Why Is Socrates My Teacher
Socrates was the first Athenian philosopher and he is very interesting figure, not only of his teaching
methods, but also of his whole life and way of thinking. In the centre of Socrates philosophy is human
being but, first of all, he sees a human as moral being. According to Socrates, learning process is
closely connected with relations which will be build between the teacher and a student and he as a
teacher should give to the student all accumulated experience of previous older generations. I want to
have Socrates as my teacher, because of the fact that, all his philosophy and teaching methods are
relevant and important nowadays too, even if he was living in Ancient Greece many years ago.
Unfortunately, today many of us forget about the main aims and principles of life which every of us
had studied in elementary school, such as moral self improvement and as it known, Socrates was one
of the founders of the doctrine of human kindness, about which our ... Show more content on

This quote explains to us Socrates wisdom or so called Socratic paradox. He means by this phrase,
that we must question all what we taught, understand or already know, the doubts is the background of
wisdom and for one hundred percent we can know only that we know nothing, so we need to question
everything. Furthermore, Socrates as philosopher is famous for his work on logic and epistemology.
Epistemology is a part of philosophy about the nature of knowledge and explains what knowledge
exactly is. In addition in today s world people deviate from the norms of morality and forget about
kindness, honesty, tolerance, all are just trying to survive in cruelty and all think only about
themselves. If we will have the teacher as Socrates we can avoid this way of living and became again
more virtuous and kind as it used to be. According to Plato , Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting
a hard battle. But we can

Randall Jarrell
Randall Jarrell s The Knight, Death and the Devil inspired by the 16th century engraving by Albrecht
Dürer is the perfect instance of ekphrasis ( to speak out Greek), which here, verbally represents the
piece of art. This means the poem is quite literally the description of the engraving; which led to the
poet s justified use of hyphenated moderators throughout the poem as a means to apply special
emphasis on visual descriptions. Jarrell s, description of the art object defines his interpretation of the
engraving. Choosing what to describe, in what order and in how much detail, itself constitutes to the
element of interpretation. The adjectives throughout the poem mimic a German extended adjective
construction, which seems a very intelligent

The Execution Of A New Strategy
Execution of a new strategy is always a taxing task. It necessitates the possession of significant
resources, and also a well designed and engaged administrative composition. Good policy will
designate a specific person who or entity who is accountable for implementing the new policy. At the
outset of the execution of a new policy, a group should be identified that can oversee the new strategy
in all pertinent sectors of the organization to assure various efforts within management are
synchronized.
In Jordan, an expansion synchronization team was set up in the governmental bureau that collected
information from each of the government directorates within the kingdom s Education Ministry to
oversee the implementation of diverse programs connected to the education transformation that
included the ICT Plan that the government wished to develop (Ministry of Economics, 2008). In
Singapore, the Educational Technology Division teamed up with divisions within the government s
education ministry in such activities as curriculum preparation, development and training of teachers
in ICT and the execution of their long range and short range plans. In addition, the Ministry of
Education worked closely with the government agencies that are held responsible for the national ICT
grid and for increasing an aggressive ICT industry in Singapore (Coppock, Smith Howell, 2007).

Shamanism in Korea
Shamanism is the oldest and most important religions in Korea. The music, singing and dance
constitute the most prominent components of their ritual (Kut), having a strong influence on Korean
folk music, and is a part of Korean national heritage as well. Interestingly, the scholar Hahn Man
Young, found that the word nongak (famer s band) in Korean, was originally synonymous with kut,
and both practices use similar instruments in their performances. According to the scholar Jongsung
Yang, the believers think their own mistakes trigger bed things happen, displease and offend the god
or the spirits. So they hire shamans (Mudang female shaman, or Paksu male shaman) to communicate
with deities or ghosts. This includes singing or dancing in order to entertain the deities, as an
invitation to possess the shamans, allowing them to answer people s questions, and solve problems. It
becomes a semi religion in contemporary Korea.
The shaman ritual music shows respect to deities or ghosts, by pleasing them in hope of help people
solve their problems; therefore the Shamanic ritual is usually dramatic and improvised. It serves for
the urban life, for the people who need help from the spirit world, thus its music, singing, and dancing
needs to be understood by civilians. Its mystical peculiarities also make significant differences from
other religions: they do not have religion doctrine; no religious ancestor, but they do worship many
deities, even from other religions (such as

The history of Belize dates back thousands of years. The official name of the territory was changed
from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973.
The current government of Belize took form when they declared their independence in 1981. This
government is headed by the Queen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II, who is acting head of
state. The Queen is represented by a Governor General due to her having to reside in Great Britain.
The Governor General is the true authority in power; however, he does not officially run the
government that is led by the Prime Minister and his cabinet. Currently in the Senate there are 12

Science Vs Religion Research Paper
One of the most controversial discussions in human history is between the topics of science and
religion. This discussion spans most of human history with far reaching effects. It has even stretched
into our modern times, leaching into schools and politics. But before one can decide which side to
take, and what views to align with, they require knowledge. Society must understand the similarities
and differences between science and religion.
Science differs immensely from religion in a variety of ways. Science is defined as systematic
knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation.

