these who die as cattle? (1). To dispel the propagated glory and honor associated with death in war, in Exposure, Wilfred Owen explores death by the elements, a common and less glorious way men died in battle. Owen famously stated, My subject is War, and the pity of War. One such pity that he depicts in his poetry is the dismal death of soldiers by the cold and frost rather than the expected magnificent death of soldiers in man to man combat. Roanoke: First English Colony in North America The story of Roanoke, the first English colony in North America, shows some of the ways in which political, economic, and religious competition affected colonization. In 1585, Queen Elizabeth I of England agreed to support the Dutch against the Spanish. She gave a charter of land to an English noble, Sir Walter Raleigh, to establish a colony. This colony would supply the English warships that would fight the Spanish. However, the plan failed when colonists discovered the warships could not navigate the Roanoke harbor s shallow waters. • 11. Alain De Botton In his TED talk, A kinder, gentler philosophy of success , Alain de Botton focuses on the different ways that society views and accepts successes and failures. One model that de Botton discusses is one where an individual takes their successes and failures to be upon themselves. He mentions that individuals who take responsibility for their failures, as much as they do their successes, are more likely to have low self esteem and career anxiety. With this lack of confidence and added stress, de Botton concludes that it is difficult to find one s kinder, gentler . . . success because an individual will fear the judgment that will surround their mistakes and the resulting negative effect on their reputation which are all due to the mistakes that stem from their own fault. With his argument, de Botton persuades his audience to veer away from believing that one s mistakes are entirely of their own doing, and he introduces another way of thinking in lieu of it de Botton states that with an individual s idea of success, one should be aware of their limits and admit what it s [success] is losing out on. Those who want to proceed on to Italy are about to start the journey when Venus, fearing that Juno will again cause trouble, asks the sea god Neptune to give assurance of a safe journey for her son. Neptune does as Venus has requested in exchange for one human life, which turns out to of Aeneas s ship s pilot, Palinurus, who falls overboard but can swim to land, only to be killed by thugs. Fortunately, Neptune god of the sea restrains the storm saving Aeneas and seven of his ships who then take refuge in Libya an African port. I found that scene similar to Homer s Odyssey where Poseidon the sea god sends a storm to destroy Odysseus on his way home because he despised him just like Juno in the Aeneid, another god rescues similar Odysseus. Such scenes demonstrate the life altering effect that the gods have on the humans even though they lack the supreme power to change human fate. Gods in the Trojan War manipulate the humans like puppets to fulfill their purposes and interests. Aeneas tells how Troy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Mood In The Raven The Raven is the most famous of Poe s poems, notable for its melodic and dramatic qualities. The meter of the poem is mostly trochaic octameter, with eight stressed unstressed two syllable feet per lines. Combined with the predominating ABCBBB end rhyme scheme and the frequent use of internal rhyme, the trochaic octameter and the refrain of nothing more and nevermore give the poem a musical lilt when read aloud. Poe also emphasizes the O sound in words such as Lenore and nevermore in order to underline the melancholy and lonely sound of the poem and to establish the overall atmosphere. Finally, the repetition of nevermore gives a circular sense to the poem and contributes to what Poe termed the unity of effect, where each word and line adds to the larger meaning of the poem.... • 22. Aeneas Definition Of Justice Essay Plato, in the Republic, seeks to define justice while showing how justice is worthwhile and good in itself. To him, justice is mainly centered around the idea of fulfilling appropriate roles. He describes what justice is like in both the city and the individual, and appeals to human psychology through this analogy. In Book IV, Plato completes this analogy by introducing justice within the individual. He claims that justice in the city parallels justice in the individual. Justice for the individual, according to Plato, is about the fulfillment of appropriate roles and the relationships among them. The question is if Aeneaslived a justly life or was he unjust. Clifford was a British philosopher and mathematician in the late 1800 s. In 1877, he wrote The Ethics of Belief with the main points being it is immoral to form a new belief and believe in it if there is not enough evidence to support it or believe in something that already exists but ignoring the logic and reason that goes behind it and consistently believing in something even though it harms you. These can also be used for Clifford s objections to Pascal s argument. Clifford uses an example of a ship owner who owns a ship that is in need of repairs. But he chooses not to do anything because he believes in his ship that has made many voyages to and back safely. So he begins to sincerely believe that the ship is perfectly fine. Although, there is evidence that the ship is clearly not safe, the owner still lets passengers on and lets the ship set