Questions On Financial Earnings Management
Prior studies (e.g., Burgstahler and Dichev 1997; Degeorge, Patel and Zeckhauser 1999) identify
three earnings thresholds managers seek to achieve when they report financial statements: avoiding
negative earnings, avoiding earnings declines, and avoiding negative earnings surprises. A large
number of studies use these three earnings thresholds to test earnings managementin various
research settings. This dissertation investigates another potential earnings management threshold,
peer performance, which has been largely ignored in the extant literature.
Both Burgstahler and Dichev (1997) and Degeorge et al. (1999) explain threshold driven earnings
management behavior by referring to the prospect theory (Kahneman and Tversky 1979), which
suggests that for a given increase in wealth, the corresponding increase in value is the greatest
when the increase in wealth moves from negative to positive territory relative to a reference point
(viz., zero earnings, zero change in earnings or zero forecast error). While they do not specifically
explain the formulation of reference points or the usage of other reference points beyond those
extensively investigated three earnings thresholds, they imply the existence of other reference
points (Burgstahler and Dichev 1997), ). and They also suggest that if other reference points are
used either by corporate boards or investors, and if those reference points are reflected in the
executives reward schedulesor compensation contracts, executives

The Issue Of Mainstream Media Bias Essay
The world is not responding to events in this country, but rather to the description of these events
by news organizations. The key to understanding the strange nature of the response is thus to be
found in the practice of journalism.... (Friedman, 2014) This article considers the concepts in
arguing that mainstream media bias exists. Exists and presents, in message and content, an
essentially biased product, in direct opposition of their industry standards declaration of
impartiality and neutrality. In an effort to establish meaning and prepare the reader this article
applies the definition of bias as applied by Grosclose and Milyo, whose paper A Measure of
Media Bias which was published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics in November of 2005 and
is still relevant today; Before proceeding, it is useful to clarify our definition of bias. Most
important, the definition has nothing to do with the honesty or accuracy of the news outlet. Instead,
our notion is more like a taste or preference (Groseclose Milyo, 2005). In the context of a
quantitative content analysis of media bias, its delivery, its targeted audience and ultimate
evaluation will determine the taste and establish preference . Through the intentional and un
intentional portrayal of an established or implied bias the target audience s opinions, ideals and
motivations are necessarily affected. Specifically, the term media in the context of this article refers
to journalistic news sources that are

Kowcs Personal Statement
My name is Erwin Kovacs I am 19 years old and I would like to express my big dream to be
allowed to spend my exchange studies at the University of Southern California during the summer
semester 2017.
First, I would like to write my short bio. I absolved the 8th grade and my A levels at the Sport
realgymnasium Zehnergasse with a GPA of 1.0. My interest in Economics has aroused very
early so I also graduated Economics and since my father established a sole proprietorship, I was
able to gain a deeper insight into business, so it was clear to me that I was going to follow his
pattern. Therefore, I would like to begin with the SBWL E I next semester. Thanks to my excellent
GPA and wide ranging extra curricular activities, I have been part of the WU Top League program

Everest Persuasive Speech
The courage of the daring climber that attemps to conquer Everest exceeds most. He or she seeks to
surmount one of Mother Nature s most menacing obstacles. For many years, thousands of people
have attempted to tame Everest. While a select few climbers make it to the peak, many end up not
making it, sometimes with catastophic results. In my opinion, despite their obvious awareness of
the risks involved, mountaineers should have the freedom to climb Mount Everestif they desire and
shouldn t be blocked off from the mountain.
In Source #1, the third paragraph explains how The human spirit is a questing force, determined to
conquer heights, depths, and remote unknowns. This quote shows how climbing Everest is a part of
the human drive to rise

How The Glasnost Policy To Modernize And Revitalize The...
As George Washington once said, If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we
may be led, like sheep to the slaughter is a concept that is connected to the policy that was
appointed in Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev, the new leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republic launched three policies in 1985, to modernize and revitalize the Soviet Union. The three
policies were Perestroika, a political movement for reformation within the Communist party,
Glasnost, the open discussion of political/social issues, and Demokratizatsia, which enabled them to
make changes by permitting wider access to the government (Cold WarPerestroika and Glasnost).
The Glasnost policy brought enormous changes, politically and socially in the Soviet Union. It
brought openness to the media and reduced the traditional constraints on the flow of government....

Although the policy of Glasnost caused much of the Soviet Union to panic with the openness of
media, it encouraged the people to express their opinion, abetted the introduction of western culture
and increased international affairs, which ultimately proves that Glasnost was the key to Russian
success in the world.
Glasnost was beneficial to the people of Russia and the media because it emboldened them to
express their opinions and recognize the past problems of the Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev
wanted the public to actively participate in the society and create more transparency between the
government and the public. The book Glasnost the Dawn of Freedom by Richard Shifter quotes
that Glasnost permitted the people to attend court hearings and allowed the

Christopher Matthewson Research Paper
Christopher Matthewson also known as Big Six , the Christian gentlemen , Matty , and Gentleman
s Hurler played Major League Baseball and was a right handed pitcher and played seventeen
seasons with the New York Giants. He was voted the most dominant pitcher in the history of
baseball and is ranked in the top ten in many key pitching groups, including wins, shutouts, and
ERA, if taking 19th century pitchers statistics into account. Otherwise Matthewson and Walter
Johnson would hold the distinction of being the only two pitchers placed in the top ten in both
career wins and ERA. In 1936 Christopher got called to be into the Major League BaseballHall Of

