2. INTRODUCTION
• Innovative information technology applications are pivotal in driving growth and efficiency in today's
dynamic business landscape. Leveraging cutting-edge tools for decision-making is paramount, with
emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) and decision support systems (DSS) offering new
opportunities.
• The synergy of basic approaches using DSS, social platforms, and spatial data processing introduces new
perspectives for applying immersive technologies and impacting business-related decision-making
processes in modern enterprises with tools that typically have not been seen combined before.
3. VR PLATFORMS AND DSS IMPLEMENTATION IN BUSINESS
• Social VR platforms provide an immersive and interactive user experience. Although some platforms do not
always require VR, they typically rely on this technology as the content consumption medium. Such platforms
include Bigscreen, ChilloutVR, Meta Horizon, Microsoft Mesh, Mozilla Hubs, Resonite, Sansar, VRChat, and
more.
• Social VR platforms can be helpful for businesses involving recreational and informative activities in tourism,
marketing, entertainment, surgery, mechanical engineering, robotics, military, education, and other fields [1,
p. 67; 5, p. 12].
• Some platforms provide toolkits to upload custom content, e.g., using the Unity engine [4, p. 4].
• DSS provides the user with additional data management and processing tools for improved analysis of the
alternatives to help the user decide by using recommendations.
• Integrating social VR platforms and DSS holds a vast potential for business applications. This powerful
combination offers unprecedented insights and opportunities, paving the way for transformative strategic
decision-making.
4. VR DSS: APPLICATION AND MODELING
• An example of using social VR platforms and DSS lies in viewing digital twins representing tourist
attractions within virtual worlds. Users engage in immersive exploration of these virtual environments
through social VR platforms like VRChat, interacting with digital twins to gain firsthand experiences
based on their real-life equivalents.
• According to the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) diagram made for such a system, in the
context of the involved tasks, we can consider the following three lanes:
o social VR platform providing access to publishing and viewing custom-made virtual worlds;
o VR DSS overlay, created using a game engine, such as Unity or Unreal Engine, that provides an additional user
interface layer powered by software modules to provide data management;
o database management system (DBMS) as a tool used for saving and retrieving object evaluations and additional
user data — such systems include, for example, Amazon DynamoDB, Google Cloud Firestore, and MongoDB.
8. CONCLUSIONS
• In conclusion, the research highlights the transformative potential of integrating social VR platforms with DSS in business
decision-making. A BPMN model simulation was also created for this research to understand this approach better. Through
the exploration of this innovative fusion, several key findings have emerged:
o The combination of VR and DSS offers a unique way of providing opportunities for immersive and data-driven decision-making
experiences. By leveraging automated tools that process large volumes of data, the represented system provides significant
potential for VR applications in business in replacement or addition to traditional approaches.
o While the presented example focuses on the application in tourism, this study underscores the importance of understanding
the implications of this integration for various industries. From tourism to marketing, entertainment, and beyond, the synthesis
of VR and DSS can be used in various fields, utilizing social media for recreational and educative activities.
• This approach has considerable potential for further research and exploration. Future studies could delve into creating or
refining existing VR-DSS integration models, exploring new use cases across different sectors, and addressing any challenges
or limitations encountered in implementation.
• The research findings underscore the transformative impact of integrating VR platforms with DSS in business. By embracing
this innovative approach, organizations can unlock new opportunities, drive efficiency, and stay ahead in the modern
competitive landscape.
