The aftermath of Hurricane Matthew rivals the damage left by Hurricane Katrina,
the damage costs upwards of $1.5 billion for North Carolina alone. The water has
yet to recede blocking major roadways that are the only means of travel for the
approximately 14,000 UNC Wilmington students to get back on campus. Chancellor
Sartarelli cancelled classes on Monday and Tuesday and later sent another email to
resume classes on Wednesday making students scramble to find a way back.
Samantha Dickerson, a freshman at UNC Wilmington, is from Hillsborough, North
Carolina an area unaffected by the flooding. She made her way back to campus on

Wilmington said they justified their ridiculous actions by saying our teachers would
understand us missing class, but every teacher is different. Some teachers will not
accept any absences no matter the circumstances, this was definitely not an exception,
said Dickerson.
When Dickerson reflected on the whole situation, she said UNC Wilmington put
students in danger and will not own up to it.
The trek back to UNC Wilmington for the students after Hurricane Matthew was a
nightmare. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, the Tar,
Lumber, Cape Fear, and Neuse rivers were still rising and had yet to crest. Students
had to find any route they could to return in time for class on Wednesday, which had
students panicking.
Jessica Goldberg, a freshman at UNC Wilmington, stayed safe in her home in
Charlotte, North Carolina away from the damaging wind rain of Hurricane Matthew.
She did not leave Charlotte until early Wednesday morning because of flooding on
I 74. She was angry that she had to miss class but did not want to risk driving
through the flooding and felt it was best to wait a little longer for it to
