Morality in Ethan Frome Essay examples
Morality in Ethan Frome In The Morality of Inertia, Lionel Trilling argues that Ethan Frome s
inability to make his own ethical decisions ultimately makes his smash up a tragic event caused
by the inactivity of morality. The nonexistence of this moral inertia is the explanation, for
Trilling, for the outcome of Frome; the lack of moral responsibility in any of the main characters
from the beginning of their lives paralyzes their decision making process they simply exist and
do what is their duty. Trilling s aspect that Frome was a morally inadequate man is a valid fact
affirmed by Edith Wharton s provided background of him; the idea that he was unable to make
choices and is only capable of enduring can be proven inaccurate with... Show more content on

Although Frome can be held responsible for his moral inactivity, he can be considered a morally
inadequate man in his present state. His inadequacy, however, was not a constant in life or a
sudden occurrence it snowballed from his youth and finally solidified through the smash up . His
earlier experiences in a university and the joy it brought him was quickly interrupted after a year by
his sickly parents. The unfortunate circumstance forces Ethan Frome to move back to the
depressing Starkfield he had just escaped. His parents illnesses bring along Zenobia, who would
be another future, unseen oppression along with Starkfield. For years, Ethan lives in depressing
conditions that decline as time goes on. The chance to finally leave them behind, however, comes
in Mattie, Zenobia s cousin and maid. Ethan s inability to act on this chance of escape finally seals
his fate when Mattie is paralyzed and he is critically injured. Although jinxed with unfortunate
circumstances, Ethan Frome s life could have been bettered if one small step or action was taken
by him for himself with the intention to create personal joy or pleasure. The importance of taking
steps in life betterment can be seen in Ethan Frome. Although one may lack a history of making
moral decisions, the human instinct to do so is always there (from Morality

Lesson of the Moth Poetry Analysis
Amber Brewer Dr. Fussell ENGL 1302 April 8, 2011 The lesson of the moth Analysis by Don
Marquis The title of this poem by Don Marquis is The Lesson of the Moth because it is a poem
about the thoughts of a moth and his outlook on life. The overall poem would be considered
argumentative being the moth is trying to inform the man that he should live his life and let his
hair down a little more instead of relishing the everyday routines of life. This is shown in
paragraph 3 when the moth says But we get bored with the routine/and crave beauty/and
excitement. (18 20)Another example of the passage being argumentative is when the man says and
before I could argue him/out of his philosophy. (43 44) Don Marquis expressed several tones...

The speaker expresses how the moth relates excitement with beauty and also by saying fire is
beauty too. The word excitement could mean to the moth having fun and living life. However,
compared to the man, the word excitement could mean trouble or risky being that the moth is
trying to fry himself on the electric bulb. In conclusion, Don Marquis message that he was
attempting to display can be true however it can incur some serious consequences at times. Works

Picture Book Analysis Essay
Picture Books Importance on a Child s Development Ever analyzed a picture book before? The
colors, shapes, and underlying message on every inch of the page create a story. A story that
makes your brain tick and contemplate what exactly you re looking at. These things are
significant to the constant development of a human being, but the specifically to a child. When I
was young I would drown my floor with Dr. Seuss and books that gave excitement to me just by
holding them. I loved looking at the pictures, the endless rhymes, and magical color schemes
because I had no other outlet than books to reach in a grab my attention the way they could. That s
why picture books are almost a necessity to a child s development. The type of... Show more content

On TV you only see what the media wants you to, but with books the possibilities are boundless
leaving you to take the story for what it s worth and run with it, all the while drawing your own
conclusions. For example, in my house, I would read books and then dart to my parents telling
them about what I just read and what it meant to me, or even how I saw the characters in my own
mind. It s amazing the things you can find out about yourself when you think and create on your
own instead of having someone do it for you. I appreciate those who gave me books, read to me
out loud, or handed me pens to doodle with because if I wasn t given the opportunities to explore
I probably wouldn t be the same person today. Even a kindergartener deserves that type of
freedom and I feel picture books are a great outlet for it. So you see, pictures, even in books help
minds to develop each time you take a glance at them. You gain that freedom in your mind and
can grow and expand to photography, galleries, museums, and even creations of your own
personal art... the possibilities seem endless. I would conclude that picture books are helpful to
people of all ages, especially the minds of children. Will you ever look at books the same

Olfaction Use in Avian Species Essay
Olfaction use in avian species
Odors are broadly used for individual, sexual and species recognition in vertebrates and may be
reliable signals of quality and compatibility when selecting mates. Yet, chemical signals in birds
have rarely been investigated. In fact, birds exhibit a wide array of communication mechanisms,
such as colors and songs, but rarely display obvious olfactory driven behaviors. This discrepancy
seen in the amount of information regarding olfactory use is due to the belief that birds do not
have a well developed olfactory system compared to other animals. Because they do not have a
well developed olfactory system, other perceptual cues, such as sight and audition, are seen as
better predictors of behavior. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, as they approach their nests, burrow nesters avoid making calls or songs; they do
not to bring attention to themselves so predators do not locate their nests. Having to locate their
nests in the dark, burrow nesters cannot efficiently use visual cues to locate their nests. Moreover,
because they avoid making calls and songs, they are unable to use auditory based cues to locate
their nests either. In these cases, other forms of communication is needed. Mardon and Bonadonna
(2009) assert that olfactory cues are a reliable method of locating their nests in the absence of
visual and auditory cues. Specifically, the characteristic smell of the burrow will help them locate it
when returning. To test this hypothesis, Mardon and Bonadonna (2009) used a Y maze experiment
to identify the olfactory preferences of petrels, birds known to use burrow nests. In Y maze
experiments, one specific odor is placed at each end of the top side, and the bird is placed at the
bottom side. The bird is believed to move toward the end that it prefers. In their experiment using
storm petrels, recognized and prefered their own scent compared to conspecifics. Further
investigation with petrels found that when placed in the Y maze they prefer the scent of their mate
to the odor of another conspecific (Mardon Bonadonna, 2009). Their studies show that a personal
scent exists for avian species, and that they have a preference for their own and

Persuasive Essay On Gun Control
One man with a gun can control 100 without one. Vladimir Lenin. This quote describes how one
person with a gun has so much control over many others that don t. It is a good example of what
is going on in society today because of all the shootings that have taken place in public, churches,
and schools. These mass shootings have created such controversy as to whether or not there
should be more gun control laws. On November 5, 2017, Devin Patrick Kelley began shooting
inside of the Sutherlands Springs Church killing more than 20 people including children.
Before this tragic incident, he had a history of domestic violence towards his ex wife and child
which he was charged with disorderly conduct . Due to his criminal history, he managed to buy
a rifle, that was used in the shooting, legally by lying on the background check paperwork
indicating he had no criminal history. This was months after the Las Vegas shooting that had
taken place on October 4, 2017 causing more than 50 fatalities. These shootings were committed
by convicted felons and/or mentally ill individuals who have made it clear that the purchase of
guns are easy and simple. These individuals had access to firearms because they had either
gained authorization by the government or purchased it illegally by giving false information on
paperwork. This has become a threat to many US citizens, for some do not feel safe because
nowadays anyone can easily purchase a gun. Most people would agree that more gun control laws
would not make much of a difference in the purchase of guns, however more gun control laws
should be enacted because it can decrease the amount of criminals that own a gun, it can decrease
the amount of homicides and suicidedeaths, and it can prevent dangerous situations such as public
shootings.
Guns have been a big problem in society today, and those that stand behind the guns have taken the
lives of innocent people. This leads to why more gun control laws should be enacted because it can
decrease the amount of criminals that own unregistered guns. Convicted felons have purchased
guns through gun shows or through personal connections based on the evidence provided by Amy
Sherman. Sherman states, private sellers without a federal

The Virgin Of Guadalupe And La Virgen De Guadalupe
In the final resolution concerning religion, Chicanas declare, Revolutionary change of [the]
Catholic Church or for it to get out of the way. On the resolutions listed under sexuality, Chicanas
mention how they recognize their suppression under the Catholic Church, how religion and culture
control their sex lives, and the guilt complexes pressured onto them when they challenge the
institution. Each of these themes are depicted through the cultural and religious symbol of the
Virgin of Guadalupe. La Virgen de Guadalupe or The Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of

