Comparing Apple iOS and Google Operating Systems
Android vs. iOS: Feature Comparison Introduction The intent of this analysis is to define the
differences between the Apple iOS and Google Android operating systems, in addition to
discussing the newest features for each. The Pros and Cons of each operating system are
discussed, in addition to a chart of relative market share on smartphone and tablet PCs. In addition
to relative market share, the number of application downloads will also be shown. Analysis Of
Differences Between Android And Apple iOS Mobile Operating Systems The most significant
differences between these mobile operating systems is the design philosophy of each, with Apple
choosing a closed architecture, and Google with Android, open. This design philosophy is the
catalyst of differences between Android and iOS operating systems. The next most significant
difference is Android being based on the popular open source kernel Linux while Apple built iOS
on OS X operating system (Manikas, Hansen, 1294). Additional differences include Android
offering the kernel, user interface and standard baseline applications all as open source,
configurable by developers. Another difference is the level of configurability and customization
that is supported on Android relative to iOS as exemplified by the open Application Programmer
Interface (API) structure that Google has constructed for Android (Puliyenthuruthel, et. al.). The
decision by Google to make Android an open architecture based mobile operating system has

Critically Appraise A Popular Leadership Theory
Leadership is a concept that is constantly discussed yet there is seldom agreement about what it
is. Even though most agree leadership is crucial to success of any people, project or venture.
People define leadership differently and often times misconstrue leadership with management.
Leadership provides the vision and focuses on the people while management focuses on objectives
and tasks. It is however valid that a budding leader may sometimes need to act as both a leader an
as a manager whenever necessary.
Over the years, in an attempt to define leadership and reach a consensus on what it is, various
leadership theories have ensued. Some leadership theories include; great man, transactional,
situational, style, trait, skill, contingency, transformational, ... Show more content on

If the competent and qualified physician is leader of a public health or healthcare institution
and he is deemed a great leader based on his charisma and ambition, when there is a challenge
such as an outbreak and he is able to proffer solution. He will be respected and trusted more.
However, a demerit to this approach is that it is too simplistic and may prevent contribution from
other qualified members of the system. Hence serving to demotivate them at their work because
they may feel irrelevant. Also, the problem of succession quickly comes to mind, so in the event
of loss or absence of the great leader , there will be a problem with replacing him and the
institution may suffer. This leads to another demerit of the theory. Based on the fact that a leader
had to be born that way, there is no way to teach leadership to another person or improve one s
own level of leadership. More recent theories and occurrence has invalidated this claim.
Much of the great man theory praises characteristics that are majorly associated with natural male
characteristics and used male examples in its explanation. In orders words, women cannot be
leaders. But this has been negated, as there were females who successfully led men to wars in
history. An example is Ashanti (a woman) who led her people to a successful war). In recent years,

Crew resource management started with a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB),
proposal made amid their investigation of the United Airlines Flight 173 accident. In 1978, over
Portland, Oregon where this aircraft and crew ran out of fuel while the captain was trying to fix
landing gear problem and ignored repeated hints of other crew members telling them that they are
dwindling fuel supply. Only when the engines began to flame out the captain realized their horrible
situation. Bad communication and loss of situational awareness led them to crash over six miles
short of the runway, killing approximately 200 passengers. CRM was born from this catastrophe
because investigators discovered that most of air crashes was caused by human error

Streetcar Named Desire Critical Analysis
The second day of the show, On October 11th, 2017. I had an opportunity of seeing one of
Tennessee Williams s playwright, A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Stephen Thomas.
Performed excellently at Tarrant County College Northeast Playhouse. The purpose of my visit
was to learn about all aspects of theatre, from basic acting skills to technical designing. Also, this
was my first time attended to watch a live performance by the college student.
A Streetcar Named Desire is the story about of a girl named Blanche DuBois, travels from the town
of Laurel to live with her sister in the New Orleans French Quarter. Her sister, Stella live in a two
room flat with her brother in law, Stanley Kowalski. She finds Stanley vulgar, boisterous, and
dominant husband. However, Stanley does not like her presence and thinks that Blanche comes
with a secret. Unfortunately, they do not like each other. Stanley feels that while she is staying
with them, Blanche tries to convince Stella that he is loud and rough as common. He wants
Blanche to leave, so he gives her a bus ticket back to Laurel for her birthday. Later on, Stanley
gossips to Stella that he has gathered on Blanche, telling her about what did Blanche do in the past.
At the end of the play, he brutally rapes Blanche, while Stella is at the hospital with their first child.
Blanche becomes psychotic crisis by destroying her both physically and mentally from what
Stanley did to her. Blanche tells the truth about Stanley s assault to Stella, but her sister disbelieves
her. Blanche has suffered a complete mental breakdown and is to be committed to a mental hospital.
The genre of the play is the domestic drama that mentions the concept of human desire in the form
of an adult content and situations. A technique such as physical acting, suspense, and the violence
are used throughout the play. All these techniques need to be applied successfully in order to create
the atmosphere intended. By using the technique of suspense, it builds up a state of mental
insecurity, uncertainty or excitement within the person. Alongside this adding the technique of
anticipation gives the audience the impression that something is going to happen, but didn t know
what or when therefore building

Scarlet Letter Light Vs Light Essay
In Nathaniel Hawthorne s, The Scarlet Letter, the contrast between light and darkness, or the
absence of light, is prevalent. Hawthorne uses light to show society and what it favors, while he
uses darkness and shadows to demonstrate what society does not like. The Puritans, a religious
group in the 16th and 17th centuries in America, sought to purify the church and its believers from
the traditional, Catholic ideals. They valued community over individualism and shunned all sinners.
Hester Prynne, the main protagonist, commits adultery against her husband with one of the town s
ministers, Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester s sin is revealed, due to the birth of Pearl, their daughter,
while Dimmesdale s sin is kept hidden. Each character struggles with the views of society and
finding their true self in different ways; however, they all struggle with conforming to the ideals of
the society. Therefore, light demonstrates the constriction of the true human nature by society,
while darkness allows one to be unique and free from social constraints.
Daylight or sunlight represents society and, like society, the daylight also rejects Hester because
of her sin. Pearl, always observant, says to Hester that the sunshine does not love you. It runs
away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom (Hawthorne 160). The
sunshine rejects Hester because of her scarlet letter, just like society does. After her public
shaming, she only finds a friend in Pearl because everyone

American Influence On Upper Canada
American Influence on Upper Canada: Pre 1812
Upper Canada was created in 1791 to accommodate the Loyalist refugees and land hunting farmers
of the United States after the American Revolution. In addition of the existing two colonies, a third
colony was created by diving the Province of Quebec into Lower Canada which resides in the east
and Upper Canada which resides in the west. The colony was made official by the British
Parliament in the Constitution Act of 1791. Afterwards, the colonies became populated with pre
dominantly American inhabitants and their French speaking counterpart. Consequently, it was
difficult for Upper Canada to merge with these two different cultures, but proven otherwise when
the dualism between French culture and American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Civil Law of England was formally introduced into Upper Canada in 1792 (Riddell 165).
Their law greatly differed and was based on their autonomous ego. In Riddell s 1915 journal The
Duel in Early Canada, Blackstone comments the practice of English Civil Law by the Loyalist as
where both parties meet avowedly with an intent to murder thinking it their duty as gentlemen, and
claiming as their right to wanton with their own lives those of their fellow creatures, without any
warrant or authority from a power either divine or human, but in the direct contradiction to the laws
of God and man (Riddell 165). This signifies that the intention of the Loyalist were crude and
irresponsible. They did it out of their egotistic notions. This explains why the political standpoint of
Canada was poor during the War of 1812. The Democratic Republican party did not prepare the
country sufficiently for the war and limited the nation s chances for success (Tucker 3). Canada was
against the participation in the war and wanted to remain neutral. Either way, America threated to
attack and made Canada an unwanted third party victim. The Democratic Republican distrusted
expansive government and feared standing along military establishment (3). The English Civil Law
ended up dividing the country than bring it together. In addition, certain contents of the English

Flourishing from Success
The scientific enterprise is all about failure; I mean, you learn so much from failure. And you learn
almost nothing from success. This scientist is stating that one cannot gain any knowledge without
failing. This is not true. Once one obtains success one now knows exactly what to do to achieve
success, thus opening doors and further experiences for them. The novel The Immortal Life of
Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, due to the success of tissue culture researcher Dr. George Gey
can further dispute this quote. His success in tissue culture led to further discoveries, and became

base for all cell experimentation. This allowed scientists to standardize culture techniques and

...Her cells went up in the first space missions to see what would happen to human cells in zero
gravity, they helped with some of the most important advances in medicine: the polio vaccine,
chemotherapy, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization. (Skloot, 2) The only reason any of
these discoveries occurred was because of the success of Dr. George Gey in 1951. His success in
culturing the first immortal human cells led to multiple advances in the medical field. Other
scientists and researchers utilized and learned his success; expanding and creating medicine and
the medical field we know today. Dr. Gey s extremely influential discovery proves that you can in
fact learn from success. Not only learn, but also flourish.

