* The act of designing a
  learning experience to
  fit the full spectrum of
  students
* The purpose of UDL is
  to make sure that
  everyone is a
  successful learner and
  reaches their full
  potential of being an
  expert learner
* It is also about
  designing learning
  experiences which
  allows the teachers to
  be flexible and have
  choices
*
* Right now, the way classrooms are being taught is focused
  on the average student
* Cognitive neurosciences have shown that there really is no
  “average student” anywhere
* Students who do not fit in the “average student” criteria
  are being labeled as disabled, so, UDL is trying to get rid
  of that label
* Teachers have students whose
  first language is not English and
  students with disabilities that
  fall behind, but teachers also
  have gifted/talented students
  who are not being challenged
  enough by the curriculum
*
*1. Provide Multiple Means of Representation
  * This means that teachers should use different ways to
    present information to their students
  * For example, when teaching basic math, the teacher can
    give their students a worksheet with addition and/or
    subtraction problems and then use objects (i.e. blocks)
    for the students to physically take away and add to give
    them a different perspective
*
*2. Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression
  * Students can express what they know if different ways, for
   example, in writings/language and drawings
*
*3. Provide Multiple Means of Engagement
  * This is the most important of the three because without
    engagement, the other two principles are not important
    because involvement is criteria
  * Engagement is key because if teachers do not involve or
    engage students in activities, they will not be able to
    measure their success and keep them motivated
*

    * 1. Find out the goals
    * 2. Find what materials will be
     most useful in the classroom
    * 3. Figure out which methods are
     most useful for the teacher to use
     (i.e. lectures, collaborative
     groups, experiments, etc.)
    * 4. Make sure the students are
     learning by using different ways of
     assessment
*

  • 2. * * The act of designing a learning experience to fit the full spectrum of students * The purpose of UDL is to make sure that everyone is a successful learner and reaches their full potential of being an expert learner * It is also about designing learning experiences which allows the teachers to be flexible and have choices
  • 3. * * Right now, the way classrooms are being taught is focused on the average student * Cognitive neurosciences have shown that there really is no “average student” anywhere * Students who do not fit in the “average student” criteria are being labeled as disabled, so, UDL is trying to get rid of that label * Teachers have students whose first language is not English and students with disabilities that fall behind, but teachers also have gifted/talented students who are not being challenged enough by the curriculum
  • 4. * *1. Provide Multiple Means of Representation * This means that teachers should use different ways to present information to their students * For example, when teaching basic math, the teacher can give their students a worksheet with addition and/or subtraction problems and then use objects (i.e. blocks) for the students to physically take away and add to give them a different perspective
  • 5. * *2. Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression * Students can express what they know if different ways, for example, in writings/language and drawings
  • 6. * *3. Provide Multiple Means of Engagement * This is the most important of the three because without engagement, the other two principles are not important because involvement is criteria * Engagement is key because if teachers do not involve or engage students in activities, they will not be able to measure their success and keep them motivated
  • 7. * * 1. Find out the goals * 2. Find what materials will be most useful in the classroom * 3. Figure out which methods are most useful for the teacher to use (i.e. lectures, collaborative groups, experiments, etc.) * 4. Make sure the students are learning by using different ways of assessment
