The Dred Scott The United States Army
Dred Scott was of African descent and born in America. He was a slave in 1834. He belonged to
Dr. Emerson, a surgeon for the United States army. Scott and Dr. Emerson were originally located
in Missouri, a slave state. But, in the year 1834, Dr. Emersion took Scott to the Rock Island
Military Post in Illinois, a free state, where he worked for him as a slave. This continued until 1836,
when Dr. Emerson moved with Scott to Fort Snelling located in Upper Louisiana, a territory at the
time (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/supremecourt/antebellum/landmark_dred.html). Later, this territory
would enter the Union as a free state because of the Missouri Compromise (The Dred Scott
Decision 2013). While this was happening, Harriet, the eventual wife of Dred... Show more content

Emerson treated the entire family as his salves (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/supremecourt
/antebellum/landmark_dred.html). Just before the suit was filed, Dr. Emerson sold Dred Scott,
Harriet, and their two children to John F. A. Sandford. Sandford, considering the Scott family
his slaves, laid hands on them and imprisoned them many times (http://www.pbs.org/wnet
/supremecourt/antebellum/landmark_dred.html). These actions would be considered legal if
Harriet, Lizzie, Eliza, and Dred Scott were his slaves. Dred Scott wanted to challenge this. Due
to the Missouri Compromise, Illinois and the territory where Dr. Emerson had taken Dred Scott
and purchased Harriet, were free (Independence Hall Association 2013). Dred Scott sued his
owner, John Sandford, for assaulting himself, and his family. Scott openly admitted he was born
a slave and of African descent, but he also argued that once his owner took him and his family to
a free state and territory to exist in, his family became free from slavery. And since they were
free when Sandford moved them back to Missouri, Scott claimed it was illegal for Sandford to
assault him and his family. Scott also claimed he should be legally considered a citizen by the state.
These are the ideas on which Scott pursued to sue Sandford. His declaration specifically had three
counts: that Sandford assaulted Dred Scott that Sandford had assaulted Harriet,

How Did John Wilks Booth React To Lincoln s Assassination
I will be the first man to ever kill a president. ~ John Wilks Booth. 150 years ago the 16th
president of the United States of America was assassinated. There had been many threats against
Lincoln during his presidency, but at the end of the day John Wilks Booth was the one who was
successful. (O Reilly 77)
There was many people who came into play with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. John Wilks
Booth was Abraham Lincoln s actual assassin. There was many people who helped John Wilks

capture John Wilks Booth. George Atzerodt (conspirator), Lafayette Curry Baker (spy, detective,

The Real Estate Development Of Egypt Essay
We have decided to invest in Cairo, Egypt. Our company named Bassma Real Estate, aimed at
developing a real estate property in the New Cairo settlement. Egypt is a unique country with
great potential. The real estate market in Egypt is like no other in the Middle East or Africa. It
has withstood two revolutions and major political and economic instability. Yet it remains resilient
and has seen tremendous growth over the past few years. Land prices have seen a steady increase
in value at an average of 10% per year since 2010.(Egyptproperty market,2015) Another unique
factor to Egypt is its population growth, growth rate of around 2.0 it is the highest in Africa making
real estatedevelopment not only an opportunity but also a necessity. Our product is luxury
residential apartments aimed at the upper middle class, specifically young couples who are
looking to buy their first home. We offer a unique approach by positioning ourselves as experts
on shepherding first time home buyers comfortably through the process of buying a home they
like and can afford. Like any investment it does not come without risks, but Egypt has some
unique challenges to it. Mainly, its currently weak currency. Although it has begun to stabilize it is
still weak and does not look to becoming stronger in the near future. We hope to take advantage of
the opportunities this endeavor provides us and to establish our brand so as to develop more
properties in Cairoand may even expand beyond that. Egypt s

Essay on Plurality Voting System in Canada
The current plurality voting system in Canada is regularly attacked for unfairly representing the
popular vote and giving some parties a disproportionate amount of legislative power while leaving
others with none. Opponents contend that other electoral systems would be far superior and
provide a better democracy. Proportional representation(PR) is usually cited as the best alternative;
the debate of proportional representation versus plurality often hinges on the balance between
fairness and efficiency. Without attempting the political calculus to determine the rate at which
fairness should be sacrificed for efficiency, this paper will address the very claim that PR is more
fair than the plurality system. The proponents contend that PR is... Show more content on