The Virgin ordered Diego to collect Castilian roses around the hill and she helped him arrange them
into his cloak. On December 12 when Diego returned to the Archbishop, he opened his tilmГЎtli or
cloak in which the image of the Virgin appeared. In response, the archbishop honored the Virgin s
request and built an altar in her honor. Today, The Basilica de Guadalupe in Tepeyac stands in
dedication to the Virgin s first appearance and remains the most visited Catholic shrine. Because
of the Virgin s Mexican history, she holds great significance to Mexican Catholics, so it is no
surprise why the Virgin remains inherent in Mexican culture, or as literary scholar Debra J. Blake
so aptly defined, Guadalupe equals Mexico. Both men and women admire the Virgin, but her
religious setting provides a context for oppression through the church. NietoGomez explains how
the church utilized Guadalupe s image, Marianismo, the veneration of the Virgin Mary, became the
model of how to make oppression a religious obligation. This is the heritage of the Chicana. The
church created a patriarchal role for themselves by weaving the Virgin s image as a pure mother to
model ordinary women s behavior. By applying this method through the guise of subjugation, the
Church rationalized their need to protect women in order to maintain their pure, moral status.
Paradoxically, feminine virtues expressed by the Virgin as to be employed by women represents
many contradictory elements. Debra

Theme Of Women In A Room Of One s Own
For centuries women have been forced into a role which denied them equal opportunities.
Virginia Woolf expresses her frustration on why women were denied privacy in her novel, A
Room of One s Own. Woolf compares the traditional lifestyle tailored made for the opposite sex
and the sacrifices that came with it. Women are limited intellectually as to not interfere with their
domesticated duties. Even having the same desires for activities and education as men, a women s
place was not allowed in the man s world.
People may find Woolf s theories outdated; the statement For genius like Shakespeare s is not born
among laboring, uneducated, servile people would be met with controversy if published today
(Woolf 46). It is important to remember that Woolf believes that money and personal independence
go hand in hand with freedom of thought, and that poverty and its attendant troubles prevent such
thought. She admits that brilliance can emerge from low working classes but is rare. Woolf is
clearly at odds with any kind of protest literature, feeling that it reduces the incandescent talent of
the writer (Woolf 56).
The narrator returns home disappointed that she hasn t found some piece of truth to explain the
poverty that women don t share with men. Woolf thinks she needs a historian to describe the
conditions of women through history. Compared to men, woman s lives seem non existent. She
describes fiction as being connected to life but as careful as a spider web and, in

Shaping Identity in William Gibson s Neuromancer Essay
Shaping Identity in William Gibson s Neuromancer
The number one is not a thing. Math has no definitive reality. Numbers are a social construct, a
system of symbols designed to express the abstractions through which properly developed
societies explain aspects of reality. It follows that, as humanity seeks to understand more of what it
is to exist, bigger numbers are needed. Soon, we need machines to understand the numbers.
Society plants a base on information technology, efficiency, and a mechanical precision that is
startling. What is desirable in a product is distilled to a formulaic essence and packaged neatly.
Humans, too, are boiled down to science. Glossy shots, red lipstick, concrete biceps, and an ever

while Case is drawn ever closer to technology. Dixie himself illuminates the question of human

It has often been asserted that differences in the two candidates television personae accounted in
part for Kennedy s election victory. Some, however, dispute the significance of the televised 1960
debates, suggesting that while visual cues undoubtedly have the potential to influence voter
perceptions, the nature and extent of the influence remain a matter of speculation (Pendell and
Vancil P.54 1988). Furthermore; Keyton (1989) points out that Debates involving candidates for
the 1988 presidential nomination carry a similar message. Results of a study of college students
revealed the finding that the winner of the 1988 debate was predicted by perceptions of the
candidate who projected the strongest personal image, the greatest credibility, the most logical
arguments, and the strongest emotional appeals. Furthermore, voter preferences expressed after a

even the lack of debates can have significance. George Bush s successful 1988 presidential

emphasis of issues. Both of the major U.S. political parties have used such strategies, considered to
be departures from ethical behavior (Kelly 1990). Men and women react differently to the media

Rhetorical Analysis For Global Warming
Global Warming is a huge problem for the environment. The earth s temperature has risen about 1
degree Fahrenheit since 1900 the temperatures are continuing to rise setting record temperature
(Biello). This image is a public service announcement to turn off lights because it is a cause to
global warming. In the image a penguinis pulling on a plug to turn out a light. This image evokes
an emotional response because it has a baby penguin looking scared behind its mom, while the ice
they are on is melting. It also illustrates a point that leaving lights on can cause global warming
because it states it in the text. The light shining on the penguins looks like it is melting the ice
they are standing on. I selected this image because it caught my eye and then made me read the
text, which shows that it is an effective PSA. I also think global warming is a problem and I did
not know that leaving lights on made such a big impact. This image can be analyzed by looking
at the six rhetorical factors: character and action, setting, point of view, use of color, special
effects, and image presentation. First, the characters and action in this advertisement make a
large impact on this image. The penguins are struggling and are fearful for their lives. The
animal s facial expressions express how they are distressed that the light is causing the ice they
are standing on to melt. This displays how much of a problem global warming is and how we
should be more fearful of the impact it is making in the colder climates. One sources states
Specifically, more than two thirds of Antarcticas emperor penguin colonies will decline by more
than 50 percent by the end of the century under future climate change scenarios (Palermo). This
shows that global warming is truly hurting the penguins and many other animals similar. The
picture suggests an action to turn off lights to help reduce the pollution. Second, the setting of the
image takes place somewhere cold, which is the main area affected by global warming. The
penguins are standing on a block of ice symbolizing the Arctic and the block of ice is melting. The
Science Daily reports that ice melting rates were 25 times higher than expected in localized areas

The elaborateness of the bodhisattva remains in the figure as whole and in its separate parts,
specifically the headdress and its sword halo, the cloth, and the lotus flower seat. As a whole, the
bodhisattva is made up of multiple parts: the sword halo, the headdress, the bodhisattva s body
and arms, the lotus flower seat, and the earth base. The sword halo appears to be slightly detached
from the bodhisattva s body, mostly connected to the lotus flower seat. The halo gives the body
more depth because it provides a background. This means that the bodhisattva is not in need of

The sheer amount of weapons the bodhisattva, including the ax, trident, and spear, strikes fear in

because of the consequences that one could face on other paths of life. If on Buddhist path, one has
this bodhisattva to protect and guide them. It elevates the value of Buddhism and its teachings; the
viewer will see Buddhism as the way of life that will help them reach Heaven and achieve an

This first stanza from the poem, explains the journey of a man driving through a sawmill town and
his observations. Murray describes his journey through a small sawmill town in New South Wales
whilst using strong, vivid imagery and emotive language.
As evident by the title of this poem, imagery is a strong technique used in this poem as the author
describes with great detail his journey through a sawmill town. This technique is used most in the
following phrases: ...down a tilting road, into a distant valley. And The sawmill towns, bare
hamlets built of boards with perhaps a store . This has the effect of creating an image in the reader
s mind and making the poem even more real.
There is also figurative language used in phrases such as Having come from the clouds and tilting
road . This adds to the effect of imagery and emphasis on the journey to the sawmill town. It also
helps to make the stanza more interesting to the reader.

