This essay compares the animated films Wreck-It Ralph and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Both films begin with a flashback establishing the backstory of the main character who is disliked by others. They take place in settings resembling candy wonderlands during the rising action. Objects that seemed useless initially end up helping to save the day. Overall, the films convey messages about believing in oneself and achieving goals through determination and optimism.

From the ‘genius villain’ that is Richard III to the ‘wannabe villain, Macbeth’ — not forgetting Hamlet, Iago and Shylock — Berkoff explores some of the Bard’s most notorious characters in a performance that is part masterclass in Shakespearean acting, part stand-up comedy and part academic analysis.
Considered to be one of Steven Berkoff’s best dramatizations, The Tell Tale Heart is based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe. First published in 1843 and widely held to be a classic of the Gothic fiction genre, it tells the gruesome tale of a lonely servant who plots to kill an old man because of his evil ‘vulture’ eye. The murder is carefully planned, with the body dismembered and hidden under the floorboards.

Drama into Film:
The Shaffer Situation
C.l. GIANAKARIS
Close observers of theatre hardly can be faulted for their curiosity, if not
downright concern, when a significant work for the stage is adapted for the
movie screen. Transplanting plays to film always has been chancy, with rather
more misses than hits. One can point to exceptions, of course, such as movies
made of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night, Tennessee
Williams's Streetcar Named Desire, John Osborne's The Entertainer, Harold
Pinter's Betrayal, Anthony Shaffer's Sleuth, Ronald Harwood's The Dresser,
and a handful of others. But even in these instances, the acclaim typically is
critical rather than popular in the commercial sense. 1 While one lists successes
such as these, one also must be conscious of the far greater number of
disappointing movie adaptations made from hit dramas.
Nor, incidentally, is the general situation much different with novels on the
screen. Possibly the more amorphous shapes of fiction permit the novel to be
"massaged" more readily to fit requirements of the film medium. That capacity
would help to explain why movies based on novels have proved aesthetically
satisfying with greater frequency. The success ratio of fiction into film
therefore stands arguably higher than that of drama. 2 The irony is unavoidable,
then, that despite obvious affinities of dialogue, scenic structure, and the rest,
drama ends up more resistant than fiction to the format of motion pictures. 3
Why are dramas so difficult to transfer happily to the silver screen? What
unique hurdles stand before a screenwriter when adapting a proven stage
vehicle for the movies? If the conceptual essence is cored out in a film version,
why would (or should) a successful writer submit his creations to commercial
moviemakers? Or, stated differently, what aesthetic compensations make it
worthwhile for a distinguished author to relinquish his work to Hollywood?
These questions form the general subject of our discussion.
The larger issue of interconnected cinematic aesthetics and techniques
admittedly invites abstract theorizing, a problem we hope to avert by tightening

our focus to a single major writer and his situation. As case in point, we shall
center our attention on the plays of Peter Shaffer. More explicitly, Amadeus
will serve as our chief illustration among Shaffer's plays, because it recently
was adapted into a high-budget motion picture under the guidance of
Academy-Award-winning director Milos Forman. Our concentration on the
Shaffer situation should permit us, through a process of induction, to reach
answers to some of the broader questions posed above. Further, focusing on
Shaffer allows us rich examples with which to work. First, Shaffer already has
distinguished himself as one of .