The Torah was given to us by God, Who is omniscient. Since He knows all that ever is, was, or will
be, it is inconceivable that the Torah wouldn t account for the circumstances of future generations. The
laws of the Torah do not get outdated and discarded and God certainly won t retract the Torah and
replace it with another book. (Numbers 23:19 says that God is not like a human being who might
change his mind.) (Abramowitz) Despite many different religions assertions that they already have
complete and perfect guides to life and understanding the universe, they have been known to change.
One such example is Mormonism. The mormon faith has been known to evolve throughout history in
accordance with changing eras and their social issues. For example In 1890, President Wilford
Woodruff issued the Manifesto, which led to the end of plural marriage in the Church. (www.lds.org)
previously polygamy was regularly practiced in mormon culture. However persecution drove the
Mormons across the country till they were forced to change their standing. Adaptation to social
change is shown often throughout mormon history changing their stance on racism. Brigham Young,
whom BYU was named after made this statement about people of dark

The Deal Made Between The Devil And Dr. Faustus Was Sprouted
The deal made between the devil and Dr. Faustus was sprouted by Faustus inability to believe God
loved him and his rejection of all Christian values. Faustus assumes he can control the devil, but no
one can resist being corrupted by the devil and the powers he has. Although Faustus had numerous
opportunities to turn back and seek redemption, he was dominated by his desire to know and learn
beyond his boundaries. The deal truly isn t beneficial for Faustus after considering the exact nature of
their agreement and he was cautioned against the bargain, showing him the fate that a deal with the
devil will never get you the rewards you re looking for. While Faustus had many important goals he

While Faustus demands power, Mephostophilis is miserable in hell and wants Faustus s soul where the
two make an unfair bargain. Before Doctor Faustus writes the contract for the deal, in his own blood,
Mephostophilis gives him his last chance to change his mind, which is when Faustus decides to
continue with the deal. After the contract is written, Faustus asks Mephostophilis to bring him a wife,
wealth and super powers. While Faustus believes that Mephostophilis will be his servant for the next
24 years before selling his soul, it soon becomes known that it is Faustus who is the servant to Lucifer
and his devil friends.
Faustus believes that he will come out on top in the deal even if it means eternal punishment in the
end. He puts his temporary pleasures before his fate which shows how impatient and unhappy he
really is. Even when God reaches out to Faustus through the Good Angel , Faustus puts all his trust
into Lucifer. He says, When Mephostophilis shall stand by me, What God can hurt thee, Faustus?
Thou art safe (Act 1 Scene 5. Lines 24 25). Faustus clearly does not value his own soul and does not
reflect on why the devil would want it. Dr. Faustus is deceived about what making a deal with the
devil will encompass. He tells Mephostophilis, Had I as many souls as there be stars, I d give them all
for Mephostophilis. By him I ll be great emperor of the world (Act 1 Scene 3. Lines 101 103).

Tropa De Elite Sociology
It is therefore possible to define BOPE as being in a state of exception and every resident of the
favelas as a homo sacer because they are stripped of their social and political value. Moreover, the
characters are also used in order to express, how fear negatively influences society and forces some
people to radically change their character. Tropa de Elite (2007) starts off with a very important quote
by Stanley Milgram: A psicologia social desde século nos ensinou uma importante lição: usualmente
não é o caráter de uma pessoa que determina como ela age, mas sim a situação na quai ela se encontra
(Tropa de Elite, 2007). In other words, the environment plays a key role in influencing people s
behaviour. In Padilha s film, proof of this statement is offered through André Matias. At the beginning
of the movie, he is seen attempting to be an honest and incorruptible police officer. However, after
having spent a few months with BOPE, his character is quick to change. According to Heise, his
exposure to the chaos and violence of Rio de Janeiro triggered a dehumanization process and this is
especially portrayed through André s abuse of power during his classmates march against violence
(2012, p.125) and when he shoots Baiano in the face. These actions ... Show more content on

the elite neighbourhoods and the favelas. The fast pace of filming, the use of energetic rap music

Similarities Between Medea And Antigone
Medea and Antigone are very determined people who will get what they want no matter what. In the
play, Antigone defies the king and buries her brother at night. She says You may do what you like
since apparently the law of gods mean nothing to you to Ismene which clearly states that she is doing
it for spiritual reasons. For if she does not, Polyneices will not be accepted into heaven. Medea allows
her sons to be killed and purposely kills Creon s daughter to spite her husband. She is driven by her
desire for revenge and her heart has been poisoned by the betrayal from Jason. Love and infatuation
also plays a big role in both stories. Antigone s love for her brother caused her to bury him whereas
Medea killed people because of her infatuation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Antigone was more level headed than her. They both chose moral law over civil law which meant they
took matters into their own hands and thought what they were doing was righteous. That lead to their
downfall. The consequence of burying Polyneices was Antigone hanging herself which lead to the self
destruction of Haemus, Antigone s fiance, and Eurydice, Creon s wife. Medea s behavior was
groundless; as a result, her brother was killed as were her sons along with Glauce, Jason s new lover.
Innocent people died because of the main character s foolish decisions. Today that still happens,
blameless people die because of someone s thoughtless intentions. Terrorists murder hundreds of
individuals who least likely deserve it; Naive, little kids get caught in a massacre such as the one that
happened in Sandy Hook Elementary School in which 27 people died. In Euripides s play, Medea
wasn t punished at all; but, in Sophocles s play, Antigone commits suicide. Medea was a sadistic
person who deserved to be punished and the punishment would have been justified but in the end, she
got to have her happily ever after. Situations like that have happened in this decade before and will
continue to happen. Innocent people get killed and the bad ones get to live a merry life. Many factors
determine what happens to an individual: social class, wealth, and power. All three can influence a
corrupt person. If someone was rich or very powerful, they d live and be used for ransom or
befriended so the corrupt person could manipulate them;however, a poor person would be killed