Fast Food Industry Essay
The fast food industry has come a long way from its humble beginnings in the suburbs of
Southern California. The industry has grown from being a commodity that worked to satisfy its
customers efficiently to being filled with corporations that are looking to make the largest profits

has a very strong hold over foodpolitics. The effects of this on the American society have become

Customer health is completely in the hands of the establishment and standards must be met in
order to ensure the health of customers. Due to many loopholes in current standard, it is easy for
companies to take advantage of what is in their food. In order to address public health for the
better, many fast food establishments have made public commitments to use only wholesome and
healthy ingredients in their food. The use of legally binding codes of conduct and ethics in fast
food help to ensure public safety and proper treatment of employees. Enforcement of these codes
will make for both a better image of fast food and receiving more trust from the public.
Over time, an easy scapegoat for consumers suffering from obesity has been fast food itself. The
great taste and relatively cheap price of fast food is claimed as making it an attractive option to
those with low income as well as the middle class, to some extent. Fast food is a long term trend
that is of high impact to modern culture and living. However, it s hard to entirely place the blame
on the fast food industry in the ever growing epidemic of obesity. Although it can easily be
identified as a source for what is linked to obesity, it is more of a moral standpoint where the
decision to dine out falls upon the customer. Fast food restaurants have gone far and wide to clean

in Selma he brings up how the 4 girls were unjustly murdered in their own church and that only
2% of the black population in Selma had the right to vote. He said, those that have gone on before
us say no more, that means protest, that means march, that means disturb the peace, that means jail
and that is hard . By the end of his speech the congregation was on their feet applauding and

that was happening the people were willing to protest and march. If Mr. King started off with that
they were going to march and protect for first the people wouldn t have reacted the same way.
Mr. King was very well liked and respected by the black community because he was protesting

Benny Goodman Research Paper
The Development of Swing Jazz through Benny Goodman
Although the conception of jazz occurred well before the 1920s, swing style jazz did not exist
until the 1930s. This style was brought about by elaboration on the style of the 1920s era and the
use of big bands and swung eighth notes. The emergence of this sub genre is often attributed to

Subliminal Perception Essay
Subliminal Perception
Subliminal Perception is a signal or message embedded in another object, designed to pass below
the normal limits of perception. These messages are indiscernible by the conscious mind, but
allegedly affect the subconscious or deeper mind. Subliminal techniques have occasionally been
used in advertising, but the purpose, effectiveness and frequency of such techniques is debated. It
is proven though that stimulation below the level of a person s conscious awareness can be shown
to have on some aspects of behavior. Following my research regarding, subliminal perception, I
came to the conclusion that it is used in advertising, but I am not sure to what extent. Companies
such as KFC and McDonald s use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the majority of beer and alcohol ads prominently feature attractive women, naturally
leading to a unconditioned response. Classical conditioning is also used by well known brands, in
which a uncconditioned stimulus might consist with a well known brand symbol that implies
products that have certain qualities. The print advertisement that I chose for classical conditioning
is from Geico. The Strong brand symbol of the Geico Gecko did not happen over night, but through
strong marketing campaigns supported by repetition, The Gecko has become a household symbol.
Sensory Perception:
Sensory perception is defined as, The immediate response of our sensory receptors (eyes, ears, nose,
mouth fingers) to the basic stimuli such as light, color, sound, odor texture. Formed with the
process by which people select, organize and interpret these sensations. Understanding the role that
the touch, taste, smell and sight play in marketing is important. It is our senses that interpret
information and give us meaning to what objects are around us.
Smell:
Scent marketing is taking interesting turns as manufacturers and marketers find innovative ways to
put scents into products.
The print work I chose to exemplify the smell perception is Air Wick. This particular
advertisement, although it is smaller than the average size, it offers a wide array of sensory stimuli.

How Well Do You Think The Governance System Of Jpmorgan...
Strategic Management Case Study Assignment Question 1. How well do you think the
governance system of JPMorgan Chase is working in protecting shareholder interests? Corporate
governance is a set of actions used to handle the relationship between stakeholders by
determining and controlling the strategic direction and performance of the organization.
Corporate governance major concern is making sure that the strategic decisions are effective
and that it paves the way towards strategic competitiveness. (Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson, 2017, p.
310). In today s corporation, the primary objective of corporate governance is to align top level
manager s and stakeholders interest. That is why corporate governance is involved when there is
a conflict of interest between with the owners, managers, and members of the board of directors
(Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson, 2017, p. 310 311). There are three internal and one external governance
mechanisms used for owners to govern managers to ensure they comply with their responsibility
to satisfy stakeholders and shareholder s needs. First, ownership concentration is stated as the
number of large block shareholders and the total percentage of the shares they own (Hitt, Ireland,
Hoskisson, 2017, p. 317). Second, the board of directors which are elected by the shareholders.
Their primary duty is to act in the owner s best interest and to monitor and control the businesses

Dystopian Society In Ayn Rand s Anthem
The juxtaposition of the society in Anthem with today s society is surprisingly terrifying. The
dystopian society in Anthem promotes the ideology of collectivism and the oppression of
individualism with resemblance to how aspects of those ideas are portrayed in our society. Anthem
primarily focuses on a controlled society, yet our society focuses on the competition of prosperity
amongst the population. Using Ayn Rands satiristic writing elements, the events in Anthem depict a
correlation to today s society, confirming Rand s warnings to the ignorant public. An important
aspect of this novel is the description of how the children are awarded a vocation. Equality 7 2521

Compare And Contrast Sixteen Candles And Ferris Bueller s...
1.After viewing both Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller s Day Off I would have to choose
Sixteen Candles to be my favorite of the two. My reasoning is because I feel the storyline and
characters were developed better, allowing the audience to feel a greater connection with the film.
When comparing the two films, Sixteen Candles comes across as more angst driven, with a strong
female lead. Ferris Bueller s Day Off has an obvious strong male lead character, with more humor
obvious throughout the film. The overall tone of Sixteen Candles is less upbeat than Ferris Bueller.
As the main character Samantha is struggling throughout the film with the acceptance of her family
forgetting her birthday, Ferris Bueller has no care in the world and refuses to be defeated. The
relationships in Ferris Bueller s Day Off are mainly friend to friend and student to authority. Sixteen
Candles depicts a more romantic aspect, with a love story being the main focus throughout.
2.Out of both of these films the one I find that strays mostly from John Hughes other teenage films
in Ferris Bueller s Day Off. Sixteen Candles, I found to be fitting with the other films because it
has a strong female lead, teen angst, and a major love story component. For example, Samantha
and Jake at the end of the film kissing in the candle light. A dramatic end scene kiss has been
depicted in Pretty in Pink as well. Ferris Bueller s Day Off on the other hand, is something
unlike any other John Hughes film. It is witty, and fast paced, not focusing on teen angst or
romance in any aspect. There are no love triangles, or finding out whether two main characters
will end up together. It takes another point of view from teenagers about being young and
enjoying life before it catches up with you. Ferris Bueller s Day Off also a strong theme of
relationships with authority figures, which we only see in the other John Hughes film, The
Breakfast Club. An example of this in the film is between Ferris and Mr. Rooney. There is
constant conflict between them, one example is when Ferris has Cameron prank call Mr. Rooney
s office. This shows not only Ferris disrespect for authority, but Mr. Rooney s disrespect for Ferris.

A University s Ethics
As Americans look towards the idea of college today, some may agree that the overall goals of a
university have drastically changed since the popularity of higher education has increased. If one
were to ask the universities what their core values consist of, most institutions would boast about
student academics and growth being at the top of the list. As this response may ring true with most
colleges in the US, specifically smaller schools, the increase in funds for research and athletic
programs have seemingly overtaken the attention of larger, more competitive universities. Higher
educationhas become a more popular choice among ambitious adults, providing them an opportunity
to move up in the working world. Further, with this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students, paying thousands of dollars a year to attend college, deserve to receive a decent education;
however, this is an ambiguous outcome when the professors are not being compensated as well as
they should be. The educators are delivering the actual learning work while most administrative
positions sit in an office all day and get paid more than twice as much for their labor.
The values surrounding university athletics have also become a controversial topic of interest
among Americans. Over the years, collegiate sports, especially football and basketball, have
evolved into commercialized teams around the country. Almost to the level of a professional team,
college athletes receive special treatment and an excess of benefits; one of the most significant
benefits that most of these athletes collect is free tuition. Depending on the school, colleges will
additionally cover a student s housing, dining, and supply fees; not to mention all of the free
equipment that already comes with being a college athlete. Derek Bok of the Princeton University

