On May 10-11th, Katherine attended the first annual EBSCO User Group meet in the US city of Boston. Katherine was there on the invitation of the EBSCO User Group committee, made up of university librarians and EBSCO staff. This two day conference was inspired by the UK and Nordic user groups and this first meet-up was a great opportunity for Librarians from all over the US to come together and talk about how they are using EDS. Katherine an update on the major topics and trends which came up in the conference, and give some insight into the role of the EBSCO User Group in the US and the differences between the US and UK usage of EDS, and this lead into a wider discussion about changing role of Librarians in the UK and US.

In the 21st century the academic library supports both research activities and teaching outcomes of faculty members and students through web-scale discovery services. These discovery services embrace new technologies to provide deep discovery of vast scholarly collections from a one-stop access interface, relying on a central index of pre-harvested data. With unified indexing of full-text library content, users’ experience of search and retrieval is greatly improved. Discovery is changing the way that library users find and access library materials, especially electronic resources. In the opening part of this presentation, I will share my experiences of using different discovery systems – Summon, Primo and Enterprise – in my current and previous roles, in term of differences, strengths and common areas among these tools. Relevant findings from the literature and latest research reports will be sketched. I will also speak of how technical services teams can support the next generation of discovery systems that will help the progress of the digital library field. The presentation will conclude with the approach of technical services towards future discovery.

How search results became 'the new black'

For students conducting research, the traditional linear navigation model of search form to results to detailed record has served as a consistent, gold standard. Today’s students are abandoning traditional paths, embracing a new behavior Jakob Nielsen’s team calls “page parking” and moving full-steam ahead with heightened expectations for the search results page. On this new results page experience – what was once a pass-through en route to detailed information about a product or service – has become the singular page that matters most: the required basic; the new black. Attendees will also learn the difference between what students call a “good” search result and how this compares to what librarians’ favor. Join EBSCO’s Sr. UX Researcher, Lin Lin, to learn more about students’ digital ecosystems and gain a deeper understanding of user needs at that critical juncture.

The student search experience

The design and delivery of university learning is evolving to meet the changing needs of today’s students and researchers. The new user experience is a personal experience: PX is the new UX. One size fits one; students are seeking an experience that suits their own individual needs in their search journey. Starting with the spike of anxiety that sets in when a research assignment is given, following through the open web searching and then navigating the library’s resources, Lin Lin of EBSCO Information Services will discuss the insights derived while studying today’s students in depth, and how students’ approaches to research impacts the librarian-student relationship.

Discovering discovery

SONY DSC Discovering Discovery: what we learnt about our students (and ourselves!) Jeff Woods, Usage Analyst Elizabeth Gillespie, Subscriptions Manager University of Liverpool Library In 2014-15, the University of Liverpool’s Library Service embarked upon a three-part usability study to better understand how library users were engaging with our resource discovery platform (EBSCO’s Discovery Service), to identify any usability issues and assess the extent to which it was currently meeting their needs. This in turn enabled us to make informed, evidence-based changes to the interface, improving its overall usability and providing a more user-friendly, intuitive, effective and efficient resource. In this paper we will examine the methodologies employed, what we found and the changes subsequently made to the interface.

A tale of two systems - Library Plus and Discover

In the autumn of 2013 the University of Derby Library launched Library Plus, our name for the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), aimed exclusively at HE students. The Library launched a second EDS tool named Discover in 2015, used by FE and Access Students attending our partner organisation Buxton & Leek College. As a member of the working team involved in the implementation of Discover, I had the opportunity to help set up, design and test a new EDS tool from scratch. This presentation will describe how Discover was created, the problems I encountered during implementation, and the successes and lessons I learnt from introducing EDS in an FE institution. Discover also presented the Library with new opportunities to look at the functionality of Library Plus, and how to promote it more effectively to our HE students. It also highlights the challenges of maintaining two similar, but altogether different EDS systems, for the needs of an increasingly diverse student body.

EBSCO Discovery Services: update and roadmap

EBSCO Discovery Service is significant in its ability to expose relevant results to your library users. Its means of doing this is unique, but EBSCO recognises that the requirements of libraries and demands of library users evolves rapidly. Richard will share road map items for EBSCO Discovery Service, highlighting how changing research habits are impacting upcoming user interface features. In addition, Richard will share details of the Holdings and Link Management (HLM) administration area and how it is evolving into a tool that does so much more than managing your holdings for EDS and Full Text Finder – from consolidating COUNTER statistics to providing Cost per Use analysis to Collection Analysis to tracking licenses and other key resource details.

Is what's 'trending' what¹s worth purchasing?

Presenters: Stacy Konkiel, Outreach & Engagement Manager, Altmetric Rachel Miles, Kansas State University Libraries Sarah Sutton, Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University New forms of usage data like altmetrics are helping librarians to make smarter decisions about their collections. A recent nationwide study administered to 13,000+ librarians at R1 universities shines light on exactly how these metrics are being applied in academia. This presentation will share survey results, including as-yet-unknown rates of technology and metrics uptake among collection development librarians, the most popular citation databases and altmetrics services being used to make decisions, and surprising factors that affect attitudes toward the use of metrics. This presentation will also offer actionable insights on how altmetrics are being paired with bibliometrics and usage statistics to form a more complete picture of “trending” scholarship that’s worth purchasing. Through sharing the survey results and opening up a discussion about the potential altmetrics hold for informing collection development, the presenters aim to provide a learning opportunity for attendees which will enhance their competencies for e-resource management, specifically, core competence for e-resource librarians 3.5, use of bibliometrics for collection assessment, and 3.7, identity and analyze emerging technologies.