Analysis Of The Poem Charge Of The Light Brigade And ...
While both Alfred Lord Tennyson and Wilfred Owen describe war in great detail in their works
Charge of the Light Brigade and Dulce Et Decorum Est, respectively, Tennyson describes the courage
and honor of warfare, whereas Owen goes into more detail about the horrors and atrocities that go
hand in hand with war. Tennyson describes a battle in which 600 bold and courageous men storm a
valley, which he refers to as the Valley of Death (line 7), to meet their almost inevitable death. Owen
in his Dulce et Decorum Est, describes a scene from World War I in which soldiers are bombarded
with gas shells. In this essay I will argue that despite their differing subjects and themes, both
Tennyson and Owen s work prove that the honor and courage of the soldiers comes directly from the
hardships they must endure. The fact that the men knew the dangers of fighting the battle and knew
that they were facing death is the factor in which Tennyson draws the theme of courage. In line 23, he
states: Boldly they rode and well, into the Jaws of Death (lines 23 4). In order to describe the
experience of war throughout his work, Alfred Lord Tennyson describes the courage of the 600 men
who rode into the Jaws of Death, to fight for victory even though they were facing inevitable death.
Although they fight valiantly, they are eventually ransacked by the gun fire of their opposition. The
600 are forced to retreat back from the valley, where even more men are killed. Also, by using the

Infantile Autism Essay
What is Autism? Did you know, according to CCN, about sixty eight children has Autism Spectrum
Disorder (ASD)? ASD, also known as autism, is a brain disorder that interferes with a person s
behavior and/or interactions with others. The word autism, which has been in use for about 100 years,
comes from the Greek word autos, meaning self. The term describes conditions in which a person is
removed from social interaction hence, an isolated self (WedMD). Autism itself is often called autistic
disorder , childhood autism , or infantile autism . It appears in infancy and early childhood, causing

The word Autism was first used in 1908 to describe schizophrenia, a brain disorder in which people
interpret reality abnormally, people who were self absorbed or cocky. In 1943, Dr. Leo Kenner was the
first to used Autism for kids who were highly intelligent but did not want to interact with others, he
called this early infantile autism. In 1950, Bruno Bettelhiem, a child development specialist, viewed
autism was being caused by emotionally cold and distanced mothers. This became known as the
Refrigerator Mother Theory . The Refrigerator Mother Theory is when a mother does not interact, or
play, with the child at all, causing the child to be fridged ( David E. Simpson, J.J. Hanley, and Gordon
Quinn in the film History of Autism Blame ). In 1987, The DSM ( Dianostic and Statistical Manual of
Matal Disorders) replaced infantile autism with autism disorder . Around this time, researchers used to
think the cause of autism was due to bad parenting. Not only that, the federal government made autism
a special education category. This allowed public schools to start knowing children with autism and
offer them special services. Some children would be sent to foster care to see if they would recover
back then, By this time, many researchers were convinced that the basic reasons were to be found in
neurological disturbances, sometimes combined with hereditary illnesses like tuberous sclerosis,
metabolic disturbances like PKU or chromosomal aberrations such as fragile X chromosome (Certec).
In 1994, the National Alliance for Autism Research and Cure Autism Now raised awareness about
ASD. Later on that year, researchers began to believe that the cause of autism was due to mercury in
vaccines. This lead to vaccine makers to stop making thimerosal, a vaccine that is made of mainly
mercury. In 2001, the National Institute of Health could not find

Questions On Organizational Communication Concepts Essay
1. The movie I chose for this assignment is The Terminal.
2 Three Organizational Communication Concepts:
Organizational Cultural Elements: According to Keyton (n.d.), organizational culture is defined as the
set of artifacts, values and assumptions that emerges from the interactions of organizational members
(p. 550). Some examples of artifacts and values include, norms, customs, how members should
behave, and assumptions are revealed when talking about your work experiences. The culture of an
organization can be simply what it feels like to be there (Keyton, n.d.). Every culture is dynamic,
always changing and guides the construction of reality in a social community. There are 7 elements of
culture which include metaphors, rituals, stories, artifacts, heroes and heroines, performances and
values (class notes, Oct. 25). In the movie The Terminal the culture is constantly changing and when
Viktor Navorski arrives, just his presence and the things he does changes the culture of the terminal
and those people that he comes in contact with. One element is artifacts, this can include how he
gathers the carts and puts them back to get the quarters. When I think of artifacts I think of how he
remodeled the space where he is living; gate 67. He added a plant and a wheel chair with a blanket and
made his space his home. He made one area like a restaurant when he had dinner with Amelia. The
restaurants, stores, customs office etc. are all elements of artifacts. In the movie

The Link Between An F Oversupply And Cdr
To analyze the link between an F oversupply and CDR, in situ analyses were conducted in a 400 km²
area near Kaduna City, Nigeria (see Fig. 2 1), where endemic cases of active CDR have been reported
since the early 2000s, with a prevalence rate of 5.0% (HVCF 2010). Epidemiological studies in
this area revealed that compared to a control group of peers who live in the same region, the cases
show a lack of Ca in the blood (1.90 vs. 2.19 mmol L 1) as well as significantly higher 1.25(OH)2D
serum levels (442 vs. 347 pmol L 1). The 25(OH)D levels are normal within both groups (46 vs. 57
nmol L 1), which overall is a typical sign for CDR and not for vitamin D deficiency rickets. Although
no clinical signs of either dental or skeletal fluorosis were found in any of the CDR affected children,
biochemical measurements on the F concentrations in the serum of the CDR affected children in the
Kaduna area are still missing, and as a result, an underlying fluorosis disease cannot entirely be
excluded (Emmert 2010). The study area is located in the north central of Nigeria, where the
climate is affected by the annual shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The mean annual
precipitation rate in this area amounts to 1300 mm, and the average annual temperature is 25.6 °C
(Wall 1979). The natural vegetation is the savanna trees and grasslands of the northern guinea
savanna, which nowadays has mostly been deforested in favor of agricultural use (Blair Rains et al.
1977).

Australian Film Industry
Wither The Australian Film Industry?
After I moved to Australia at the hindsight of this year, I happened to make an argument to myself in

past two decades.