Argumentative Essay On Virtual Reality
Technology: a broad term that can define anything that aids human s ability to complete tasks or
increase an individual s quality of life. While technology is commonly thought of in a digital sense,
it can be much more than that. All technology, however, has a potential to impact society in some
way, whether significant or minuscule. It can affect many different tracts of our cultures around the
world such as medicine, government, agriculture, science, business, and education. Education could
be the most powerful, however, because of the weight it holds to mold the future generations and
how they will impact all other areas of our economy.
Virtual reality(VR) is a relatively new frontier in the technology industry. So new in fact, that, at
its current stage, what it is and its potentials are unfamiliar to the general public. VR originally
started gaining momentum as a new platform to game on, but its potential must be analyzed
broadly in more than just one vocation. Because of the immersion VR provides, it has an
immense capacity to benefit the educational field. Everyone is unique in the way they learn best;
some people learn best by reading, some people learn audibly better, and, some people learn
visually. This paper will analyze virtual reality to explain what VR is and any drawbacks it may
have, how and how much it is being used in education currently, how it is benefiting disabled
learners, who are able to have access to it, and what a future with VR may look like.

as an unusual form of pneumonia, something that had never been seen before. Within a few days,
multiple cases of similar symptoms had been reported in Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Toronto

To rule this virus and many other similar viruses, such as West Nile Virus, Respiratory Syncytial
Virus, and other strains of the influenza virus, out the doctor can perform a number of several
different viral tests. If all of the test come back negative, a chest X Ray or a chest CT scan can be
ordered to detect pneumonia. To further confirm the SARS virus, many standard and advanced
laboratory tests can be conducted. The standard blood tests include: arterial blood tests, blood
chemistry tests, and complete blood count tests. Advanced laboratory tests include a polymerase
chain reaction test, also known as a PCR test, gram staining respiratory mucus (Davis,3), direct
isolation of the virus itself, and antibody tests. While there are many tests in existence that help
detect SARS, they all have limitations. For example, a positive result of a polymerase chain
reaction indicates that the SARS CoV is present, but it is unable to provide information on the
amount of virus present and if it is enough to cause symptoms in the patient (Preiser, Drosten, 1).
Another limitation, is the heightened possibility of false negatives. This is can be because of an
unstable sample or due to the time the sample was taken. To help confirm the results, it is
recommended that the patient be monitored and samples are taken and stored to be

The Haunting Of Hill House Essay
The Necessity of a Gothic setting
In a gothic novel or story, the setting is exclusive to the plot. If a gothic story doesn t have a
perfect setting, the plot will not be as exciting to the reader. The setting needs to have dark
elements, horrifying twists, and turns to drive the story. In The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley
Jackson, Jackson exemplifies how a setting should be in a gothic novel. She uses modern
psychology and old ghost stories. These elements entice the reader to ponder what is real and what
is not.

The reader experiences this emotion while reading. Hill House gives off these feelings because
of all the deaths that have happened there. Many young people died in Hill House. The tomb in
Hill House has a cold spot. If you put your hand there for a second it will become numb. This
was shown in the story when Luke tested the cold spot with his hand, Luke, inside the nursery
doorway, could hold one end of the tape until his hand came into the cold spot, and then his
fingers lost strength and relaxed helplessly. Another part that adds to the uneasiness of the house
is Hugh Crain. No one knows what happened to him. The book says he turns into a recluse.
Reading into this detail, does that mean he turns into the house and becomes a part of the house?
Jackson doesn t tell the reader that. Hugh Crain s tragedy definitely adds to the emptiness and
sadness of the house. The same can be said when Eleanor meets her end. As a characterof the story
her life was empty and meaningless. She was always told what to do and what not to do. Eleanor
was an innocent. So naturally when she died it was tragic and sad. She also seemed to become a

Traits and Values Associated with Femininity in Antigone
ANTIGONE
The conventionally accepted roles of both males and females in ancient Grecian society were well
defined and manifested. Women were considered the weaker of the sexes and, thus, were expected
to remain in the home and perform their domestic duties, while the men were to be rulers and bread
winners. The woman s voice was not heard on any issues affecting the society as her opinions were
thought unworthy of consideration. She was required merely to reproduce, to execute her domestic
duties well and to submit incontestably to the authority of the men. In essence the Greeks valued
their women almost as little as a common slave was valued. These values and traits associated with

Property ownership could only be achieved through gifts, dowry and inheritance. The most
important role of women in ancient Greece, especially married women, was considered to be the
production of lawful children and the execution if household chores. Also she was required to
literally remain inside the home, except she was attending a special event as in those days
women found in the streets were either assumed to be enslaved, a harlot, a concubine or a
woman who had to find work outside of the home because of poverty (Thompson, par.8). It was
also considered respectable for a woman to remain out of sight and audible range when the man
of the house had guests. Evidently, women of ancient Greece were subjected to what modern day
women may consider harsh and unfair treatment as a result of some irrational beliefs and
practices that were given judicial recognition. Because of fear of facing the consequences that
may arise from contesting these laws, many women living during that period made no attempt to
do so. So they remained as they were considered to be weak and helpless because of fear. Sophocles
mythical anecdote of Antigone, however, shows the apparently unseen characteristics of women,
though not all women, in ancient Greece. They were not as weak, helpless and unwise as they were
believed to have been but were strong willed individuals, possessing strong characters and
competent of making sound decisions.

Why Did Britain Lose The Revolutionary War Essay
The revolutionary war that took place occurred in America, during the years between 1775 and
1783. This was an important war in the history of America since it resulted in the independence of
the 13 states that had been colonies under the rule of the crown Britain. One of the question that
comes into a person s mind when reading this history, is, how come the Great Britain army lost to
a small bunch of soldiers in the American army? After all, Britain had the best army in the world,
which had succeeded in beating all the other nations in Europe! Some of the reasons why Britain
lost the war are highlighted below (Tonsetic, 2011).
During the revolutionary war, the Britain army was not able to divide the army led by Washington.
Washington worked hard enough in ensuring the men under his command remained intact and at
times retreated whenever the war got too hot to minimize the loss of men under his command. He
did this, alongside other tactics to gain some advantage over the British army. If the British army

Once a file clerk received the file. Clerks delivered files to underwriters on an hourly basis
throughout the day. The average file clerk was paid $8,300 per year. One special file clerk was
used full time to search for requested files that another file clerk had not been able to find in the
expected place. It was estimated that
40 percent of the requested files were these no hit files requiring a search. Often these no hit files
were eventually found stacked in the requester s office. The primary customers of the file clerks
were underwriters and claims attorneys.
UNDERWRITING
Company management and operations analysts were consistently told that the greatest problem in
the company was the inability of file clerks to supply files in a speedy fashion. The entire
company from top to bottom viewed the productivity and effectiveness of the department as

Career Options And Qualifications Of The Certified
Business certifications attest to the expertise and qualifications of the certified. They offer a chance
of higher pay while serving to elevate professional status with a title of distinction within a specific
field of study. While each certification has many benefits each one comes with a set of costs and
requirements. These often hefty certification requirements accompany a costly exam and expensive
study materials that can potentially set an applicant back in both time and money. Many of these
business certification fields cover broad topics such as Accounting, Financial Planning, and
Economics.
Accountants aspiring to have more career options and to move up the corporate ladder should
become a Certified Public Accountant. This certification speaks to the knowledge, credentials and
overall ability of the certified and will command the respect of employers and peers ( How
Much Does it Cost to Become a CPA? ). For those aspiring to become corporate level managers
or partners in a firm, a CPA is required due to the prestige and respect that accompanies it
(NASBA). Even minor promotions and raises are much easier with the CPA certification.
Accountants who also desire higher pay should pursue the this certification. According to the 2015
Robert Half Salary Guide, CPAs can earn between 5% and 15% more than their non credentialed
counterparts (NASBA).
To pursue this certification in Wisconsin, candidates that are ready to test should apply through the
NASBA website, which