Essay On Magnetic Field
Summer of 2017 saw UT Southwestern Medical Center make considerable strides in biotech with
the development of high frequency alternating magnetic fields to destroy bacterial films on the
surfaces of artificial joints in the body simply by heating the joints themselves. These bacterial
infections tend to be of great detriment to patients, and they prove impeccably resilient to
antibiotics. Since then, that same research has been furthered to prove itself on human test subjects.
Now, the U.S. Energy Department illustrates the ability to see bacterial cells magnetic fields via
electron microscopy, which marks a milestone both for microscopy and for scientific rendering of
magnetic nano objects in liquid and bacterial cell magnetic fields... Show more content on

When we look at samples prepared in the conventional way, we have to make many assumptions
about their properties based on their final state, but with the new technique, we can now observe
these processes first hand, Prozorov explains. It can help us understand the dynamics of
macromolecule aggregation, nanoparticle self assembly, and the effects of electric and magnetic
fields on that process. This bears significant implications for biotechnological applications,
especially in light of recent research regarding the use of magnetic heating to eradicate bacteria
from surfaces within the human body.
People get metal parts implanted all the time to compensate for injuries or very old body parts.
These pieces range from metal plates to pins to artificial joints, but they all serve relatively similar
purposes holding bones together. The problem that comes from this from time to time is that
bacteria inside a patient s body eventually find these metal surfaces and seek refuge on or in them.
Ordinarily, physicians recommend surgery to get rid of those bacteria, but new research suggests
that surgery may no longer be necessary; rather, it may be possible to get the same result with the
non invasive alternative of magnetic heating.
These bacteria can be very difficult to remove because they form biofilms thin sheets that form a
viscous, protective membrane of sorts like plaque on enamel. Even though this only happens to

What Is The Situationist Perspective In Lord Of The Flies
Dr. Zimbardo uses a situationist perspective on the ways through which anti social behavior is
understood, treated and prevented. This view contrasts with the traditional dispositional
perspective, which locates evil within individual predispositions and looks at a person s internal
factors and traits. The situationist perspective is different in that, unlike the dispositional
perspective, it often uses experimental and laboratory research to demonstrate vital phenomena,
whereas other perspectives may only use archival or correlational data to suggest such answers.
The main example that illustrates through experimental research and social analysis is the ease by
which ordinary, good people are induced into behaving in evil ways.... Show more content on

We live in a world cloaked with evil; it is ironic how humans are capable of committing the most
heroic, selfless acts and also the most vile and horrific ones.
Lord of the Flies and the Psychology of Deindividuation
This section is mainly about The Lord of the Flies by William Golding and how it illustrates that
one s external physical appearance can lead to a tremendous change in one s mental state. It is
really interesting how in the book, once the boys get over the initial moral dilemma of whether to
kill a pig and live or whether to let the pig live and die themselves, they have no problem with
killing pigs. With every killing, the death of the pig seems to become more brutal and
demoralizing. At one point, they even impale the pig with a stick in the anus, proclaiming their
deed in horrific valor. This goes back to sexual aggression because it can be viewed as the raping
and killing of a female pig. I can justify the gradual ease of killing pigs with an example. My
friend, who goes hunting often, told me about how he can manage to kill a dear without feeling
bad inside. He said that the actual killing is only hard the first time and that the other times, it is
relatively easy because one simply stops thinking about it. One thinks about the deer as the prey, not
as an innocent animal minding its own business. As for the experiment with the deindividuated and
individuated women, it seems to make a lot of sense

Why I Quit The Klan Summary
In the article, Why I Quit the Klan from American Dreams: Lost and Found by Studs Terkel it
touches upon the life of former president of the Ku Klux Klan, C. P. Ellis. Throughout his whole
life he always had this feeling of inferiority. His father barely making enough money to even buy
some decent clothes for himself, made Ellis ashamed of what he wore outside. As time passed
nothing in his life seemed to go right, he had a child who was blind and retarded, which he loved
but was an extra expense, worked day in and day out to barely make ends meet, to at one point
getting a heart attack, his whole life was an outright struggle. He needed to blame someone, and so
he released his hate on the black community by joining the Ku Klux Klan, to the point that he
almost killed two black kids for stealing from a white child. Joining the Klan was a way to become
something for himself, he wanted to be heard, he wanted his struggles to go away. Although after
constant fighting against the black community something just did not feel right. Once he was

The Conflicts Between Good and Evil Found in To Kill and Mockingbird by Harper Lee
In her book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses many different characters and parts of the
plot to show how deeply the conflict between good and evil can affect everyday life in a small
Alabama town in the 1930 s. The setting of her book is Maycomb, Alabama. Racism between
white and black people was a very big problem in Maycomb. The white people did not like the
blacks and thought they were bad people. The two main characters are Atticus Finch and Tom
Robinson. Atticus is an important lawyer, and he has two children, Scout and Jem. The conflict of
racism explodes when Tom is set up by an evil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first, the Sheriff acted like most of the people in the town, even though his conscience started to
bother him.
At the end of the book, Bob Ewell tried to hurt Scout and Jem in the forest because he wanted
revenge on Atticus. During Tom s trial, Atticus made Bob Ewell very angry at the questions he
asked and the evidence and Bob Ewell wanted revenge. Boo Radcliff killed Bob Ewell and the
Sheriff saw it, but he changed the story to say that it was an accident because he knew Bob
Ewell was evil and that Boo was a good man. The Sheriff s decision was another reminder about
the titled of the book, To Kill a Mockingbird because Boo was a Mockingbird character just like
Tom.
Harper Lee also showed a conflict between good and evil by using the characters in her story.
She showed the conflict inside a man s own conscience when Atticus had the courage to stand up
for Tom. The Sheriff also had goodness in his heart when he decided to not tell anyone what he
really saw when the Boo Radley killed Bob Ewell. Another example of conflict within Atticus
heart was his fear for his children s safety versus his belief that it was the right thing to do to be

Literature Review On Sparse Group Lasso
b.Sparse Group Lasso
The sparse group lasso is also known as a special case of group lasso that place an additional
penalty 1 norm of the coefficient vector. The sparse group lasso allows the overlaps in the
groups. The sparse set of group is generated by group lasso. The models in the group if included
then all the variables in the group become non zero. Sometimes we like to have both the sparsity
of group and within each group, i.e. between and within the group. Such as example, in genes
expression we like to identify particular useful genes among the number of genes, this is the
focus of sparse group lasso. The sparsity in sparse group lasso is exists in two types, first is group
wise sparsity and the other is within group sparsity. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sparse group lasso can allow using the group information but cannot force to use entire group.
The sparse group lasso can solve the problem with un penalized covariates.
V.CONCLUSION. Feature selectionis a step that finds the subset from the original feature set to
some criteria of instance importance. In this paper the concept of group feature selection is
review that specifies different approaches in this ground. This literature review examines the
recent work of feature selection where feature posses certain group structure. The methods found
for group feature selection have discussed here. The general approaches of group feature selection
such as group lasso and sparse group lasso are described. The group lasso is an extension of
Standard lasso which tend to perform group selection, if the group of features is selected then all the
features in the groups are selected. Sparse group lasso takes the advantage of group lasso and
produces an efficient solution with simultaneous between and within group. The group feature
selection tries to minimize the redundant and irrelevant features from the group to decreases the
computational time. The above dimensional categorization of group feature selection algorithm give