No place in Australia is truly its representative. Which means that the things that are identifiably
Australian are quite limited. Dr. John s in his lectures highlighted the cultural differences quite a bit
and I completely agree with his views. The main themes that resonated in the past have in some ways
been discredited and with others yet to take their place. To a large extent the cultural language has
been lost. The consequences of internationalism and globalisation have separated the Australian
population from the national cinema market. This disturbance has provoked a change in the nature of
government funding, dominant film institutions and Australian audiences. These changes mean that
the Australian national cinema must reassess funding policies and the new sphere of public influence

1920 American Gangsters
Gangs have existed in the United States for over 200 years. It all started when the first immigrants
came to the U.S.A. Most of them came for a better life but many of them ended up in poverty. The
first gangs were formed among poor adolescents who grouped together for the sake of socialisation
and protection. They were of the same race or the same ethnic background. The first known gang
specialized in crimes was called The Five Points . They consisted of Irish immigrants and was
established in New York City. They dressed in a specific way and used monikers or nicknames.
Another early gang were the Forty Thieves . Their gang leader was Edward Coleman and they formed
in 1826. New York City s early gangs had an easy time of it because of ... Show more content on

While they might sport the tattoos, the jackets, colors, and signs, often these members are only
tangentially affiliated. According to much of the available literature, tattoos also serve as a badge of
protection against coercion from other gangs (Jackson and McBride 1985). In the current study,
tattoos signify a number of different and personal matters, only one of which gang membership and a
warning to others. At any rate, it is very clear that some youths engage in more gang activity than
others; some might be called the wannabes who move out of the influence of the gang on the basis of
whether or not a program of interest intercepts drawing them completely away from the gang. Within
the wannabes there are many little brothers and sisters, sometimes referred to as pee wees. However,
on separate and certain occasions they are sent home by their older siblings when something was
about to happen for which only older members were being mobilized. Moreover, I am going to go into
explicit detail on two Hispanic gangs The Mexican Mafia, the Nuestra Familia, and the Latin Kings.
The Mexican Mafia started in late 1957. Gangs that participate in the Mexican Mafia (EME) politics
and put to work for the gang on and off the street are given a red light . They are not to be assaulted.

History Of Kosovo Essay
The Balance of Power Theory and It s Application to Kosovo
Ideas are the corner stones of International Relations and Diplomacy. These ideas are often titled
theories, a term that grants the ideas a certain degree of credibility in application, though they remain
theories; they cannot be proved., only applied intelligently in hopes of arriving at the correct
conclusion. One theory concerning the Balance of Power (BOP) falls under the Neo Realist analysis

2. States do not truly have common interests. If this were true, there would be no need for
supranational organizations, and supranationally binding treaties would also be unnecessary, as
interests would be tacitly agreed on.
Neo Realism, as a result of the cold war, is marked by more a modern view of International Relations,
i.e. whereas Classicists would insist that a Balance of Power theory is what keeps the world from the

1.B. Balance of Power Theory
The BOP Theory states that having a balance of power establishes equilibrium. Anarchy generally
equals insecurity, and insecurity and conflicts of interest are what produce constant competition
between states. In order to ease competition states seek allies and military power, which leads to a
balance of power. This formulation is a consequence of twentieth century war and state history, and
must be modified to be applied to different times periods. Medievally, this power structure would have

(Act I, scene V, lines 44 45)
In Macbeth, William Shakespeare writes this passage in order to shape the character of Lady Macbeth.
Using only this line, the reader can almost determine Lady Macbeth s personality and her motives.
Up to the point where this quote leaves off, we have not heard much of Lady Macbeth. When she
receives the letter from Macbeth, it seems her fascination is not directed at her husband, but at her
husband s newly attained power. It is evident that the first impression of Lady Macbeth is negative.

By now, we are able to recognize Lady Macbeth s nature. Her thoughts are bombarded with dark
images and her mind is set on the murder of the King.
Finally, in the last and most significant part of the sentence Lady Macbeth says, unsex me here. In
context, she wants the spirits to come and take away her soft, feminine characteristics. She feels that
her husband is too nice to get the greatness he is promised, and the only way he can succeed is if she
helps him. From what we have seen, Lady Macbeth seems to be the man of the house. She is willing
to do anything that is necessary in order for her to be queen, including murder. She is also quite smart,
she knows that her husband tends to be passive, and is not about to give up on him now. In the first
half of the novel, Lady Macbeth is the brain behind the operation. She not only provides the actual
plan, but encourages her husband as well. During the period the novel was written, women were
considered to be submissive. However in her case, she is so influential that Macbeth is even persuaded
by her.
To help convince Macbeth not to call the murder off, Lady Macbeth questions his manhood. She says,
When you durst do it, then you were a man;/ And to be more than what you were, you would/ Be so

Why Is John D Rockefeller Unethical
By 1937 John D. Rockefeller was the richest man in all of US history at a net worth of 340 Billion
dollars in today s money which is more than three times the net worth of the current richest person
alive: Jeff Bezos, who has a net worth of about 100 billion US dollars. John D. Rockefeller had
created a large monopoly in producing, refining, transporting, and marketing oil which allowed him
the ability to acquire such a large amount of business and therefore profits( John D. Rockefeller Forms