United States Of The African American Male Students Essay
Upon the premise of further exploration, Mari Ann Roberts found a definition of what is meant to
care for underachieving African American male students. Roberts surveyed eight African American
teachers to attain their point of view of what it meant to care for their students which included
informing them about how to survive in the racismof the United States of America that they will
and are exposed to (Roberts 456). The discussion of political clarity was addressed by several
teachers to help students understand the importance of education and emphasized that they
believed, for Black people, academic achievement would eventually equal equality (Roberts 458).
It should be noted the research identified teachers believed: informing the students about socio
political/colour talk matters helped them to understand as African Americans you have to work
harder to make it in the U.S (Roberts 458). Finally, this study points out students needed to be
pushed to work harder and encouraged to change their demeanor to not give Caucasians reason to
hurt them in any fashion as far as advancing academically (Roberts 458). Several participants
encouraged and demonstrated code switching suggesting

A Case Manager At An Outpatient Clinic
Ms.C was a case manager at an outpatient clinic that provided a variety of services. One of her
clients was Ms. R, who was receiving services as a result of a recent divorce. Ms. C had also
experienced a divorce in her past and though she had effectively dealt with that experience, but
found herself identifying with many comments by Ms. R. Through their work together, the two
women realized they shared many common interests. They often found themselves talking about
these shared interests in their time together and eventually began meeting for coffee after their
sessions. Ms. R soon suggested they begin spending additional time together socially and Ms. C
agreed. Before long, they became fast friends, spending significant amount of social time together
on evenings and weekends, visiting clubs, going to movies or visiting local restaurants. After
several months, the two had a falling out about a gentleman both women favors. Ms. R filed a
complaint with the Regulatory agency in her state about the relationships. Throughout this paper
this case will be analyzed including the harmful effects of the relationship on all parties involved in
the helping relationship, the social and emotional impacts of the relationship, the effect on the
treatment relationship, the likely outcome of Ms. R s complaint if filed in New York State, and the
strategies to minimize the likelihood of such a relationship arising. There are a few things within

When and why to adjust inventory values to lower of cost or market?
Sources:

35 1 A departure from the cost basis of pricing the inventory is required when the utility of the
goods is no longer as great as their cost. Where there is evidence that the utility of goods, in their
disposal in the ordinary course of business, will be less than cost, whether due to physical
deterioration, obsolescence, changes in price levels, or other causes, the difference shall be
recognized as a loss of the current period. This is generally accomplished by stating such goods at

costs necessarily incurred to bring it to the condition and location necessary for its intended use, in
principle, the cost incurred in financing expenditures for an asset during a required construction or
development period is itself a part of the asset s historical acquisition cost. The cause and effect
relationship between acquiring an asset and the incurrence of interest cost makes interest cost
analogous to a direct cost that is readily and objectively assignable to the acquired asset. Failure to
capitalize the interest cost associated with the acquisition of qualifying assets improperly reduces
reported earnings during the period of acquisition and increases reported earnings in later periods.
Apply to Guidance: When financing the construction of a building, the interest should be
capitalized as part of the cost of the building. This would more adequately match revenues and
expenses in the period in which they are earned. When the building is being used and the cost
thereof is being allocated via depreciation, the expenses would adequately reflect the cost of the
building and include a portion of the interest that was incurred as the building was being
constructed. If the interest is not

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Debate Games
For me, every project is associated with a drop of water, and only the amalgam of drops can form
the great ocean of good things, that do not require a reward.
One of this drops is debate. I ve started playing debates 3 years ago. Debate games formed in
myself critical and logical thinking. I ve gained ability to analyze constructively on different topics,
for instance: THBT everyone who has attained publicly funded education should work a minimum
of 3 years. , Advantages and disadvantages of migration for Moldova , Republic of Moldova can
be integrated in Europe , Citizens must pay much more taxes in local budgets than in public one
and others. Games promotes courage of expression, self confidence, tolerance for other points of

Rick Reilly s The Real New York Giants
Rick Reilly uses a lyrical tone in his essay The Real New York Giants through his images
comparing the attacks on The World Trade Center to their fireman football team. He shows this
emotional tone full of images by comparing a pile of football players to a pile of rubble. The
brothers Tommy and Danny would pull each other out of the pile of big, sweaty football players;
but this time Danny was not pulling him out from the pile of players. One last time, Danny pulled
Tommy out of the pile. Just this line is filled with many emotions, showing that the brothers always
had each others back no matter in football or the rubble. It is a very difficult scene to imagine as
Danny found his own brother in the rubble of the towers, after promising

The Benefits Of Technology
Technology is ever increasing in our society. There seems to be more and more focus on
innovation, learning, and making everything as efficient as possible with the help of technology.
Technology is not only used at home, but practically everywhere. Libraries and schools, in
particular, are aiding in the learning process for many, with the use of technology. While technology
holds a plethora of benefits, there is a rather common debate about if the use of it holds more
consequences than benefits for children. There is a great importance on knowing how much
technology is too much, what kind of content is appropriate or beneficial, and how to protect
children from situations that occur in online platforms, such as cyber bullying.
Our society has made astounding advancements in the world of technology, and as a result it is
becoming increasingly integrated into the daily lives of adults and children alike. Children seem
to be spending less time outdoors and doing other activities than they are on the computer,
watching television, or playing video games. There is a legitimate concern for children who seem
to use media with excess. Adults often wonder, how much is too much. There is differing opinion
among many on the answer. There are benefits and consequences to prolonged media use, that need
to be examined in order to discover and promote a healthy balance.
There can be substantial advantages to incorporating the use of technology into a child s education.

Biometric Security Technology Essay
Biometric Security Technology
You have seen biometric technology in the films Mission: Impossible and Gattaca. The technology
has also graced the covers of many weekly news magazines. But many people, even though the
technology has been widely talked about for the last half decade, are still surprisingly unaware of
what biometrics are and why the technology is so important for computer security and personal
identification.
Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing a person based on a physical or behavioral
characteristic (2001). Essentially, biometric security technologies are used to accurately identify
individuals on a unique trait. The most common biometric security techniques used currently are:

How Biometric Security Technology Works One of the most important ways that biometric
technology is impacting security lies within the confines of computer information systems. The
government, the military, and large corporations need to have complete assurance that the data and
information stored on their networks and databases are only available to users who have been
authorized to view such material.
Biometric technology offers an alternative to the most used system currently in place in most
operations: passwords or personal identification numbers (PIN). Instead of users inputting their
password or PIN, users interact with a computer terminal that will scan their finger, face, voice,
retina, etc. to identify them. Many of the next generation personal computer systems will have
integrated biometric technology so that no external hardware is needed. In the mean time, users can
buy small peripherals, like a mouse with integrated biometric technology or a small finger terminal
for finger scans, to secure their personal computers.
Advantages of Biometric Security Technology Improved accuracy and improved convenience are
two of the biggest benefits of biometric technology for personal identification. First, unlike
passwords or PIN numbers, which can be used by anyone who knows the required information,
biometrics looks at a

Nantucket Nectars Juice Guys Bottle Formula for Success With Quality Ingredients The island of
Nantucket is known for its entrepreneurial spirit. Tom Scott and Tom First caught that fever nine
years ago when they started peddling Nantucket Nectars in the island s harbor. Now the self
proclaimed juice guys hold the number two spot in the New Age beverage market. To say the juice

busy season ended, it was time for the boys to return to Brown and complete their education.
Little did they know they were on the brink of discovering a multi million dollar business with
only a strong entrepreneurial spirit, a modest amount of money and a recipe for success. They
could not know it then, but Allserve would lead them to the first channel of distribution for their
future juice business. After graduating college, the two returned to the island of Nantucket to
pick up where they left off with Allserve. But they knew once the season ended, the winter
months would be challenging at best. We were looking for ways to make our business year
round, and we were involved in a lot of different things. We were involved in the scallop industry,
storing boats in the winter, servicing engines. We even distributed bread, explains First. Only a
brave few people dared to endure the slow winter months on the island, but those who did had to
stick together. Cook offs were common on many nights, where Nantucket natives gathered to show
off their culinary skills. First would bring the juice. This was not just any juice, but a special

