The Cloud is a wild and dangerous place and can create seriously unpredictable traffic to your microservices. Without proper protection & monitoring, your microservices are vulnerable to hackers, self-inflicted denial of service attacks, and extremely high infrastructure costs. Furthermore, as internal data centers begin to mirror the Cloud itself, developers and architects need to rethink services monitoring and protection for both externalized microservice APIs and internal APIs. Attend this session to learn what is the right type of protection (OAuth / Throttling) and monitoring (e.g. bot monitoring) you need to put in place to avoid your microservices becoming a mega-disaster.

Ultimate Guide to 30+ API Documentation SolutionsBill Doerrfeld
An API is only as good as its docs, so here is the most comprehensive list of documentation solutions for web APIs to date. These tools convert your Swagger, API Blueprint, RAML, WSDL, or other API specifications into static documentation or interactive API explorers that accelerate developer onboarding. This list covers open source software, licensed software, and API references generated within API management solutions. All will help in generating customizable HTML and CSS to display API methods, parameters, values, requests, responses, code samples, and more.
It’s a common question: how are microservices different from the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) we saw a decade ago? While they might be similar to what SOA advocates support, microservices have proven to deliver impressive developer productivity gains at the largest enterprises, including as Google, Amazon, and Netflix.
Pivotal’s Matt Stine and Apigee’s Alan Ho discuss:
- real-world examples of microservices best practices
- anti-patterns and traps for microservices
- recommendations on tools & technology to help with microservices implementations
APIs provide both an extraordinary opportunity for both building engaging customer experiences and for strengthening your relationship with key business partners, but they also provide potential openings for savvy hackers to get unauthorized access to customer data and perhaps even to compromise your key business systems.
This presentation covers:
- API security fundamentals
- how to proactively watch for trouble
- protection and mitigation strategies to keep your customers and your business safe

APIdays Open Banking & Fintech: Workshop - Financial Services Use Cases for APIsJeremy Brown
This was a fairly high level presentation I did at the APIdays Open Banking and Fintech event in London where I started to explore the main drivers for APIs, the mega trends in consumer banking and the various use cases for APIs within Financial Services.
Power plays for Monetizing Open Banking APIsaccenture
Accenture examines how incumbent banks can use Open Banking as an opportunity to capture significant new revenue streams and efficiencies from the application programming interface (API) economy. Learn more: www.accenture.com/MonetizeOpenBanking
When it comes to facilitating seamless connectivity between various financial systems and apps, APIs lead ahead. Fintech organisations use APIs to connect their platforms to different payment gateways, banking systems, and third-party services in an easy-to-use manner through standardised communication and data exchange techniques. Businesses could enhance service offerings, streamline processes, and give customers a better experience with this integrated approach.
Banks are deploying APIs to offer their customers transparency and new services faster than their traditional infrastructures will allow. PSD2 requires all banks to offer third party access to data and payments. Join this session to learn more about architecture that can provide a scalable front end to allow banks to publish their APIs via AWS, and to integrate with API gateways and core banking platforms.
NEACH Innovating Payments 2018
Today we live in an "API economy" that promises to transform business processes and customer experience. Come to this session to explore how APIs are disrupting and driving innovation in financial services around the globe. Understand the benefits and unknowns of APIs and hear about practical examples of APIs in action. Learn what is happening right here in the U.S from effective API strategies to efforts by Afinis, a membership-based standards governance organization under the NACHA umbrella, and what you should take away to enable richer solutions and improved client experiences at your organization.
The Emergence of Open Banking and COVID-19Sam Ghosh
Think about Google if it were only collecting a lot of data but never used or shared that data with anyone. That is how the traditional financial service companies are - they have enormous amounts of data but rarely use that data for any tangible purpose. Dormant data with the financial service providers can be used to not only create new applications but revolutionize credit markets, personal finance, business finance, wealth management, etc. in ways we cannot even totally envisage now.
Open Banking is a practice where banks provide access to consumer data to non-affiliated third parties generally through Application Programming Interfaces or APIs. Open Banking in the coming years is expected to lead a paradigm shift in Banking and Finance.
During the pandemic, the demand side of the equation for Open Banking is rapidly developing with growth in fintech markets and the adoption of digital channels by the consumers.
Both banks and tech companies have immense incentives to grab this opportunity and quickly tap the growth in digital markets and channels.
Concerns about data security, compliance with privacy laws, and regulatory uncertainties are acting as impediments to the growth of Open Banking.
Banks need to act quickly to leverage data to increase their reach and role. Traditional banking is rapidly getting commoditized and banks need to add data-driven value-added services in their portfolio to remain relevant. Value-added services such as personal financial planning, the alternative credit assessment, and real-time payments can not only create new revenue sources for the banks but provide strategic moats in the competitive landscape. Banks can achieve this through strategic partnerships and acquisitions. In-house development is difficult given the cultural shift needed in the banking sector may take time. Apart from that, the IT in the banking sector is generally focussed on regulatory requirements and not data-driven, customer-focused as required for Open Banking initiatives.
Policy uncertainty can severely hamper the growth of Open Banking. Policymakers need to balance caution on security-privacy matters but at the same time clear policy confusion to allow the sector to grow.
As per the Akamai report, “2020 State of the Internet / Security: Financial Services – Hostile Takeover Attempts”, cyber attackers are increasingly targeting API endpoints of financial services.
As per a Gartner report, by 2021, APIs will account for 90% of the attack surface. By 2022, according to Gartner, API abuses will become the most-frequent attack vector.
This is a cause of concern for the Banks contemplating opening up data access using APIs.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