With the discovering of oil in Titusville, Pennsylvania the area began to grow at unprecedented rates
enlightening Rockefeller to the idea of starting an oil company (Rockefeller). Refining oil was a very
simple and easy process that had huge profits at the start of its discovery which lead to a surplus of oil
refiners. This surplus of oil refiners had more oil than what could be consumed in the U.S alone.
Profits were dropping as competition increased and there seemed to be no hope for the industry. John
D. Rockefeller found that the only way to enlarge the market and improve their methods of
manufacturing was by increasing their capital. With this idea in mind Rockefeller bought the largest
and best refiners and then proceeded to centralize their management in hopes of better efficiency and
economy he would come to name this business Standard Oil ( Rockefeller, John D. ). At this point
Rockefeller was a successful businessman but nothing in comparison to what he was to become.
Rockefeller decided that he would buy out another large shareholder of Standard Oil due to their lack
of ambition to want to expand Standard oil further than it currently was. Rockefeller later wrote that
buying out the Clark s was the day that determined my career (John, D. Rockefeller) . After further
expansion Standard oil was producing 505 barrels of oil a day which was more than twice that capable
of any other local competitors ( John Davison Rockefeller. ). Before Standard Oil was capable of
accomplishing such a task they first out performed or merged with other oil refiners in their area. This
process is called horizontal integration. With the expansion of Standard Oil, Rockefeller was able to
negotiate prices with railroads making them competitive as ever ( John D. Rockefeller Forms the
Standard Oil Trust: 1882. ). The next step in Standard Oil was vertical integration. Vertical integration

Characterization Of Cin1
Given the conserved nature of intracellular trafficking, Cin1 appears to be unique to Cn, as a Cin1
homolog was not found in Sc nor Ca. Likewise, a Pan1 homologs was not found in Cn. However, by
reciprocal BLASTp search, several proteins with significant homologies to proteins participating in Sc
and Ca Pan1 pathways were identified {Wang, 2011 #5646}. Among them, an EH protein homologous
to Sc Ede1 was selected for further analysis as Sc Ede1 is one of the key partners of Pan1.
Characterization of the Cn Ede1 homolog and examination of its interaction with Cin1 will reveal
whether Cin1 mediates the only endocytic pathway or there are additional endocytic pathways in Cn.

terminal ubiquitin associated (UBA) domain. An ede1 mutant has been generated in preparation for
this proposal, and the initial examination indicated that the ede1 mutant has a defect in early
endocytosis while maintaining normal morphology (Fig. 4B), suggesting functional similarity to Sc
Ede1. A WT gene complemented strain (ede1 EDE1) will be generated and further phenotypic
characterization for growth, mating, endocytic transport, and virulence characteristics will be
performed. An ede1 cin1 double knockout mutant will also be generated through a second knockout
approach. The double mutant strain will be compared to single gene knockout strains if obtained. To
examine Cin1 and Ede1 interaction, a yeast two hybrid (Y2H) screen will be performed first, followed
by validation with co immunoprecipitation (IP). Here, only the fusion constructs specific to Ede1

massive companies like Google and Facebook dictate the current state of the internet in order to

Essay about The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt
The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt
Sinclair Lewis Babbitt portrayed a man bent on following his political party; his actions seemingly
followed that religiously, and today s version of the Republican Party is proof that we are not too far
off from Lewis version, despite the expanse of time. George Babbitt, the main character in Lewis
novel, viewed the world in the eyes of a businessman. He saw immigrants as a waste to society,
business and the means to survive, and the ability to own the latest and greatest inventions as top
priorities in his life. One must, in the 1920s and well as in today s world, set themselves in a political
affiliation, generally one that describes the person and how he is. To ... Show more content on

Babbitt was just the icon of the Republican viewpoint.
Lewis probed into the Republican policies in order to write a character about them. Babbitt attempted
a change, a way of rebelling against his mechanical lifestyle, which one could view as someone s
break of the political system. It was too hard for him though, as his friends pressured him to join the
Good Citizens League and end this crazy rebellion. His downfall inevitably came over his wife s
operation, and he began to preach, the crimes of labor unions, the perils of immigration, and the
delights of golf, morality, and bank accounts (Lewis 368) more than ever. Lewis hinted through that
statement that the Good Citizens League was little more than a political club, or more specifically, an
offshoot of the Republican Party itself. Once again, Babbitt reflects the party s actions and policies in
what he speaks about, also saying a great deal about who was part of that party.
If the party was like that over seventy five years ago, and many would consider such thoughts corrupt,
the Republican Party surely must have changed over such a long time. The success of the Democrats
during the Great Depression and World War II led many to believe that the Republican Party was the
cause of the Great Depression. Its policies certainly would direct themselves toward the contrary yet
still the blame rested on them. The blame still rested

The Love Triangle in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Love is an exploding cigar we willingly smoke. (Barry). Like Lynda Barry said love is like a ticking
time bomb just waiting for the right time to blow someone s face off. For example, in both William
Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet and William Goldman s The Princess Bride there are many
similarities between protagonists, antagonists, and their love. Many people are dead in these two
stories now because of their harmful love. Love drives these stories and pushes people to the point of
suicide.
In Romeo and Juliet the two lovebirds sadly fell to the disease of love. Romeo and Juliet were so
much in love that they were both willing to die for each other. Juliet wasn t going to marry the Count
Paris so she went into a deep sleep almost similar to a coma. As a result, Romeo thought that Juliet
was dead because the news did not get to Romeo so he poisoned himself next to Juliet. When Juliet
arose, she found Romeo dead next to her coffin.
Much like Romeo and Juliet, The Princess Bride characters were prisoners of love. Westley and
Buttercup were in great love but had to separate when Westley left for the Americas to start a better
life and then go back to Florin to marry Buttercup. However, as Westley was supposedly killed by the
Dread Pirate Roberts, Buttercup was forced to marry Prince Humperdinck. The Prince hired three men
to murder the princess and try to start a war with Guilder. Prince Humperdinck s plans were ruined
when Westley snuck up on the three men

The Culture And Business Practices Of Japan

that many foreign countries never do start business in Japan (or enter the market through a distributor)

