sustainable development introduction, basics and importanceArcanjo Salazaku
Ā
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
Development encompasses various contexts, including economic, social, political, and psychological. Economic development refers to the sustained increase in a population's standard of living, while social development focuses on improving social indicators like education, healthcare, gender equality, human rights, and overall quality of life. Human development, popularized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), emphasizes the expansion of people's choices and capabilities, including access to education, healthcare, income opportunities, political freedoms, and social services. Political development involves strengthening democracy, governance structures, rule of law, civil liberties, and political rights. Sustainable development integrates economic, social, and environmental considerations to meet present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs.
Sustainable development in education involves the integration of principles and practices that promote long-term environmental, social, and economic sustainability within educational systems and processes. Key aspects of sustainable development in education include a holistic approach, interdisciplinary learning, systems thinking, experiential learning, values and ethics, and partnerships and collaboration between educational institutions, government agencies, civil society organizations, businesses, and local communities.
Several theories and frameworks have been proposed to understand and achieve sustainable development, including Weak vs. Strong Sustainability, Brundtland Report, Ecological Modernization, Limits to Growth, Resilience Theory, Doughnut Economics, Social-Ecological Systems Framework, and Human Development Approach. These theories provide different perspectives on the challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable development, and continue to inform research, policy-making, and practical initiatives aimed at achieving a more sustainable future.

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
Ā
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.
Unveiling the Secrets How Does Generative AI Work.pdfSam H
Ā
At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.
Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Ā
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

2. Standard of living refers to the consumption of goods
and services by an individual. It relates directly to
the economic development whereas the well-being or
quality of life of a population refers to a combination
of attributes that provide physical, mental, spiritual
and social wellbeing.
3. SOME DEFINITIONS :
ā¢āDevelopment that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet
their own needsā.
ā¢Sustainable Development (SD) implies economic growth
together with the protection of environmental quality, each
reinforcing the other. Sustainable Development, thus, is
maintaining a balance between the human needs to improve
lifestyles and feeling of well-being on one hand, and
preserving natural resources and ecosystems, on which we
and future generations depend.
4. A desirable human condition : a society that people want to
sustain because it meets their needs.
A enduring ecosystem condition: an ecosystem that
maintains its capacity to support human life and others.
A balance between present and future generations; and
within the present generation.
ļ INCLUDED:
ļ§ SUSTAINABLE GROWTH
ļ§ SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION
ļ§ SUSTAINABILITY
5. ļ¼ SUSTAINABLE GROWTH
For growth we need resources and the rate of depletion of resources
cannot be matched with the regenerating capacity of earth, as it is
finite, not-growing and materially closed. Therefore, Sustainable
growth is an impossible theorem!
ļ¼ SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION
Sustainable consumption is related to production and distribution, use
and disposal of products and services and provides the means to rethink
our
lifecycle. The aim is to ensure that the basic needs of the entire global
community are met, excess is reduced and environmental damage is
avoided.
ļ¼ SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is the action oriented variant of Sustainable
Development. There are some principles of sustainability which
include the following-
ā¢ Protecting Nature
ā¢ Thinking long-term
ā¢ Recognizing limits
6. Three Pillar Basic Model
This is one of the most well-known models
created using the three dimensions -
Economy, Environment and Society.
The diagram shows three interlocking
circles with the triangle of environmental
(conservation), economic (growth), and
social (equity) dimensions.
Sustainable Development is modelled on
these three pillars. This model is called
āthree pillarsā or' three circles modelā. It is
based considering the society, but does not
explicitly take into account āhuman quality
of lifeā.
social
EconomyEnvironment
Dimensions of sustainability
7. The Sustainabilityā model
It was designed in 1994 by the International Union for the
Conservation of Nature, IUCN.
It illustrates the relationship between people and ecosystem as one
circle inside another, like the yolk of an egg. This implies that
people are within the ecosystem, and that ultimately one is entirely
dependent upon the other. Just as an egg is good only if both the
white and yolk are good, so a society is well and sustainable only if
both, people and the eco-system, are well.
Thus according to this model:
sustainable development = human well-being + ecosystem well-
being
8. Prism of Sustainability
This model was developed by the German Wuppertal
Institute and defines SD with the help of four
components - economy, environment, society and
institution.
In this model the inter-linkages such as
care, access, democracy and eco-efficiency need to
be looked at closely as they show the relation
between the dimensions which could translate and
influence policy. In each dimension of the
prism, there are imperatives. Indicators are used to
measure how far one has actually come in
comparison to the overall vision of SD.
9. ā¢Gross National Happiness (GNH)
ā¢ Human Development Index (HDI)
ā¢ Ecological Footprint (EF)
ā¢The Happy Planet Index (HPI)
10. Gross National Happiness (GNH)
Gross National Happiness (GNH) is an attempt to define quality of life in
a more holistic and psychological terms than Gross National Product.
GNH is based on the assertion that true development of human society
takes place when material and spiritual development occur side by side
to complement and reinforce each other
Four pillars of GNH
ā¢The promotion of equitable and sustainable socio-economic
development,
ā¢ Preservation and promotion of cultural values,
ā¢Conservation of the natural environment,
ā¢Establishment of good governance.
11. Human Development Index (HDI)
The Human Development Index (HDI) is the measure of life
expectancy, literacy, education, and standard of living for
countries worldwide.
Three basic dimensions of human development:
ā¢A long and healthy life
ā¢Knowledge,
ā¢A decent standard of living
12. Measures for Sustainable Development
ā¢Using appropriate Technology
ā¢Reduce, Recycle and Reuse Approach
ā¢Promoting environmental awareness approach
ā¢Resource utilization as per carrying capacity
ā¢Improving quality of life including social, cultural and
economic.