After his season with Taunton he went to play with the Norfolk team from the Virginia North
Carolina League. He ended that season with a twenty and two record. He was still playing for
Bucknell during this time period. Around July of that year, the New York Giants bought his
contract form Norfolk for 1,500 dollars. In the middle of July and September 1900 Matthewson
showed in six games for the Giants. He started one of those games and come up with a zero and
three record. He was not happy with the way he played at all, and the giants returned him back
to Norfolk and made him give them there money back form the contract. Later in the same
month the Cincinnati Reds grabbed Mathewson off the Norfolk roster. On December 15, the
Reds gave Matthewson back to the Giants to pick up Amos Rusie. During the offseason for
baseball Mathewson played football for Keystone College from 1895 to 1897. He became pro
and played as fullback for the Pittsburgh Stars, and it was in the very first National Football
League. All of a sudden he disappeared from the team in the middle of the season in 1902. Some
Historians thought the Giants got word that their all star pitchers life was at risk and was risking
his baseball career for the Stars and demanded him to stop playing football, while some others
thought that the Stars coach Willis Richardson, kicked Matthewson out because he felt that way,
since the fullbacks punting skills weren t really used that often, so coach Willis decided to replace

Writing Techniques In Our Secret, By Susan Griffin
As a well known writer, teacher, filmmaker, and much more, Susan Griffin has had a lot of
experience expressing herself through her work. In her essay Our Secret from her book A Chorus
of Stones: The Private Life of War , Griffin covers many topics to help emphasize her points.
Throughout her essay she covers the topics of art, journals, secrets, Heinrich Himmler s Life, war,
development, relationships among others primarily centering around World War II and the
Holocaust. Griffin involves many unconventional writingtechniques. Her narrative flows almost
like poetry, as she incorporates different topics involving missiles, biology, Himmler s life, and her
life itself. Throughout her work, she uses these topics to connect them to her own life, making her
experiences vivid through her writings.
Throughout this essay Griffin uses many different patterns through her many unusual writing
techniques. By using these types of writing techniques, Griffin is conducting her argument. She
compares her life to those of Himmler, Helene, and many others throughout the story. She... Show

Griffin talks about how Himmler was looked down upon by his father she relates this to her
grandfather on her mom s side:
Like Heinrich, he was his mother s favorite. She wanted to keep him in his finery. He was so
beautiful in it, and he was her last child. My great grandmother Sarah had a dreamy artistic nature,
and in his early years my grandfather took after her. But all of this made him seem girlish. And his

Portrayal of Asian Americans
Abstract
My research focused on the coverage of Asian Americans in contemporary mass media. The
following types of media were researched:
В·Music
В·Television
В·Films
В·Magazines
I gave several examples where Asian Americans were used to play very simple characters. These
roles were defined by stereotypes that exist in America. I also researched instances on counter
actions taken by Asian Americans to protest against these negative images. My research also has
examples of Asians that have succeeded in breaking through the racial barriers in the media.
The results show that even though racial stereotyping still exists in various forms of mass media,
there are signs that show noticeable improvement on allowing a more balanced ... Show more

Hollywood typically restricts its portrayals of Asians to a limited range of clichГ©d stock
characters (Restrictive Portrayals [RP], 2004). Examples of the common roles that Asian Americans
play in movies are martial artists, Indian cab drivers, television anchorwomen and prostitutes (RP,
2004). Even if most Americans do not buy into these images because they interact with many Asian
Americans who do not fit the stereotype, the areas of concern are those parts in the United States
where there isn t a sufficient Asian population (Wu, 2002). Since many Asian people do not
surround these Americans on an everyday environment, it is a safe assumption that they will draw
their judgment of Asian Americans from how they are portrayed on film and television.
In many American films, Asian men are portrayed as passive, old, and speak broken English.
The Karate Kid was a popular movie that depicted the Asian actor as such a man. In The Karate
Kid, Pat Morita plays Mr. Miyagi, an old Japanese American World War II veteran who calmly
trains an enthusiastic white teenage male the Japanese martial arts of karate. Despite the fact that
Mr. Miyagi was an American World War II veteran, he was still portrayed speaking English with a
foreign accent. The myth that all Asian men know some form of martial arts was also stressed in
this movie when Mr. Miyagi surprises Daniel (the white male leading actor) with his karate moves

The International Coffee Organization, Free Trade, And...
Did you know that coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world? Second to oil, the
coffee industry employs millions of people to trade, process, grow, and produce coffee (BBC
News). In this paper I will address if the coffee industry is fair to its producers and consumers. I
will also discuss different fiscal organizations that directly affect the coffee industry s prices like the
International Coffee Organization, World Trade Organization
, Free Trade, and Fair Trade. I will also
touch upon of the coffee industry influences farmers, middleman, and consumers.
In 1963, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) was established. The ICO was first made to
assist the economies in Africa and South America. This organization abides by international
agreements made under the supervision of the United Nations. The ICO is the most effective
agreement produced to control the supply of coffee. These agreements contributed a quota system
and price control that benefited both importing and exporting nations. Not only was the ICO fair to
both sides, it also provided a fair price to the consumer which resulted in the rise in consumption
(The Economics of Coffee).
Shockingly, most of the success of the ICO was allocated to the United States. The United States
helped enforce the quota system to help provide a stabilized economy for poor Latin American
countries. Enforcing the agreements also prevented communism in these countries. Once the
United States withdrew from the

