Visited 4 library schools in a month, one calls itself iSchool but does not have any distance courses Meta analysis of research conducted during 10 years, concludes that online education gets better learning results Silicon Valley, a place of innovation and creativiy The merging of the publich library with the university library – King – A good example LIS Students – Largest LiST enrollment, with students from 15 countries Faculty and staff – Transforming the school program into fully online programs is an excellent sign of change

Crucial step, identify what, and how can be done in the short, medium and long term Explore and identify potential markets: Eastern Europe, LAC, China Team building - A vital process to anchor any future development: Several examples in nature, geese, align, support, protect, gain speed, cover more ground Work strategically on the re-accreditation plan, long process and time-consuming Enhance human virtual and face to face interaction, virtual warmth

Evaluate and assess all the academic elements: identify well objectives / learning outcomes, conditions to accomplish them, Search also for quality, follow WISE (Web-based Information Science Education) group Faculty and staff are pillars of any success, need for aligning the reward system, within university principles Identify and operate channels to identify them Invest in technlogy, software and equipment fo support the education platform and learning communication Marketing: determine well the educational product / service that require the student/community, strategy to gain learners and communication with them Identiy the customer, keep the customer and to satisfy the customer Four P´s (Marketing mix) Product, Price, Place and Promotion Marketing is a strategic planning work Advocacy: my experience with BiV and USBI VER Work to overcome bureacracy, legislation

Lead also in quality, and menu of programs Work to overcome the legislative limitation, opportunities and challenges to have a more qualified faculty If distance education is identified as a strategic, to contribute globally with best practices Publish key publications along this subject, can be from outside academics Have a leading participation in association, use their forums for visibility: ALA, SLA, IFLA, my interest in running for IFLA Presidency

Reaching the end of the 4 year journey If the school rolls out the strategic plan, gain a truly international student enrollment Have programs in some major relevant languages Human touch, have a well- established system of communication and service follow up of students Twitter – Mexicana – Metasearcher LANIC, have a strong portal, good content Offer relevant courses, workshops, learning materials – Example Bill and Melinda Gates, MLAS Funding, vital in current economic situation Comes with a good product and good marketing – Fund raising requires planning

Holistic approach Students – Center all actions on them Attend faculty needs Staff – Good, example of Linda Have an open eye for opportunities of funding Research most difficult, takes time, hire external researchers Fluid communication Four P´s – Product, Price, Place and Promotion – Read your accomplishments in the website Attend systematically the re-accreditation process

Mac – Mixed feelings CNN, Starbucks, Microsoft, Car makers, etc. Local touch Price – It is a key factor, currency management If this is the choice: call center, grants for developing countries, Not only translations but adaptation of programs and services Join efforts with local schools, set up join programs

The main market, largest The more sophisticated – Flexible approaches to take courses Polarized needs, both ends: standard LIS education and new information fields Holistic approach with faculty expertise: computing, art, sociology, etc. Offer especific channels of communication to USA students / market

Let the school become a flawless diamond, with no imperfections, so that it becomes a paragon: a perfect dimond Collective approach, group decision-making Communication Constant communication Have a radar approach to spot opportunities Follow and consolidate the school, rely on its current strenghts Become the OCLC in Distance education A journey of four years to consolidate the school into a paragon: Flawless diamond, strong.