Welcome to our WordPress lesson. So with this Knowledge bit, we are going to talk about how
easy it is to add media to a post and how to actually finalize a post so in this lesson we are going to
talk about setting up post.
Customize Permalink
We have also got an option here to customize our permalinks where we might want to actually
create a really custom URL s, so coolurlhere . so that s exactly what I wanted if I want to have a

lot of cool stuff because its dated base driven content it s not actually connected to these URL s so
you can change these and if you don t like it, you can actually ... Show more content on

Another really cool feature we can create galleries to better organize our images.
[Screenshot5]
So we have one more thing we are able to actually link it to a custom URL, we can link it to the
media file or we can just leave it without a link so that can all be done right here Custom URL all
we had in that link there.
[Screenshot6]
And here you have those size options that we looked at earlier and we have got the ability for
thumbnail, medium large and as you can see its updated the dimensions so that the width there
is always going to be that max width of 300 but the height is the one that s going to change so we
don t have disproportionate images because if we uploaded an image and if we wanted a square
300x300 we can t do that with an image of size 1200x630.
[Screenshot7]
So keep that in mind and I am just going to leave it as a medium by default because this is
probably the best way to go when I am adding it to my page. And now I have to do insert post and
there it gets inserted, I see that I have got the caption when I go to the actual HTML it s created all
of that HTML so caption ID it s giving some mega information there and it s also got a class so
size medium so that s where it s getting that max medium of 300. [Screenshot8]
So this is a really good option with these captions and this mega information captions are good for
screen readers and so on and a lot of themes and templates really do take advantage of what s

The Consequences Of Media Bias In The Mass Media
Everyday we go through life with the same rituals that we have come accustomed We repeat
these daily cycles so often and never realize why we do the things we do, or the reason behind
them. We bring up the subject of Media Bias and at most times it seems as if it is an abstract
concept. We do not usually see the blindfold that is held over our eyes while we are presented
with the news about the world, our neighborhood, and our cities. In my opinion, Media Bias is
just a preference automatically set for us based upon many qualities that the viewer audience tend
to share. I will provide evidence that shows that we are all victims of Media Bias and that it
constantly effects our lives even if we don t know it. Society has a tendency to think that a social
issue doesn t have much importance until it hits us personally. A person exposed to a persuasive
communication in the mass mediasees this as having a greater effect on others than on himself or
herself (Eveland, 2003, pg. 117). This statement proves that people rarely disrupts their daily
routines because they believe media tactics aren t directed solely to them. We often feel like we
are above whatever situation is currently being played out by the media, but we all still fall short
when it comes to getting past it. There are times when the news will give out information pointed
towards a specific group that many not have much widespread significance, but they will still report
it because they feel that the message

of how journalists get information and contact sources for a story, the movie has successfully
depicted the bureaucracy in government agencies, the psychological trauma that both journalists

Given that the movie would mostly feature long conversations between characters, it could have
played around with its camera angles to prevent it from being plain and boring. Even the
establishing shots were plain. Almost all of the establishing shots were shots following the
characters walking to the next scene/setting. Some could not even be called establishing shots since
they really did not establish properly the place where the characters were currently at.
Spotlight would have been a close to perfect movie. The content was already a sure attention
grabber. It only lacked in execution. Despite that, it can still be considered as a great movie. It was
not just informative, but it was also eye opening. It reminded the public of the press credibility that
they do not make up stories, and that they work hard to obtain information for their stories and
deliver this information in its simplest form so the general public can easily understand. The

Essay on James Joyce s Araby
James Joyce s Dubliners The Symbol of the Church in Araby
Joyce s short story Araby is filled with symbolic images of a church. It opens and closes with
strong symbols, and in the body of the story, the images are shaped by the young), Irish narrator s
impressions of the effect the Church of Ireland has upon the people of Ire land. The boy is fiercely
determined to invest in someone within this Church the holiness he feels should be the natural state
of all within it, but a succession of experiences forces him to see that his determination is in vain.
At the climax of the story, when he realizes that his dreams of holiness and love are inconsistent
with the actual world, his anger and anguish are directed, not toward the Church, ... Show more

Since the boy is the narrator, the inclusion of these symbolic images in the description of the
setting shows that the boy is sensitive to the lack of spiritual beauty in his surroundings. Outside
the main setting are images symbolic of those who don t belong to the Church. The boy and his
companions go there at times, behind their houses, along the dark muddy lanes, to where the rough
tribes (the infidel) dwell. Here odors arise from the ash pits those images symbolic to James Joyce
of the moral decay of his nation.
Even the house in which the youthful main character lives adds to the sense of moral decay. The
former tenant, a priest (now dead), is shown to have been insensitive to the spiritual needs of his
people. His legacy was a collection of books that showed his confusion of the sacred with the
secular and there is evidence that he devoted his life to gathering money and furniture. He left
behind no evidence of a life of spiritual influence.
Despite these discouraging surroundings, the boy is determined to find some evidence of the
loveliness his idealistic dreams tell him should exist within the Church. His first love becomes the
focal point of this determination. In the person of Mangan s sister, obviously somewhat older
than the boy and his companions, his longings find an object of worship. The boy s feelings for
the girl are a confused mixture of sexual desire and of sacred adoration, as

Workers were usually male immigrants, free blacks, and slaves and most only worked for less
than 6 months. Those who worked were usually desperate for a job to put food on the table. In
the next chapters, the struggles of women and children are outlined. The jobs for women of the
early 1800 s consisted of sewing, washing, cleaning, cooking, and reproducing the next
generation of laborers. In , a rise in domestic service also ensued within black or white, free and
enslaved women. These women were hired as servants, nannies, and maids. Children also began
working as well. Orphans were often used as domestic servants and teen apprentices. The Female
Association Charity School taught destitute girls who were raised on streets to read, write, cipher,
sew. They were also trained to be domestic servants and then hired in the future. Women were paid
much less than men, because it was thought that they were dependent of their husbands; it was
unheard of to have female breadwinners . Factory accidents, crime, abandonment, and abuse from
husbands left women desperate to support children. The wages that seamstresses had in early 17th
century Baltimore was not a living wage. It was not substantial enough to support themselves or
their children. So in 1833, women held strike and refused to work only worked if employers paid

Were the Difficulties Faced by Charles Ii Due More to...
Were the difficulties faced by Charles II due more to financial concerns than foreign policy in the
years 1667 1678?
Charles II faced a vast amount of difficulties during his reign, but particularly during the period of
1667 1678. He suffered financial difficulties, foreign policy issues and religious problems. Finance
became an obvious problem due to his lack of funds, however his foreign policy was constantly
needing money, and a combination of both left Charles with many difficulties.
A substantial difficulty that Charles II faced was that of finance. Finance was a major issue
between crown and parliament, especially in between the years 1665 to 1667. The Crown s
income had dropped by ВЈ200,000, and MPs believed that the problems ... Show more content on

Almost echoing the problems faced with finance was Charles Foreign policy. Charles planned an
attack on the Dutch in 1672 with help from the French. This required finance and with the payment
of loans, Crown only had an income of ВЈ400,000. So, Charles declared the crown bankrupt,
making it harder to secure future loans but making parliament give him ВЈ1.2 million to fund the
attack on the Dutch. This shows the foreign policy being the reason for the difficulties faced by
Charles, as a lot of the financial concerns were due to the need to fund wars.
From 1670 Charles had a new alliance with France and he wanted a third war against the Dutch
to avenge the humiliation from the second one. Between the years 1673 1674 saw the Dutch war
go badly and it proved costly. This again showed Charles as facing difficulties from the foreign
policy as he was too proud to let the war lie, and therefore again need more funding, relying on
finance. Charles was forced to sign the treaty of Westminster in 1674, which was to end the conflict
and England kept New York, whilst the Dutch kept Surinam. In 1675 Parliament only voted
ВЈ300,000 for the Navy, but due to continuing French success against the Dutch, parliament then
voted ВЈ600,000. This again shows how the foreign policy was affecting the financial situation,
which then continues to drive Charles and Parliament away.