Cultural And Culture, Culture And Cultural Awareness Of Italy
Italy Cultural Awareness Culture gets defined as the shared behavior that usually exists within a
given group of people, and is known to have learned and develop with time through socialization
in the families, social groups, and schools. This group of people has to reach an agreement for that
culture to exist. Culture awareness therefore is the understanding that someone has about the
difference between themselves and other groups of people from other countries or even other
backgrounds. It could be differences regarding their behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, norms and their
values. Different people do things in a particular way; they view the world in various manners and
even react to things in a variety of ways (Whittaker, A. 2010 ). Culture awareness in Italyis the focus
of this paper.
Broadly discussed, Italian culture entails, arts, family issues, food, architecture, and music. Although
other ethnicities live in this country, it becomes known that about 96% of Italy is composed of
Italians. The country s official language is Italian, and majority speaks it as their primary language.
The Italian family became viewed as a significant value. Most dwell in extended families rather than
the nuclear family who are only composed of father, mother, and children. The families gather for
multiple occasions throughout the year, and even more for no special occasion at all except to be

McFarlane saw an opportunity. He combined the ball with several others hit by McGwire and
Sammy Sosa to create the McFarlane Collection, which was displayed in every major league

A portion of the proceeds was donated to the Lou Gehrig Foundation. Most significant, McFarlane

Examples Of Irony In The Landlady
Roald Dahl s realistic fiction story The Landlady takes place at a BED AND BREAKFAST in
Bath, London. Billy Weaver is trying to find a place to stay for a bit and he finds a Bed and
Breakfast. He meets the landlady, he finds her kind of strange but doesn t think much of her. By
using irony and personification he creates a lesson about trust it is earned, not given.
Trust can impact the rest of someone s life; whether they are a liar or they always tell the truth,
one little thing can change everything. One example of this is when Billy gets his tea, he
smells a peculiar smell. Dahl writes. Now and again, he caught a whiff of a peculiar smell that
seemed to emanate directly from her person. . . Pickled walnuts? New leather? Or was it the
corridors of a hospital? There is no such thing as pickled walnut tea. What he is smelling is

Compare And Contrast Mary Wollstonecraft And Young Essay
Wollstonecraft and Young Essay It s prominent that women in the time of Mary Wollstonecraft,
(late 1700 s) and Cathy Young, (late 1900 s and modern times), experienced the same prejudices
and misfortunes. In both essays the authors write about women being assumed to be keepers of
the house, and how women don t know what to do in regards to males having more power over
them in life due to the innocence and weakness women attain. Their opinions also differ.
Wollstonecraft says men are holding women back because men don t know how to give women
their freedom. Young says that women need to be feminism advocates and role models in life while
still respecting men. Wollstonecraft and Young have similar views when it comes to women s

e Compromise of 1850 ostensibly was a prudent solution to the issue of slavery in borderline states.
However, it ultimately led to cataclysmic bloodshed and contributed to the United States escalation

compromise can lead to prolonged feelings of acrimony and antipathy among opposing groups and
eventually incur even greater conflict. For example, in D.J. MacHale s Rivers of Zadaa, the
belligerent Batu and Rokador tribes experience resentment towards one another because of a
tenuous treaty between the two. Likewise, in the T.V. series Gundam, conflicts between naturally

Essay How the Elderly Cope with the Death of a Spouse
Ever noticed an elderly couple performing normal daily activities and think to yourself, what
would they do without one another? Many of us have elderly relatives who are either married or
have someone with whom they have a tight bond with, such as a best friend, and we believe they
keep each other alive. We are all born to die, but how we cope with deathis different. When
someone dies, persons affected may feel depressed, sad and even angry. Looking at death from a
different perspective, such as a loved one going to a better place, instead of a loss can cause
relatives to celebrate. This is usually the case when the cause of death is natural. When death of a

Loneliness can be part of the grieving process in such cases where no one can empathize with
you. Loneliness can be prevented by having relatives or friends participate in daily activities
such as dinner, shopping, providing entertainment, and holding conversations. A lonely person
may choose not to eat, bathe and take care of their health because their self worth has
diminished. Correspondingly, a person may avoid going out and isolate themselves. Therefore, it
is so important to have someone to check on a grieving elderly person. Following the death of a
companion, the older adult may suddenly become unhealthy. Elderly widowed people experience
a profound degree of loneliness, which has been found to cause an increase in the level of
medical care, medications and mortality (Howie Mcintyre, 2002). The health of that adult was
most likely maintained by the relationship with the now deceased because they felt they had
something to live for. Also, the deceased person could have been providing financial stability to
help pay for medication and food. Now that those resources are taken away, the health of the older
adult may deteriorate increasing stress levels, which in return can present the onset of many health
issues. In addition, when the score (0 76) of ICG is high 6 months after spousal death, the

