In 2014-15, the University of Liverpool’s Library Service embarked upon a three-part usability study to better understand how library users were engaging with our resource discovery platform (EBSCO’s Discovery Service), to identify any usability issues and assess the extent to which it was currently meeting their needs. This in turn enabled us to make informed, evidence-based changes to the interface, improving its overall usability and providing a more user-friendly, intuitive, effective and efficient resource. In this paper we will examine the methodologies employed, what we found and the changes subsequently made to the interface.

EDS across the pond
On May 10-11th, Katherine attended the first annual EBSCO User Group meet in the US city of Boston. Katherine was there on the invitation of the EBSCO User Group committee, made up of university librarians and EBSCO staff. This two day conference was inspired by the UK and Nordic user groups and this first meet-up was a great opportunity for Librarians from all over the US to come together and talk about how they are using EDS. Katherine an update on the major topics and trends which came up in the conference, and give some insight into the role of the EBSCO User Group in the US and the differences between the US and UK usage of EDS, and this lead into a wider discussion about changing role of Librarians in the UK and US.

In the 21st century the academic library supports both research activities and teaching outcomes of faculty members and students through web-scale discovery services. These discovery services embrace new technologies to provide deep discovery of vast scholarly collections from a one-stop access interface, relying on a central index of pre-harvested data. With unified indexing of full-text library content, users’ experience of search and retrieval is greatly improved.
Discovery is changing the way that library users find and access library materials, especially electronic resources. In the opening part of this presentation, I will share my experiences of using different discovery systems – Summon, Primo and Enterprise – in my current and previous roles, in term of differences, strengths and common areas among these tools. Relevant findings from the literature and latest research reports will be sketched. I will also speak of how technical services teams can support the next generation of discovery systems that will help the progress of the digital library field. The presentation will conclude with the approach of technical services towards future discovery.

Social Networks and Relational Capital in Library Service Assessment
This paper will argue that social network theory offers a rich conceptual and methodological framework for understanding the relational value of library services, particularly in emerging engagement-centered views of librarianship. Although activity- and outcome-based models of assessment are still important in the assessment of library activities, a social network view of library relationships is an essential complement in providing a more complete view of library value and will complement other work in this area such as human capital valuation and the relational capital components of the values scorecard. Relational aspects of library value are, at present, understudied. Furthermore, this paper will discuss practical approaches for applying concepts from social network analysis in the assessment of library services.

This document discusses developing a matrix and using self-reported scoring to measure librarian engagement on campus. It describes the campus population at Ohio University which has 23,000 students and awards over 8,000 degrees per year. It then outlines a campus relationship matrix developed to capture the work of librarians and measure their progress in three levels - emergent, generative, and productive. Examples of productive relationships include co-authored grants and publications. Results from the first year of implementation showed 26 emergent relationships, 20 generative relationships, and 15 productive relationships. The goal for the upcoming year is to continue discussions around engagement levels and examples.

EDS across the pond
On May 10-11th, Katherine attended the first annual EBSCO User Group meet in the US city of Boston. Katherine was there on the invitation of the EBSCO User Group committee, made up of university librarians and EBSCO staff. This two day conference was inspired by the UK and Nordic user groups and this first meet-up was a great opportunity for Librarians from all over the US to come together and talk about how they are using EDS. Katherine an update on the major topics and trends which came up in the conference, and give some insight into the role of the EBSCO User Group in the US and the differences between the US and UK usage of EDS, and this lead into a wider discussion about changing role of Librarians in the UK and US.

In the 21st century the academic library supports both research activities and teaching outcomes of faculty members and students through web-scale discovery services. These discovery services embrace new technologies to provide deep discovery of vast scholarly collections from a one-stop access interface, relying on a central index of pre-harvested data. With unified indexing of full-text library content, users’ experience of search and retrieval is greatly improved.
Discovery is changing the way that library users find and access library materials, especially electronic resources. In the opening part of this presentation, I will share my experiences of using different discovery systems – Summon, Primo and Enterprise – in my current and previous roles, in term of differences, strengths and common areas among these tools. Relevant findings from the literature and latest research reports will be sketched. I will also speak of how technical services teams can support the next generation of discovery systems that will help the progress of the digital library field. The presentation will conclude with the approach of technical services towards future discovery.

This paper will argue that social network theory offers a rich conceptual and methodological framework for understanding the relational value of library services, particularly in emerging engagement-centered views of librarianship. Although activity- and outcome-based models of assessment are still important in the assessment of library activities, a social network view of library relationships is an essential complement in providing a more complete view of library value and will complement other work in this area such as human capital valuation and the relational capital components of the values scorecard. Relational aspects of library value are, at present, understudied. Furthermore, this paper will discuss practical approaches for applying concepts from social network analysis in the assessment of library services.

Evaluating the Impact of Academic Skills Support @ Edge Hill University
Edge Hill University implemented several initiatives to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of its academic skills support programs. This included using an AMOSSHE toolkit to evaluate student satisfaction, impact of skills gained, and value for money. Impact surveys sent 4-6 weeks after support found self-reported changes in student confidence, behavior, and grades. The university also introduced a peer review framework for its learning services teams to support staff development and quality of services.

How students *really* do research - Findings from the Research Confession Booth

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- The topic of my presentation this morning is “Enhancing the Usability of Libraries”. I am going to discuss some theoretical approaches to usability and some practical examples from my own library and other libraries. I hope that you will all be prompted, even inspired, to take a fresh look at the usability of your own libraries and hopefully come away with a few examples you can borrow and adapt. I am also hoping to pick up some ideas from you to take back to my library.