Steven Spielberg s Jaws and Ridley Scott s Gladiator Essay
Steven Spielberg s Jaws and Ridley Scott s Gladiator The two films being examined are the
thriller Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, and the action film Gladiator directed by Ridley
Scott. Both directors create epic films; the films are momentous and are designed to manipulate
the emotions. A thriller is intended to appeal to basic human instinct to the need of feeling fear
and survival. Action movies are designed to appeal to our sense of danger: pace and experience is
something we want but don t have in our everyday lives to this extent. Both films are examples of

When the Barbarians enter the scene they all appear uncivilised and disorganizes in

camera flicks around at a frenetic pace, showing the chaos of battle. As Maximus enters on a
horse, the light is streaming through the trees making him appear a hero, a ray of hope in the
dark. As he begins mercilessly killing Germanians the director manipulates the audience into
condoning the slaughter, and what is more, willing him to kill further lending credibility to his
role. In Jaws, the shot opens on the beach with the campfire at night. It s a familiar setting; the
teenagers are all stereotypically middle class college kids , very warm and relaxed. The director
designed the scene to provoke a recognizable combination to the audience, to convey how normal

Women are commonly perceived as being unfit for any forms of higher education and because of
societal pressure and expectations retreat to a life of raising children and cooking meals for their

The greatest time of the year is the winter. Winter is a time to have fun in the snow and cherish

winter solstice, and New Year s Eve. In the winter it gets cold enough for the miracle of crystalline

also go to lakes that are solid enough and play hockey or ice skate around with their friends. For

surprise for those around me to see a book in my hand wherever I go, absorbed by a world that
was not invented by me. As a result of this, I was recognised within school as my picture was
placed on the wall in the English Department praising how much I read. As a child I wanted to
become an author so the ability to enter somebody s thoughts through words on a page has always
filled me with a genuine excitement. There is no doubt that an English degree at University is for
me, I want to continue my love for the subject in depth and take this further to become a Secondary

Through studying English at University I will be able to study modules that truly fascinate me and
encourage me to read books more imaginatively and critically. Recently in the news it has been
said that due to Brexit there is the possibility that a new language could be forming Euro English.
Developments in the English language never fail to intrigue me as teaching English at a secondary

Neural Modeling
Researchers in the field of neuroscience have long disputed the type of neural modelling that
allows for the processing of visual stimuli in the brain. I believe that a hierarchical framework
exists in which both distributed and localised modelling can occur at different stages. Distributed
modelling occurs at lower hierarchal levels and localised modelling, characterised by grandmother
cells, occurs at higher levels. Neurons in higher levels pool information passed on from lower
levels to so that the representation of concepts becomes more complex and specialised. It is through
this formation of grandmother cells that a visual stimulus can be represented in the brainin an
invariant manner.
Research on the processing of visual stimuli have lead to findings that supports the notion of
hierarchal modelling in the brain. Hubel and Wiesel (1968) discovered the hierarchal coding of

higher areas of my brain. The grandmother cell in my brain that has been devoted to her will be
invariantly activated when I am presented with a visual stimulus of her such as the newspaper

U.S. Policy on Libyan Chemical Weapons Proliferation Essay
U.S. Policy on Libyan Chemical Weapons Proliferation
Introduction
A legacy of aggression exists between the United States and Libya which pervades every facet of
U.S. foreign policy, particularly in the non proliferation arena. The absolute distrust of
Revolutionary Leader Colonel Mu ammar Abu Minyar al Qadhafi and his government expressed
by U.S. officials has prompted the United States to play the role of policing non proliferation of
nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, the so called weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), in
Libya. As Libya is a party to the Pelindaba Treaty for the establishment of the African nuclear
weapon free zone (ANWFZ), it is bound to a commitment of nuclear non proliferation. However,
this treaty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of proportionality, however, is difficult to ascertain and the doctrine can only be
invoked in the case of attack. Therefore, U.S. use of nuclear weapons in response to the present
Libyan production of chemical weapons is unjustifiable.
The chemical weapons non proliferation regime boasts a strong treaty in the form of the Chemical
Weapons Convention (CWC), but as Libya is not a party to this treaty, its restrictions have no
bearing on Libyan chemical weapons production. Libya, therefore, presents a problem in that its
chemical weapons production constitutes a world threat, but its actions are fully legal. The Geneva
Protocol of 1925 merely prohibits the use of chemical weapons, not their production, stockpiling, or
possession. Thus, though U.S. policy options are constrained by its agreements and security
assurances, the United States must seek out legal and effective means of ending Libyan production
of chemical weapons.
Background
Libya has long been considered a state threatening the interests of the WMD non proliferation
regimes. Though Libya is a non nuclear weapon state party to the NPT, [its] commitment to the
accord is suspect because of [its] demonstrated interest in acquiring nuclear arms (Jones 1995:15).
This resolution became more suspicious when Libya joined Bhutan and India in casting a negative
vote in the overall 158 to 3 vote in favor of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (Jones 1995:16).

There are many events that took place between England and France that built up to what is known

England to have claim over lands in France. This increased tension between the English king,

King Edward III maintained that he held claim to the French throne. When Edward III was only

The companies leaders can improve their business by investing in development new products or

McGregor believed that people want to learn and that work is their natural activity to the extent
that they develop self discipline and self development (Accel Team, 2008). They see their reward

NEED Theories
It is widely accepted that a good deal of motivation has its origins in certain basic needs. Need
theories particularly the works of Maslow, Alderfer and McClelland are based on the assumption
that basic wants or requirements govern much of people s behaviour. This notion has pervasive
implications for human resources policies and practices tend to develop the performance of a range

However, attention to needs must be balanced. To emphasize salary and benefits (in the fulfillment

actualisation, and achievement) may be risky. On the other hand, to expect employees to increase

Chipotle s Strategies In Advertising
You can have any colour you like providing its black, Henry Ford s famous quote resonated with
me while reading about product led companies. In a sense, it seems as though it connects to the idea
of asymmetric or one way communication. To Ford, he had created the product that virtually
anyone would want, but in reality he might have deprived the company of reaching its full
potential. In this sense, it could be considered that Ford took a managementperspective that differs
from the excellence project or theory that Grunig (1992) spent time researching. Likewise, the
Marks and Spencer case seemed to follow Fords idea that we know what the consumer wants,
regardless of what they tell us. From the standpoint of someone who has had first hand experience
attempting to sell a good or product at the Akron Zoo, I ve found it more effective to take in
feedback from the customer or target audience. When Marks and Spencer started to advertise, and

Alice In Wonderland Loss Of Identity
When one s identity is lost, the happiest place is one of which is the most familiar to us. In
Lewis Carroll s Alice in Wonderland, Alice is having a history lesson before she decides to
follow a rabbit down a rabbit hole. Inside the rabbit hole, Alice is unable to sustain a sense of
herself (insecurity) which contributes to the reader seeing her lost of object of desire (objet petit
a) in the form of images standing in for the womb (female imagery). As a result, Alice goes
through regression, which is a return to previous psychological state. Carroll uses the rabbit hole
scene to show Alice regressing as she searches for her identity within society, ultimately suggesting,
one desires to escape rather than face their unstable sense of self.... Show more content on

i.Born on August 1, 1779, in Frederick County, Maryland, Francis Scott Key became a lawyer
who witnessed the British attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The fort withstood the
day long assault, inspiring Key to write a poem that would become the future U.S. national