Cleopatra and Her Relationship with Roman Caesars
Stacy Schiff is a remarkable writer and a historian. She has a Pulitzer Prize to prove it, and she is
also a guest writer for the New York Times and various newspapers. Her latest work is Cleopatra: A
Life. Schiff tells how Cleopatra was a very remarkable woman. Even after Octavian, Cleopatra was
known as the wicked women in the world.
Schiff tells much about Cleopatra s life involving Mark Antony and Julius Caesar. Schiff ensures us
that Cleopatra had one of the top educations from Alexandria. Caesar did not only stay in Egypt for
Cleopatra s seductress ways, however Caesar wanted to get rein over his enemies. When Caesar
was murdered, by a group of schemers, in the Roman Senate, his adopted great nephew Gaius
Octavius was his only heir. Mark Antony thought he was heir to the Roman Empire but however,
Caesar had different plans.
Janet Suzman tells the story of how Shakespeare wrote the play about Cleopatra and Mark
Antony. Suzman says Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra is a horrific story of a formally
mighty conqueror who is infatuated with the Queen of Egypt. Antony was so obsessed with
Cleopatra and how she led him to his death. (Draycott, 38 44) Suzman said that Cleopatra and

Human Trafficking in the United States
Products from all over the world are being distributed and sold from other countries to people in
the United States. Imports and exports to and from the U.S include products as wide ranged as
food, clothes, and even people. Human trafficking is a worldwide problem, including the United
States. Currently, there are approximately 20.9 million people enslaved throughout the world with
2.5 million located in the United States. About 14,500 17,500 of foreign nationals are trafficked into
the United States every year (Human traffickingstatistics). These statistics show that slaveryis still
alive and flourishing throughout the entire world. When humans are exchanged, exploited, and
forced into prostitution, and involuntary labor, it is called human trafficking. Human trafficking is
a very serious problem which has been going on for centuries; I believe spreading awareness is
imperative to solving this ongoing problem. There has been many government attempts to try to
alleviate this problem in the past with the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth Amendment,
Out of the 20.9 million people that are enslaved in the world, more than 70 percent are female and
half are children (Human trafficking statistics). Approximately 80% of trafficking involves sexual
exploitation and many victims are runaway girls who were sexually abused as children (Human
trafficking statistics). Although the government has tried numerous things to stop human
trafficking, it is still happening.

Chemistry lab report Essay
The goal of the project was to characterize an unknown organic acid in order to make a proper
identification of the acid, while learning proper techniques for scientific measurement and analysis
of error.
In order to ensure the most accurate data, a purification was performed by the process of
recrystallization. To perform the recrystallization the powder was dissolved in a minimal amount of
hot ethanol/H2O solvent that allowed the unknown powder to crystallize properly when cooled.
This process allowed for the removal of soluble impurities when suction filtered. A sample of the
unknown acid was weighed at 8.24 g, and it was found that 164ml of a 40% ethanol, 60% H20
solvent dissolved the 8.24 g of unknown acid when heated. The ... Show more content on

Phenolphthalein was used as an endpoint indicator to determine the molarity of the NaOH solution,
which was found to be approximately .0979 M. The data collected from the titration follows in the
table below.
NaOH Titration
Trial I II III
Mass KHP (g) .403 .402 .411
Final NaOH 21.02mL 41.04mL 30.01mL
Initial NaOH .89mL 21.02mL 9.50mL
Volume NaOH Total 20.13mL 20.02mL 20.60mL
Molarity NaOH .0980 M .0980 M .0977 M
The molarity of each trial was found using the formula below; following the formula is a sample
calculation:
Molarity of NaOH Solution = Mass KHP (g) / [(204.34 g/mole) x (Delivered NaOH (ml)]
.403g /[(204.24g/mole)x(0.02013L)] = .0980 moles/liter
To ensure the best possible data, the error of the collected data was determined. This error was
found to be: (9.80 9.77)/9.77 = .003 x 100% = .31% error.
The equivalent weight of the unknown was determined by titration with NaOH. By discovering
the amount of NaOH required to react with the unknown acid, it was possible to determine the
equivalent weight of 98.4 g/mole. Three samples of the pure unknown acid were weighed at
.403g, .406g, and .394g. Each sample was placed in a flask and dissolved in approximately 40
50mL of the heated solvent used in the recrystallization (40% ethanol/60% H2O). A drop of

and install third party applications. Jailbreaking a iphone can be a relatively simple task to do.
There are two types of jailbreak you can perform on your iPhone, and they are a tethered
jailbreak and an untethered jailbreak. 1) Tethered jailbreak: This method is not recommended,
as it requires you to jailbreak your iPhone by connecting it to your computer every time you
switch off your phone or if the battery dies. Usually, this method is only performed when a new
software update for the iPhone is released and an untethered jailbreak method is unavailable. 2)
Untethered jailbreak: This method involves connecting your iPhone to your computer once and
jailbreaking it. After doing this, your phone remains jailbroken even after it switches off and you
switch it back on again. In other words, the jailbreaking process is permanently done on your
iPhone without needing to be done again if you reboot your phone. Of course if you wish to un
jailbreak your iPhone, it s still possible by resetting via iTunes. So naturally this is the preferred

Lord Byron and the Romantic Period Essay
Lord Byron s works, such as Don Juan and other poems reflect not only the suave and charming
characteristics of the Romantic Period, but they also reveal the nature of Byron s uncommitted
and scandalous life. Byron, like most Romantic era authors, was very unpredictable and
opinionated in all of his writings. From the hatred of his upbringing, to the love of adventure, and
also to the love of meaningless relationships with various women were majorly influenced and
illustrated through all of his works and especially in Don Juan. Yet he still managed to infiltrate his
poems with charm, romance, and heroism. Byron was a perfect fit for the Romantic Period and his
poems and he was therefore known as a great contributor towards the era.... Show more content on