Canada, and the majority of former British colonies, use the plurality voting system (Blais and
Massicotte, 1997). The plurality, or first past the post, voting system is a system where the candidate
with the most votes, though not necessarily a majority of votes, wins a constituency. This process
is repeated in 308 constituencies across Canada with the party winning the most ridings becoming
the government. This system has substantial benefits: notably that it is clear, easy, and efficient.
The system is well understood and produces a very clear government after the election. Most
importantly, it produces a government that has a strong mandate to govern and one that usually
hold the majority of seats. A majority government can execute its policy without concern that other
parties can stop it by collectively voting against the legislation in the House of Commons. This
allows the government to take action and implement its election promises with the knowledge that
it will have several years of rule before having to answer to the electorate for its actions.
Opponents challenge the system noting that it results in a significant amount of wasted votes
because many voters, often a majority, vote for other candidates during the election but do not
receive the representation of their views by a Member of Parliament. Further, disillusionment is
created from the feeling that there are many ridings where there are safe party seats that one party
or another is going to win

society shape our understanding of ourselves in the show Pretty Little Liars by informing the
public that it should not matter how people see you but how you see yourself and also it should not

Barbie the Teenage Fashion Doll Essay examples
The idea of Barbie came about when a woman named Ruth Handler was watching her daughter
play with dolls. In the 1950 s, girls of all ages only had paper or cardboard dolls to play with and
preferred to play with cut outs of teenagers and adult dolls. So, Ruth Handler thought to make The
Teenage Fashion Dollfor older girls, as a three dimensional doll, called Barbie, named after her
daughter Barbara (Heppermann 2010). However, Mrs. Handler met resistance when she went to
her husband with the idea, and he didn t think her idea would work out. When they travelled to
Germany, she found a doll called Bild Lilli. This doll was a strong minded individual that would

Young girls usually use the dolls to play house or dress up. Sometimes when there is an
accompanying set, there are simple instructions given for example, if the Barbie doll came with the
Glam Fashion Jet, it would be accompanied with instructions of how to use each part of the jet.
Moreover, Barbies are very durable and depending on how well they are maintained, they can
become family heirlooms and be passed on from generation to generation. Often, depending on
the age of the child, the Barbie may be altered either by the cutting of her hair or the changing of
her clothes. Yet, due to the fact that Barbie is a lifestyle toy, children are encouraged to continue
these alterations to promote creative thought. Therefore overall, Barbies can last indefinitely with
proper care or be short lived if they are not well taken care of.
Barbie s popularity spread like wildfire, leading to her being used as a platform to immortalize
popular figures by way of making special editions figures of them. For instance, America s First
Lady in the 60s, Jackie Kennedy was one of the first muses and hence set precedence for future
icons. This also extends to many designers such as Christian Louboutin, Vera Wang, and Alexander
McQueen who have collaborated with Mattel to celebrate Barbie s 50TH anniversary, in 2009
(Parker, 2008). This form of branding provides notoriety for both the inspirational figure and his
work and for the toy as well. This is no small feat for

The Difference Between Colonies And Empires
Present day history has different lineages which often leads to different colonization s and
empires. This may pose the question: what is the difference between colonies and empires.
According to ancient history encyclopedia an empire is the political construct in which a state
dominates over another or a series of state. In true empire method, an emperor is the ruler of said
empire however, history shows that many empires ran without a sole emperor. Colonization is
defined as initiating dominance over a group of indigenous people. Over time history shows the
revolt against both empires and colonization. This paper aims to show the changes that occur
within different countries in regard to the previous reign of empires and colonization. An empire
that is well known through history would be the Inca empire. It is estimated they had roughly
six to twelve million people within their society. The empire was just about 2,400 miles and to
give an idea would start at the border of Ecuador and reach to Colombia. The empire was so well
off it is historically known as the biggest empire of Latin America and indigenous people. The
empire took roughly 200 years to be successful and officially reigned between 1400 and 1533 C.E.
The empire remained successful due to their work on their interrelationships and response to
outside interference. Their main focus was on diplomacy often working out their hardships through
gift exchanges, marital agreements or political alliances. If this