The Faerie Queen By Edmund Spencer
The Faerie Queen by Edmund Spencer uses erotic and mystifying dreams to provide insight into
the representation of gender relations; it is through women that the emotional state of desire as
well as terror is experienced. Throughout the epic women dominate the visions experienced by
the knights which sometimes makes the dreams more complex and difficult to interpret.
Interestingly, the male counterparts within the context of the epic explore controversial
implications of their virtues as men, because of how they conceptualize women within their
dreams. In the first canto of the epic the Red Cross Knight conceptualizes Una in his dream as a
deceiver. However, it is Archimago that is responsible for Kinght s sense of deception as he
sends an emissary to the underworld to acquire a fit false dreame (I.i.43.9) with the sole purpose
of taunting the Red Cross Knight. Archimago wants to take advantage of his thoughts and feeling
towards Una. A dream of this nature would corrupt his chivalric code, and strip him down to a
mere man his manly hart did melt away (I.i.47.5), left Red Cross bathed in wanton blis and
wicked ioy (I.i.47.6), then prompted him to fly into a rage against the innocent Una. The Red
Cross Knight is tormented by the dream of Una , and yet is plagued once again by Archimago who
sends a springht, that feigning dreame, and that faire forged Spright (I.ii.2.2) to give the knight with
a vision of Una engaging sexually in an illicit manner. Not surprisingly,

Essay on Common Teenage Problems
Teenage is a fundamental stage of life that each human being passes through. Some people face this
period of their life strongly and positively, while others face many problems and difficulties. This
depends on the environment these young adults live in, their parents, their friends, their living
conditions, their education, and many other factors. Teenagers face many problems such as
becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol, being influenced negatively by their peers, self imageand
weight, or even arguments with their parents
Drugs between teenagers is one of the most serious problems, because it causes a change in the
behavior of any teenager and a physical change too. Most of the teenagers use alcoholic drinks as a

Peer pressure has always been present and will also always be present. It is not a disease or a
crime, it is an influence; either a negative or a positive one. Negative peer pressure is an
influence put on a person to do something wrong, or something the person doesn t want to do.
This may be stealing, taking drugs, or other dangerous actions. If someone influences you into
doing something like this it is considered a negative peer pressure. This is a major problem in
most schools all around the world. Teenagers usually feel peer pressure when they feel
unpopular between their friends, or when they want to be accepted in a group of other
teenagers. The group is a place where one feels accepted, where he can feel good about himself,
where he feels secure. It increases his self esteem, and it also enhances his self image.
Unfortunately, teenagers who want to be part of these groups, need to follow certain unpleasant
routines, such as stealing, smoking, taking drugs, or drinking alcohol. Many times they do things
that they would never have imagined themselves doing before meeting a new group of people.
Some teens try to make the quot;right quot; decision so others will admire them. Having parents
or other responsible adults they can turn to for help or advice is crucial at this point in a teen s life.
Teenagers might also face self image or weight problems. One of the main illnesses that comes from

Essay On Colonoscopy
The American College of Gastroenterology Guidelines recommend colonoscopy,as the preferred
cancer screening test for patients 50 years and older(Rex 2017). The technique of Endoscopic
Mucosal Resection (EMR) was developed for removingsessile or flat lesions confined to the
superficial layers (mucosa and submucosa) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the colon,
esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. EMR with submucosal injection helps facilitate complete
resection of polyps (Hwang 2015; Fyock 2010; Steele 2013), which is critical, as incomplete
resections may contribute to the development of colon cancer in patients despite being on a
colonoscopyscreening/surveillance pathway (i.e. interval cancers). (von Renteln 2017; Bujanda

(Hwang 2015). This is typically controlled by snare tip soft coagulation (STSC), a technique
involving protruding the snare tip 2 3 mm beyond the catheter, followed by application of
coagulating current while lightly touching the tip directly onto the bleeding point. Vigorous
irrigation with the foot pump clears the resection field of blood and helps localize the bleeding
vessel. In the minority of cases where STSC does not achieve hemostasis, coagulating forceps or
through the scope (TTS) clips may be used, both of which have been associated with a low rate of
re bleeding and complications. (Ma 2016)
Delayed post polypectomy bleeding (DPPB) is rare after cold snare polypectomy and is usually
related to thermal injury following hot snare polypectomy, occurring in 1 2% of patients with
sessile polyps 20mm in size. The risk of DPPB is directly related to polyp size (risk increases by
9% to 13% for every 1 mm in polyp diameter), right colon lesions, pedunculated morphology, and
polyp pathology. For pedunculated polyps, the increased risk of DPPB is associated with a stalk
exceeding 5 mm, polyp head 20 mm in size, location in right colon, and the presence of
malignancy. Most DPPB cases can be managed endoscopically., In many cases bleeding resolves
spontaneously. Options for endoscopic hemostasis in the event of active bleeding include forceps
coagulation or endoclips. The method selected is based on lesion location, endoscopist

The Mughal Empire Was Created By A Man Known Babur
One of the most famous empires in India, known as the Mughal Empire was created by a man
known Babur (who was a decent of Genghis Khan). He didn t have many successes in remaining
and conquering central Asia like his ancestors so therefore he decided to try and conquer South
Asia. Around 1527 he defeated two of the most powerful forces in India but was not able to turn
the territory he gained into an empire. After his death he left that responsibility to his son
Humayun, who even through lacked the military genius, was able to gain and have a foot hold in
Agraand Delhi (mainly through the help of Persian Military). But it was his son Akbar who is
credited for really laying the foundation for the Empire to flourish. During his reign from 1556
1605, he managed to gain territory over the northern and central India. He also secured the
northwestern frontier (gateway to India for so many previous invasions). His most important
territorial gain was the area of Gujarat, in the west, which provided the Mughal empirewith
enormous wealth from its commercial centers, as well as access to the Arabian Sea and hence
opportunity for lucrative trade with both the Europeans and the Ottoman empire. He was also into
in spiritual and religious issues, and in 1582 he created a new code of religious behavior. And had

Buddy The Elf Research Paper
Buddy the Elf arrived to my house on Thanksgiving of 2008. The eight inch, red suited, stuffed
elf spied on our every move. Once we would fall asleep, Buddy would use his magic to fly back
to the North Pole to report our behavior to Santa. The elf came with one strict rule though, if he
was ever touched by a human hand he would lose all magic and not be able to venture back to the
North Pole. Therefore, nobody touched Buddy and everyone enjoyed his presence in the
household. There was one exception though, my sister, Liz. The elf creeped her out and the two
never enjoyed each other s company. This concluded in her posting a note on her door in scribbly
handwriting stating, Buddy must never enter this room or he will pay. As the years passed,

The Monuments Men Rhetorical Analysis
What does one s mind automatically point to when the words World War II are uttered? Mass
destruction is one of the first things that comes to mind, the spread of hatred and complete cities
in ruins is another point of reference. However, who and what survived the war is often forgotten
and merely mentioned at the fore front of discussions. Robert M. Edsel s The Monuments Men
tells the story of nine men and one woman who set out to preserve and rescue works of art that had
been taken by the Nazi regime throughout Europe. Without the brave and rigorous work of these
characters, thousands of items would have been lost at the hands of Hitler s men. Despite the large

He does this with a sizable group of characters and various viewpoints from different groups to
engage the reader and bring his story to life. The author s use of primary sources adds another
element to the reader s ability to understand the factual happenings of the real life experiences the
characters underwent. This method of engaging the audience is ingenious because it creates a
consistent level of interest. Edsel is right to call it the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History because of
the brutal and burdensome work that when into this stringent mission and the primary sources used
demonstrate exactly what the Monuments Men had gone through and the level of commitment
that was put into what they were doing. However, despite it being a non fiction narrative, Edsel
elects to include small scenes of dialogue. This invention was not effect because these various
passage did not offer a different dimension to the story. It was clear to the audience that these
scenes were inauthentic because of their unorthodox placement in the middle of a facts driven

entire cities, with artwork surviving, and the investigation into who saved these makes it engaging

Strong Proactive Information Security Measures
Strong proactive information security measures in an organization could mean the difference
between a data breach and normal business. As it stands, attackers are getting more persistent, better
at finding out confidential information, and constantly finding new ways to gain access to internal
networks. In order to meet the rising threat, organizations must be able to defend themselves
properly. While standard perimeter defense measures can accept and deny connections, they lack a
strong deterrent to ensure there will be no future attacks. This report focuses on an intrusion
technology that will gather information and use it to recraft a similar attackback to the attacker in
hopes that a much stronger message will be sent.
1. Introduction
With cyber attacks on organizations becoming more frequent, and with the need to keep
organizations secure, counter measures must be taken. While firewalls can help to prevent attacks,
simply dropping packets and declining services is becoming an inefficient message to send to
attackers. Taking existing perimeter defense techniques, like firewalls, and amplifying them to
create a new style of device that will respond to attacks is the next step in firewall technology. With
these Offensive Perimeter Devices (OPDs), organizations can fight back. Imagine being able to
replicate the attack that is in progress and use it against the attackers. The OPD will help to
eliminate Denial of Service attacks and ultimately keep an organization up