The first generation also wrote about the importance of education, human rights, women rights, and
helped to return the credit of nature back to God. The poets voiced their opinion in a very calm
and collective way that was vastly different than that of the second generation. The second
generation was the group of poets better known for their rebellious and opinionated poems. This
generation shifted from voicing their opinions of the civil rights, and the French Revolution to their
feelings about the Industrial Revolution and the egotistic and prideful mindset of aristocrats, of
whom most of the poets belonged. The author, often, would use the poems they wrote to portray
themselves or a visionary part of themselves, either way the second generation wrote in a more
arrogant and selfish tone. One of the greatest poets that portrayed these mannerisms was George
Gordon, or better known as Lord Byron. The common theme of Byron s poems was that of the
typical romantic heroic actions, and filled with an adulterous attitude ( English Literature: The
Romantic Period ). To understand why Byron wrote in this way you must first understand his
upbringing and the things he learned growing up. Byron, born on January 22, 1788, in Aberdeen

Turtles are critically endangered? Many people are informed about the more popular species that

are becoming extinct like many sea turtles for many reasons like, people will accidentally get their
net caught in the mouth or the body of a Hawksbill Turtle, people all around the world may also eat
their eggs and sell the stunning shell of a full grown turtle. Hawksbill turtles are essential to sustain
wildlife all around the world.
The World Wildlife Organization states that, Hawksbills help maintain the health of coral reefs.
As they remove prey such as sponges from the reef s surface, they provide better access for reef
fish to feed. These turtles help take care of the reefs the fish we eat live in, without them fish
would probably not have access to nearly as much food and would be eaten by prey on the
surface of the reef. Sea life getting stuck in fishing nets has been a problem in the past, so

Video Games Stereotypes
Video Games
Video games first started being introduced into the world around the 1970 s and since then have
evolved and made an impact on the real life and online world. Throughout the years of video games
making more and more of an impact in the entertainment industry, the question to weather they are a
form of media still remains. Media is defined as the main means of mass communication (television,
radio, and newspapers) regarded collectively. And depending where you re coming from media can
include the video gaming industry, film industry, tv industry and of course the news and marketing
industries.
The constant evolvement of the video game industry and internet in general has seen the creation

As video games is such a big medium, they are able to convey messages to the players in a more
low key way, gender representations and stereotyping are both big things that the video gaming
industry can effectively play a big part in. Stereotyping refers to one group s generalised and
widely accepted perception about the personal attributes of members of another group (Ashmore
Boca, 1981; Dates Barlow, 1990). Within most traditional media, gender and racial stereotypes
are the most pervasive two. Increased distorted representation of women and minorities can have
a negative effect on the way that the viewer sees that particular group. The way that video games
are able to influence large masses is another reason to why it is able to be classified as a
legitimate form of media. The definition of media as stated above being, the main means of mass
communication (television, radio, and newspapers) regarded collectively. . Female characters have
changed and evolved throughout the time of video games, the first ever playable female character
in a mainstream game was created in 1986 and then another well known female character was
created by 1996, and that one being the protagonist of Tomb Raider, Lara Croft. By 2014 it is now
able to be chosen by the player in a collective of certain games to weather they play as male or
female. It isn t uncommon to see a female characters in a video game to be over sexualised, much
like mass media in todays age. Female characters are also commonly portrayed as a damsel in
distress , and the male protagonist is usually the one to save her. Mass medias such as the news
and newspapers have this in common with video games, making it out that females usually need
some sort of male hero in their lives. There is a big push for more women to be involved in the
creation of video games

The Issue of Accounting Entity Definition in Regards to...
The UK public sector has been transformed over the past few decades. In an increasingly global
economy, the main lever by which central governments can influence the success of the domestic
economy is by ensuring its public sector operates efficiently. The central governments of the
developed economies have adopted similar change agendas to transform their public sectors. These
change agendas entail the introduction of new structures, new kinds of organizations and a
reinvention of many parts of the public sector. The intention of successive governments has been
the creation of a New Public Sector , which is more strategic and corporate in its thinking. This

Despite of that definition, the creation of an accounting entity is also a political process with
potentially huge implications. Kurunmäki states that the boundaries which describe an
organization as an economic unit separate from other units are not as clear cut, natural or fixed as
the accounting entity assumption implies . To which extent does NOMS now fulfill the above
described requirements? What are the issues involved in the representation of NOMS as an
accounting entity? By defining NOMS as an accounting entity, the financial controls involved seek
to limit accountability to the very institution which is fair to say and in line with the so called
market based New Public Sector reforms (Arnold, 1991). As a consequence, NOMS has to face the
challenge to act within a managerial, instead of an administrative culture. When looking for
example at healthcare reforms throughout Western Europe during the late 1970s and 1980, we find
out that before introducing those reforms and seeing hospitals as accounting entities, several
problems occurred: Poor management followed by arm s length management, with organizational
actions guided by practices rooted in a rationality that privileged professional or clan over
bureaucratic or managerial forms of control (Kurunmäki, 1999). These associated problems could

