his mother died of tuberculosis abandoning his father to raise him in his siblings alone. At the time
of his mother's death, his father also suffered from mental illness. This affected Munch greatly; his

SCREAM! "The Scream" by Edvard Munch has been a very famous portrait known throughout the
world ever since it was created in 1893. This portrait is of a man who is screaming as he is in a
potentially disastrous situation. Although he faces disaster, beauty can still be found in the life that
he is has lived or is currently living. On the other hand, Alice Walker also shares a story of her
disaster in "Beauty: When the Other Dancer Is the Self." Walker got her eye shout out by a BB gun
and it changed her life forever. Although at first she thought a life of experiencing beauty was
impossible, she realized how beautiful the idea of living truly is and how grateful she is to be alive.
As shown in "The Scream" and in Alice Walker's story, when disaster strikes, there is always hope to
find beauty in the world whether it is in the past, future, or present because of how beautiful life
itself can truly be.
First off, "The Scream" is a portrait of a man who seems to be really scared to the point where he is
screaming. He is placing his hands on the side of his face in a terrified manner. This man has no hair
or even facial features for that matter. It is hard to assume his age because of his lack of facial
features, but it seems that he might be of young age, at twenty years old or so. His face looks like
that of an alien, with nothing but a bald head and plain face, featuring just his eyes, nose and his

The 1893 painting "The Scream", painted by Edvard Munch is very captivating. This painting
makes me feel the true emotion Edvard is feeling. At first, I see the dark dull colours in the gloomy
scenery but then I can look past that and see such a warm fiery red–orange sky. I love the details in
this panting from the people in the background to the organic strokes of the paintbrush exhibiting a
different shade with every stroke. However, I cannot help but wonder why? Why is this human
screaming or are they human? Maybe it is a representation of someone's inner demon or thoughts
just shouting to get out. In spite of that, I think not knowing the true meaning of this painting is the
beauty of it.
There are many elements/principles of art shown in this painting. The painting is filled with many
wavy smooth lines that help signify the movement of the water. The use of complementary colours

Edvard Munch actually created four different versions of this painting using different materials. In
addition, the original copy of the scream has been a target of various high–profile art thefts. Munch
discovered his inspiration for this painting while "walking along the road with two friends...the sky

Looking like a scene out of a horror movie, The Scream is one of the most famous Expressionist
paintings in the world. During the end of the nineteenth century, Expressionism arose as an art
movement, wherein poets and artists began to use their works to express their inner feelings and

For this purpose of this analysis, I chose to do a piece of artwork that I viewed as very different. The
painting is titled Scream. It was created by an artist named Edvard Munch in the year of 1893.
Munch was a Norwegian artist. This painting has a great significance in Munch's life. This painting
was created during the time of Sigmund Freud. I found this very interesting since Munch himself
lived a very tough life himself. Munch began to express his tormented inner world through his

Edvard Grieg is Norway's most beloved composer. His work in the late romantic era helped to create
a national identity for the new country. However, despite the frail persona he has been assigned by
society, his true personality was that of a Bergener, as seen through his letters and essays.
The late Romantic Era (~1790–1910) was a time for experimentation. The individual composers,
starting with Beethoven, moved away from the technical form of the baroque and classical periods.
Instead this movement focused on emotions and national pride. Often, the Romantic era is placed
next to the Classical era as an opposite. (Einstein 1980) History often treats Romanticism as a
rebellious response to the technical Classical era that came beforehand. However, there are many
overlaps between the two movements. Many romantic pieces followed the general structures and
rules that were created in the Classical era, though many delved into chromatic progression.

artists that have used their art to work through pain and mental illness. Edvard Munch is best known
for 'The Scream', many of his other works also explore intense psychological themes. He suffered

the surface, Munch describes a normal evening in Norway, taking a walk at sunset with some friends
beside a "fjord." While an evening out walking by the water might sound relaxing and enjoyable at

mother taught him how to play the piano. He studied at many different schools including Tanks
school and Norwegian private school when he got older. While he was at Norwegian private school
he met a violinist, who said that with his amazing talents, he should go to Leipzig Conservatory
which is a piano school. He decided that it wasn't for him. In 1860 Edvard survived a lung disease
