Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.
This presentation was provided by Racquel Jemison, Ph.D., Christina MacLaughlin, Ph.D., and Paulomi Majumder. 2. Characters – person, animal, even a thing or
imaginary creature in the story
Setting – When and where the story takes
place
Plot – chain of events that make up the story,
play, or narrative poem
Theme – meaning of the story, the central
message
3. Writers- aim to make their readers intimate
with their characters.
Character- must be representative of a large
type of humanity
Two general types of characters:
1. Static character – remains unchanged
throughout the narrative
2. Dynamic character – changes because of the
effect of circumstances or people upon him
or her.
4. Setting- Camoruco Hamlet in Guarico,
Venezuela
Types of People= Rebels – equipped guns ;
Revolutionary Officers – possessed machetes
(Both parties are kept hidden from the public)
People are not ready for democracy- they
lack education and was guided by the chosen
party. They began to distrust the electorates
since they knew that war is going to happen.
5. - After the youth tells the leaders to spy onTHE
TRADGEDY OF THE OLD MAN HAPPENED
- their enemy’s base. After they agreeded, the
youth went out to search but suddenly, the
old man appeared.
- After the old man says to the youth’s mother
as vaquero (an arrogant and selfless woman
which is a spy in disguise), the youth kills the
old man by his machete.
6. Refers to the time and place in the story and the early
stories, there wasn’t a definitive setting (ex. Once
upon a time).
Modern Fiction- brings the setting into living relation
with the action and the character.
It has many uses:
1. Setting in harmony with action and character
(Funeral- description deepens mourner’s emotion)
2. Setting in effective contrast to character and action
(Quiet setting in 1st 2 story paragraphs= contrasts
w/ the violence that happens)
3. Setting determining action (Description of a
coastline full of sharp, jagged rocks and swirling
waters)
7. Crown shyness – images show a separation of
tree’s crown to possibly avoid spread of leaf-
eating critters.
8. Expanded definition – can be constructed
from the basic formal dictionary definition. It
will also have the same basic elements-term,
class, and differentiating characteristics
9. The freedom to express one’s opinions is a
privilege enjoyed by people living under a
democracy.
Examples: In my opinion, In my eyes, To my
mind, As far as I am concerned, Speaking
personally, etc.
10. Feminist literary criticism – the focus is on
the gender relationships of character.
Marxist literary criticism – focuses on the
class conflict portrayed in the story
11. Mme. Loisel is unhappy because she could
have been born as a upper class since she
hated their food, a modest but not
uncomfortable lifestyle, home and lack of top
cloths and jewels.
The 2 problems she had before going before
the ball is having nothing to wear a good
cloth and a jewelry for the event.
12. The problem they dealt after the ball ended
was losing Mme Forestier’s necklace. As a
result, rather than telling the truth to her, the
Loisel buys an identical one from Jewelry’s
downpayment to return for her, in exchange
their happiness and living a poverty life.
In the end, Mme. Forestier informs Mme.
Loisel that her necklace is just a fake jewelry