Anyone that knows me would most likely think I would enjoy poetry. I am a extremely slow

I freak out that on the inside that my grade in this class is going to tank. And poetry is all to blame.
When he hands out the first poem a few days later, the anxiety comes back. First he reads
through it. My hands shake with the paper in them. It gets so bad that I have to lay it down on

Van der Sloot, Deepak Kalpoe, and Satish Kalpoe. In the beginning, the stories of all three men

managing the team ultimately redundant. Each group member contributed towards being team
leader as the group worked cooperatively and cohesively throughout. This issue corresponds to the

Original Recordings Of British American Marchen Essay
One of the earliest recordings of British American Märchen in the Archive of Folk Culture
includes Sam Harmon s rendition of Stiff Dick , a Jack tale parallel to the Brave Little Tailor
included in the Grimm Brother s Household Tales. These stories begin with Jack traveling the
country usually looking for work. He encounters a group of insects, sometimes butterflies, most
often house flies, and kills multiple with a stick or wooden paddle in one swing. The most
common number killed is seven, whereby Jack proceeds to have a belt or belt buckle made to
announce his accomplishment. In the Jack, Stiff Dick versions, the lettering reads, Stiff Dick,
killed seven with one lick! In less suggestive versions, the message reads, Strong man Jack, killed
seven at a whack! After the belt or belt buckle is made, Jack encounters the authority figure of
the region who misunderstands the meaning of the message. The king, wealthy land owner, or
lord of the region offers Jack a task based on his perception that Jack is a fierce fighter. The first
task is to remove a wild boar that has been terrorizing the area, killing livestock and injuring
people. Jack is offered a significant amount of money for the removal of the threat because all
other men of the expanse are frightened. Jack is fearful of the boar himself, and decides to pretend

A Case Study Involving The Telecommunications Industry
Derek Hees
American Military University
ECON600 (Managerial Economics)
8/02/2015
Abstract Each firm that sells a product or service belongs to a certain market structure. In this paper
I will analyze four of the main market structures that are involved in the world economy. Each
market structure is unique to the type of product, the barriers for entering the market, and the
pricing strategy. The final portion of this paper is a case study involving the telecommunications
industry.
Perfect Competition
Perfect competition is the concept that for a given product or service, there are multiple providers
that provide a similar product or service. No one company can truly control the market because
there are multiple competitors creating the same product for the same price (Samuelson Marks,
2012). Price cannot be determined by a single company, the overall supply and demand for a
product determines the price. In perfect competition perfectly elastic demand exists across
competitors. This means that a firm cannot decide to raise prices indiscriminately because their
customers will abandon them for their competitors. This also means that every competing firm in
the market is a price taker. A price taker has such a small role in the supply and demand of a
product that they must accept the price determined by the market. The competitors must sell the
product for relatively the same price. Inversely the consumer must accept the price of the product
because

Challenges Facing the UAE Health Care System
No one can deny that UAE is a young rising society and faces a lot of challenges as other young
societies. Those challenges have a great impact on the country development and prosperity
regarding different aspects. One of these aspects is the health care system. No doubt that these
challenges do not affect UAE alone but it also have an effect on other countries all over the world.
In my paper, I will specify challenges affecting the health care system in the United Arab Emirates.
Let us spot the light on the development of health care system in UAE before discussing
challenges. For example, The mortality rate among infants has decreased from 10.1 to 8.71 per
1000 birth child between 1995 and 2004.1 Some studies show that the leading causes of death
among UAE nationals are cardiovascular diseases, accident and poisoning, tumors respectively.
Therefore, chronic diseases are considered one of challenges that the country faces. Other
challenges include the lack of the human resources and the health care services. Chronic disease
is long term. Generally, it has no cure. This kind of disease exists from long time ago. In the last
few years, it has increased sharply. There are some diseases which spread in the UAE such as
diabetes hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Definitely, it has no cure, but we can reduce it
effects and complications. For instance, the cardiovascular diseases are the main causes of
mortality in the UAE, which are estimated by 21.24%. (Ministry of

US Consumer Culture
While the US consumer culture has many different goods that encapsulate its uniqueness, nothing
quite represents the US than its trash. You are probably asking yourself at this point how a country
s waste can have any importance at all in its consumer culture. Waste is one output every company,
no matter its size, must be concerned with. With the ever present climate problems our society
faces, proper disposal of wasteis a necessity. Luckily for companies in the US, they have found a
way to capitalize through strategic marketing and planned obsolescence. Yet, unfortunately for
consumers, they are often taken advantage of without knowledge of the occurrence. The true
American view on consumerism, where products are bought with a short term... Show more content

There are the manufacturers and corporations whose main concern largely is to profit. there are the
environmentalists who want to preserve the community and promote recycling to help diminish the
landfills. Then there are the consumers: some who buy what is cheap, and often created with
planned obsolescence in mind, some who buy with the environment in mind, but do little research
to ensure it is a wholesome company, and then there are those who to extensive research to make
sure they are hurting the environment as little as possible. Consumers have the opportunity to make
conscious decisions to help our environment, but the reality behind products is well hidden and
needs to be brought to higher attention. Waste epitomizes the American consumer culture to
continuously buy new products, and not think about the harm it is causing the environment.
Recycling has evolved over time into a ploy to make consumers spend more money, and is causing
more harm to the environment by increasing the amount of packaging used over product. The
growing consumerist culture can be attributed to the increased greenwashing scheme. Is it morally
right for companies to increase their waste in order to make more

