Education in Lithuania is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 to 16. The school year typically runs from September to June, with classes meeting 5 days a week in 45 minute periods covering subjects like Lithuanian, mathematics, history, science, and foreign languages. Grades are given from 1 to 10, with progress of younger students described rather than graded. After lower secondary school at age 16, students can choose to attend vocational school, secondary school, or gymnasium in preparation for university or college.