sail. This has to do with Pascal s argument because even though you might believe in the existence of something that might be good in the future, it is not genuine belief. Also, Pascal says that upon the belief in god you are also granted entrance to heaven while if you do not believe in the existence of god then you are going to hell. Harlen Bretz challenged the current concept of how various geological formations happened. At the time, geologists believed in uniformitarianism, which meant that geologic change in the past resulted from the same slow, steady processes at work today. ВВ There have been at least five major ice ages in the pass one billion years. The most recent was called the Pleistocene Ice Age, which began about two million years ago. Interglacial periods occurred where temperatures increased slightly and the glaciers would melt and retreat. During the Pinedale glaciation, there were two ice sheets. • 34. The Islamic Civilization And Islam One cannot have an adequate and well versed discussion about Islamic civilization without first defining two key terms: Civilization and Islam. Associate Professor at Washington University in St. Louis, Ahmet Karamustafa, defines civilizations as, nothing more than a particular, even unique combination of ideas and practice that groups of human actors who are the real agents of human history affirm as their own and use to define and develop their own sense of presence and agency in the world (Karamustafa 103). Thus, guided by this definition, we have an understanding of Islamic Civilization as a religious movement guided by the mandates of God. Of course, anywhere where there is human organization and interaction, there will be politics involved. Although there were some political aspects in the community of the Believers under the leadership of the prophet, at the core of this movement was the belief in his prophetic authority. I will argue that Islam, despite all the political implications it has had throughout history, is ultimately rooted in religious belief, submission to God, and living a pious life in accordance with God s commands for achieving eternal salvation. Very soon after this incident, Mrs. Beaver urges the party to move along and not dumbly stand there talking . . . just like men (117). It is here that another perspective, a feminine viewpoint, is added. This proves to establish men as boorish and slothful. This, in addition to the previous example, is a display on the popular opinion of men during Lewis time: that they are chauvinistic and hardly helpful. Although the criticisms of men are present within the novel, the negative treatment of women is much more prevalent. This is most obvious in the depiction of the traditional roles of women. Much like Father Christmas is a catalyst for commentary on his own gender, Susan Pevensie, the oldest of the Pevensie daughters, is included in the novel mainly for an avenue for Lewis opinions of women. In the same passage in which we are introduced to Father Christmas, Susan is given a little ivory horn (116). Holding no value as an instrument form combat, the horn is meant for one thing: calling for help. This confirms the stereotype of women solely as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Exploring the Importance of Traditions in Richard... Any relationship goes two ways to keep our life in balance, and also affect our life whichever of family or culture. As Bernice Weissbourd says: Because it s not only a child is inseparable from the family in which he lives, but that the lives of families are determined by the community in which they live and the cultural tradition from which they come. In Keeper n me, for instance, Garnet Raven who was taken away from his family to a series of white foster homes when he was three. Although his mom revamps the shirt that the sleeves were cut back regular, the long pointed collar was gone and the ribbons ran across the chest and back and down the arms (Wagamese 301). He learns the traditional ways of Native and makes the connection with people, especially his family, and now he changes the way that he used to dressing. Everyone needs family in order to find themselves, no one could be his own person without knowing himself. The surroundings compel Garnet to learn Whites instead of his own culture cause he lost connection and himself. Setting is one aspect of the culture that affect Garnet s identity in social way. The setting of the book is very important in Garnet s character development and personal growth. • 38. Henry VIII Essay The major endeavours of Henry VIII during his reign over England from 1509 to 1547 included the Field of the Cloth of Gold and the Reformation of the English Church. The sole reason for these actions is said to be love and seems to be related to the King s obsession for a male heir but other factors were involved. Paramount among these is the influence of his family in the earlier years of his life. Other reasons such as general insecurities and competitiveness with other royal houses are also possible motives. To say that the major endeavours of Henry VIII during his reign were motivated by his obsession with a male heir is not completely accurate as other, more viable, explanations are available. The influence of Henry VIII s family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Henry s grandmother, Margaret Beaufort, like her son, had an extreme impact on the young Henry VIII. She was an influential force at court and dominated her grandchildren s lives in discipline, religion and education as Wilson investigates