How Does Shakespeare Use Deception In The Merchant Of Venice
Self expression is the human capability of revealing the attributes and features of one s self.
However, humans have the ability to methodically select how cohabiting individuals will perceive
his or her character. Through lies and secrets, a human being distorts their true self from the
perception of another. William Shakespeare s The Merchant Of Venice
contains situations in which
characters lie to conceal their secrets and self. First, Jessica, the Jewish moneylender s daughter,
uses lies to escape her father s house and elope with her love. Secondly, Shylock, the Jewish
moneylender in Venice, suppresses his motives and thoughts in the presences of his Venetian
neighbours. Lastly, lies are used by Bassanio, an Italian lord of Venice, as he appears to be a
wealthy man but is truly in debt. Clearly, Shakespeare uses the theme appearance versus reality to
disguise true intentions and deceive characters.

Unquestionably, Shylock behaves out of character while creating the bond with Antonio and
Bassanio. Despite the Jew s hatred for Antonio, he is willing to loan him money. Antonio says,
Content, in faith! I ll seal to such a bond, and say there is much kindness in the Jew (1.3.148 49).
This quote confirms Antonio s trust in Shylock s fake kindness and friendly behaviour. Shylock s
obsession with the idea of Antonio in a difficult situation is the primary reason why he agrees to
loan his money and creates the bond out of hatred and villainy but masks his evil hopes in the
presences of Antonio. Antonio is unaware of the seriousness and terms of the bond having
believed the forfeit of a pound of flesh was a joke. Shylock deviously tricks the merchant with the

National Cranberry Case Analysis
National Cranberry is a cooperative of berry growers around North America that share common
production facilities and for the last several years have been experiencing capacity bottlenecks
among other issues. After initial analysis, two main factors that contributed to a decrease in
production were found. The first issue in the business is that the supply trucks and drivers
delivering the harvest were not properly organized and there was not enough space and
organization to allow for smooth offloading of several trucks a day. The second major issue is the
rampant absenteeism and need for overtimework based on shortage of workers. This has driven the
cost of running the business up and drastically reducing profitability. A lesser but... Show more

Nevertheless, some trucks had to wait for up to 3 hours to dump their loads which was solely
attributed to the holding bins which could only hold 7200bbls total of both dry and wet berries.
Additionally, out of the 27 holding bins, only 11 were actually set up to hold wet berries which
made the constrain even more difficult. Once that section of the plant was full there was very
little that crews in receiving could do to alleviate the problem. In the next section of the
production process, dechaffing was possible at a rate of 4500bbl/hour which over a 12 hour
period would be more than enough capacity even on the heaviest barrel deliveries days.
Where the bottlenecks really start to become apparent is in the drying stage of the wet berries
where only 3 drying stations existed and in a combined effort could only dry at 600bbl/hour. In the
harvest of 1980, there was 58% of the total capacity coming in as wet berries which was already
over the capacity based on a 12 hour day. In 1981, the harvest in set to bring in 70% of the berries
as wet berries which would further slow the overall process.
Assuming that the Kiwanee dumpers, dechaffing and de stoning machinery were all working to
their full capacity of 4500bbl/hour, the increase to 70% wet berries would overload the driers
within the first few hours of production. If the RP1 was to add one new

