This article presents a model for understanding how digital technologies can support personalized learning in schools. The model identifies four key learning spaces that impact students' educational experiences: 1) personal learning space, 2) teaching space, 3) school space, and 4) living space. These spaces are currently not well understood, so informal and formal learning is not fully acknowledged or assessed. The article then validates the model using evidence from multiple research projects involving interviews, surveys, and classroom observations. It concludes that to create effective personalized learning using digital technologies, schools must understand how the different learning spaces interact and respond to students' perceptions and behaviors within those spaces. Personalized learning allows tailoring education to individual students and building their opportunities and life chances.