Improving The Best Of Existing State Standards
Structuring on the best of existing state standards, the Common Core State Standards provide a
clear and reliable learning goal to help prepare students for college, career, and life. The standards
clearly demonstrate what students are expected to learn at each grade level, so that every parent
and teacher can understand and support their learning. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, grade
by grade standards exist in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. From 9th through 12th
grade, the standards are grouped into grade sets of 9th through 10th grade standards and 11th
through 12th grade standards. Moreover, the CCSS stress the importance of using primary texts in
the classroom to build literacy, along with many other things. While the standards set grade
specific goals, they do not define how the standards should be taught or which materials should be
used to support students. States and districts know that there will need to be a range of supports in
place to guarantee that all students, including those with special needs and English language
learners, can master the standards. It is up to the states to outline the full range of supports
appropriate for these students. Since the release of the final standards in 2010, a two party mix of
organizations representing parents, teachers, business leaders, and other key voices have strongly
supported the Common Core State Standards. The National Governors Association Center for Best
Practices (NGA Center) and the

Alexander The Great Leader
Alexander the Great was a great leader because he was always determined to be successful, even
when he was young he wanted to win and he always had good morals and a good way of life.
Alexander always loved Greece and was selfless when he was young. Alexander kept these traits
and developed as a leader and used them while he was conquering other countries. Alexander
initially brought 40,000 men to take over Persia, knowing he would get more men from the
places he took over. He spread the Greek ways and he could do anything he wanted because he

One example of innovative tactics is when he had his men cross the Tiber River, so they could
sneak up on the Persians and destroy their army with a surprise attack. This led him to a great
victory with using a small army against a very big one. This is an example of his army being
efficient. In his youth, Alexander studied war tactics with his mentors instead of going out and
wasting time on games. He was forged to be a great, dominant leader. Alexander was very good
at deciding between fair and honorable and this was a hard thing to do that helped his military
career a lot. Alexander had amazing pre war speeches and this one consisted of him telling the
soldiers their existence depended on their effort in the war. This particular war he did not have
many soldiers compared to the Persians, but his superior tactics led him to victory. Alexander set
up his army with cavalry in the middle with archers on both sides of that, and on the sides of the
archers were soldiers on foot with non ranged weapons. This tactic is a great tactic because the
archers can provide cover for soldiers or the calvary. Alexander had two other people who

Sociological Explanations Of Gender Display By Goffman s
This next section provides a general discussion of Goffman s (1976) gender display . This is
used to investigate how gender is represented through interaction, and therefore be seen as natural,
while it s being produced as a socially organised achievement . Femininity and masculinity are
viewed as prototypes of essential expression something that can be conveyed in any social
situation and yet something that strikes at the most basic characterisation of the individual (1976,
p. 75). These are seen as meaningful behaviour which are evidence of our essential natures .

1986, cited in West and Zimmerman 1987) and the likelihood of more than two sexes (Cucchiari
1981, cited in West and Zimmerman 1987). More importantly, Kessler and McKenna (1978, p. 1

we carry on observing a world of two naturally sexed human beings. It is the assumption that
measures are required that supplies the basis for sex classification. They argue gender is cultural
occurrences, rather than a group of characteristics or ways of acting. Original sex assignment and
having the crucial criteria for that gender category hasn t got much to do with the identification of
sex category in day to day life. To conclude, Kessler and McKenna (1978) believe people take

