Enzymes are protein catalysts that increase the rate of biochemical reactions. They function by lowering the activation energy of reactions without being consumed in the process. Enzymes work through binding to specific substrates and facilitating the conversion of substrates to products. Their activity can be affected by factors like temperature, pH, substrate and enzyme concentration. A rise in body temperature above normal could cause enzyme denaturation and loss of function. Without a functional enzyme, the reaction it normally facilitates would slow down or cease.
