This document challenges common myths about young English language learners. It summarizes that learning two languages does not cause language delays and knowing more than one language supports learning English. Total English immersion is not the best approach as it can lead to loss of the first language and lower academic achievement. Providing only English instruction is also not recommended as teaching practices that support the native language are beneficial even when teachers don't speak the child's first language. Research shows children who receive learning opportunities in their home language from ages 3-8 consistently outperform those in English-only programs in middle and high school academic achievement in English. The document provides recommendations for supporting students' home languages in the classroom.