in Reformer and Tyrant . There was little love for Henry in his earlier years as he had not been the heir until his brother died and so in this way his love for women and sport, which would be reflected in his latter years, grew. Henry VIII s Family was critical in the descisions made towardsthe major endeavours of his reign although they had been dead for years. Henry VIII s love of Anne Boleyn was supposedly the catalyst to the reformation of the English church. Henry VIII had not loved Anne but seems to have been merely infatuated with her as in 1528 when Anne was overcome with the sweating sickness Henry fled terrified of dying without an heir. The fact that Anne was beheaded for adultery (which constituted treason) three years after her initial coronation on 31st May 1533 was also proof that love had not caused this major endeavour of Henry s time. Henry was obsessed with an heir after his first wife, Catherine of Aragon , could not produce a male but only several miscarriages, three infants who were either still born or died immediately after birth, two infants who had died within a few weeks of birth and one girl . • 39. Examples Of Compromise Dbq Compromise Essay To what extent was the United States from 1774 1865 an example of successful compromise? Compromises are a very important part of American History. The Three Fifths Compromise of 1787 is one of many. To whom it may concern, America was a huge example of Compromise. To quote Kenneth C. Davis, We wouldn t be here as a country without that... Washington D.C as a city wouldn t exist without compromise (Doc. J). The 3 ways America was successful with Compromise from 1774 1865 were with Amendments, Slavery, and The Constitution. To begin, Amendments are a form of successful compromise because it s a group decision. Everyone needs to agree on the choice of correction. If the people who created the Amendments didn t agree, we wouldn t have them today. This proves they were a success. George Washington urged congress in his first inaugural address to propose amendments that offered a reference for the characteristic rights of freemen and a regard for public harmony. (Doc. B) The harmony in this quote is saying that the public should live in agreement with each other. • 40. Gender Orientation And Sexual Orientation Did you know that gay men and lesbians do not choose their sexual orientation, but rather are born with it? There has been extensive research proving that sexual orientation is caused by many biological factors, whereas there is no solid proof that social factors after birth affect sexual orientation (Swaab, 2007, p. 442). Sexual orientationis already programmed into the brain, with the influence of sex hormones and genes, before a child is even born. The development of sexual orientation is caused by sex hormones, genes, and the brain, which then cause differences in the anatomical body (LeVay, 2011, p.271). Firstly, sex hormones that mainly influence a person s sexual orientation are the levels of testosterone during critical periods of prenatal development (LeVay, 2011, p. 132). If androgen insensitivity syndrome occurs in individuals with XY chromosomes, the gene coding for the androgen receptor is mutated, causing the receptor to either barely function, or not at all (LeVay, 2011, p. 137). This causes their body to not respond to testosterone, so they begin to develop physically as a female. From here on, they are usually raised as girls, and they develop an attraction to males, as well a feminine typical traits. A condition that can occur in females is called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, which is when there are above normal amounts of prenatal testosterone and androgens, which causes a female to grow up with masculinized traits (LeVay, 2011, p. 134). A majority ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Pompeii Exhibition When I attended the Pompeii exhibition, several antiquities from different sections captured my attention. The first section allows one to experience how a Pompeii citizen would spend the day in the city. From the lively and vibrant markets and shops to relaxing Roman baths, this city had it all. The first object to catch my eye was a water sprout in the shape of a satyr. The water spout was made of two main components. The first element was a circular disc made of bronze and attached to it was the satyr. On the border of the disc laid meticulous designs that closely resembled leaves. As for the satyr, on its head rested a wreath composed of leaves. With high arched eyebrows, frown lines and tight lips, the satyr is a perfect representation... The actor in question was wearing a floor length short sleeved dress. Even if the dress lacked motifs and intricate designs, the soft creases that ran along the entire dress brings a feminine touch to the overall image. Another factor adding a feminine touch was the detailed hair updo. Both of these soft and delicate features contrast greatly with the face of the character. Unlike the rest of the features, the character s face is harsh. This had to do with the mask that the actor is wearing. With his eyes and mouth wide open, he is projecting strong emotions. During that time period, since men were the only ones allowed to participate in theatrical plays, they were required to wear masks to present a character. This sculpture expresses the importance of activities and shows how far people were willing to push boundaries just for the sake of entertainment. I was impressed by this figure as nowadays play producers look for a certain