Loop is a short mystery film that tells the story of a man who wakes up on his floor surrounded by chalk, only to die from slipping on spilled coffee when answering the phone, waking up again in the same position to repeat the loop. The film uses a variety of shots including close-ups and tracking shots to emphasize the man's confusion and draw attention to important props like the phone and broken coffee mug that seem to be part of the mystery. It also features a police officer outside who is unaware of the man's repeating fate, suggesting the loop has happened before.

2. Plot
• Loop is a short film, directed by Artiz Moerno
that falls into the comedy / mystery drama
genre. It tells the story of a man who wakes up
on his floor, discovering chalk drawn around
him, soon after the phone begins to ring, on
his way to get the phone he slips, bangs his
head and dies in the position he started only
to do his again when he wakes, this is why its
called the loop.

3. Cinematography
• The scene opens with a close up of what appears
to be blood running across the floor slowly. The
colour of the blood contrasts against the grey
almost metallic floor, the use of dull grey colours
give the audience connotations that something
bad has happened.
• The scene that follows is a close up of the victims
face, this allows the audience to view his facial
expression, vacant suggesting he is unconscious
or dead.

4. Cinematography
• The next scene is a wide shot in order to establish
location to the audience and to show the protagonists
full body language as he is waking. This shows the
audience the confusion expressed by the male.
• There is a wide range of shot use: close-ups, tracking,
zooming, etcetera. All in order to focus in on the
importance of the prop use: telephones, coffee
spillage, the broken mug, etcetera, this is also to
emphasise the confusion felt by the protagonist while
highlighting the significance of the items which latter
fall back into place.

5. Cinematography
• The use of a tracking shot allows emphasis to fall
onto the broken mug and spilled coffee, allowing
both the man and the audiences confusion to
grow.
• This is supported with the use of a low angle
shot, which again allows the confusion to grow as
he notices coffee soaked tissue and a broken
mug, like what is in his hands.
• However with a point-of-view shot, we see the
man choose to ignore this and continue with his
plans.

6. Cinematography
• The following series of shots up until the end are
all eye line match shots, this is used in order to
show the facial expressions of the male as he
notices the chalk outline of where his body lay.
• This shows the audience that the beginning scene
was in fact a crime scene.
• The final shot is a birds-eye-view shot to show
the protagonist falling perfectly back into place,
in the chalk outline where he started.

7. Characters
• There are only two characters in the whole of the short
film, the male protagonist who appears to be in his
thirties, his large house gives connotations of being
rich and throughout is represented as confused
through the use of close up shots.
• The only other character is the police officer, stood
outside the house, he is only briefly shown through the
use of a mid shot showing his back when the
protagonist falls and makes a loud noise, this suggests
he has heard the noise before as he does not go to
investigate, suggesting the loop has been happening
for some time.

8. Edit / Sound
• The editing during the beginning of the film is slow in order to
create a sense of suspense and tension, as they mystery of the film
begins to unravel the pace of the film begins to quicken, along with
the quickening of the sound.
• There are no transitions accept for a slow motion effect when the
man drops his coffee, this gives connotations to the audience that
this has some significant meaning, the reason for his falling.
• Throughout the film the editing is standard in the way is it cut and
pieced together, that is until the man slips on the coffee, the
director changes to emphasise the fast pace and the action of the
scene.
• There is no non-diegetic sound throughout the film, this could be
done to emphasis the situation and the mystery of the scene, as not
to distract the audience from the peaceful environment he lives in,
raising the question to what could have happened.

9. Mise-en-scene
• There are several important props in the film, one of
the main would be the telephone, it is the cause of
death to the man, raising the enigma what would
happen if it didn’t ring or he didn’t answer it, would
the loop be broken. We can see it is of importance as it
is shown through POV shots and close ups to draw
attention to it.
• Secondly, the coffee cup which he drops, smashes and
slips on leading him to hit his head when he answers
the phone. The fact that we see the same sort of
broken mug already in the bin creates a larger sense of
mystery to the audience. Therefore reinforcing
disequilibrium.
