Emotional intelligence involves two minds - the rational mind and emotional mind. Salovey and Mayer coined the term "emotional intelligence" in 1990 to describe one's ability to monitor their own and others' emotions. Daniel Goleman argued that IQ alone is not a predictor of success and distinguished between emotional intelligence and competence. There are three main models of emotional intelligence - the ability model involving perceiving, using, understanding and managing emotions; the trait model involving self-perceptions; and Goleman's mixed model focusing on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. High emotional intelligence involves accurately perceiving emotions, understanding emotional knowledge, and reflectively regulating emotions.