type of person to play a certain role whereas back in time, men only had to wear mask to portray a ... • 42. Karen Seapker Cradle And Most Slow Have I Been is a current exhibition at Lipscomb University by Karen Seapker. The gallery features a concise body of work; approximately ten to fifteen pieces in size. Many of her paintings depict bold, vibrant colors contrasted against dark muted ones. A recurring technique that Seapker utilizes is creating lines that appear to be executed in one brush stroke. These compositions are often subtly defined by these dynamic brush strokes. Seapker then creates void like spaces by filling the remaining negative space with contrasting colors; in comparison to the brush stroke in the foreground. Another technique used alongside the strong brush strokes is a simulated gradient effect by applying two or more colors to her canvas and meticulously... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then as I made my way around the gallery I noticed a myriad of her works contained radically simplified or abstracted figures. Segments of a hand or a pair of legs are incorporated into the composition delicately like puzzle pieces. Seapker s painting named Cradle demonstrates these figurative elements. A massive hand like form dominates the center of the composition. The calligraphic brushstrokes in this form create a powerful sense of movement. Therefore, I found this painting quite intriguing. In the bottom left portion of Cradle there appears to be two beige colored legs. To the right of them, a contrasting turquoise, gray pair of legs support the beige pair in a similar manner that a chair would hold one s body. Most notably, the turquoise legs disintegrate into a pastel pink field; on the far right. Bits of gray paint are splattered in an upward motion on top of the pastel pink area; they are barely noticeable but enhance the impression of movement nonetheless. The ambiguity of the figures allows the viewer to gather a more subjective perspective on the content. Seapker s visual language suggests something unsettling within the paintings, but I could not draw any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Explain The Importance Of Working Together When Working... All practitioners and professionals working with children can complete a common assessment at any time for a child they work with. CAF was introduced to provide practitioners with children with an assessment tool that any frontline worker such as someone working in education, health, children s social care and housing can use. The CAF is specific to England but the same approach of working together is recommended in all the countries of the United Kingdom. The aim of the CAF is to ensure assessment is timely and holistic and that children with a range of needs do not have repeat referrals to and assessments by a number of agencies, which could cause unacceptable delays to the child s chance of receiving services. Agencies need to share information, work together to protect children and support families, in order to improve parenting to a safe standard. All practitioners involved with children have a role. A child s key person could arrange to meet the parents and the health visitor for example to discuss the extent to which a child is healthy, safe from harm, learning and developing well, socialising and making positive relationships with others and not significantly impaired by the effects of poverty. This type of meeting is called Team Around the Child (TAC). There is a pre assessment checklist for the CAF which early years practitioners can consult before calling such a meeting. Meetings like this and the process of drawing up a CAF are voluntary. Early years practitioners should only proceed with the informed consent of parents. By bringing together information from a health visitor, the early years practitioner and the parent in a TAC, an assessment of needs can be made in areas such as development of the child, parents and carers and family ... • 45. Summary Of The Virgin Of Guadalupe The Virgin of Guadalupe represented a melding of indigenous and Western cultures, a woman who was both a symbol of Catholicism, but appeared to an indigenous man and spoke in Nahuatl. The Virgin stemmed from syncretism of Catholicism with indigenous religions after Catholics realized that they needed to accept indigenous idols and beliefs if they wanted to spread their religion in Columbian era Mexico. However, over time, the Virgin of Guadalupe has come to represent not only religion but something inherently Mexican due her origins are non polarizing, her being associated with both indigenous and Western culture. Ideologically, she also came to represent the idea of purity when contrasted with La Malinche, who Mexicans view as a representation of betrayal. The Virgin s place in the virgin/whore dichotomy is what cements her place in history not only as a religious symbol but also as a symbol for all of Mexico, something which represents purity and one s pride in Mexico itself. Mexican Mosaic, quoting Carlos Fuentes, describes this ironic view of the Virgin s place in a country with the state sponsored religion as how one may no longer consider himself a Christian, but one cannot truly be considered a Mexican unless one believes in the Virgin of Guadalupe (Buchenau 23). The Virgin represents an inherent purity that all Mexicans strive to achieve. Although she is intrinsically Catholic, she appears to be associated more with the history and culture of Mexico itself. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
