Abstract One of Director Park Chan Wook s most renowned works is the film Oldboy (2003). At
face value, this film appears to be a regular mystery thriller film. However, after further analysis,
there are many parallels to contemporary Korean history and society. These parallels, or allegories,
become more apparent upon review of the film. The film contains references to Korea s tumultuous
history and contemporary culture, highlighting the multiple disappointments felt by the Korean
people (Seth). The main character Oh Dae su also stands in for the average Korean citizen while
his adversary, Lee Woo jin, represents upper class citizens, or chaebols, in Korea. After analyzing
these points, this paper argues that Oldboy does in fact serve as a socio political allegory for
problems faced in contemporary Korea. Problems that are addressed include democratization, class
structure and privilege, capitalism, and the importance of power and money in Korea (Kim).

The position on the issue is that Congress should close the Guantanamo Bay detention center due to
lack of constitutional rights. In my opinion, these detainees should be subjected to protections of
the Constitutions even though they are enemies of the country. The detainees should not be held
indefinitely without being convicted of a crime. There could be innocent people being detained
suffering from the inhumane conditions. I believe every detainee should be tried, and found guilty
of crime before being imprisoned. However, this conviction should be achieved with the detainee
having legal representation. In the movie, Mandvi did not have legal representation to assist him
proving his innocence nor was he allowed to review the classified documents the tribunal officials
has leaking him to the crime. He does not know how to properly prove to the officials that he is
innocent. Therefore I am confident he was found guilty of the crime, even if he was innocent.
Lastly, the detainees are suffering from inhumane interrogation techniques, such as being sexually

The detainees should not have to suffer from inhumane techniques to retrieve information from

I think it s fair to say that a majority of people in the United States get up every morning with
only miniscule problems to worry about. We are not affected by a crashing economy. We don t
have mass numbers of people starving to the point where they are skin and bone. We don t deal
with people trying to kill us for having different religious views as them. We don t have a
multitude of corrupt groups fighting for power over our nation. We don t wake up surrounded by
damages of the atrocities caused by extremist s bombs. Other countries, however, are not this
fortunate, and Ilya Kaminsky s poem, We Lived Happily During the War does an excellent job of
pointingthis out.
It s clear when reading this poem, the main theme of it is that there are people in this world who
are not nearly as fortunate as us. We feel bad for them and make a big deal out of how horrible
their situation is. Yet, we don t actually go out and do anything worthwhile about it for fear of
losing our own comforting bubble of safety.
The idea of us feeling bad for those in direr situations and crying for something to be done
appears right at the beginning of the poem when it says, And when they bombed other people s
houses, we protested, (Ilya Kaminsky, 1 and 2). This quote is very apparently true to us. The
news, for several years now, has been full of protests saying that we need to offer help to people in