For example, if your shift is at 9 A.M. you are expected to be dressed, clocked in, and at your desk
before that time (Nozu). Also, in every situation you find yourself in, you should be aware of how
people are perceiving you, as this is extremely important to the Japanese. It is very common for the
Japanese to go out after work to bars, karaoke s, or restaurants. If you are invited you should make an
effort to go, as good relationships with those whom you work with are important. The well being of
the group is always placed above the individual in their culture. If a Japanese business is not doing
well the CEO would cut his own pay so that it could be fairly distributed to his employees. Things like
this, that we may not see in Western business practices, are all part of the unified country of Japan.
Family Life
As the Japanese are very social and place a lot of emphasis on strong bonds, family is extremely
important. Families in Japan are referred to as ie and are all registered to the same koseki or official
government document (Bestor). The structure is very similar that seen in Western culture where the
mother, father, and children reside together. It is common for older relatives to live with a family, and
if they do not, there is an old saying that even if an extended family does not live together, parents and
grandparents should live near enough to carry over a bowl of hot

A Marxist Reading of Native Son
In the Communist Manifesto Karl Marx states clearly that history is a series of class struggles over the
means of production. Whoever controls the means of production also controls society and is able to
force their set of ideas and beliefs onto the lower class. The present dominant class ideology is, as it
has been since the writing of the United States Constitution, the ideology of the upper class, Anglo
Saxon male. Obviously, when the framers spoke of equality for all, they meant for all land owning
white men. The words of the Declaration of Independence, also written by upper class, Anglo
American males, are clear: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are rights necessary to each

The need for love and belonging is third and manifests in the drive to establish affectionate
relationships or create a sense of community. Fourth in the hierarchy are the esteem needs, which
Maslow divides into two parts: the need for the respect of others, and the need for self respect
(Boeree). The fifth and final stage in Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs forms the pinnacle and is
identified as self actualization or the desire for self fulfillment . . . to become everything one is capable
of becoming (Green). According to Maslow s theoy, the order in which these needs appear in the
hierarchy is the order in which humans must attain them. Needs higher in the hierarchy cannot be

needs is not met, a deficit need is created, causing negative effects on the human psychology, a
phenomenon seen in the main character of Native Son, Bigger Thomas. Maslow believes that in a
good society each individual is free to accomplish his or her goals and move freely through the

Relationship Between Cherry Stepwood And Hedda Gabler

Balancing True Love
The male female relationships in Ibsen s play Hedda Gabler, and Chekhov s play The Cherry Orchard
show the women partners as incapable of the mutual respect and understanding necessary for a
sustained and fulfilling committed relationship. Hedda, Thea, Madame,Varya, and even young Anya
cannot enter or maintain a marriage because each of them have not yet self actualized. None of the
relationships in the plays offer any type of fulfillment. The two writers are alike in the way that their
portrayals pose these two questions: What may a woman give and receive from her partner/husband if
she herself lacks self nourishment and balance? Societal expectations and, in the case of the The
Cherry Orchard, an aristocracy losing its wealth and power precipitate each woman s crisis. For any
healthy relationship to last, both partners have to be fully committed to each other. In both plays, none
of the relationships really offer any type of fulfillment. The title of Hedda Gabler, uses Hedda s
maiden name, Gabler, even though her married name is Hedda Tesman. Based off of the initial reading
of the title, one can already tell that there is a strong intention behind it. Isben purposely wrote the title
that way to indicate that Hedda wanted to be recognized as her father s daughter, not as her husband s
wife. This already proves that she is not fully in love with her husband and there is more that is going