  • 2. Morality in Ethan Frome Essay examples Morality in Ethan Frome In The Morality of Inertia, Lionel Trilling argues that Ethan Frome s inability to make his own ethical decisions ultimately makes his smash up a tragic event caused by the inactivity of morality. The nonexistence of this moral inertia is the explanation, for Trilling, for the outcome of Frome; the lack of moral responsibility in any of the main characters from the beginning of their lives paralyzes their decision making process they simply exist and do what is their duty. Trilling s aspect that Frome was a morally inadequate man is a valid fact affirmed by Edith Wharton s provided background of him; the idea that he was unable to make choices and is only capable of enduring can be proven inaccurate with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Frome can be held responsible for his moral inactivity, he can be considered a morally inadequate man in his present state. His inadequacy, however, was not a constant in life or a sudden occurrence it snowballed from his youth and finally solidified through the smash up . His earlier experiences in a university and the joy it brought him was quickly interrupted after a year by his sickly parents. The unfortunate circumstance forces Ethan Frome to move back to the depressing Starkfield he had just escaped. His parents illnesses bring along Zenobia, who would be another future, unseen oppression along with Starkfield. For years, Ethan lives in depressing conditions that decline as time goes on. The chance to finally leave them behind, however, comes in Mattie, Zenobia s cousin and maid. Ethan s inability to act on this chance of escape finally seals his fate when Mattie is paralyzed and he is critically injured. Although jinxed with unfortunate circumstances, Ethan Frome s life could have been bettered if one small step or action was taken by him for himself with the intention to create personal joy or pleasure. The importance of taking steps in life betterment can be seen in Ethan Frome. Although one may lack a history of making moral decisions, the human instinct to do so is always there (from Morality ... Lesson of the Moth Poetry Analysis Amber Brewer Dr. Fussell ENGL 1302 April 8, 2011 The lesson of the moth Analysis by Don Marquis The title of this poem by Don Marquis is The Lesson of the Moth because it is a poem about the thoughts of a moth and his outlook on life. The overall poem would be considered argumentative being the moth is trying to inform the man that he should live his life and let his hair down a little more instead of relishing the everyday routines of life. This is shown in paragraph 3 when the moth says But we get bored with the routine/and crave beauty/and excitement. (18 20)Another example of the passage being argumentative is when the man says and before I could argue him/out of his philosophy. (43 44) Don Marquis expressed several tones... In conclusion, Don Marquis message that he was attempting to display can be true however it can incur some serious consequences at times. Works Cited Marquis, Don. The Lesson of the Moth. • 4. Picture Book Analysis Essay Picture Books Importance on a Child s Development Ever analyzed a picture book before? The colors, shapes, and underlying message on every inch of the page create a story. A story that makes your brain tick and contemplate what exactly you re looking at. These things are significant to the constant development of a human being, but the specifically to a child. When I was young I would drown my floor with Dr. Seuss and books that gave excitement to me just by holding them. I loved looking at the pictures, the endless rhymes, and magical color schemes because I had no other outlet than books to reach in a grab my attention the way they could. That s why picture books are almost a necessity to a child s development. The type of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On TV you only see what the media wants you to, but with books the possibilities are boundless leaving you to take the story for what it s worth and run with it, all the while drawing your own conclusions. For example, in my house, I would read books and then dart to my parents telling them about what I just read and what it meant to me, or even how I saw the characters in my own mind. It s amazing the things you can find out about yourself when you think and create on your own instead of having someone do it for you. I appreciate those who gave me books, read to me out loud, or handed me pens to doodle with because if I wasn t given the opportunities to explore I probably wouldn t be the same person today. Even a kindergartener deserves that type of freedom and I feel picture books are a great outlet for it. So you see, pictures, even in books help minds to develop each time you take a glance at them. You gain that freedom in your mind and can grow and expand to photography, galleries, museums, and even creations of your own personal art... the possibilities seem endless. I would conclude that picture books are helpful to people of all ages, especially the minds of children. Will you ever look at books the same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Olfaction Use in Avian Species Essay Olfaction use in avian species Odors are broadly used for individual, sexual and species recognition in vertebrates and may be reliable signals of quality and compatibility when selecting mates. Yet, chemical signals in birds have rarely been investigated. In fact, birds exhibit a wide array of communication mechanisms, such as colors and songs, but rarely display obvious olfactory driven behaviors. This discrepancy seen in the amount of information regarding olfactory use is due to the belief that birds do not have a well developed olfactory system compared to other animals. Because they do not have a well developed olfactory system, other perceptual cues, such as sight and audition, are seen as better predictors of behavior. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, as they approach their nests, burrow nesters avoid making calls or songs; they do not to bring attention to themselves so predators do not locate their nests. Having to locate their nests in the dark, burrow nesters cannot efficiently use visual cues to locate their nests. Moreover, because they avoid making calls and songs, they are unable to use auditory based cues to locate their nests either. In these cases, other forms of communication is needed. Mardon and Bonadonna (2009) assert that olfactory cues are a reliable method of locating their nests in the absence of visual and auditory cues. Specifically, the characteristic smell of the burrow will help them locate it when returning. To test this hypothesis, Mardon and Bonadonna (2009) used a Y maze experiment to identify the olfactory preferences of petrels, birds known to use burrow nests. In Y maze experiments, one specific odor is placed at each end of the top side, and the bird is placed at the bottom side. The bird is believed to move toward the end that it prefers. In their experiment using storm petrels, recognized and prefered their own scent compared to conspecifics. Further investigation with petrels found that when placed in the Y maze they prefer the scent of their mate to the odor of another conspecific (Mardon Bonadonna, 2009). Their studies show that a personal scent exists for avian species, and that they have a preference for their own and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control One man with a gun can control 100 without one. Vladimir Lenin. This quote describes how one person with a gun has so much control over many others that don t. It is a good example of what is going on in society today because of all the shootings that have taken place in public, churches, and schools. These mass shootings have created such controversy as to whether or not there should be more gun control laws. On November 5, 2017, Devin Patrick Kelley began shooting inside of the Sutherlands Springs Church killing more than 20 people including children. Before this tragic incident, he had a history of domestic violence towards his ex wife and child which he was charged with disorderly conduct . Due to his criminal history, he managed to buy a rifle, that was used in the shooting, legally by lying on the background check paperwork indicating he had no criminal history. This was months after the Las Vegas shooting that had taken place on October 4, 2017 causing more than 50 fatalities. These shootings were committed by convicted felons and/or mentally ill individuals who have made it clear that the purchase of guns are easy and simple. These individuals had access to firearms because they had either gained authorization by the government or purchased it illegally by giving false information on paperwork. This has become a threat to many US citizens, for some do not feel safe because nowadays anyone can easily purchase a gun. Most people would agree that more gun control laws would not make much of a difference in the purchase of guns, however more gun control laws should be enacted because it can decrease the amount of criminals that own a gun, it can decrease the amount of homicides and suicidedeaths, and it can prevent dangerous situations such as public shootings. Guns have been a big problem in society today, and those that stand behind the guns have taken the lives of innocent people. This leads to why more gun control laws should be enacted because it can decrease the amount of criminals that own unregistered guns. Convicted felons have purchased guns through gun shows or through personal connections based on the evidence provided by Amy Sherman. Sherman states, private sellers without a federal ... • 7. The Virgin Of Guadalupe And La Virgen De Guadalupe In the final resolution concerning religion, Chicanas declare, Revolutionary change of [the] Catholic Church or for it to get out of the way. On the resolutions listed under sexuality, Chicanas mention how they recognize their suppression under the Catholic Church, how religion and culture control their sex lives, and the guilt complexes pressured onto them when they challenge the institution. Each of these themes are depicted through the cultural and religious symbol of the Virgin of Guadalupe. La Virgen de Guadalupe or The Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, represents a central image of Mexican Catholicism. The Catholic Church utilized the symbolic image of the Virgin of Guadalupe to represent feminine virtue through a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Virgin ordered Diego to collect Castilian roses around the hill and she helped him arrange them into his cloak. On December 12 when Diego returned to the Archbishop, he opened his tilmГЎtli or cloak in which the image of the Virgin appeared. In response, the archbishop honored the Virgin s request and built an altar in her honor. Today, The Basilica de Guadalupe in Tepeyac stands in dedication to the Virgin s first appearance and remains the most visited Catholic shrine. Because of the Virgin s Mexican history, she holds great significance to Mexican Catholics, so it is no surprise why the Virgin remains inherent in Mexican culture, or as literary scholar Debra J. Blake so aptly defined, Guadalupe equals Mexico. Both men and women admire the Virgin, but her religious setting provides a context for oppression through the church. NietoGomez explains how the church utilized Guadalupe s image, Marianismo, the veneration of the Virgin Mary, became the model of how to make oppression a religious obligation. This is the heritage of the Chicana. The church created a patriarchal role for themselves by weaving the Virgin s image as a pure mother to model ordinary women s behavior. By applying this method through the guise of subjugation, the Church rationalized their need to protect women in order to maintain their pure, moral status. Paradoxically, feminine virtues expressed by the Virgin as to be employed by women represents many contradictory elements. Debra ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Theme Of Women In A Room Of One s Own For centuries women have been forced into a role which denied them equal opportunities. Virginia Woolf expresses her frustration on why women were denied privacy in her novel, A Room of One s Own. Woolf compares the traditional lifestyle tailored made for the opposite sex and the sacrifices that came with it. Women are limited intellectually as to not interfere with their domesticated duties. Even having the same desires for activities and education as men, a women s place was not allowed in the man s world. People may find Woolf s theories outdated; the statement For genius like Shakespeare s is not born among laboring, uneducated, servile people would be met with controversy if published today (Woolf 46). It is important to remember that Woolf believes that money and personal independence go hand in hand with freedom of thought, and that poverty and its attendant troubles prevent such thought. She admits that brilliance can emerge from low working classes but is rare. Woolf is clearly at odds with any kind of protest literature, feeling that it reduces the incandescent talent of the writer (Woolf 56). The narrator returns home disappointed that she hasn t found some piece of truth to explain the poverty that women don t share with men. Woolf thinks she needs a historian to describe the conditions of women through history. Compared to men, woman s lives seem non existent. She describes fiction as being connected to life but as careful as a spider web and, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Shaping Identity in William Gibson s Neuromancer Essay Shaping Identity in William Gibson s Neuromancer The number one is not a thing. Math has no definitive reality. Numbers are a social construct, a system of symbols designed to express the abstractions through which