Cold War Era Movie Assignment
Cold War Era Movie Assignment
The movie/TV clips that we watched in class were all made between the years 1954 and 1964.
World War II and The Cold War between The Soviet Union and the United States became the
subject of many TV shows and movies of the time period. The paranoia and fear of communism
and nuclear war was very real in the 1950 s/1960 s and it shaped the cultures of both the United
States and the Soviet Union.
You will be asked questions not only about the clips you will view but how they relate to World
War II and The Cold War. You must use the historical events and facts that we have covered in
class in your answers.
Guiding Question:
What do you think the attitude of Americans was towards Germans and Russians during this period
of time? How did movies and television affect their opinions?
Gojira (Godzilla) 1954 and Them! (1954)
1)What is the Japanese film Gojira trying to warn the world about? What happened in 1945 that
influenced this film?
The Japanese film Gojira was made in the early 1950 s, shortly after WW2 and the 2 atomic
bombs dropped on Japan. The nuclear bombs American forces dropped on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki left a sore spot in Japanese society. It reminded and allowed Japanese citizens to relive
the horrible horrors that occurred after the blast.
2)What do you think the Japanese opinion of nuclear war was in the aftermath of World War II?

Catch 22 Genres
Genres are categorizations of any media based on established similarities in writing style and
conventions. Instead of a strict set of rules, works under genres typically follow a loose set of
guidelines. For example, movies under the horror genre typically employ suspense and mystery to
give viewers a sense of unease and discomfort. One example of a genreis superhero fiction, chosen
mainly because it is one of the most popular genres in movies today. Within this genre, the
protagonist or hero is often a superhuman, a person who wields one or more superpower; the
antagonist or villain also wields superpowers in order to provide conflict to the protagonist. Action
scenes between the hero and the villain or the hero and the villain s grunts are a key part of
superhero fiction. Another example of genres is science fictionwhich is chosen due to its wide
prevalence in literature. Writers of this genre typically speculate on more advanced technology such
as space travel and artificial intelligence wielded by either humans or some other sentient species
introduced by the writers. While this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Genres are fluid: they often respond to changes within the world. For example, Joseph Heller s
satirical novel Catch 22 became popular as it reflected the growing opposition towards the
Vietnam War in the 1960s through its criticism of the military complex (BBC News, 2012).
Because genres are fluid, they frequently change to reflect the shifting expectations of readers or
viewers. The superhero genre, for instance, evolved from simple stories involving the triumph of
good over evil in its beginning to stories incorporating darker and grittier themes today. New
genres also form to meet the developing needs of consumers. For instance, satire developed as a
means to draw attention to faults within society and criticize established groups such as

The Crime Of Uniform Crime
Uniform Crime Report for 2014 states that there are four offenses in the Violent Crime category,
they include Murder, Forcible Rape, Robbery and Aggravated Assault. They only collect their data
from Law Enforcement Agencies from their arrest reports. According to The Uniform Crime
Report, Property Crime includes these four offenses, Burglary, Larceny/ Theft, Motor Vehicle Theft
and Arson. The Uniform CrimeReport reported that there were 402,470 violent crime arrests in
2014 compared to 1,275,315 property crime arrests.
The National Crime Victimization Survey reported that in 2014 there were 5,359,570 victims of
violent crime, and 15,288,470 victims of property crime. The National Crime Victimization Survey
only collects their data of nonfatal, not reported to police and crimes reported to police against
persons 12 or older.
Prevalence of crime is different than victimization because one person could be a victim of an
assault on two different occasions and they would be counted as a victim twice yet only be
considered once for the thought of prevalence. At a rate of about 20 per a thousand people,
individuals had become victims to violent crime in 2014. The prevalence of violent crime in 2014
was around 4 million people victimized at least once, yet there were around 10 million households
that had become a victim of a property crime in 2014.
Crime is spread out fairly equally throughout the United States, the only slight variation would be in

Why Was Persepolis Important To The Persians
The establishment of the magnificent city of Persepolis was of great importance to Persia from
500 BCE to 330 BCE. This city, built by Darius was so important to the Persians because it was
the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid empire, a sacred and symbolic region for the Persians
and also because it was dedicated to hold official audiences. Through an exploration of both
primary and secondary sources, the reason behind why the establishment of Persepolis is of such
importance to the Persians gas becomes much clearer.

