Congenital hypothyroidism fulfills most of the criteria for disease screening as set
out by Wilson and Jungner (Wilson and Jungner 1968), in fact CH is four to five
times more common than Phenylketonuria for which newborn screening was initially
developed (Chiesa, Rivolta, Targovnik, Gruneiro Papendieck 2010).
Detection of CH by neonatal screening has been a major achievement because early