properly developed societies explain aspects of reality. It follows that, as humanity seeks to understand more of what it is to exist, bigger numbers are needed. Soon, we need machines to understand the numbers. Society plants a base on information technology, efficiency, and a mechanical precision that is startling. What is desirable in a product is distilled to a formulaic essence and packaged neatly. Humans, too, are boiled down to science. Glossy shots, red lipstick, concrete biceps, and an ever decreasing waistline ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Gibson s cyberpunk world, technology and humanity simultaneously clash and meld, creating a society in which humans scramble to interact with technology, using it to gain footholds or augment their actual physical bodies. Humanity, in a sense, ceases to be defined by being human The Ashpools and Hideo, for instance, are clones, their DNA unoriginal, replicated like the numbers and symbols that make up the infinite information networks of the Sprawl. More apparently, Dixie Flatline is nothing more than a computer program hacked and grifted from a corporation, but he is virtually the only major character in the book that treats Case like a friend without a motive behind it, aside from Linda, who is relatively unimportant to the flow of the story after her initial involvement. (Damyanov) Through this relationship, Dixie gains at least a semblance of humanity, while Case is drawn ever closer to technology. Dixie himself illuminates the question of human intelligence during a conversation with Case: ...Me, I m not human either, but I respond like one, see? Wait a sec, Case said. Are you sentient, or not? Well, it feels like I am, kid, but I m really just a bunch of ROM. It s one of them, ah, philosophical questions, I guess... It has often been asserted that differences in the two candidates television personae accounted in part for Kennedy s election victory. Some, however, dispute the significance of the televised 1960 debates, suggesting that while visual cues undoubtedly have the potential to influence voter perceptions, the nature and extent of the influence remain a matter of speculation (Pendell and Vancil P.54 1988). Furthermore; Keyton (1989) points out that Debates involving candidates for the 1988 presidential nomination carry a similar message. Results of a study of college students revealed the finding that the winner of the 1988 debate was predicted by perceptions of the candidate who projected the strongest personal image, the greatest credibility, the most logical arguments, and the strongest emotional appeals. Furthermore, voter preferences expressed after a first debate were strong predictors of eventual candidate choice. In some political campaigns, even the lack of debates can have significance. George Bush s successful 1988 presidential campaign employed debate avoidance, a reliance upon emotional appeals and ridicule, and a de emphasis of issues. Both of the major U.S. political parties have used such strategies, considered to be departures from ethical behavior (Kelly 1990). It also illustrates a point that leaving lights on can cause global warming because it states it in the text. The light shining on the penguins looks like it is melting the ice they are standing on. I selected this image because it caught my eye and then made me read the text, which shows that it is an effective PSA. I also think global warming is a problem and I did not know that leaving lights on made such a big impact. This image can be analyzed by looking at the six rhetorical factors: character and action, setting, point of view, use of color, special effects, and image presentation. First, the characters and action in this advertisement make a large impact on this image. The penguins are struggling and are fearful for their lives. The animal s facial expressions express how they are distressed that the light is causing the ice they are standing on to melt. This displays how much of a problem global warming is and how we should be more fearful of the impact it is making in the colder climates. One sources states Specifically, more than two thirds of Antarcticas emperor penguin colonies will decline by more than 50 percent by the end of the century under future climate change scenarios (Palermo). This shows that global warming is truly hurting the penguins and many other animals similar. The picture suggests an action to turn off lights to help reduce the pollution. Second, the setting of the image takes place somewhere cold, which is the main area affected by global warming. The penguins are standing on a block of ice symbolizing the Arctic and the block of ice is melting. The Science Daily reports that ice melting rates were 25 times higher than expected in localized areas of Antarctica s largest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Bodhisattva s Body The elaborateness of the bodhisattva remains in the figure as whole and in its separate parts, specifically the headdress and its sword halo, the cloth, and the lotus flower seat. As a whole, the bodhisattva is made up of multiple parts: the sword halo, the headdress, the bodhisattva s body and arms, the lotus flower seat, and the earth base. The sword halo appears to be slightly detached from the bodhisattva s body, mostly connected to the lotus flower seat. The halo gives the body more depth because it provides a background. This means that the bodhisattva is not in need of having a highly decorated backdrop behind it, especially because the halo creates an interesting shadow. The use of legally binding codes of conduct and ethics in fast food help to ensure public safety and proper treatment of employees. Enforcement of these codes will make for both a better image of fast food and receiving more trust from the public. Fast food is a long term trend that is of high impact to modern culture and living. However, it s hard to entirely place the blame on the fast food industry in the ever growing epidemic of obesity. Corporate governance is a set of actions used to handle the relationship between stakeholders by determining and controlling the strategic direction and performance of the organization. • 22. Compare And Contrast Sixteen Candles And Ferris Bueller s... 1.After viewing both Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller s Day Off I would have to choose Sixteen Candles to be my favorite of the two. My reasoning is because I feel the storyline and characters were developed better, allowing the audience to feel a greater connection with the film. When comparing the two films, Sixteen Candles comes across as more angst driven, with a strong female lead. Ferris Bueller s Day Off has an obvious strong male lead character, with more humor obvious throughout the film. The overall tone of Sixteen Candles is less upbeat than Ferris Bueller. As the main character Samantha is struggling throughout the film with the acceptance of her family forgetting her birthday, Ferris Bueller has no care in the world and refuses to be defeated. The relationships in Ferris Bueller s Day Off are mainly friend to friend and student to authority. Sixteen Candles depicts a more romantic aspect, with a love story being the main focus throughout. 2.Out of both of these films the one I find that strays mostly from John Hughes other teenage films in Ferris Bueller s Day Off. Sixteen Candles, I found to be fitting with the other films because it has a strong female lead, teen angst, and a major love story component. For example, Samantha and Jake at the end of the film kissing in the candle light. A dramatic end scene kiss has been depicted in Pretty in Pink as well. Ferris Bueller s Day Off on the other hand, is something unlike any other John Hughes film. It is witty, and fast paced, not focusing on teen angst or romance in any aspect. There are no love triangles, or finding out whether two main characters will end up together. It takes another point of view from teenagers about being young and enjoying life before it catches up with you. Ferris Bueller s Day Off also a strong theme of relationships with authority figures, which we only see in the other John Hughes film, The Breakfast Club. An example of this in the film is between Ferris and Mr. Rooney. There is constant conflict between them, one example is when Ferris has Cameron prank call Mr. Rooney s office. While technology is commonly thought of in a digital sense, it can be much more than that. All technology, however, has a potential to impact society in some way, whether significant or minuscule. It can affect many different tracts of our cultures around the world such as medicine, government, agriculture, science, business, and education. Education could be the most powerful, however, because of the weight it holds to mold the future generations and how they will impact all other areas of our economy. • 32. Traits and Values Associated with Femininity in Antigone ANTIGONE The conventionally accepted roles of both males and females in ancient Grecian society were well defined and manifested. Women were considered the weaker of the sexes and, thus, were expected to remain in the home and perform their domestic duties, while the men were to be rulers and bread winners. The woman s voice was not heard on any issues affecting the society as her opinions were thought unworthy of consideration. She was required merely to reproduce, to execute her domestic duties well and to submit incontestably to the authority of the men. In essence the Greeks valued their women almost as little as a common slave was valued. These values and traits associated with femininity in ancient Grecian societies are ... The most important role of women in ancient Greece, especially married women, was considered to be the production of lawful children and the execution if household chores. Also she was required to literally remain inside the home, except she was attending a special event as in those days women found in the streets were either assumed to be enslaved, a harlot, a concubine or a woman who had to find work outside of the home because of poverty (Thompson, par.8). It was also considered respectable for a woman to remain out of sight and audible range when the man of the house had guests. Evidently, women of ancient Greece were subjected to what modern day women may consider harsh and unfair treatment as a result of some irrational beliefs and practices that were given judicial recognition. Because of fear of facing the consequences that may arise from contesting these laws, many women living during that period made no attempt to do so. So they remained as they were considered to be weak and helpless because of fear. Sophocles mythical anecdote of Antigone, however, shows the apparently unseen characteristics of women, though not all women, in ancient Greece. They were not as weak, helpless and unwise as they were believed to have been but were strong willed individuals, possessing strong characters and competent of making sound decisions. ... • 35. Why Did Britain Lose The Revolutionary War Essay The revolutionary war that took place occurred in America, during the years between 1775 and 1783. This was an important war in the history of America since it resulted in the independence of the 13 states that had been colonies under the rule of the crown Britain. One of the question that comes into a person s mind when reading this history, is, how come the Great Britain army lost to a small bunch of soldiers in the American army? After all, Britain had the best army in the world, which had succeeded in beating all the other nations in Europe! Some of the reasons why Britain lost the war are highlighted below (Tonsetic, 2011). During the revolutionary war, the Britain army was not able to divide the army led by Washington. Washington worked hard enough in ensuring the men under his command remained intact and at times retreated whenever the war got too hot to minimize the loss of men under his command. The cause and effect relationship between acquiring an asset and the incurrence of interest cost makes interest cost analogous to a direct cost that is readily and objectively assignable to the acquired asset. Biometric technology offers an alternative to the most used system currently in place in most operations: passwords or personal identification numbers (PIN). Instead of users inputting their password or PIN, users interact with a computer terminal that will scan their finger, face, voice, retina, etc. to identify them. Many of the next generation personal computer systems will have integrated biometric technology so that no external hardware is needed. Improving The Best Of Existing State Standards Structuring on the best of existing state standards, the Common Core State Standards provide a clear and reliable learning goal to help prepare students for college, career, and life. The standards clearly demonstrate what students are expected to learn at each grade level, so that every parent and teacher can understand and support their learning. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, grade by grade standards exist in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. From 9th through 12th grade, the standards are grouped into grade sets of 9th through 10th grade standards and 11th through 12th grade standards. Moreover, the CCSS stress the importance of using primary texts in the classroom to build literacy, along with many other things. While the standards set grade specific goals, they do not define how the standards should be taught or which materials should be used to support students. States and districts know that there will need to be a range of supports in place to guarantee that all students, including those with special needs and English language learners, can master the standards. It is up to the states to outline the full range of supports appropriate for these students.