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Comparison of Two Animated Films
Animated films are films whereby individual drawings, paintings, or illustrations
are photographed frame by frame. This is known as cinematography. Animated films
are usually appealed to children but it is also adored by all walks of life. This essay will
be a comparison of two computer-animated comedy films namely Wreck-It Ralph &
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball. Wreck-It Ralph is about an imagination of a world
where arcade game characters have their own lives. Ralph is a video game villain who
wishes to someday be the hero. While on his quest, he accidentally unleashes a deadly
enemy that in turn threatens the arcade. As for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball, it is
about a local clumsy scientist that invented a machine that can make food fall from the
sky to save the town’s economy. Disastrously, his invention turned out to be a total
catastrophe. Both these movies share some similarities whereby the beginning of the
movies started off with a flashback, the way people feel towards the main characters,
the setting of the rising actions and the fact that something useless could turn out to
save the day.
First and foremost, the beginning of both movies started off with a flashback. In
the movie Wreck-It Ralph, the main character Ralph expresses what he has been doing
for the past 30 years in the arcade and mentioning that the games has come and go
throughout the years. Day in, day out, he has been the bad guy doing the same thing
in the arcade game, Fix-It Felix Jr. He may have the strength to wreck things but he
possesses a kind heart and soul. Ralph has always wanted to turn things around to be
the hero but it never happened. Identically, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball portrays
Flint in his tender age in class carrying out a project demonstration of his new
invention, spray on shoes. His uplifting spirit about the spray on shoes was later
dampened as his classmates teased him because the shoes could not be taken off.
Both the flashbacks in the movies gave the audience an insight of their past.
Another similarity shown in Wreck-It Ralph & Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball is
3. 3
that the people dislike both the main characters initially because they keep bringing
chaos to where they live. However, all they have within them are positive intentions. As
stated earlier, Ralph’s role is the wicked guy so everyone else sees him as the mean
and menacing. Having the title as the villain in the game, people automatically have a
negative impression of Ralph throughout the years. When the others are celebrating
the game’s 30th
anniversary, Ralph discovers that he wasn’t invited. Likewise, in Cloudy
with a Chance of Meatball, Flint has made many inventions which all ended up as a
failure. Despites his downfall, hopeful Flint has dreams of saving his community’s
economy. He invented a machine that causes food to fall from the sky. In spite of that,
his creation disappointed him once again and his community as the machine led to
numerous damages in the first half of the movie.
Furthermore, the settings of rising actions of these movies are located at a sweet
treat-like wonderland. Mostly pinky sweet treats blanketed and dominated the setting.
Both of the wonderlands look picturesque. The rising action of Wreck-It Ralph took
place at an arcade kart-racing game, Sugar Rush. Ralph accidentally ends up in that
game and this is where he meets a glitch character, Vanellope. Majority of Sugar Rush
is filled and dotted with various types of candies. In the same manner, Cloudy with a
Chance of Meatball exhibits Flint’s invention that has caused scoops of ice creams to
fall from the sky, making the whole community a dessert like wonderland. Both of these
locations created a lively and jubilant atmosphere.
Besides those similarities, Ralph and Flint underestimated a certain object in the
beginning. They never thought that the useless object actually turned out to lend them
a hand in the end. The object that became valuable towards the end in Wreck-It Ralph
is Vanellope’s go-kart. King Candy convinces Ralph that Vanellope brings danger to
everyone. Ralph destroys her cart and later witnessed her image on the side of Sugar
Rush and realizes she’s not the villain but the hero of the game. He heads back to undo
the damage he has done. For Sugar Rush to become a likable arcade game,
Vanellope’s go-kart must pass the finishing line so that it activates. Determinately,
Vanellope’s go-kart was reassembled and she became the star. Another interesting fact
4. 4
to add on is that Antonio Gaudi, the famous architect, inspired the buildings in Sugar
Rush. By the same token, Flint’s spray on shoes that was once made fun of by his
classmates became useful eventually. His food machine that somehow worked later on
went out of control and would not stop supplying endless food. That being the case, a
food avalanche attacked the community. In such a crucial moment, he thought of his
spray on shoes and used the formula to make the food machine stop.
As a final point, both these movies share similarities in terms of how the
beginning started off, how the people express their feelings towards about Ralph and
Flint, the location of the rising actions as well as how hopeless objects could become
the hero. These two movies left a valuable message where we can learn a thing or two.
Wreck-It Ralph and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatball conveys a message of how if
you believe that you can fulfill your goal and if you take the initiative to strive, your
effort would bring you to where you imagine. It is also a touching moment to see both
the movies with a delightful ending where the people finally appreciated their efforts. I
feel that this is something we can all apply to in our lives that is to have faith in our
capabilities and to be optimistic.