The Devistating Story of the London Cholera Epidemic...
Steven Johnson s intriguing yet stimulating historical story, The Ghost Map, recaptures the London
cholera epidemic of 1854. He concludes an accurate and engaging story of this outbreak in the
history of epidemiology. Johnson who is known for his blunt and honest opinions about intersection
of science and technology writes a wonderful narrative attacking the flawed proposals of the
scientific community (Pogrebin, 2006).
Ghost Map demonstrates the tragic events that caused devastating destruction to this community
due to this mysterious disease called cholera. Cholera is caused by a bacteria called Vibrio
Cholerae (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). During the London cholera
epidemic, family after family became ill (Johnson, 2006). People developed nausea and vomiting
(Johnson, 2006). Many also had abdominal cramps and diarrhea (Johnson, 2006). Almost all who
were infected were completely dehydrated (Johnson, 2006). The disease spread fast and was even
known to kill (Johnson, 2006). Most of the time, the disease would kill within 12 hours of contact
(Johnson, 2006). Johnson explains that medical authorities were able to identify the disease as
cholera because of outbreaks in Britain that had occurred in the 1830 s and 1840 s (Johnson, 2006).
Johnson mirrors the journey of John Snow, a doctor who became familiar with cholera during his
apprenticeship (Johnson, 2006). John Snow was The Investigator (Johnson, 2006). The book was
titled Ghost Map because

