5. The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday
launched the adjusted K to 10 school curriculum dubbed
the “Matatag Curriculum” after two years of thorough
review.

Sara Z. Duterte cited revisions in the new basic
education curriculum, which include the reduction in the
number of competencies, and more focus on the
development of foundational skills such as literacy,
numeracy, and socio-emotional skills to kindergarten to
Grade 3 learners.

6. With the new curriculum that will be taught to students
from kinder to Grade 10, the DepEd seeks to address
issues in the previous system.
DepEd Director IV Jocelyn Andaya of the Bureau of
Curriculum Development said that 70 percent of the
learning competencies of the current K to 10 curriculum
have been taken out.
Under the adjusted K to 10 curriculum, learning areas
are reduced by two to five: 1) Language 2) Reading and
Literacy 3) Mathematics 4) Makabansa (Nationalism)
and 5) GMRC (Good Manners and Right Conduct).

7. “There are competencies that repeat. There are
competencies that are nice to know but not a ‘must to
know’ that is why we aimed for essential learning
competencies,” Andaya explained in a press conference.
The MATATAG Curriculum will be implemented in
School Year 2024-2025 for Kindergarten, Grades 1, 4,
and 7.
In SY 2025-2026, Grades 2, 5, and 8 will be under the
new curriculum with Grades 3, 6, and 9 in SY 2026-
2027. Grade 10 learners will join them in SY 2027-2028,
the department added.

8. Andaya also said kindergarten learning will use “play-
based approach” and formal subjects will only begin at
grade 1.
Here are the subjects for each grade level: Grade 1:
Language, Reading and Literacy, Mathematics,

Mathematics, Makabansa, GMRC Grade 3: Filipino,

9. In her speech at the launching event at the Sofitel Hotel
in Pasay City, Duterte-Carpio also cited the intensified
formation of learners’ values and character development
in adherence to the Good Manners and Right Conduct
(GMRC) and Values Education Act as well as the
articulation to 21st Century Skills.
She said among the features of the MATATAG
Curriculum are the peace competencies highlighting the
promotion of non-violent actions, and development of
conflict resolution skills.

11. DepEd’s track remains to be fundamentally illuminated by the
wisdom of our slogan ‘MATATAG: Bansang makabata, batang
makabansa’, meaning DepEd’s programs and reforms are
intentionally tailored to produce competent, job-ready, active,
responsible, and patriotic citizens,” Duterte-Carpio said.
“MATATAG” stands for “MAke the curriculum relevant to produce
job-ready, active, and responsible citizens; TAke steps to
accelerate the delivery of basic education services and provision
facilities; TAke good care of learners by promoting learner well-
being, inclusiveness learning, and positive learning environment;
and Give support for teachers to teach better.”

13. Decongested curriculum: According to DepEd curriculum
director Jocelyn Andaya, the current curriculum has
been decongested by 70%.
Duterte said that reducing the number of subjects and
narrowing the focus of both teachers and students would
help improve student learning outcomes.

starting in the 2024-2025 school year.
Senior high curriculum: During the launch of the revised
K-10 curriculum, Duterte said that the curriculum for the
senior high program (Grades 11 and 12) is currently
being reviewed. It will be unveiled sometime in 2024.
The Matatag curriculum aims to create students who are
employable and globally competitive by the time they
graduate from the 12th grade.