Persia. The reasons to its establishment is still consider a mystery but what we do know is that it

Ruled by darius and then xerxes it was considered the ceremonial capital of Persia. The
establishment of this capital further aided the Persians in ceremonies, trade and most importantly
gained respect of other countries in battle. Persepolis was the example of par excellence of the
dynasty. The first reason, which highlighted the importance, was the ceremonies. Celebrations
varied in sizes and all had different reasons. The most important ceremony that was celebrated is
the event Nowruz . Nowruz meaning new day, was the name of the Iranian New Year. This
ceremony created a majestic atmosphere for the Persians. This event celebrated the first day of
spring or Equinox at the beginning of the year in the Persian calendar. Nowruz is about the only
tradition to not resolve around a religious group. The establishment of Persepolis gave the Persians
the opportunity to celebrate as a whole. The second reason that highlighted the importance of the
establishment of Persepolis was the trade. The Achaemenid Empire was rich and luxurious. An
example of trade in Persepolis included darius revolutionising it by placing it on a silver and gold
coinage system and the popular trade items included orange, Shaw and turquoise. By establishing
Persepolis it enhanced trade in the Achaemenid Empire. The final reason that highlights the
importance of the establishment of Persepolis was their success in battle. Darius and xerxes were
highly successful in battle and there are still structures that depict the sister countries giving the
kings gifts. Some of these included lions from the elamites, brahma bull from the Babylonians and
even cloth from the Lydian bolts. Alexander involved Persepolis as a whole in the battle of the
Persian gate, which they weren t successful in which led to its destruction. Even due to this fact the

is the multinational firm? It should be called multinational corporation (MNCs) which is more
academic. An MNC is a company physically active in more than one country, like McDonald,
Nestle, Ford etc.
General speaking, Human Resource Management plays an essential role for an enterprise,
especially for a multinational enterprise. What is Human Resource Management? Noe et al. (2006:
5) defined HRM that HRM refers to the policies, practices and systems that influence employee
behavior, attitudes and performance in order to support business goals and objectives while Dowling

Therefore, in general, the majority of employees are HCNs while the senior managers are PCNs
and TCNs in the earlier operation of a subsidiary. In the process of local development of
subsidiaries, the system of operation become mature and HCNs become more familiar for
companies policies, methods, technology and management etc. so it is necessary and brilliant to
expand the space of promotions for HCNs in the late operation. That is to say, increasing the
proportion of HCNs in the senior managers in the late operation can bring lots of benefits for
company. For example, it will cut down the cost efficiently and motivate the local staff to work
harder significantly.
The second HR activity is about compensation and benefits. Firstly, this HR activity for
multinational firms involves different currencies and stability of currencies. With the fluctuation of
exchange rates, a foreign currency may appreciate or depreciate, which bring more risk for
multinational firms. Also, with the diversity of nations and cultures, the institution of compensation
may vary from parent company to subsidiary. For example, different countries have different price
levels, which lead to different wage levels. Lastly, according to three categories of employees, the
compensation and benefits are different. Compensation is a key factor to increase satisfaction of
staff and job performance. The main problem about compensation and

Outbreaks of cholera were not isolated to the European and Asian continents, as several major
cases within the United States have been recorded back to colonial times. As trade increased with