  • 2. Comparing Apple iOS and Google Operating Systems Android vs. iOS: Feature Comparison Introduction The intent of this analysis is to define the differences between the Apple iOS and Google Android operating systems, in addition to discussing the newest features for each. The Pros and Cons of each operating system are discussed, in addition to a chart of relative market share on smartphone and tablet PCs. In addition to relative market share, the number of application downloads will also be shown. Analysis Of Differences Between Android And Apple iOS Mobile Operating Systems The most significant differences between these mobile operating systems is the design philosophy of each, with Apple choosing a closed architecture, and Google with Android, open. This design philosophy is the catalyst of differences between Android and iOS operating systems. The next most significant difference is Android being based on the popular open source kernel Linux while Apple built iOS on OS X operating system (Manikas, Hansen, 1294). Additional differences include Android offering the kernel, user interface and standard baseline applications all as open source, configurable by developers. Another difference is the level of configurability and customization that is supported on Android relative to iOS as exemplified by the open Application Programmer Interface (API) structure that Google has constructed for Android (Puliyenthuruthel, et. al.). The decision by Google to make Android an open architecture based mobile operating system has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Critically Appraise A Popular Leadership Theory Leadership is a concept that is constantly discussed yet there is seldom agreement about what it is. Even though most agree leadership is crucial to success of any people, project or venture. People define leadership differently and often times misconstrue leadership with management. Leadership provides the vision and focuses on the people while management focuses on objectives and tasks. It is however valid that a budding leader may sometimes need to act as both a leader an as a manager whenever necessary. Over the years, in an attempt to define leadership and reach a consensus on what it is, various leadership theories have ensued. Some leadership theories include; great man, transactional, situational, style, trait, skill, contingency, transformational, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the competent and qualified physician is leader of a public health or healthcare institution and he is deemed a great leader based on his charisma and ambition, when there is a challenge such as an outbreak and he is able to proffer solution. He will be respected and trusted more. However, a demerit to this approach is that it is too simplistic and may prevent contribution from other qualified members of the system. Hence serving to demotivate them at their work because they may feel irrelevant. Also, the problem of succession quickly comes to mind, so in the event of loss or absence of the great leader , there will be a problem with replacing him and the institution may suffer. This leads to another demerit of the theory. Based on the fact that a leader had to be born that way, there is no way to teach leadership to another person or improve one s own level of leadership. More recent theories and occurrence has invalidated this claim. Much of the great man theory praises characteristics that are majorly associated with natural male characteristics and used male examples in its explanation. In orders words, women cannot be leaders. But this has been negated, as there were females who successfully led men to wars in history. An example is Ashanti (a woman) who led her people to a successful war). In recent years, we now have ... • 5. Streetcar Named Desire Critical Analysis The second day of the show, On October 11th, 2017. I had an opportunity of seeing one of Tennessee Williams s playwright, A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Stephen Thomas. Performed excellently at Tarrant County College Northeast Playhouse. The purpose of my visit was to learn about all aspects of theatre, from basic acting skills to technical designing. Also, this was my first time attended to watch a live performance by the college student. A Streetcar Named Desire is the story about of a girl named Blanche DuBois, travels from the town of Laurel to live with her sister in the New Orleans French Quarter. Her sister, Stella live in a two room flat with her brother in law, Stanley Kowalski. She finds Stanley vulgar, boisterous, and dominant husband. However, Stanley does not like her presence and thinks that Blanche comes with a secret. Unfortunately, they do not like each other. Stanley feels that while she is staying with them, Blanche tries to convince Stella that he is loud and rough as common. He wants Blanche to leave, so he gives her a bus ticket back to Laurel for her birthday. Later on, Stanley gossips to Stella that he has gathered on Blanche, telling her about what did Blanche do in the past. At the end of the play, he brutally rapes Blanche, while Stella is at the hospital with their first child. Blanche becomes psychotic crisis by destroying her both physically and mentally from what Stanley did to her. Blanche tells the truth about Stanley s assault to Stella, but her sister disbelieves her. Blanche has suffered a complete mental breakdown and is to be committed to a mental hospital. The genre of the play is the domestic drama that mentions the concept of human desire in the form of an adult content and situations. A technique such as physical acting, suspense, and the violence are used throughout the play. All these techniques need to be applied successfully in order to create the atmosphere intended. By using the technique of suspense, it builds up a state of mental insecurity, uncertainty or excitement within the person. Alongside this adding the technique of anticipation gives the audience the impression that something is going to happen, but didn t know what or when therefore building ... • 7. Scarlet Letter Light Vs Light Essay In Nathaniel Hawthorne s, The Scarlet Letter, the contrast between light and darkness, or the absence of light, is prevalent. Hawthorne uses light to show society and what it favors, while he uses darkness and shadows to demonstrate what society does not like. The Puritans, a religious group in the 16th and 17th centuries in America, sought to purify the church and its believers from the traditional, Catholic ideals. They valued community over individualism and shunned all sinners. Hester Prynne, the main protagonist, commits adultery against her husband with one of the town s ministers, Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester s sin is revealed, due to the birth of Pearl, their daughter, while Dimmesdale s sin is kept hidden. Each character struggles with the views of society and finding their true self in different ways; however, they all struggle with conforming to the ideals of the society. Therefore, light demonstrates the constriction of the true human nature by society, while darkness allows one to be unique and free from social constraints. Daylight or sunlight represents society and, like society, the daylight also rejects Hester because of her sin. Pearl, always observant, says to Hester that the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom (Hawthorne 160). The sunshine rejects Hester because of her scarlet letter, just like society does. After her public shaming, she only finds a friend in Pearl because everyone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. American Influence On Upper Canada American Influence on Upper Canada: Pre 1812 Upper Canada was created in 1791 to accommodate the Loyalist refugees and land hunting farmers of the United States after the American Revolution. In addition of the existing two colonies, a third colony was created by diving the Province of Quebec into Lower Canada which resides in the east and Upper Canada which resides in the west. The colony was made official by the British Parliament in the Constitution Act of 1791. Afterwards, the colonies became populated with pre dominantly American inhabitants and their French speaking counterpart. Consequently, it was difficult for Upper Canada to merge with these two different cultures, but proven otherwise when the dualism between French culture and American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Civil Law of England was formally introduced into Upper Canada in 1792 (Riddell 165). Their law greatly differed and was based on their autonomous ego. In Riddell s 1915 journal The Duel in Early Canada, Blackstone comments the practice of English Civil Law by the Loyalist as where both parties meet avowedly with an intent to murder thinking it their duty as gentlemen, and claiming as their right to wanton with their own lives those of their fellow creatures, without any warrant or authority from a power either divine or human, but in the direct contradiction to the laws of God and man (Riddell 165). This signifies that the intention of the Loyalist were crude and irresponsible. They did it out of their egotistic notions. This explains why the political standpoint of Canada was poor during the War of 1812. The Democratic Republican party did not prepare the country sufficiently for the war and limited the nation s chances for success (Tucker 3). Canada was against the participation in the war and wanted to remain neutral. Either way, America threated to attack and made Canada an unwanted third party victim. The Democratic Republican distrusted expansive government and feared standing along military establishment (3). The English Civil Law ended up dividing the country than bring it together. • 9. The Untold Story of Henrietta Lacks Essay Katelyn Jakubowski AP Language and Composition 8/13/12 Flourishing from Success The scientific enterprise is all about failure; I mean, you learn so much from failure. And you learn almost nothing from success. This scientist is stating that one cannot gain any knowledge without failing. This is not true. Once one obtains success one now knows exactly what to do to achieve success, thus opening doors and further experiences for them. (Skloot, 2) The only reason any of these discoveries occurred was because of the success of Dr. George Gey in 1951. His success in culturing the first immortal human cells led to multiple advances in the medical field. Other scientists and researchers utilized and learned his success; expanding and creating medicine and the medical field we know today. • 10. Essay On Magnetic Field Summer of 2017 saw UT Southwestern Medical Center make considerable strides in biotech with the development of high frequency alternating magnetic fields to destroy bacterial films on the surfaces of artificial joints in the body simply by heating the joints themselves. These bacterial infections tend to be of great detriment to patients, and they prove impeccably resilient to antibiotics. Since then, that same research has been furthered to prove itself on human test subjects. Now, the U.S. Energy Department illustrates the ability to see bacterial cells magnetic fields via electron microscopy, which marks a milestone both for microscopy and for scientific rendering of magnetic nano objects in liquid and bacterial cell magnetic fields... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we look at samples prepared in the conventional way, we have to make many assumptions about their properties based on their final state, but with the new technique, we can now observe these processes first hand, Prozorov explains. It can help us understand the dynamics of macromolecule aggregation, nanoparticle self assembly, and the effects of electric and magnetic fields on that process. This bears significant implications for biotechnological applications, especially in light of recent research regarding the use of magnetic heating to eradicate bacteria from surfaces within the human body. People get metal parts implanted all the time to compensate for injuries or very old body parts. These pieces range from metal plates to pins to artificial joints, but they all serve relatively similar purposes holding bones together. The problem that comes from this from time to time is that bacteria inside a patient s body eventually find these metal surfaces and seek refuge on or in them. Ordinarily, physicians recommend surgery to get rid of those bacteria, but new research suggests that surgery may no longer be necessary; rather, it may be possible to get the same result with the non invasive alternative of magnetic heating. These bacteria can be very difficult to remove because they form biofilms thin sheets that form a viscous, protective membrane of sorts like plaque on enamel. Even though this only happens to ... • 11. What Is The Situationist Perspective In Lord Of The Flies Dr. Zimbardo uses a situationist perspective on the ways through which anti social behavior is understood, treated and prevented. This view contrasts with the traditional dispositional perspective, which locates evil within individual predispositions and looks at a person s internal factors and traits. The situationist perspective is different in that, unlike the dispositional perspective, it often uses experimental and laboratory research to demonstrate vital phenomena, whereas other perspectives may only use archival or correlational data to suggest such answers. The main example that illustrates through experimental research and social analysis is the ease by which ordinary, good people are induced into behaving in evil ways.