INTRODUCTION:
KIDS CLUB GROUPS ECO SESSION 2 must be made an
interactive session for kids which can provoke kids to
think on various environmental issues facing today.
Awareness can bring action helping them to live a
more eco-friendly life.
HOW TO USE THIS PPT?
The pictorial slides in this PPT with questions
provoke thinking amongst kids. First, you may
ask them to answer these questions in their
own simple way. Animator in-charge will later
give his/her explanations. Feel free to adapt
and improve. We will begin the first slide…
What do you see in this picture? Do you think
these birds are happy? Will they live for long?
Yes no. why
What are the reasons these birds have died? Do
you feel happy or sad about it?
What do you see in this picture? Why do you think
the fishes have died?
What insects are these? What could be the reason
they are dead?
Do you see the death of a tiger? Has the
villagers done a good job of killing the tiger?
What they could have done?
What this picture indicates? Can you read the
name of some of the extinct birds/animals?
Are you happy to see this picture? How do you
feel when you see this kind of picture? Happy,
unhappy. Why give reasons
Do you see in this picture, a big nice
bungalow? Will you be happy to live in this big
nice house. Yes, no, why. Give reasons.
In the earlier slides we all saw destruction of environment,
cutting trees, animals dying, bird and fish dying, bees dying
and so on. We will all agree this is not good for our existence.
Then what kind of earth do we want and why? See the next
slides.
What do you see in this picture? Do you think the
fish here are healthy and happy? Why. Give
reasons? Is it good for human beings? Why.
If we want to see or use this kind of fish what
should we do?
Fish is important for biodiversity because:
•Millions of fisher folk depends on fishing for
their livelihood.
•Fish are healthy source of protein for human
beings
•Certain kind of fish cleanse the water bodies
like oceans, lakes etc by eating dead animals or
other waste
•Fish is also used for aquariums for commercial
use or ornamental purposes
Can imagine a world without fish?
How do you like these birds? Do you see these kind
of birds nowadays. If yes, where? If no why?
BIRDS AND ECOSYSTEM
Many people derive great pleasure, fulfillment
and inspiration from watching birds and listening
to them. But birds are also an intricate
component of ecosystems, which we need for
our own survival. Ecosystems such as forests and
the marine environment provide us with food,
medicines and important raw materials. They
keep the climate stable, oxygenate air and
transform pollutants into nutrients. Birds play an
important role in the effective functioning of
these systems.
Which is this animal? Are you afraid of
it? Why?
The tiger is a unique animal which
plays a pivotal role in the health and
diversity of an ecosystem. It is a top
predator which is at the apex of the
food chain and keeps the population
of wild ungulates in check, thereby
maintaining the balance between
prey herbivores and the vegetation
upon which they feed.
Can you see two kinds of creatures in this
pictures? Do you like to see them live? Why?
ROLE OF BEES, INSECTS, BUTTERFLIES ETC IN THE
ECOSYSTEM
Along with birdsong and the hum of a distant
lawnmower, the gentle buzz of a bee brings to
mind long, lazy summer days. These insects,
drifting from flower to flower, pollinating* as they
go, are nature’s invaluable little helpers. They play
a vital role in the production of crops for human
and animal consumption.
(*Pollination is the process by which pollen is
transferred to the female reproductive organs of a
plant, thereby enabling fertilization to take place.)
What are the following creatures? Do you
think that they are good or bad for
environment? Give reasons
Earthworms may lack the charm or excitement of
more familiar animals, but their contribution to our
world is significant. These ‘lowly creatures’ play a vital
part within the natural soil ecosystem. They are also
valued for their contribution to ecosystem services –
ecosystem functions that are of direct benefit to
humans through their action on soil processes.
Earthworms are sometimes known as ‘ecosystem
engineers’ because they significantly modify the
physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil
profile. These modifications can influence
the habitat and activities of other organisms within
the soil ecosystem. Earthworms influence (and
benefit) the soil ecosystem in a number of ways.
ALL THAT WE LEARNT TODAY SHOWS US THAT
HUMAN BEINGS CANNOT SURIVE WITHOUT
BIODIVERSITY, THAT IS,
We need trees and greenery to produce oxygen
we breath.
We need fish as food.
We need birds to enjoy
Beauty.
We need insects to pollinate.
We need tigers for health -
and diversity of ecosystem.
We need insects to produce -
crops.
We need earthworms to make the soil fertile