The Deal Made Between The Devil And Dr. Faustus Was Sprouted The deal made between the devil and Dr. Faustus was sprouted by Faustus inability to believe God loved him and his rejection of all Christian values. Faustus assumes he can control the devil, but no one can resist being corrupted by the devil and the powers he has. Although Faustus had numerous opportunities to turn back and seek redemption, he was dominated by his desire to know and learn beyond his boundaries. The deal truly isn t beneficial for Faustus after considering the exact nature of their agreement and he was cautioned against the bargain, showing him the fate that a deal with the devil will never get you the rewards you re looking for. After the contract is written, Faustus asks Mephostophilis to bring him a wife, wealth and super powers. While Faustus believes that Mephostophilis will be his servant for the next 24 years before selling his soul, it soon becomes known that it is Faustus who is the servant to Lucifer and his devil friends. Faustus believes that he will come out on top in the deal even if it means eternal punishment in the end. He puts his temporary pleasures before his fate which shows how impatient and unhappy he really is. Even when God reaches out to Faustus through the Good Angel , Faustus puts all his trust into Lucifer. He says, When Mephostophilis shall stand by me, What God can hurt thee, Faustus? Thou art safe (Act 1 Scene 5. Lines 24 25). Faustus clearly does not value his own soul and does not reflect on why the devil would want it. Moreover, the characters are also used in order to express, how fear negatively influences society and forces some people to radically change their character. Tropa de Elite (2007) starts off with a very important quote by Stanley Milgram: A psicologia social desde século nos ensinou uma importante lição: usualmente não é o caráter de uma pessoa que determina como ela age, mas sim a situação na quai ela se encontra (Tropa de Elite, 2007). In other words, the environment plays a key role in influencing people s behaviour. In Padilha s film, proof of this statement is offered through André Matias. At the beginning of the movie, he is seen attempting to be an honest and incorruptible police officer. However, after having spent a few months with BOPE, his character is quick to change. According to Heise, his exposure to the chaos and violence of Rio de Janeiro triggered a dehumanization process and this is especially portrayed through André s abuse of power during his classmates march against violence (2012, p.125) and when he shoots Baiano in the face. • 13. Analysis Of The Poem Charge Of The Light Brigade And ... While both Alfred Lord Tennyson and Wilfred Owen describe war in great detail in their works Charge of the Light Brigade and Dulce Et Decorum Est, respectively, Tennyson describes the courage and honor of warfare, whereas Owen goes into more detail about the horrors and atrocities that go hand in hand with war. Tennyson describes a battle in which 600 bold and courageous men storm a valley, which he refers to as the Valley of Death (line 7), to meet their almost inevitable death. Owen in his Dulce et Decorum Est, describes a scene from World War I in which soldiers are bombarded with gas shells. In this essay I will argue that despite their differing subjects and themes, both Tennyson and Owen s work prove that the honor and courage of the soldiers comes directly from the hardships they must endure. The fact that the men knew the dangers of fighting the battle and knew that they were facing death is the factor in which Tennyson draws the theme of courage. In line 23, he states: Boldly they rode and well, into the Jaws of Death (lines 23 4). In order to describe the experience of war throughout his work, Alfred Lord Tennyson describes the courage of the 600 men who rode into the Jaws of Death, to fight for victory even though they were facing inevitable death. Although they fight valiantly, they are eventually ransacked by the gun fire of their opposition. The 600 are forced to retreat back from the valley, where even more men are killed. ASD, also known as autism, is a brain disorder that interferes with a person s behavior and/or interactions with others. The term describes conditions in which a person is removed from social interaction hence, an isolated self (WedMD). The word Autism was first used in 1908 to describe schizophrenia, a brain disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally, people who were self absorbed or cocky. In 1943, Dr. Leo Kenner was the first to used Autism for kids who were highly intelligent but did not want to interact with others, he called this early infantile autism. In 1950, Bruno Bettelhiem, a child development specialist, viewed autism was being caused by emotionally cold and distanced mothers. This became known as the Refrigerator Mother Theory . The Refrigerator Mother Theory is when a mother does not interact, or play, with the child at all, causing the child to be fridged ( David E. Simpson, J.J. Hanley, and Gordon Quinn in the film History of Autism Blame ). In 1987, The DSM ( Dianostic and Statistical Manual of Matal Disorders) replaced infantile autism with autism disorder . Around this time, researchers used to think the cause of autism was due to bad parenting. Not only that, the federal government made autism a special education category. This allowed public schools to start knowing children with autism and offer them special services. Some children would be sent to foster care to see if they would recover back then, By this time, many researchers were convinced that the basic reasons were to be found in neurological disturbances, sometimes combined with hereditary illnesses like tuberous sclerosis, metabolic disturbances like PKU or chromosomal aberrations such as fragile X chromosome (Certec). In 1994, the National Alliance for Autism Research and Cure Autism Now raised awareness about ASD. Later on that year, researchers began to believe that the cause of autism was due to mercury in vaccines. The movie I chose for this assignment is The Terminal. 2 Three Organizational Communication Concepts: Organizational Cultural Elements: According to Keyton (n.d.), organizational culture is defined as the set of artifacts, values and assumptions that emerges from the interactions of organizational members (p. 550). Some examples of artifacts and values include, norms, customs, how members should behave, and assumptions are revealed when talking about your work experiences. The culture of an organization can be simply what it feels like to be there (Keyton, n.d.). Every culture is dynamic, always changing and guides the construction of reality in a social community. There are 7 elements of culture which include metaphors, rituals, stories, artifacts, heroes and heroines, performances and values (class notes, Oct. 25). In the movie The Terminal the culture is constantly changing and when Viktor Navorski arrives, just his presence and the things he does changes the culture of the terminal and those people that he comes in contact with. One element is artifacts, this can include how he gathers the carts and puts them back to get the quarters. When I think of artifacts I think of how he remodeled the space where he is living; gate 67. He added a plant and a wheel chair with a blanket and made his space his home. Epidemiological studies in this area revealed that compared to a control group of peers who live in the same region, the cases show a lack of Ca in the blood (1.90 vs. 2.19 mmol L 1) as well as significantly higher 1.25(OH)2D serum levels (442 vs. 347 pmol L 1). The 25(OH)D levels are normal within both groups (46 vs. 57 nmol L 1), which overall is a typical sign for CDR and not for vitamin D deficiency rickets. Although no clinical signs of either dental or skeletal fluorosis were found in any of the CDR affected children, biochemical measurements on the F concentrations in the serum of the CDR affected children in the Kaduna area are still missing, and as a result, an underlying fluorosis disease cannot entirely be excluded (Emmert 2010). • 28. Essay about The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt The Republican Party in Sinclair Lewis Babbitt Sinclair Lewis Babbitt portrayed a man bent on following his political party; his actions seemingly followed that religiously, and today s version of the Republican Party is proof that we are not too far off from Lewis version, despite the expanse of time. George Babbitt, the main character in Lewis novel, viewed the world in the eyes of a businessman. He saw immigrants as a waste to society, business and the means to survive, and the ability to own the latest and greatest inventions as top priorities in his life. One must, in the 1920s and well as in today s world, set themselves in a political affiliation, generally one that describes the person and how he is. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Babbitt was just the icon of the Republican viewpoint. Lewis probed into the Republican policies in order to write a character about them. Babbitt attempted a change, a way of rebelling against his mechanical lifestyle, which one could view as someone s break of the political system. It was too hard for him though, as his friends pressured him to join the Good Citizens League and end this crazy rebellion. His downfall inevitably came over his wife s operation, and he began to preach, the crimes of labor unions, the perils of immigration, and the delights of golf, morality, and bank accounts (Lewis 368) more than ever. Lewis hinted through that statement that the Good Citizens League was little more than a political club, or more specifically, an offshoot of the Republican Party itself. Once again, Babbitt reflects the party s actions and policies in what he speaks about, also saying a great deal about who was part of that party. If the party was like that over seventy five years ago, and many would consider such thoughts corrupt, the Republican Party surely must have changed over such a long time. The success of the Democrats during the Great Depression and World War II led many to believe that the Republican Party was the cause of the Great Depression. Its policies certainly would direct themselves toward the contrary yet still the blame rested on them. The blame still rested ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. The Love Triangle in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Love is an exploding cigar we willingly smoke. (Barry). Like Lynda Barry said love is like a ticking time bomb just waiting for the right time to blow someone s face off. For example, in both William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet and William Goldman s The Princess Bride there are many similarities between protagonists, antagonists, and their love. Many people are dead in these two stories now because of their harmful love. Love drives these stories and pushes people to the point of suicide. In Romeo and Juliet the two lovebirds sadly fell to the disease of love. Romeo and Juliet were so much in love that they were both willing to die for each other. Juliet wasn t going to marry the Count Paris so she went into a deep sleep almost similar to a coma. As a result, Romeo thought that Juliet was dead because the news did not get to Romeo so he poisoned himself next to Juliet. When Juliet arose, she found Romeo dead next to her coffin. Much like Romeo and Juliet, The Princess Bride characters were prisoners of love. Westley and Buttercup were in great love but had to separate when Westley left for the Americas to start a better life and then go back to Florin to marry Buttercup. However, as Westley was supposedly killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts, Buttercup was forced to marry Prince Humperdinck. The Prince hired three men to murder the princess and try to start a war with Guilder. Prince Humperdinck s plans were ruined when Westley snuck up on the three men ... By conducting research by utilizing the World Wide Web and an informative interview by Sensei Mako Nozu, we have gathered substantial information about the culture and business practices of Japan. We feel as if our knowledge has equipped us to succeed in this widely misunderstood market. Venture Japan stated that many foreign countries never do start business in Japan (or enter the market through a distributor) because of the misconception, fueled by those infamous myths of doing business in Japan, that dealing with the Japanese business culture is somehow too risky (Venture Japan). Also, in every situation you find yourself in, you should be aware of how people are perceiving you, as this is extremely important to the Japanese. It is very common for the Japanese to go out after work to bars, karaoke s, or restaurants. If you are invited you should make an effort to go, as good relationships with those whom you work with are important. The well being of the group is always placed above the individual in their culture. If a Japanese business is not doing well the CEO would cut his own pay so that it could be fairly distributed to his employees. Things like this, that we may not see in Western business practices, are all part of the unified country of Japan. Family Life As the Japanese are very social and place a lot of emphasis on strong bonds, family is extremely important. Families in Japan are referred to as ie and are all registered to the same koseki or official government document (Bestor). The structure is very similar that seen in Western culture where the mother, father, and children reside together. It is common for older relatives to live with a family, and if they do not, there is an old saying that even if an extended family does not live together, parents and grandparents should live near enough to carry over a bowl of hot ... • 32. A Marxist Reading of Native Son Essay A Marxist Reading of Native Son In the Communist Manifesto Karl Marx states clearly that history is a series of class struggles over the means of production. Whoever controls the means of production also controls society and is able to force their set of ideas and beliefs onto the lower class. The present dominant class ideology is, as it has been since the writing of the United States Constitution, the ideology of the upper class, Anglo Saxon male. Obviously, when the framers spoke of equality for all, they meant for all land owning white men. The words of the Declaration of Independence, also written by upper class, Anglo American males, are clear: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are rights necessary to each human ... Fourth in the hierarchy are the esteem needs, which Maslow divides into two parts: the need for the respect of others, and the need for self respect (Boeree). The fifth and final stage in Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs forms the pinnacle and is identified as self actualization or the desire for self fulfillment . . . to become everything one is capable of becoming (Green). According to Maslow s theoy, the order in which these needs appear in the hierarchy is the order in which humans must attain them. Needs higher in the hierarchy cannot be attained without first satisfying the more basic needs at the base (Boeree). When any level of these needs is not met, a deficit need is created, causing negative effects on the human psychology, a phenomenon seen in the main character of Native Son, Bigger Thomas. Maslow believes that in a good society each individual is free to accomplish his or her goals and move freely through the hierarchy (Boeree). But for a poor black man, like Bigger Thomas, who lives in a society where the dominant class ideology and the social structure hinder rather than support attaining self actualization, it is almost impossible to reach the pinnacle of the hierarchy. The dominant class ideology has caged Bigger politically, economically, racially, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Relationship Between Cherry Stepwood And Hedda Gabler Mackenzie Sullivan ENG 202 12/10/2017 Balancing True Love The male female relationships in Ibsen s play Hedda Gabler, and Chekhov s play The Cherry Orchard show the women partners as incapable of the mutual respect and understanding necessary for a sustained and fulfilling committed relationship. Hedda, Thea, Madame,Varya, and even young Anya cannot enter or maintain a marriage because each of them have not yet self actualized. None of the relationships in the plays offer any type of fulfillment. The two writers are alike in the way that their portrayals pose these two questions: What may a woman give and receive from her partner/husband if she herself lacks self nourishment and balance? Societal expectations and, in the case of the The Cherry Orchard, an aristocracy losing its wealth and power precipitate each woman s crisis. For any healthy relationship to last, both partners have to be fully committed to each other. In both plays, none of the relationships really offer any type of fulfillment. The title of Hedda Gabler, uses Hedda s maiden name, Gabler, even though her married name is Hedda Tesman. Based off of the initial reading of the title, one can already tell that there is a strong intention behind it. Isben purposely wrote the title that way to indicate that Hedda wanted to be recognized as her father s daughter, not as her husband s wife. This already proves that she is not fully in love with her husband and there is more that is going on beyond just the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