The Duality Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde And Shakespeare s...
To look at the duality of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Macbeth
In this essay, I am going to analyse the concept of duality in Robert Louis Stevenson s Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde and Shakespeare s Macbeth.
The meaning of duality is the quality or condition of having two sides to something, such as good
and evil, love and hate and black and white. The novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Centre s around
duality . The author R.L.S (Robert Louis Stevenson) introduces us to the two sides of a person, Dr.
Jekyll, an established gentleman , with the respect of the wise and good in society. Whilst Dr.
Jekyll lives a virtuous life, he also has sins and desires that he keeps hidden. Within him, the
good and the evil sides of his personality are fighting. The author uses the language of battle,
writing that there is war inside of Dr. Jekyll and illustrates the struggle between the two sides as
two forces meeting on a battlefield . Dr. Jekyll feels that he is leading a double life and believes
that this duality can be found in all humans: man is not truly one, but truly two .
The character Mr. Utterson is an additional example of duality. He is described as dusty and dreary
, whilst also being lovable and friendly ; again, we are shown two different sides to one person.
In the novella even property is talked about as being two sided. On one side of the street, the
properties are described in a positive manner, freshly painted shutters and well polished brasses ,

1000 Class Reflection
Business Recitation 1000 class has been such a great experience and expanded my knowledge
with the excel program while also incorporating the use of excel to create the PowerPoint in
class helped me to know the program better. This learning experience will definitely advance my
knowledge in excel as well as assist me to prepare for the corporate world where these skills are
used in day to day basis. Professor Williamson, you mentioned in the content section restating that
this class went through some major reconstruction from being a communication based where
students were required to do a presentation about the choice of their company for 30 minutes and
writing a 15 page term paper to mostly excel based class now. I believe that these changes were
needed and it really helped me expand my familiarity with excel to knowing exactly how to work
with the program including profit and expense analysis, Income statement, bar chart, line chart,...

Additionally, I became comfortable with excel because I did hesitate and struggled with it in
the beginning but all the materials and instruction improved my performance and some
practicing as well. Fusing excel with PowerPoint was a much simpler task than collecting data
and making graphs in excel. After all the critical work in excel, copy and pasting was one way to
transfer the information which I used for presentation. My group and I chose Microsoft as a
company of our choice and collected all the data needed from the online sources. After
enumerating the information in excel, my group members and I transferred the graphs and charts
by simply copy pasting. I believe that it was definitely an excellent idea for creating a presentation
because we were able to practice and put our skills learned in class to test.

Ethanol, an alcohol, is the product of the fermentation of a biomass resources or sugar rich crops

Ethanol in Engines
Ethanol at the moment is present as a blended fuel with petrol. As it is blended with petrol, this
increases efficiency for the ethanol but decreases the petrol s very own efficiency. Although
ethanol is a better fuel to run through an engine avoid or alleviate knocking and pre ignition.
Although the efficiency of petrol may be brought down, by having the ethanol, this increases the
overall octane number of petrol thus allowing for a greater compression. So what is the
importance of the compression ratio in a car? Recently, cars such the Mazda 3 with the SkyActiv
engine can get as far as 17.9 kilometres on one litre of fuel due to the engines high compression
ratio. The compression ratio is the volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at the
bottom, and the volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at the top (Deaton, 2011).
Ethanol has a compression ratio of 14.5 16.1:1 whereas petrol has a ratio of 10:1 or lower as a
higher compression could potentially lead to knocking in petrol engines. By having the ethanol
blend with petrol, this then allows for increased fuel efficiency for ethanol but decreased efficiency
for petrol.
The energy that comes from the combustion from either ethanol or petrol comes from burning these
hydrocarbons in order for the oxygen from the air to combine and combust (See Ethanol and the
Environment for more). Energy is produced when the hydrocarbon bonds between the carbon and
the hydrogen and

Aspects Of Body Image
Body image is the perception that a person has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings
that result from that perception. These feelings can be positive, negative or both and are influenced
by individual and environmental factors. Many modern celebrities are known for being excessive
sharers on social media.
For instance, the Kardashians are notorious for posting daily glamorous and often lingerie clad
images on Instagram that attract several million likes. But it s not just images of attractive
celebrities that flood social media. Friends, acquaintances and strangers post images of
themselves too, often editing them to disguise face blemishes, make cheeks rosier or to make
their nose look smaller. When people look at these attractive images on social media, research
shows they often compare their own appearance to those images and think they re less attractive
than the images they see.We know these comparisons can make women unhappy with their
appearance and put them in a bad mood. Given body dissatisfaction is an important predictor for
eating disorders, we need to know if some types of comparisons are worse for people s body image
than others. ( Instagram Feeds Do More Damage to Body Image Than Billboards: Study )