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We live in a world cloaked with evil; it is ironic how humans are capable of committing the most heroic, selfless acts and also the most vile and horrific ones. Lord of the Flies and the Psychology of Deindividuation This section is mainly about The Lord of the Flies by William Golding and how it illustrates that one s external physical appearance can lead to a tremendous change in one s mental state. It is really interesting how in the book, once the boys get over the initial moral dilemma of whether to kill a pig and live or whether to let the pig live and die themselves, they have no problem with killing pigs. With every killing, the death of the pig seems to become more brutal and demoralizing. At one point, they even impale the pig with a stick in the anus, proclaiming their deed in horrific valor. This goes back to sexual aggression because it can be viewed as the raping and killing of a female pig. I can justify the gradual ease of killing pigs with an example. My friend, who goes hunting often, told me about how he can manage to kill a dear without feeling bad inside. He said that the actual killing is only hard the first time and that the other times, it is relatively easy because one simply stops thinking about it. One thinks about the deer as the prey, not as an innocent animal minding its own business. As for the experiment with the deindividuated and individuated women, it seems to make a lot of sense ... Ellis. Throughout his whole life he always had this feeling of inferiority. His father barely making enough money to even buy some decent clothes for himself, made Ellis ashamed of what he wore outside. As time passed nothing in his life seemed to go right, he had a child who was blind and retarded, which he loved but was an extra expense, worked day in and day out to barely make ends meet, to at one point getting a heart attack, his whole life was an outright struggle. He needed to blame someone, and so he released his hate on the black community by joining the Ku Klux Klan, to the point that he almost killed two black kids for stealing from a white child. Joining the Klan was a way to become something for himself, he wanted to be heard, he wanted his struggles to go away. Literature Review On Sparse Group Lasso b.Sparse Group Lasso The sparse group lasso is also known as a special case of group lasso that place an additional penalty 1 norm of the coefficient vector. The sparse group lasso allows the overlaps in the groups. The sparse set of group is generated by group lasso. The models in the group if included then all the variables in the group become non zero. Sometimes we like to have both the sparsity of group and within each group, i.e. between and within the group. This literature review examines the recent work of feature selection where feature posses certain group structure. The methods found for group feature selection have discussed here. The general approaches of group feature selection such as group lasso and sparse group lasso are described. The group lasso is an extension of Standard lasso which tend to perform group selection, if the group of features is selected then all the features in the groups are selected. [Screenshot6] And here you have those size options that we looked at earlier and we have got the ability for thumbnail, medium large and as you can see its updated the dimensions so that the width there is always going to be that max width of 300 but the height is the one that s going to change so we don t have disproportionate images because if we uploaded an image and if we wanted a square 300x300 we can t do that with an image of size 1200x630. [Screenshot7] So keep that in mind and I am just going to leave it as a medium by default because this is probably the best way to go when I am adding it to my page. And now I have to do insert post and there it gets inserted, I see that I have got the caption when I go to the actual HTML it s created all of that HTML so caption ID it s giving some mega information there and it s also got a class so size medium so that s where it s getting that max medium of 300. • 17. The Consequences Of Media Bias In The Mass Media Everyday we go through life with the same rituals that we have come accustomed We repeat these daily cycles so often and never realize why we do the things we do, or the reason behind them. We bring up the subject of Media Bias and at most times it seems as if it is an abstract concept. We do not usually see the blindfold that is held over our eyes while we are presented with the news about the world, our neighborhood, and our cities. In my opinion, Media Bias is just a preference automatically set for us based upon many qualities that the viewer audience tend to share. I will provide evidence that shows that we are all victims of Media Bias and that it constantly effects our lives even if we don t know it. Society has a tendency to think that a social issue doesn t have much importance until it hits us personally. A person exposed to a persuasive communication in the mass mediasees this as having a greater effect on others than on himself or herself (Eveland, 2003, pg. 117). This statement proves that people rarely disrupts their daily routines because they believe media tactics aren t directed solely to them. We often feel like we are above whatever situation is currently being played out by the media, but we all still fall short when it comes to getting past it. There are times when the news will give out information pointed towards a specific group that many not have much widespread significance, but they will still report it because they feel that the message ... Here odors arise from the ash pits those images symbolic to James Joyce of the moral decay of his nation. Even the house in which the youthful main character lives adds to the sense of moral decay. The former tenant, a priest (now dead), is shown to have been insensitive to the spiritual needs of his people. His legacy was a collection of books that showed his confusion of the sacred with the secular and there is evidence that he devoted his life to gathering money and furniture. He left behind no evidence of a life of spiritual influence. Despite these discouraging surroundings, the boy is determined to find some evidence of the loveliness his idealistic dreams tell him should exist within the Church. Charles II faced a vast amount of difficulties during his reign, but particularly during the period of 1667 1678. He suffered financial difficulties, foreign policy issues and religious problems. Finance became an obvious problem due to his lack of funds, however his foreign policy was constantly needing money, and a combination of both left Charles with many difficulties. A substantial difficulty that Charles II faced was that of finance. Finance was a major issue between crown and parliament, especially in between the years 1665 to 1667. Charles planned an attack on the Dutch in 1672 with help from the French. This required finance and with the payment of loans, Crown only had an income of ВЈ400,000. So, Charles declared the crown bankrupt, making it harder to secure future loans but making parliament give him ВЈ1.2 million to fund the attack on the Dutch. This shows the foreign policy being the reason for the difficulties faced by Charles, as a lot of the financial concerns were due to the need to fund wars. From 1670 Charles had a new alliance with France and he wanted a third war against the Dutch to avenge the humiliation from the second one. Between the years 1673 1674 saw the Dutch war go badly and it proved costly. This again showed Charles as facing difficulties from the foreign policy as he was too proud to let the war lie, and therefore again need more funding, relying on finance. Charles was forced to sign the treaty of Westminster in 1674, which was to end the conflict and England kept New York, whilst the Dutch kept Surinam. In 1675 Parliament only voted ВЈ300,000 for the Navy, but due to continuing French success against the Dutch, parliament then voted ВЈ600,000. I believe that a hierarchical framework exists in which both distributed and localised modelling can occur at different stages. Distributed modelling occurs at lower hierarchal levels and localised modelling, characterised by grandmother cells, occurs at higher levels. Neurons in higher levels pool information passed on from lower levels to so that the representation of concepts becomes more complex and specialised. It is through this formation of grandmother cells that a visual stimulus can be represented in the brainin an invariant manner. • 33. U.S. Policy on Libyan Chemical Weapons Proliferation Essay U.S. Policy on Libyan Chemical Weapons Proliferation Introduction A legacy of aggression exists between the United States and Libya which pervades every facet of U.S. foreign policy, particularly in the non proliferation arena. The absolute distrust of Revolutionary Leader Colonel Mu ammar Abu Minyar al Qadhafi and his government expressed by U.S. officials has prompted the United States to play the role of policing non proliferation of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, the so called weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), in Libya. As Libya is a party to the Pelindaba Treaty for the establishment of the African nuclear weapon free zone (ANWFZ), it is bound to a commitment of nuclear non proliferation. However, this treaty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The definition of proportionality, however, is difficult to ascertain and the doctrine can only be invoked in the case of attack. Therefore, U.S. use of nuclear weapons in response to the present Libyan production of chemical weapons is unjustifiable. The chemical weapons non proliferation regime boasts a strong treaty in the form of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), but as Libya is not a party to this treaty, its restrictions have no bearing on Libyan chemical weapons production. Libya, therefore, presents a problem in that its chemical weapons production constitutes a world threat, but its actions are fully legal. The Geneva Protocol of 1925 merely prohibits the use of chemical weapons, not their production, stockpiling, or possession. Thus, though U.S. policy options are constrained by its agreements and security assurances, the United States must seek out legal and effective means of ending Libyan production of chemical weapons. Background Libya has long been considered a state threatening the interests of the WMD non proliferation regimes. Though Libya is a non nuclear weapon state party to the NPT, [its] commitment to the accord is suspect because of [its] demonstrated interest in acquiring nuclear arms (Jones 1995:15). This resolution became more suspicious when Libya joined Bhutan and India in casting a negative vote in the overall 158 to 3 vote in favor of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (Jones 1995:16). ... William of Normandy s conquest of the duchy of Aquitaine allowed England to have claim over lands in France. This increased tension between the English king, Edward III, and the French king, Phillip VI, that would inevitably create a war that lasted one hundred and sixteen years (Fiero 175). In a sense, it seems as though it connects to the idea of asymmetric or one way communication. To Ford, he had created the product that virtually anyone would want, but in reality he might have deprived the company of reaching its full potential. In this sense, it could be considered that Ford took a managementperspective that differs from the excellence project or theory that Grunig (1992) spent time researching. Likewise, the Marks and Spencer case seemed to follow Fords idea that we know what the consumer wants, regardless of what they tell us. From the standpoint of someone who has had first hand experience attempting to sell a good or product at the Akron Zoo, I ve found it more effective to take in feedback from the customer or target audience. National Cranberry Case Analysis National Cranberry is a cooperative of berry growers around North America that share common production facilities and for the last several years have been experiencing capacity bottlenecks among other issues. After initial analysis, two main factors that contributed to a decrease in production were found. The first issue in the business is that the supply trucks and drivers delivering the harvest were not properly organized and there was not enough space and organization to allow for smooth offloading of several trucks a day. The second major issue is the rampant absenteeism and need for overtimework based on shortage of workers. This has driven the cost of running the business up and drastically reducing profitability. Nevertheless, some trucks had to wait for up to 3 hours to dump their loads which was solely attributed to the holding bins which could only hold 7200bbls total of both dry and wet berries. Additionally, out of the 27 holding bins, only 11 were actually set up to hold wet berries which made the constrain even more difficult. Once that section of the plant was full there was very little that crews in receiving could do to alleviate the problem. In the next section of the production process, dechaffing was possible at a rate of 4500bbl/hour which over a 12 hour period would be more than enough capacity even on the heaviest barrel deliveries days. Where the bottlenecks really start to become apparent is in the drying stage of the wet berries where only 3 drying stations existed and in a combined effort could only dry at 600bbl/hour. In the harvest of 1980, there was 58% of the total capacity coming in as wet berries which was already over the capacity based on a 12 hour day. In 1981, the harvest in set to bring in 70% of the berries as wet berries which would further slow the overall process. Assuming that the Kiwanee dumpers, dechaffing and de stoning machinery were all working to their full capacity of 4500bbl/hour, the increase to 70% wet berries would overload the driers within the first few hours of production.
