Lottery, the two antagonists push the opposing characters to extreme behaviors. In The Lottery, the
townspeople are convinced they must sacrifice their family members and friends for a healthy crop
season. The lottery has control over the townspeople, and pushes them to extreme measures. In The
Cask of Amontillado, Montresor talks about his hatred of Fortunato: The thousand injuries of
Fortunato I had borne as best as I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge (Poe
617). Montresor stresses that Fortunato has pushed him over the limit.