Irgages And Disadvantages Of Alternative Dispute Resolution
1)Alternative Dispute resolution or ADR refers to any sort of action that is utilize instead of a court
of action. The following are advantages to alternative dispute resolution.
One of this advantages is that it allows both parties to obtain some sort of gain because in a court
of action only party would be the beneficiary. Another benefit is that the process would not be as
bureaucratic as it would be on court of action where representatives of the company would also
focus on the case and not in the activities of the company. ADR also provides the ability for the
company to not get negative attention as matters can be keep private. Lawyer and administrative
cost would be greatly reduce because not many lawyers would be need it for negotiations.
Furthermore, Alternative Dispute resolution are often use by companies operating in international
markets.
2)Negotiation, refers to the process of having the two sides come to an agreement without the help
of an externality. This could be beneficial to both parties because they can come to an agreement of
their own terms and both side win. Mediation is when a neutral authority brings both sides to the
table to help solve the dispute. Benefits to doing this process, is that the mediator can provide
alternatives to how to solve the dispute, although results are nonbinding. Arbitration is when a third
party decides the outcome of a dispute. For the winning party is an advantage because the decision

The Elements Of The Adversarial Trial System
Adversarial Trial System
Australian courts use the adversary system of trial when resolving disputes. It is a system based on
the notion of two adversaries battling in an arena before an impartial third party, with the emphasis
on winning.
Elements of the adversarial system
The role of the judge
The role of the parties
The role of legal Representation
Burden and standard of proof
Rules of evidence and procedure
Role of the judge
Acts as an umpire. Is independent and impartial.
Make sure both parties follow the rules of evidence and procedure.
Deem whether or not the evidence is admissible or inadmissible.
Ensures both parties have equal time to present their cases.
Responsible for instructing the jury regarding the application of law.
Determines verdict and hands down sanctions if there is no jury.
They have a passive role. They have legal knowledge and expertise but they are there to fairly
oversee and adjudicate the trial.
Role of the parties
Parties have complete control over the preparation/presentation of their case.
Parties decide which arguments they will present , which points of law should be considered and
which witnesses to call.
In criminal law, the initiating party is the prosecution. The accused has an opportunity to plead
guilty or not and then present their account.
In civil law, initiation party is the plaintiff and they can choose which court will hear their case and
if there is a jury.
Parties have an active role in the system.

Essay on Voodoo Speech
What Will Be Covered
Today, I m going to be talking about the roots of voodoo and what it actually is, the two types of
voodoo, voodoo rituals and superstitions, and why voodoo is perceived as a negative or
controversial topic.
What Is Voodoo?
I m sure everyone has their own perception of voodoo inside their head. Most people think
includes black magic, evil spirits, and causing harm to others. However, voodoo is actually a
complex tradition of faiths and beliefs that combine into an overall world full of religion and magic.
It is believed to have started sometime around 1724 in Africa, Haiti specifically. Today, there are
still people in parts of the United States that believe in voodoo and practice it. Voodoo embraces the

New Orlean Voodoo Rituals
New Orleans voodoo rituals differ from those of Haitian voodoo because of their emphasis on
voodoo queens, gris gris, superstitions and spells. Voodoo queens were central figures to voodoo
in the United States. They looked over ceremonial meetings and ritual dance while also obtaining
income by making charms, amulets and magical powders that were guaranteed to have special
healing powers. The most legendary voodoo queen was Marie Laveau because of her special
powers and ability to do exorcisms. She quickly overthrew the other voodoo queens of New
Orleans. Gris Gris is a voodoo amulet which is believed to protect whomever wears it from evil
and will provide them with good luck. New Orleans voodoo is also known for their superstitions,
however, they aren t central to the actual faith. These superstitions are just resulted from ancient
Louisana voodoo tradition and have influenced the faith.
Why is Voodoo shown in a Negative Light?
I m sure before I talked about voodoo, you expected something totally different. I, myself,
thought voodoo was actually all about black magic and evil spirits. However, voodoo is not
actually negative. When the early Haitian slaves came over to different parts of the world, they
also brought over their faith. However, because they were black and their religion was not
recognized, it was prejudged as evil. The priests were known as witchdoctors, the Loa were thought
to be evil when in reality, the