Tablets present many opportunities to enhance and increase library instruction, but it is unclear if library databases can rise to the challenge of tablet use. In our study, we used an iPad and tested the functionality of specific tasks that may be used in a library instruction setting: presentation of the page, access to multimedia content, database specific tools, email full text, and separate app/installation requirements. This session will explore the nitty gritty of using tablets for library instruction, leading to a better understanding of the future of mobile tablet classrooms

Meggie Wright, Oregon State University Nate Otto, Indiana University The Mozilla Foundation’s Open Badges are a new technology that makes it possible for anyone to issue, earn, and display proof of an educational achievement. Open Badges are digital tokens, like merit badges you might receive in the real world. They can be displayed on websites, job sites, and social media. Badges can be used to tell a clear, verifiable story about learning accomplishments, something that degrees and resumes often fail to do. Badges are shaking up education wherever and whenever learning happens, including in libraries. In this digital workshop, find out how badges work, set up a “backpack,” earn your first badge, and think about how this technology may impact our institutions’ roles in the learning ecosystem.

Presenter: Lettie Conrad, Executive Program Manager, Discovery & Product Analysis, SAGE Publishing When considering academic researchers’ information-seeking and retrieval needs, we often focus on search – optimizing for search, Google-like search for libraries, user preferences for one-box quick-search tools, and so on. But what about unplanned instances of discovery? Are new technologies, such as text mining and natural language processing, enabling new pathways that lead researchers to relevant material, perhaps even leading to surprising new connections across disciplines? Conversely, with the prevalence of satisficing, does serendipity even play a role when searching for information about a scholarly topic?_x000D_ Through a study of undergraduate students and their faculty members, as well as a survey of publisher and website offerings, this talk will summarize common user pathways and how today’s students and faculty use content recommendation tools with recommendations for how libraries and the scholarly communications community might respond.

In the fall of 2010, Illinois Wesleyan University reviewed all the major web-scale discovery tools available to libraries. We chose to be a beta-test site for EBSCO’s Discovery Service (EDS) and conducted usability testing with students. We eventually purchased EDS and did a full roll-out this past fall semester. This presentation will address the philosophy behind web-scale discovery along with our experiences regarding selection, testing, implementation, evaluation, and teaching. The presentation will also include live search demonstrations using Wesleyan’s EDS interface.

Text mining 101 what you should know

Presenters: Patricia Cleary, Global eProduct Development Manager, Springer Kristen Garlock, ITHAKA/JSTOR Denise D Novak, Acquisitions Librarian, Carnegie Mellon University Ethen Pullman, Carnegie Mellon University Academic libraries and publishers are fielding an increasing number of faculty/researcher text mining requests. This program will address these needs and offer some best practices. Specific examples from academic libraries will highlight the administrative and technical issues, while the resource provider perspective will focus on the challenges of rights management clearance and how to deliver the information, as well as the publisher philosophy on supporting digital scholarship efforts. The session will capture the issues from both sides and provide attendees with a framework for handling requests at their own institutions. In keeping with the theme "Embracing New Horizons" we will use this time to explore possibilities for better communication around digital scholarship issues, and the development of best practices, through appropriate channels.

Embracing Undergraduate Research; Creating the 'Arsenal'

The Center for Undergraduate Research (CURS) at Georgia Regents University (soon to be Augusta University) offers strong support for faculty-led undergraduate research. In collaboration with a student organization, the program director of CURS contacted the GRU Libraries to investigate how to start an undergraduate research journal for the university and identify a venue for publishing undergraduate research. Since the University Libraries recently helped develop an open-access journal for the College of Education, which is hosted in the institutional repository, two librarians were able to utilize this experience and provide guidance to CURS and the student organization. They worked together on the creation of Arsenal: The Undergraduate Research Journal of Georgia Regents University (Augusta University),a new open access journal specifically aimed at publishing undergraduate research of current students. This session will discuss the process of establishing the journal’s identity, developing policies and processes, hosting and publishing the journal, as well as some of the challenges faced. Librarians are increasingly being asked to engage with bibliometrics to help with institutional decision making. However, few have professional qualifications in this area and there is an onus on universities to do metrics responsibly. A small project supported by the Lis-Bibliometrics forum and Elsevier Research Intelligence Division is developing a set of bibliometric competency statements to ensure practitioners are equipped to do their work responsibly and well. This workshop will report on progress to date and invite input into the project.

Ordinarily, it is difficult to generalize operational research conducted at one library to the environment of another. Different survey instruments, user populations, and sampling techniques make direct comparisons difficult. Despite these clear differences, libraries continue to use this literature to plan new services. There is a clear need to establish a baseline for comparison. The use of web server log statistical reports and other web analytics may offer this baseline. Such reports are now available to most libraries, and offer a rich, and consistent, look at library user behavior. This data tells a rich story about library use, and offers a valid point of comparison between institutions. The Orbis-Cascade Alliance Research Interest Group presents these initial results as our first collaborative effort. We argue that differences between institutional environments that have long been assumed are now clearly visible in simple metrics such as most-viewed pages, point-of-entry, and peak hours. These points of comparison are analyzed for three types of Alliance libraries: a public and a private four year residential campus, and an urban commuter university. The analysis offers empirical evidence of the commonalities and differences between these member libraries.

Nottingham Trent University and Alexander Street have partnered to pilot an in-depth view on analytics, demonstrating user engagement and impact of use. They will share findings on how e-resources were used and how these analytics can go beyond simple cost-per-use evaluation to support effective decision making on the marketing and promotion of resources and improve our understanding of how library users are engaging with the resources we provide.

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
