EDITING TECHNIQUES

• Here you can see the editing technique know as a cutaway being used to increase
the focus behind the character jack wilders magic trick. Adding intensity to the
moment. This helps towards the narrative of the film as it is centred around magic
tricks and the use of the cutaway to put more focus on the scene gives the audience
a nice taster of what to expect from the rest of the film.
• In this scene you hear/see the use of a j-cut. As you can hear jack announcing his
magic trick as he opens the door and then proceeds to then walk up the stairs to his
act. This helps to move the opening scene alone as you have him start announcing
what is going to happen in the next scene as he is walking up so you don't have to
have one scene with a longer explanation.
• Here you can see a intercut from when jack walks of to when the man notices his
wallet is missing. This adds a sense of surprise to the scene as it cuts to another
location with the man on the top level and jack on the bottom level which then gets
the audience thinking about what happened to the mans wallet and instantly tying
the cause to Jack.
• Here you can see/hear a L-cut as Jack announces his act and it cuts with the audio
going to the audience who turn round. This helps to show that Jack has got the
attention of the audience he is performing to indicating to the audience that he is
good at grabbing attention.
• I think that the theory being use in this scene is the enigma code as there is no
sense of good and bad and although things seem to be good the scene has a sense
of mystery as you do not know much about the character Jack also has the mystery
of how Jack managed to steal the mans wallet. Therefore I think it is enigma code
due to its use of mystery.