Passion can be a great destructive agent if it is stronger than reason. In Medea, it ends up being

And since they were free when Sandford moved them back to Missouri, Scott claimed it was illegal for Sandford to assault him and his family. Scott also claimed he should be legally considered a citizen by the state. These are the ideas on which Scott pursued to sue Sandford. Essay on Plurality Voting System in Canada The current plurality voting system in Canada is regularly attacked for unfairly representing the popular vote and giving some parties a disproportionate amount of legislative power while leaving others with none. Opponents contend that other electoral systems would be far superior and provide a better democracy. Proportional representation(PR) is usually cited as the best alternative; the debate of proportional representation versus plurality often hinges on the balance between fairness and efficiency. Without attempting the political calculus to determine the rate at which fairness should be sacrificed for efficiency, this paper will address the very claim that PR is more fair than the plurality system. The plurality, or first past the post, voting system is a system where the candidate with the most votes, though not necessarily a majority of votes, wins a constituency. This process is repeated in 308 constituencies across Canada with the party winning the most ridings becoming the government. This system has substantial benefits: notably that it is clear, easy, and efficient. The system is well understood and produces a very clear government after the election. Most importantly, it produces a government that has a strong mandate to govern and one that usually hold the majority of seats. A majority government can execute its policy without concern that other parties can stop it by collectively voting against the legislation in the House of Commons. This allows the government to take action and implement its election promises with the knowledge that it will have several years of rule before having to answer to the electorate for its actions. Opponents challenge the system noting that it results in a significant amount of wasted votes because many voters, often a majority, vote for other candidates during the election but do not receive the representation of their views by a Member of Parliament. Further, disillusionment is created from the feeling that there are many ridings where there are safe party seats that one party or another is going to win ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One example of a genreis superhero fiction, chosen mainly because it is one of the most popular genres in movies today. Within this genre, the protagonist or hero is often a superhuman, a person who wields one or more superpower; the antagonist or villain also wields superpowers in order to provide conflict to the protagonist. Whilst Dr. Jekyll lives a virtuous life, he also has sins and desires that he keeps hidden. Within him, the good and the evil sides of his personality are fighting. The author uses the language of battle, writing that there is war inside of Dr. Jekyll and illustrates the struggle between the two sides as two forces meeting on a battlefield . Dr. Jekyll feels that he is leading a double life and believes that this duality can be found in all humans: man is not truly one, but truly two . The character Mr. Utterson is an additional example of duality. He is described as dusty and dreary , whilst also being lovable and friendly ; again, we are shown two different sides to one person. Ethanol in Engines Ethanol at the moment is present as a blended fuel with petrol. As it is blended with petrol, this increases efficiency for the ethanol but decreases the petrol s very own efficiency. Although ethanol is a better fuel to run through an engine avoid or alleviate knocking and pre ignition. Although the efficiency of petrol may be brought down, by having the ethanol, this increases the overall octane number of petrol thus allowing for a greater compression. So what is the importance of the compression ratio in a car? Recently, cars such the Mazda 3 with the SkyActiv engine can get as far as 17.9 kilometres on one litre of fuel due to the engines high compression ratio. The compression ratio is the volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at the bottom, and the volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at the top (Deaton, 2011). Ethanol has a compression ratio of 14.5 16.1:1 whereas petrol has a ratio of 10:1 or lower as a higher compression could potentially lead to knocking in petrol engines. By having the ethanol blend with petrol, this then allows for increased fuel efficiency for ethanol but decreased efficiency for petrol. The energy that comes from the combustion from either ethanol or petrol comes from burning these hydrocarbons in order for the oxygen from the air to combine and combust (See Ethanol and the Environment for more).
