Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a relatively recent online learning phenomenon that has developed in the last five years. The opportunity that MOOCs offer to developing countries has generated significant interest from higher education as it has opened doors to step into territories that were never available before this era. This paper reports on the research findings of the impact of MOOCs in developing countries. The key challenges and opportunities identified by the researchers in using the MOOC concept within the Sri Lankan higher education context is discussed. It also highlights how developing countries can transform education, and provide lifelong learning opportunities which will give access to learning resources, innovative learning technologies, higher engagement and collaborative learning opportunities with international experts.

Improving technology, changing students, challenging finances, and alternative credentialing sources have all combined to create an online learning boom in higher education. For liberal arts colleges, online learning promises to enhance the curriculum by moving some tasks online to allow for more active learning face-to-face, increasing student time on task, connecting study abroad or internship students back to campus, adding curricular resources, or expanding access to liberal education. Whatever the motivation for considering online learning, liberal arts colleges are forging new ground in bringing the liberal arts educational model--highly interactive, close work between students and faculty--into an online context. Institute of Research Design for Librarianship (IRDL), is a three-year project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in the United States, which seeks to provide professional development opportunities and a support system for academic librarians who want to improve their research skills and increase their research output. We have recently completed the first nine-day Institute for 25 librarians from all over the country, and we would like to share our experience with the international community, hoping to generate more interest and encourage more discussion on practitioner research in LIS.

CSR and Strategy
In the not so distant past, corporate social responsibility was often viewed as a corporate burden—one that could easily be fulfilled through an annual company event, with proceeds going to a local charity. Thankfully, those days are gone, as companies acknowledge that the environmental, social and economic impacts they have on their communities require a more concerted effort at playing nice and doing good.
CSR in Not for Profit Organisations
Today, not for profit sector (NFP) sector is growing in importance all over the world; and it is bigger than people generally realize. It is estimated that the sector comprises around 40% of Europe’s GDP.
In the world, there is an unknown number of such organizations. For example, estimates suggest that there are 1 million to 2 million NFPs in India alone. They may be government institutions, large charities (like WWF) or very small organizations.
One of the distinguishing features of NFPs is that there is normally a disconnection between the acquisition of resources and their use. This means that the money to provide the services does not come from the recipient of those services.
Csr in the Digital Era
The digital age has paved way for a dynamic era of corporate communication. Everything from blogs and RSS feeds to webinars and social media give organizations new tools with which to interact directly with their stakeholders. Such interactive communications are often referred to as viral, because ideas and opinions spread through the network via word‐of‐mouth and are usually perceived as highly trustworthy sources.
Csr is a win/win approach
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has recently turned into a buzz word that is trending among all the savvy oil and gas companies all over the world. These companies are frequently caught publicizing the contributions they make to the economic development of their hosting communities, which focuses on ethical, philanthropic, and environmental practices.
It is in this way that both the corporate sector and local societies can benefit from the CSR, which offers a space for a win-win outcome for both involved entities. It is one of the key CSR fundamentals to enrich both a company and its hosting community simultaneously. The intended win-win scenario entails that companies reflect on actual communal needs and address them in cooperation with affected societies.
Ethics and Corruption
Corruption is “giving or obtaining advantage through means which are illegitimate, immoral, and/or inconsistent with one’s duty or the rights of others.”
Our modern understanding of business ethics notes that following culturally accepted norms is not always the ethical choice.
Ethics and Safety
Laws and regulations largely inform individuals what they cannot do, but ethics instruct individuals and organization as to what they should do. Ethics are about doing the right thing, not about not doing the wrong thing, he explains.
Wachter supports a “safety management systems approach” in the workplace, that is, recognizing the unsafe acts, unsafe conditions and accidents are all symptoms of problems in the organizational management system.
CSR Performance
It should be clear that the determination of good performance is dependent upon the perspective from which that performance is being considered and that what one stakeholder grouping might consider to be good performance may very well be considered by another grouping to be poor performance (Child 1984). The evaluation of performance therefore for a business depends not just upon the identification of adequate means of measuring that performance but also upon the determination of what good performance actually consists of.
Sustainability
Sustainability encourages businesses to frame decisions in terms of environmental, social, and human impact for the long-term, rather than on short-term gains such as next quarter's earnings report. It influences them to consider more factors than simply the immediate profit or loss involved. Increasingly, companies have issued sustainability goals such as commitment to zero-waste packaging by a certain year, or to reduce overall emissions by a certain percentage.
These companies can achieve their sustainable needs by cutting emissions, lowering their energy usage, sourcing products from fair-trade organizations, and ensuring their physical waste is disposed of properly and with as small of a carbon footprint as possible.
Environment Impact Assessment Draft 2020
The draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notification, 2020 released by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has seen many objections to its clauses and averments for violating several provisions under the Environment Protection Act (EPA), 1986.
The notification fails to fulfil the precautionary principle, due diligence and norms for fruitful public participation, making it converse to the protection and safeguard of the environment.
Social Audit
A social audit is a formal review of a company's endeavors, procedures, and code of conduct regarding social responsibility and the company's impact on society. A social audit is an assessment of how well the company is achieving its goals or benchmarks for social responsibility.
Ethical Decisions
Ethical decision-making refers to the process of evaluating and choosing among alternatives in a manner consistent with ethical principles. In making ethical decisions, it is necessary to perceive and eliminate unethical options and select the best ethical alternative. An ethical decision is one that engenders trust, and thus indicates responsibility, fairness and caring to an individual. To be ethical, one has to demonstrate respect, and responsibility.
Corporate Governance
Corporate governance is the combination of rules, processes or laws by which businesses are operated, regulated or controlled. The term encompasses the internal and external factors that affect the interests of a company’s stakeholders, including shareholders, customers, suppliers, government regulators and management. The board of directors is responsible for creating the framework for corporate governance that best aligns business conduct with objectives.
Business Ethics
Business ethics refers to implementing appropriate business policies and practices with regard to arguably controversial subjects. Some issues that come up in a discussion of ethics include corporate governance, insider trading, bribery, discrimination, social responsibility, and fiduciary responsibilities.
National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), Government of India, released a set of guidelines and principles called the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC). The NGRBC has been designed to assist businesses to perform the requirements of regulatory compliance.
The Principles of CSR
The uncertainty surrounding the nature of CSR activity it is difficult to define CSR and to be certain about any such activity. It is therefore imperative to be able to identify such activity and we take the view that there are three basic principles which together comprise all CSR activity. These are Sustainability, Accountability & Transparency
Tools in CSR
Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) shares the arena with other concepts, such as technology assessment, risk assessment, technology management and sustainability management. The biggest and possibly most powerful concept though is often overlooked: Corporate (social) Responsibility (CR).
It could be thought that the word ‘corporate’ limits the application of CR principles and tools in RRI, because RRI deals with private and public investments. However, the three main corporate responsibilities -environmental, social and economic- are the same for publicly funded research and innovation (R&I) actors.
