Hurricane Katrina has been noted as one of the costliest and deadliest natural
disasters in US history. This paper will exam the city of New Orleans and the
preparation, response, and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This catastrophic event

The city of New Orleans is the most populated city in state of Louisiana. Due to the

and construct numerous flood control projects including the Lake Pontchartrain and

Yesterday, I was granted the opportunity, as a New York Film, Academy alumni ,
to attend a Q A given by producer, Jack Rapke, preceded by a screening of his
newest film, The Walk which is based on a true story. The movie stars Joseph
Gordon Levitt (whom Rapke called Joe ) who plays French tightrope walker
Phillippe Petit who in 1974, strung a rope connecting the buildings of the world
trade center then tightrope walked across it. The movie, directed by Robert
Zemeckis (who Rapke called Bob ), starred Joseph Gordon Levitt, who, much to my
surprise, did all of his own stunts and speaks fluent French. His acting performance

about who she really is just to get by for the day without being judged. She was

Ethnicity and race have been used in American society to the point where both words
are indistinguishable from each other. Race is a social construct (Throop, Lecture, 10
/8/2015). Race is a social construct because race is used to differentiate the different
ethnic groups from each other. Race should not be used to separate the different
ethnic groups. In American society, it is evident that certain ethnic groups are singled
out for the problems in our society. Usually those ethnic groups are minorities.

The Democratization of South Korea Long before the hustle and bustle of the big
city, ages afore the creation of one of the world s largest standing militaries, the
Republic of South Korea was one of the farthest governments from a democracy.
Following the Japanese occupation of World War Two, the South Korean
government went through many different forms of authority. According to Jung
Hae Gu, professor of Social Sciences at the University of Sung Kong Hoe in Korea,
and Kim Ho Ki, professor of Sociology at Yonsie University in Korea, the Republic
of Korea has so far went through a total of 6 different regime changes since the
liberation from Japanese occupation (Hae Gu, Ho Ki). The shifts in government
occurred under various regimes, Rhee Syng Man, Park Chung Hee, Chun Doo
Hwan, and the June Uprising of 1987 (Hae Gu, Ho Ki). But the lead up to the
democratization of South Korea has a more fluid past though, one of hardship and
struggle, fluctuation between authoritarian regimes and military run governments.
The pressures that caused the governments to change play a very vital role though
too, they are the forces that shape the government and the ruling nature. The current
ruling democracy was forged by the previous governments and deserves to be
examined and discussed because they are obliviously the ones in charge right now.

Analysis of Pat Mora s La Migra
Pat Mora s La Migra is a poem presenting two speakers, one female and one male,
who are playing the game La Migra which means border patrol agents . Mora creates
a snapshot of the dangers of living near the Mexican border through the narrators
game . The poem is written with childish language, but includes ambiguity of whether
the players are children approaching a disturbingly mature theme or whether they re
adults trying to minimize the stress of the situation. Despite both interpretations
being decently supported by the text, I support the first for a few key reasons.

4) A runner s starting point in a race. The speaker uses marks as a metaphor to her
life. This one word organizes the entire poem by setting the direction, tone, and
meaning of the poem. With its multiple meanings, the word marks plays a significant
role. By analyzing the word marks in the context of the poem, I want to demonstrate
the absolute necessity of that one word in this particular poem.
The woman s life is graded with marks. A mark, meaning grade, is usually
something that has nothing to do with a housewife or a mother. However, in this
poem marks play a vital role in the speaker s identity. Her family gives her grades as
a housewife and a mother. The word marks compares and contrasts her life with
standards that are not her own. Grades are a part of the woman s life, for she is
identified through them. Marks are the result of accomplishing a certain standard
(e.g. 80% is a B, 90% and above is an A, etc). Students strive to get good grades
because good grades equals good student. Grades identify who you are. It doesn t
matter how much time and effort you have spent only the result counts. In this
poem, the woman s entire life is defined and evaluated with grades: for her husband
she is an A, an incomplete, and a B+; for her son she is average; for her daughter