  • 2. Questions On Financial Earnings Management Prior studies (e.g., Burgstahler and Dichev 1997; Degeorge, Patel and Zeckhauser 1999) identify three earnings thresholds managers seek to achieve when they report financial statements: avoiding negative earnings, avoiding earnings declines, and avoiding negative earnings surprises. A large number of studies use these three earnings thresholds to test earnings managementin various research settings. This dissertation investigates another potential earnings management threshold, peer performance, which has been largely ignored in the extant literature. Both Burgstahler and Dichev (1997) and Degeorge et al. (1999) explain threshold driven earnings management behavior by referring to the prospect theory (Kahneman and Tversky 1979), which suggests that for a given increase in wealth, the corresponding increase in value is the greatest when the increase in wealth moves from negative to positive territory relative to a reference point (viz., zero earnings, zero change in earnings or zero forecast error). While they do not specifically explain the formulation of reference points or the usage of other reference points beyond those extensively investigated three earnings thresholds, they imply the existence of other reference points (Burgstahler and Dichev 1997), ). and They also suggest that if other reference points are used either by corporate boards or investors, and if those reference points are reflected in the executives reward schedulesor compensation contracts, executives ... • 3. The Issue Of Mainstream Media Bias Essay The world is not responding to events in this country, but rather to the description of these events by news organizations. The key to understanding the strange nature of the response is thus to be found in the practice of journalism.... (Friedman, 2014) This article considers the concepts in arguing that mainstream media bias exists. Exists and presents, in message and content, an essentially biased product, in direct opposition of their industry standards declaration of impartiality and neutrality. In an effort to establish meaning and prepare the reader this article applies the definition of bias as applied by Grosclose and Milyo, whose paper A Measure of Media Bias which was published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics in November of 2005 and is still relevant today; Before proceeding, it is useful to clarify our definition of bias. Most important, the definition has nothing to do with the honesty or accuracy of the news outlet. Instead, our notion is more like a taste or preference (Groseclose Milyo, 2005). In the context of a quantitative content analysis of media bias, its delivery, its targeted audience and ultimate evaluation will determine the taste and establish preference . Through the intentional and un intentional portrayal of an established or implied bias the target audience s opinions, ideals and motivations are necessarily affected. Specifically, the term media in the context of this article refers to journalistic news sources that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As George Washington once said, If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter is a concept that is connected to the policy that was appointed in Soviet Union. Mikhail Gorbachev, the new leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic launched three policies in 1985, to modernize and revitalize the Soviet Union. The three policies were Perestroika, a political movement for reformation within the Communist party, Glasnost, the open discussion of political/social issues, and Demokratizatsia, which enabled them to make changes by permitting wider access to the government (Cold WarPerestroika and Glasnost). Examples of the common roles that Asian Americans play in movies are martial artists, Indian cab drivers, television anchorwomen and prostitutes (RP, 2004). Even if most Americans do not buy into these images because they interact with many Asian Americans who do not fit the stereotype, the areas of concern are those parts in the United States where there isn t a sufficient Asian population (Wu, 2002). Since many Asian people do not surround these Americans on an everyday environment, it is a safe assumption that they will draw their judgment of Asian Americans from how they are portrayed on film and television. In many American films, Asian men are portrayed as passive, old, and speak broken English. The Karate Kid was a popular movie that depicted the Asian actor as such a man. In The Karate Kid, Pat Morita plays Mr. Miyagi, an old Japanese American World War II veteran who calmly trains an enthusiastic white teenage male the Japanese martial arts of karate. The ICO was first made to assist the economies in Africa and South America. This organization abides by international agreements made under the supervision of the United Nations. The ICO is the most effective agreement produced to control the supply of coffee. These agreements contributed a quota system and price control that benefited both importing and exporting nations. Not only was the ICO fair to both sides, it also provided a fair price to the consumer which resulted in the rise in consumption (The Economics of Coffee). Shockingly, most of the success of the ICO was allocated to the United States. The United States helped enforce the quota system to help provide a stabilized economy for poor Latin American countries. Enforcing the agreements also prevented communism in these countries. • 23. Cleopatra and Her Relationship with Roman Caesars Stacy Schiff is a remarkable writer and a historian. She has a Pulitzer Prize to prove it, and she is also a guest writer for the New York Times and various newspapers. Her latest work is Cleopatra: A Life. Schiff tells how Cleopatra was a very remarkable woman. Even after Octavian, Cleopatra was known as the wicked women in the world. Schiff tells much about Cleopatra s life involving Mark Antony and Julius Caesar. Schiff ensures us that Cleopatra had one of the top educations from Alexandria. Caesar did not only stay in Egypt for Cleopatra s seductress ways, however Caesar wanted to get rein over his enemies. When Caesar was murdered, by a group of schemers, in the Roman Senate, his adopted great nephew Gaius Octavius was his only heir. Mark Antony thought he was heir to the Roman Empire but however, Caesar had different plans. Janet Suzman tells the story of how Shakespeare wrote the play about Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Suzman says Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra is a horrific story of a formally mighty conqueror who is infatuated with the Queen of Egypt. When humans are exchanged, exploited, and forced into prostitution, and involuntary labor, it is called human trafficking. Human trafficking is a very serious problem which has been going on for centuries; I believe spreading awareness is imperative to solving this ongoing problem. There has been many government attempts to try to alleviate this problem in the past with the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth Amendment, Out of the 20.9 million people that are enslaved in the world, more than 70 percent are female and half are children (Human trafficking statistics). Approximately 80% of trafficking involves sexual exploitation and many victims are runaway girls who were sexually abused as children (Human trafficking statistics). Within most traditional media, gender and racial stereotypes are the most pervasive two. Increased distorted representation of women and minorities can have a negative effect on the way that the viewer sees that particular group. To which extent does NOMS now fulfill the above described requirements? What are the issues involved in the representation of NOMS as an accounting entity? By defining NOMS as an accounting entity, the financial controls involved seek to limit accountability to the very institution which is fair to say and in line with the so called market based New Public Sector reforms (Arnold, 1991). As a consequence, NOMS has to face the challenge to act within a managerial, instead of an administrative culture. When looking for example at healthcare reforms throughout Western Europe during the late 1970s and 1980, we find out that before introducing those reforms and seeing hospitals as accounting entities, several problems occurred: Poor management followed by arm s length management, with organizational actions guided by practices rooted in a rationality that privileged professional or clan over bureaucratic or managerial forms of control (KurunmГ¤ki, 1999). A Case Study Involving The Telecommunications Industry Derek Hees American Military University ECON600 (Managerial Economics) 8/02/2015 Abstract Each firm that sells a product or service belongs to a certain market structure. In this paper I will analyze four of the main market structures that are involved in the world economy. Each market structure is unique to the type of product, the barriers for entering the market, and the pricing strategy. The final portion of this paper is a case study involving the telecommunications industry. Perfect Competition Perfect competition is the concept that for a given product or service, there are multiple providers that provide a similar product or service. No one company can truly control the market because there are multiple competitors creating the same product for the same price (Samuelson Marks, 2012). Price cannot be determined by a single company, the overall supply and demand for a product determines the price. In perfect competition perfectly elastic demand exists across competitors. This means that a firm cannot decide to raise prices indiscriminately because their customers will abandon them for their competitors. This also means that every competing firm in the market is a price taker. A price taker has such a small role in the supply and demand of a product that they must accept the price determined by the market. The competitors must sell the product for relatively the same price. Inversely the consumer must accept the price of the product because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You are probably asking yourself at this point how a country s waste can have any importance at all in its consumer culture. Waste is one output every company, no matter its size, must be concerned with. With the ever present climate problems our society faces, proper disposal of wasteis a necessity. • 46. The Devistating Story of the London Cholera Epidemic... Steven Johnson s intriguing yet stimulating historical story, The Ghost Map, recaptures the London cholera epidemic of 1854. He concludes an accurate and engaging story of this outbreak in the history of epidemiology. Johnson who is known for his blunt and honest opinions about intersection of science and technology writes a wonderful narrative attacking the flawed proposals of the scientific community (Pogrebin, 2006). Ghost Map demonstrates the tragic events that caused devastating destruction to this community due to this mysterious disease called cholera. Cholera is caused by a bacteria called Vibrio Cholerae (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). During the London cholera epidemic, family after family became ill (Johnson, 2006). People developed nausea and vomiting (Johnson, 2006). Many also had abdominal cramps and diarrhea (Johnson, 2006). Almost all who were infected were completely dehydrated (Johnson, 2006). The disease spread fast and was even known to kill (Johnson, 2006). Most of the time, the disease would kill within 12 hours of contact (Johnson, 2006). Johnson explains that medical authorities were able to identify the disease as cholera because of outbreaks in Britain that had occurred in the 1830 s and 1840 s (Johnson, 2006). Johnson mirrors the journey of John Snow, a doctor who became familiar with cholera during his apprenticeship (Johnson, 2006). John Snow was The Investigator (Johnson, 2006).
