2. About the Artist: Edvard Munch
• Edvard Munch was an exceptional painter in
Norway.
• Born in 1863 and died in 1944.
• Related to famous artists Jacob Munch (painter) and
Peter Munch (historian).
• His main focuses on his artwork were nature and
portraying his own emotions.
• Some of his most famous pieces of art are: The
Scream, Anxiety, and The Dance of Life.
3. Quote by Edvard Munch
“Nature is not only all that is visible to
the eye… it also includes the inner
pictures of the soul.”
4. The Munch Museum
• Located in Oslo, Norway.
• Opened in 1963 with a collection of 1,100 paintings, 4,500 drawings, and 18,000 prints.
• The world’s largest collection of Edvard Munch paintings.
• Dedicates the other paintings, drawings, and prints to artists of expressionism.
5. The Frieze of Life: A Series of Paintings
• The Frieze of Life was a series of paintings in the 1890’s.
• Munch began the most productive part of his life when his father passed away. He named each
painting with the emotions he wanted to portray in his artwork. Names like: Melancholy, Despair,
Jealousy, Anxiety, Death in the Sickroom, and The Scream.
Melancholy. 1896.
Despair. 1892.
Jealousy. 1895.
Anxiety. 1894.
Death in a Sickroom. 1893.
6. The Scream
• Painted by Munch in 1910.
• Painted with pastel on unprimed cardboard.
• The painting has a variety of colors, majority of it has
warms colors with some cool colors.
• Munch says “I was walking with 2 friends with the sun
setting. Suddenly the sky turned blood red. I paused,
feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence- there was
blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord
and the city- my friends walked on, and I stood
trembling with angst.”
7. The Frieze of Life cont…
• Munch was a very lonely man. He was never married and lived alone his whole life
besides when he was a child. A lot of these paintings depict his loneliness and
depression.
• He watched his mother die of tuberculosis when he was 5 and his sister died of the same
disease when Munch was 14.
• He portrays these emotions exceptionally by curvy, contrasting lines, dark colors, and the
facial expressions on the figures he painted. These techniques is what made him one of
the most influential artists.
8. Judgement
• I believe this exhibition was very unique. It showed key artworks that told a story about Munch’s life
through his artwork. Every piece of artwork has a different story behind it but had many similarities
when looking directly at them.
• Personally, I believe art is one of the coolest things we have in this world because of how much there is
to see and different stories to hear.
• Munch had an interesting characteristic about him and it was that he painted stories to show how the
world around people affects them. Art is about expressing yourself which is exactly what he did and that
is why I believe this is an extraordinary art exhibit.
